Also a couple things I glazed over that I may go deeper into in the future:
-Launchkey has a FIXED CHORD mode, allowing for 1 finger playing of full chords
-MPK Mini's Pitch Bend/Mod may perform better depending on what Program you have selected.
Let me know if you have more questions following this video :)

Not saying you're doing this, but I've noticed that many reviewers seem somewhat bias against the Akai. It makes me wonder if the popularity of the Akai factors into that. I get it, it's always doper to have the less known item, especially if it is comparable or superior to the popular one. But, I don't want the cooler product, I want the better product. I would liken this situation to Bose. Audiophiles loathe Bose, they laugh at their product line and they make fun of their users. They claim the sound is boring, that it lacks personality. I was once told that Bose is too consistent. Ummm, what? But, in reality, they only dislike it because it's well-known. So, they will opt for more obscure options. I've played music my whole life, been around a lot of gear and other shit. Bose is a phenomenal brand. It is consistent, but I think it is robust. I get great bass from my Bose products. The highs are above average, the mids are perfect. The best feature?? DURABILITY. Anyway, do you think maybe you or others approach the Akai in the same way that audiophiles approach Bose Speakers?
I love your vids, I'm a sub. Thank you.

I think the sensitivity in the drum pads will depend on your style of music as well. Electronic music uses very loud and consistent beats, but if you play cinematic or orchestral percussion, every level of sensitivity counts because you want to have more control over the intensity (specially for risers and build ups).

Went from using the Akai mini to the Launchkey after I dropped my device on the floor. Couldn’t be happier with the change. The modulator is so much more practical on the Launchkey compared to the joystick of the Akai.

hey taetro.. just wanted to make a request not related to this. so i bought the launch key mini. So a mini controller is obviously different from a full sized one with smaller keys and just 25 keys. So playing it the traditional way is a bit hard. can you make a video on how to properly play mini controllers. eg finger positioning, building layers and all. its just a genuine thing cause if i try playing this the traditional way. my hands pain like anything.
ps loving what you do btw!

I think you're supposed to use the small keyboard just to test sounds and set up settings in programs. I have a full size keyboard (launchkey 61) but now I want a small keyboard to have on my desk next to me as I test out sounds and using different programs. With the small keyboard you have to use the octave button to make it go up the keyboard or down so it's like a full size keyboard but you just have to use the octave buttons.

@Taetro thank you for this comparison/review. I feel a lil bit of buyers remorse after purchasing the MPK Mini MK3... My #1 issue is the need to use the mpk midi editor software for the unit to sync BPM with your DAW etc.. Its painful having to set it up every time before starting your session. I am not an Abelton user so I didn't go with the Launchkey Mini BUT the fact that it has 16 pads and transport controls on such a small unit along with introductory Abelton software may get me to at least try it out. I currently am using the Akai Fire controller alongside the mpk mk3 to have transport and pads and keys... ugh

Your video of going to the cabin and showing what was in your bag and pulling out the Launchkey MINI along with this showing it has ARP, sold me. I use Garageband along with the iPad for mobile and needed a portable keyboard player. I'm considering using to MacBook Air and maybe down the road, Ableton might pop off. But for now being an amateur, GB works for me. Really appreciate a theme in your videos. What works for you. Launchkey Mini will be the one for me. Also, not having the risk of the joystick breaking in the bag was a factor. Keep up the great work and be safe!

I have the Launchkey Mini. I like the functions but the pads are way too sensitive. Keys are also not customizable. The MPK actually has customizable keys and pads sensitivity. This is crucial imo to tailor the device for your own way of playing rhythmically. You can’t really ‘bang’ out on the pads or keys of the launchkey. Too flimsy and too sensitive.

Can’t believe Akai have left out some of the features you mentioned in the video on what is now version 3 of this midi controller.
For me the idea of having a mini controller is for portability / using, playing out live & the features like No transport controls, the bummed out point where the joystick controller can leave you & no midi out are just too bad to even consider purchasing a newer version of this keyboard as they are of no benefit to me whatsoever.
So disappointed after hearing this model was now available as I have the previous version & was looking forward to the issues of this one being ironed out.
Sort it out Akai cos apart from some sort of oversight I can’t understand why these features havnt been sorted in this model.
Wish Novation had included endless encoders for the nobs on the Launchkey mini as I would definitely purchase it.
Blend the 2 of these controllers & you would have 1 cool little machine.

