Yes, It's short for Yesterday and Today... but that's not so great, either. The abbreviated moniker is just an awful band name. When the band finally signed to a major American label (A&M), the "suits" should've demanded a new band name as a requirement in the contract.

    The The
-"Here's the world's biggest band, The The!" Never gonna happen... More like, "Who are these friggin' smart-asses?"
    Toad the Wet Sprocket
    - I can't ever even remember whether it's 'wet' or 'west'...speaking of that..
    Wet Wet Wet
    - Well, they had some hits. Thanks to e.g. The Troggs (there's another one)
Even knowing the Leonard Skinner story, I've always considered Lynyrd Skynyrd a stupid name. And they even had to address that in the name of their first album! Didn't seem to hold them back much, though.
ABBA's Björn Ulvaeus' and Benny Andersson's '60s bands had pretty silly names; Björn had Hootenanny Singers and Benny had Hep Stars. Not sure about ABBA either, but one has gotten used to it. And it's better than BAAB or BABA, I guess.

The Fanny name is very unfortunate. My wife, who is French, is called Fanny which is a pretty common name here. It's pronounced with the accent on the y. When we lived in Scotland, it reached a point where it was hard for her to meet new people because they would appear to be too awkward in her presence as they didn't know how to address her. It used to be a proper name in the UK before it came to refer to women's genitalia.

I'm a fan of the Butthole Surfers. I think their name is fine for their genre. All those bands had controversial sounding names to make them edgy. Just look at the early album titles: Rembrandt Pussy Horse, Locust Abortion Technician, etc. By the time they got to Electriclarryland they sounded much different.
I remember seeing a record back in the day I always wanted to buy, but I knew my parents would freak out. It was an all-female metal/punk trio. They album cover pictured them on the beach in S&M gear. The name of the band was "Oral". The name of the album was "Sex" and the name of the band and album title ran down the side repetitively:
    ORAL
    ORAL
    SEX

Nobody knows how they ended up with that name; even Paul McCartney doesn't remember (he talked about this in a recent podcast).
There are several urban legends people parrot about how they got the name including that it was a nod to Buddy Holly's band The Crickets.

I'd say that TOE FAT is a pretty bad name.
What, are you gonna open up for The Hairy Nostrils?
And the name makes no sense either. Who has fat toes? Well, I guess fat people do. Still, its a stupid name.
For the record, I have a TOE FAT 2CD set on BGO (first two LPs) which has a horrifying cover!...and also a CD from Hairy Chapter as well.
    I seldom listen to either.
