I ordered a Minilab Mk3 a couple days ago. My main motivation was not mentioned in your video - the control of Arturia software. I have a Komplete Kontrol S88 for my studio, which does a great job with Native Instruments, but I want to be able to load an Arturia software synth and tweak the sound parameters without a lot of MIDI mapping. Thanks for your review!
I can't believe the timing on this, I was looking for the first midi keyboard to get like two days ago, and I have done quite a bit of research. And my first pick was the AKAI MPK Mini mk3 and my second was the Arturia Minilab 2. I LOVE how it looks overall and every review said the keys felt nice. I was literally looking up a more detailed review on the Arturia minilab 2 since I didn't like how every review had quite a bit negative to say about the Akai, and I came across this. I FELL IN LOVE FIRST SITE. this keyboard is just, amazing, I'm definitely going to get one of these. Also, your videos are very detailed and helpful, keep up the good work! And let me know if its the right choice to get this as a starting midi keyboard, since I'm quite new to this and I wouldn't want to make the wrong choice since that would be a WHOLE deal. Thank you!
@@dimpy3442 You do have to hit the drum pads with quite a bit of force for the max volume but it is predictable enough to use with efficiency. I don't have an akai but I have seen one in person and I will say I much prefer the minilab 3 as I have one myself.

Turning to one side and it does whatever it wants, turning back and forward in software.. When playing with keyboard and not touching knobs I see on the screen that some parametres moves in e.g. cut off; resonance, etc... Wt.... It is so sad that I payed nearly 600euros for MIDI keyboard that does what it wants and not what I want. It is such a shame... Now if I want that fixed I need to bring it to the store, then store will send it to arturia service and then it will be serviced, maybe.. and it will took about 2-3 months that I was informed in store that I bought it. I don't know if it's worth it to not have keyboard for 2-3 months..... Just wanted to share. Maybe you will advice something faster?... I hoped premium device for that price...
I bought it last week, but it didn't deliver because it got lost in transit, so I bought the Akai mini mpk mk3, but this is surely going to be my next one.
Thank you for your words at the end: It doesn't matter what midi controller you choose, just as long as you use it to make music with it. I needed to hear that more than you know. ~hugs. Hailey.
I read that you can adjust the pad sensitivity in the software suite, not sure how granular that is though without one yet myself. Edit: 7 months later since getting one myself, and the pads are indeed super stiff. There is a way to adjust their response curves inside the Arturia MIDI Control software. There's Linear, Log, and Exponential options for all keys and pads, yet you can't adjust the curves themselves granularly. I find the Log setting makes the pads the most responsive, but they're still stiff and accurate dynamics can be hit or miss. It's almost like they were made for real drum sticks or something other than your fingers. Haven't tried that yet. But really, that's a super minor complaint since everything else about the keyboard is awesome. It has an input for a foot pedal, midi jack, and a ton of other useful control options with shift and multiple profiles too. The knobs are super granular with dial speed adjustability. It's got everything you'd ever need in a portable midi keyboard.

i'm glad you pointed out the tap tempo. i need that for doing very portable backpack mini synth setup. Imagine a backpack full of mini synths and samplers. i want to record a loop, but i don't know the tempo, and i want to sample exactly 2 bars using a portable sampler's functionality to set the sample recording time to a specific length. say the sample tempo doesn't match the tempo of the project... this way, i can temporarily change the tempo of the sampler to match the sample i'm about to record, record it at the correct tempo, then set the sampler back, and know that the sample is a 2 bar long sample after i adjust the pitch or time stretch, etc. by the way, i mean portable mini synth setup as in NO computer, no laptop. just using the seq in the mini synths.
Taetro is the best "go to" guy for this stuff, great video as always. i own a MKII, im pretty happy with it, if it ever breaks i lll upgrade for 3 for sure.
I just pulled the trigger on one of these and I'm now waiting for it to arrive. I think your most important point was towards the end - it doesn't really matter what you pick, as long as you pick something :) Thanks for a great review.
