I noted in the comments of the 2nd episode of 'Reliving Old Reviews...' that the RS record guide had given 'A Farewell to Kings' a "■" rating. One step below a one star review and "worthless". This review by MO is more like it. It was rare in the day for any critic to give Rush a fair shake. You did mention the British press thought more highly of them. Glad to have heard this review. Bruce Thomas-Elvis Costello and the Attractions (an extremely versatile and inventive player. The way he and Pete Thomas play off one another on tracks like Lipstick Vogue is fantastic.) Graham Maby- Joe Jackson Band (“On Your Radio” is a powerhouse of a baseline. It is such an interesting arrangement to play and functions as its own organ as well. His bass lines are such an integral part of the unique sound of those first two albums.) Nick Beggs-Kajagoogoo (yes, listen to the albums Islands and White Feathers in their entirety.) Marcus Grosskopf-Helloween Jack Anderson-No Trend

Tales of Brave Ulysses is a spooky and heavy song and Cream were sounding much heavier live.

To me , its definitely sabbath. Cream was a heavy blues band . not metal, in my opinion

The only Clapton I like. Never really liked him that much, but Cream had some songs. Clapton's solo stuff stinks to me. Cocaine is awful.

Good series. I've always thought that if heavy metal is a tree, the roots are Cream, Hendrix, Blue Cheer, and Mountain (and others in the 60d). The trunk of the tree would be Zep, Sabbath, Purple, Budgie, and a big influencer would be Wishbone Ash (and other bands in the 70s). Then all the branches of the tree are what we have today.

So let me try to understand...... if a band isn't as heavy as Popoff would like, then they are pointless and shouldn't even be making music? Seems like kind of a moronic, shallow point of view.

I respect Martin Popoff and his knowledge but I notice he is so disconnected with most people musically.

I would give it to Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Judas Priest really invented the classic or traditional heavy metal sound that the NWOBHM wave then took on.

I am really enjoying this "Who invented Metal"series.

I think Cream on their live albums sound heavier than the studio albums…and I think in general the recordings from the late 60s and early 70s don’t always sound as heavy as they would if recorded later or with different production. Blue Oyster Cults debut comes to mind. The songs are written pretty heavy but not recorded that heavy…..guitars are kind of clean,keyboards up in the mix,not a lot of low end etc…but just picture Transmaniacon MC(or Tales of Brave Ulysses for that matter to go back to Cream)keeping everything the same but swap out the guitar sound with Tony Iommis Master Reality sound and you get a couple pretty heavy metal songs!

This is probably my favourite Gillan album. But for some reason I see it often officially given 2 stars or other crap ratings. Not sure why.

Deep Purple Come Taste The Band album 💜 I loved it in 75 and still love it in 2025. Glenn Hughes was in rehabilitation and Jon Lord did say he was close to getting sacked from the band. Tommy Bolin played bass and backing vocals on Comin Home. A lot of guitar players have a collection of riffs to use at some point. Tommy Bolin is no different. David Coverdale wrote most of the lyrics. Glenn Hughes performed well in The Butterfly Ball which saw him rejoin the band for the rest of the recording. This was were Deep Purple were at the time and what I liked they were themselves. After recording this album they went to Hawii and played a concert. Jon Lord described Tommy Bolin as a guitar god. This line up unravelled due to an appalling experience in Indonesia were a member of the crew was killed. The tour of the Far East was unfortunate in my opinion. Deep Purple management didn't help telling Bolin to play the old stuff note for note. They should have left the band alone. I give this album a 10 and like every song but Drifter is my favourite. Nirvana wasn't responsible for the death of all the bands you loved. The band's you loved were responsible for their own death. The public wanted change, and what came before became bloated, irreverent, and dated. Just as grunge did a few years later. 80s rock fans are still so bloody butt hurt over the alternative rock takeover. Their brains can't cope, so they attribute blame in the wrong place.
