My purchase of the 'Stormwatch' vinyl record by Jethro Tull, from a second hand record store back around 1986, lead to me purchasing a flute and learning how to get a sound out of it and eventually playing tunes on it. That was my gateway to my love for all things flute.
@@magnuswettermark8293 Yes, so underrated... and the opening track (to be more specific) was probably the defining moment in getting me hooked onto the flute. That intro flute riff was so heavy, the first time I heard it.
lol When I saw the title, I immediately saw me and friend back in high school self discovering and chasing the past of the brand new band Asia as well. So, I clicked and wondered how long it would be before they were mentioned and I honestly had a tear of joy when the album was lifted.
My gateway bands to prog were Kansas and Supertramp, having bought Kansas' Song For America and Supertramp's Crime Of The Century albums for the album covers...the music on these albums changed my taste from basic rock/hard rock/top 40 to prog first and foremost
"That girl in that band", I had a similar experience. I heard a song in the 80s and figured out it was Vangelis "with a woman singing". My initial research led me to Vangelis & Irene Papas. That wasn't it. Until I worked out it was Vangelis & Jon. 😅
The Wetton version of ASIA did not deserve the crap it got.... those are fantastic albums. They got crapped on for not being very prog.... they never intended it to be prog, and never told anyone is was prog..... but of course because of who they are, it had prog elements to it.

Stormwatch is a killer album. One of Tull's best.

It’s probably most people’s into rock/hard rock KISS Alive!
Gotta agree, Asia - "Astra" is great. Mandy Meyer pulls off some amazing solos on that album.
Grant's very obvious pain enduring Asia talk is greatness!!! 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽🤣🤣🤣
Agree wouldn’t think Asia was a gateway band. Rush and Yes were for prog imo. Sabbath, Zep, KISS for hard rock. Priest for metal.

Asia was a gateway band to prog for many people? Well, I knew there was one positive thing to be said about them (hi hi).
I like the first few Asia releases but in general I don't like prog.