I'm pretty sure they just came out 1-2 months ago, and not many people are interested in MIDI keyboards. Most go for electric guitars, pianos, etc etc... So that explains why there aren't much videos about this one
Taetro, thanks for this very informative video on the Minilab 3 and I especially liked how well you explained it's many features and what buttons to use to control them. Further more you showed us how to connect a hardware synth which was great, but I wonder if you would be willing to do another video showing us how to setup and control Pigments with the Minilab 3?
That Lemon Drop is pretty cool. Ableton Note just rolled out today... Has a similar look and feel to a Push 2 and with Ableton Cloud enabled on both ends, you can move your ideas right into Live. Pretty cool!
You are so Effing cool. I really love the videos. I bought the Minilab3 and a Microfreak and have been terrorizing my family. Every so often they come into the bedroom, give me that look and I swap the speaker out for headphones. I am really enjoying learning this stuff, thanks to you and your RUclips cohorts.
I think this might be my next MIDI keyboard. I sold my previous one because it was tied to a certain DAW, and transport controls worked only in that DAW, which didn't make sense for me. Deep integration with a certain DAW has it's own pros, you get more control on the MIDI keyboard itself, and that helps to not interrupt the creative flow, but I prefer versatility over deep integraion, so I think Arturia reached a good balance there. Also I like the Arturia keybed mechanism - my previous keyboard had a plastic-bending type of keys and that type is just messes with my head. Playing on that type of keys just doesn't feel like pleasurable experience, and I always afraid that plastic will break sooner or later, even if it's durable and there is no complaints about it. As far as I know, Arturia Minilab keys have individual spring for each key, so pressing the key should feel good and I guess it's more reliable than plastic-bending.
Thank you for talking about this! Was so excited for the announcement. Now as someone mostly drawn toward FL Studio, I'm genuinely torn between the FL Key Mini and the Minilab 3. They both look great and seem solid.
I had a hard time picking a midi controller because I was looking for a lot of different things and it turns out this was announced with all of the features I was looking for right when I was getting serious about purchasing one. 5 pin midi out is huge, good arpeggiator (I had a keystep for a while and regrettably sold it) and full ableton integration. Its like they heard my complaining about one controller not doing everything I wanted and made it. Might not be for everyone but wow they really figured me out. But yeah, just pick one and learn it. Thats the key move. Make music.
Great review. MK3 looks great and very promising. Really love the thing about faders and controlling each channel separately. But...Does it worth purchasing it while already having the MK2 plus my beloved Keystep 37 (midi in/out , arp , step seq, chord etc) ?
Last suggestion was amazing. Just start making music) Totally agree, waiting for my mk2 at the moment. 25y no music production knowledge but a lot of burning desire to make something cool🥰
That is a solid upgrade for an already awesome controller. Only things that I'm not a fan of are smooth design and lighter frame. What about keys in comparison with MK2? Same feel or better?
Dude, your so cool...love your vids! thanks for all of the advise/instruction, it is so helpful and the way you structure your content is the best...keep up the good work!
I have a question. How would I go about writing a user control script for this to use in Ableton Live 10? Update:- I managed to upgrade to Live 11 and I have to say I'm REALLY loving making music with this controller (Minilab3) it's a real pleasure to play. The drum pads are a huge step up from some of the 80's drum machines I have too. (Roland and Kawaii)
TAETRO makes accurate reviews... His video on the Minilab mkII is the reason I ended up getting it over other controllers, and having used it for about a month now, I really have to say that everything he mentioned was very accurate.
Great bideo tutorial! Is it possible to create your own custom chord voicings? Also, is it possible for the pads and encoders to output midi via separately from the global midi channel used for the keys? Subbed. Thanks❤
I bought the Auturia Analog Lab V and it worked perfectly the first time I used it but now the knobs, sliders and colors do not work. I even reinstalled it so, that would be one thing I would like to know that would be helpful. It recognizes my Minilab 3 but can only use the keys which is pathetic.
Thank you so much for sharing! After watching your video, I also especially like your little yellow synth, what model is that please? Where can I buy it?
