  • A juror in the Parkland trial of Nikolas Cruz told Judge Elizabeth Scherer that they felt threatened by other jurors after revealing they wanted to recommend life in prison for Cruz. The prosecution filed a motion to have the juror questioned about what happened, and the judge was not sure if she had the jurisdiction to make such an order. The state said they were not attempting to set aside the verdict but wanted this looked into as a matter of safety for the jurors and court.

Then the person requested a complaint form which was blown off again. Apparently 2 jurors were trying to get her attention so if nothing else that should have made her pay attention and a 3rd juror must have realized how useless this judge was and bypassed her and called the prosecutor instead.

An investigation is already done and it wont change the sentencing outcome anyways, as the person who was threatened was voting for live and one other juror put her under pressure to vote for death, but she still voted for live- obviously nobody was pressured into voting for life as one juror is sufficient to get a life sentence. So , yes that juror who threatened one other juror for saving Niks life should be punished, but it wont have any effect on the verdict, because 3 jurors still voted for life.

Even after being told her assumption/jump to judgment was incorrect, she still shrugs it off & refuses to look into the motion. Or heck, even just apologize for her failure/ incompetence of ignoring the juror (s- now x2) request & complaints. All she did was give reason to question her overall competence. Shameful. She's the responsible party for this. All she had to do was take 2 mins to addr the 1st jurors request. If so, likely both jurors concerns could've been privately handled & quickly resolved. The need for this motion could've been eliminated & never filed. The jurors minds both eased & settled, knowing their concerns & safety were of the utmost importance. For those commenting that the judge is endangering the lives of the juror, as she already mentioned, the juror’s names have already been made public. The names are already apart of the public record and therefore if anyone wanted to find the information (for good, for bad, to interview, to ask about a book deal, etc.) all they have to do is look it up. Juror’s names are always released after the verdict and apparently their addresses are also often made available. I think that’s weird and it should all be kept private, but they obviously have their reasons since anonymous juries are rare.

In a death sentence case, the jury must be unanimous on a death verdict. If even one juror dissents---no death penalty. Three jurors dissented in this case---no death penalty. Now, if it turns out that anything threatening happened in the jury room, those who threatened need to be punished. We have seen so much juror misconduct in the past year, I think they are going to have to get much stricter and start seriously prosecuting jurors who do not abide by the rules.