I love the proper MPC style pads on the MPK MINI and the endless encoders, plus the joystick is perfect for my playing skill.
I like to be able to adjust both at the same time, I got used to this with Roland keyboards... So I would simply add a LAUNCHPAD MINI MK3 to it and have all worlds.
I'll then have MPC style pads for natural drumming and the LAUNCHPAD pads for triggering clips and recording, muting, soloing, etc, and then to play the more solid drum that doesn't require natural velocity.
I then also get the transport buttons, but also endless encoders.
This opinion is based on my liking for the MPC pads, and by the looks of it, I should be able to get CORX upgrades on the pads from MPCSTUFF to make then ultra-responsive and get those perfectly off-beat beats without them becoming offbeat offbeat beats lol... then meaning you have to do a 50% quantize to get it back close to the way you actually play it.
Which is only import for boom-bap or lofi... but is necessary for odd percussion that can be used in any genre.
    Thanks for the vid!!!!
If you use Ableton and only have enough for one thing, then the LAUNCHKEY MINI is the obvious choice.
The thing I would miss about the pitch and mod wheel on LUANCHKEY mini is the fact you can put your finger directly at the value you want... you don't have to pull a wheel down... this can make it great for some precise automation creativity.
If these companies could just include everything, that would be great

Say for instance I have a Project with 8 midi tracks each with their macro knobs. Is it possible with the MPK+ Launchpad to press a couple of buttons on the launchpad and have full access to one of the midi tracks on the MPK?

I just received my Launchkey Mini MK3 and it's awesome BUT the pad LEDs are unbearably bright blue. Like, blindingly bright in low ligthing. Is there any way to dim the brightness? Otherwise, should I just go with the Arturia minilab mk2 or Akai MpkMini MK3 if I need pads that won't burn my retinas? :( thanks!!

I actually just purchased this same launchkey a couple days ago to try out a new midi prior to me even looking at any videos. Part of me making that purchase was because I experienced issues with the Akai Mini Mpk2 in the past as well as I was familiar with an older model launchkey that I used in school that I thoroughly enjoyed and got accustomed to using with both Logic and Ableton. Although I am not an Ableton user (only worked with it in school), seeing this video after my purchase gives me a lot on confidence in my choice of the Launchkey. Preciate it Taetro! Thank you for thoroughly comparing the two. 🙏🏾🫡

If I don't have a preference for a DAW because I'm a beginner and I don't know which one I wanna use, how do I know which midi keyboard should I pick between the two of them? I want something beginner friendly (maybe they both are, IDK).

i feel like back when I bought my first MIDI controller keys (2006) that aftertouch was a big selling point and I checked to be certain that mine had it. TodayI don't see aftertouch on any of the portable controllers that I like. I just purchased the Akai mk3 and I think it should really have aftertouch. It's an important feature to me and probably to a lot of other creators.

@@rokogizdic3527 As far as I can tell all of the Launchkey models have it except for the mini mk3. The AKAI definitely doesn't have it. the budget class of controllers don't have it probably bc the keys are cheaply manufactured for the most part

as someone who tries to compose music or learn play keys, choice is irrelevant. anything would do I went for novation despite reviews vs previous akai mini 2 despite I prefer akai design and big pads that look better than novation. also, implementation of novation to logic is limited and their software map for it is outdated after not even a year and now it doesnt correspond, and I can't remove it because when I connect it to logic, the pads are not lit. I wish I never installed it into logic tbh....and novation never really updated it

I acquired a MKP Mini, what a mess about it was downloading the Akai software onto a MacBook, too much info needed, username, password, licence and ilocks to download the Velvet and G piano etc. I found the console is just too complicated to understand, it's horrible.
I am just pleased it wasn't expensive and I was able to delete everything off the laptop. Thankfully GarageBand works, it's much simpler but sadly you loose the functionality of the knobs, pads and arpeggiator. I do wonder if a PC would be friendlier or more versatile. I cannot recommend the unfriendly software.

For my the choice depends on this:
If you love ableton or need midi out to control any device -> Launchkey
If you dont use ableton or don't need midi out -> MK3
Maybe if you are trying to get the best for finger druming or you are looking for something from Arturia, it would make the decition harder.

    • @6oseph

personally i use logic pro, but im interested in ableton for in the future possibly. overall im getting the launchkey mainly because the drumpads are a lot more efficient, slightly more simple for workflow purposes and is a lot more portable.

hi Taetro. I am still torn between these 2. I was going to purchase Akai after you suggested in another video "if you are not decided on DAW, just get Akai MPK". But now after doing more research I am leaning towards LAUNCHKEY MINI, as I dont mind learning Ableton. One question. does Launchkey have the function of how u make drum pads have the same bass level no matter how hard you press it? You mentioned Akai has this in this video, but didnt say nothing about Launchkey. Thanks!

  • @jragadio

Maybe add a launchpad mini to the Akai MPK mini to get you all the ableton controls that the Akai doesn’t provide.

I think Launchkey is better for a newbie in terms of quality, workflow, midi out and ableton integration. If you are barely familiar with any daw, then either of this software would work for you (because you'll have to learn how to use them eventually). Although Akai provides a starter pack with 1500+ sounds, you can get free sound packs/plugins from novation too if you purchase their device (look at their sound collection). Although the current mk3 has better quality, their previous model are known to break easily after use.