I just saw a pad mod for the pads to make them more sensitive, which seems like the only drawback, I think you sold me on this as a clear choice... I honestly can't believe how inexpensive they are too.
Missing the point a bit but I LOVE THE KITTY! And can't agree enough with the most important point. I have the launchpad x and native instruments m32 but it's just sitting there most of the time. Time to stop spending more money but make music! Love your content Taetro. Keep it going!
I am looking to purchase one of these types of mini keyboards. The one feature that I do not believe is available on the Akai is key transposition. Am I understanding that correctly? It seems as if the Arturia does have the ability to transpose up or down semitones. Thanks for your advice.
How do you make LogicPro X to recognize the Analog Lab plug-ins as an audio input signal? I haven't found any specific tutorial inside of Arturia's own knowledgeable?
You're not alone. Just literally bought one last week too lol. Not sure if I want to send it back amd upgrade or wait. I use Reason and I was reading the mk3 connects to it flawlessly...
Hey man, Thanks for the input and your Nice videos Just got my minilab3 love it except I don' t have it in my surface control.. Just the one and two version..not 3. I'm.on ableton live 11 ( cracked..ouhh bad dude) . Maybe because needs to be updated? Thanks to you or the person that will help me Cheers from France
I think at this point latency is not an issue for most midi controller products, it is standard that you’ll be able to play in real time with no problem. However it’s more to do with your computer/device. If your computer can normally operate at a low enough buffer size, you’re good to go!
Great review man. I’m in the market for a controller and I’m stuck between the Akai APC 25 vs Arturia Minilab 3. I was initially looking at akai to switch my workflow a bit and have something to help me arrange my tracks from session views scenes more naturally as compared to the normal way. I will not be using the clips individually tho and it’s just to trigger each scene at a time in arrangement, seems like Arturia can do that for me as well and now I’m contemplating! I do have a question, just like the faders, do the knobs get auto assigned to the instrument of the track you’ve selected as well? Or you need to manually map everything each time for every different instrument in different tracks?
on the minilab 3, do you have to have a computer to be able to program what the controls do? i.e. if i want to set knob 1 to adjust a midi parameter on my roland aira p-6, like say the grain size, or the granular play head speed, can i, without a computer, program knob 1 on the minilab 3 to send a specific midi channel a specific cc# and range of values, etc? or can this only be done thru the computer? also can these setting be stored in the minilab 3 and does it have banks?
does the minilab 3 manual say how much power it uses? i will be using it with tiny portable synths like the lemondrop, and if the ONLY way the arturia minilab 3 gets power is thru the midi port, is it going to just kill the battery in the lemondrop?

Each individual Arp setting is mapped to one of those 8 knobs when you are in the settings. I have never used the menu again since I know that :D
Great review, listened, after I bought it and I dont regret my purchase at all.
Make music.
Ive been liking this channel so much! thanks for the content!
Thanks. Would love to see Studio One integration as well, like in the Keylab MK2.
Thank you so much for the amazing video. Seems like a fair upgrade to the MK2, but I believe still need some pad upgrade for me to change it. 🤔💜
Thanks Taetro, excellent demo.
Thanks SO much for all you do in your videos... Im an old school guy, and I have learned SO MUCH from you. really appreciate you!
Man, your watch is amazing. Whats the brand and model of it?
Great review. MK3 looks great and very promising. Really love the thing about faders and controlling each channel separately. But...Does it worth purchasing it while already having the MK2 plus my beloved Keystep 37 (midi in/out , arp , step seq, chord etc) ?
Last suggestion was amazing. Just start making music) Totally agree, waiting for my mk2 at the moment. 25y no music production knowledge but a lot of burning desire to make something cool🥰
That's all you need.
That is a solid upgrade for an already awesome controller. Only things that I'm not a fan of are smooth design and lighter frame. What about keys in comparison with MK2? Same feel or better?
Dude, your so cool...love your vids! thanks for all of the advise/instruction, it is so helpful and the way you structure your content is the best...keep up the good work!
thank you James!! I’ll try my best to keep it up!!
Thanks for an awesoema introdcution ti the Minilab3, it made me sold on it being the right solution. Just hope it arrives before christmas. :D
I hope so too!
They FINALLY added step transpose (works like a guitar capo) to the Mark 3. I have one coming tomorrow!
Great review! 👏
Love the review, plus the nail polish is nice too!
Thank you for the video!
Can the MiniLab 3 be connected directly to a standard USB to USB-C adapter to be used with a MacBook Air M3?
Well done! What is that yellow mini synth you used?
1010 Music Nanobox Lemondrop Granular Synthesizer
I have a question. How would I go about writing a user control script for this to use in Ableton Live 10?
Update:-
I managed to upgrade to Live 11 and I have to say I'm REALLY loving making music with this controller (Minilab3) it's a real pleasure to play. The drum pads are a huge step up from some of the 80's drum machines I have too. (Roland and Kawaii)
so it doesn't work with ableton 10?
Excellent tutorial My friend, it is very important that we help people more and more to know how to use this magnificent tool
Subbed. Thanks❤
The best unboxing I ever saw
Is analog lab 5 free with minilab lab 3 or not please tell me anyone i am very confused 😑🤙
They didn’t fix the one thing that bothered me about the mk2 😭 the damn pads!
For the use of the minilab, do you need to purchase the Arturia software?
a 32/37 key version would be amazing
love your videos taetro! might have to pick up the minilab 3 since DAW integration is so key xP anyway. amazing content as always.
I actually liked that the Minilab MKII is heavy.
Thank you so much for sharing! After watching your video, I also especially like your little yellow synth, what model is that please? Where can I buy it?
Getting one. Just what I’ve been looking for.
Can you replicate chord mode on the mk2 with software? Is it a massive difference to have it integrated on the mk3?
I just saw a pad mod for the pads to make them more sensitive, which seems like the only drawback, I think you sold me on this as a clear choice... I honestly can't believe how inexpensive they are too.
Thank you for this review 🙏🏻🧡
Missing the point a bit but I LOVE THE KITTY!
And can't agree enough with the most important point. I have the launchpad x and native instruments m32 but it's just sitting there most of the time.
Time to stop spending more money but make music!
Love your content Taetro. Keep it going!
If the port at the back can be a input for expression pedal, it might be a great (and only one at that budget) tool to use wah pedals for guitarists..
Thank you. very informative!
Is it possible to make a video using minilab 3 with GarageBand on iPhone please !!!
Great review mate, purchasing and subbing!
Aside from my Rotolog, the Dork Too is my favorite Nixon in my collection!
I just bought the minilab 2 a week ago 😭😭 I wish I knew this was coming out earlyer 😭😭
fr i only have mine for 1.5 months im so mad rn
You're not alone. Just literally bought one last week too lol. Not sure if I want to send it back amd upgrade or wait. I use Reason and I was reading the mk3 connects to it flawlessly...
I have a question. Do you think it's dumb if I buy the arturia minilab 3 even if i use logic? Or is there another keyboard that you recommend?
Guys are the faders assignable to anny CC#? I need to use them for expression and modulation for example.
Hey man,
Thanks for the input and your Nice videos
Just got my minilab3 love it except I don' t have it in my surface control.. Just the one and two version..not 3.
I'm.on ableton live 11 ( cracked..ouhh bad dude)
. Maybe because needs to be updated?
Thanks to you or the person that will help me
Cheers from France
How's the latency plugging directly into a Macbook? I don't see many people talking about it. Thank you, this video is awesome!
I think at this point latency is not an issue for most midi controller products, it is standard that you’ll be able to play in real time with no problem. However it’s more to do with your computer/device. If your computer can normally operate at a low enough buffer size, you’re good to go!
Where can we find the midi adapter to plug to the synth ? Thanks
Thank you for helping stop researching and just buy a keyboard, gonna order the pretty little mini lab right now.
Taetro! How do you map the foot control port in the back? I want to use an expression pedal to control pitch. The manual doesn’t say.
