  • A quick talk about the dangers of going down the wrong career path, and a warning to those who might see themselves getting sucked into or already in it. I truly believe this is the best thing you can do for yourself, and for the world. There are so, so many ways you can find your own path and create your own life in 2024. It just takes looking deeper at what you want.
Sorry for the bummy video quality and for how dead i sound 😭 it's been a rough few months. It's also wild to be back here after so long. I'm honestly really looking forward to making more videos, just things that I think are important to talk about, and also personal projects + stuff. I hope you guys enjoy this type of content and even if you don't, I truly, genuinely want to thank you for the support you've given along the way. It's been a wild ride.
But anyways, more on the video. I honestly made this in a rush, I think there are few more things that are important to talk about:
Sustainability is absolutely going to be huge. I think I'm going to make a separate video on this alone, but the energy industry is going to have to start transitioning away from oil and gas. The threat of global warming and a collapsing global ecosystem is real and it's already here. There are tons of opportunities to get into sustainability as we start doing this on a global scale. Princeton had a conference recently where we had guest speakers from McKinsey, the EPA, Goldman Sachs, Harvard, and JERA, and it's all in relation to how we are going to basically start saving the planet. And when you have companies like BlackRock saying they're taking this seriously too, you know it's going to be the future.
I also take back some of what I said in the video 💀 I think tech especially is still a very relevant career option, and also financing the energy transition is still going to be a big question, so there are definitely jobs in finance/consulting/IB/VC that will be related to this. But seriously ask yourself if what you are working on is something you will be okay with. Consider what you will be doing with your job, and if you find yourself in it, ask whether you feel okay being in that environment. Just check in with yourself, think ahead, and ask yourself: Is this really what I want my life to be?
At the end of the day, we all have our own paths and I don't want to discourage you from doing something that you feel compelled to do. It's not my place THIS IS NOT FINANCIAL OR CAREER ADVICE or something like that. Okay that's enough rambling from me. Hope you all are doing well. Stay safe and take care.

To be objective and rip off the bandaid a bit here, it's not necessarily true at all. MLK was assassinated. Malcolm X was assassinated. Frederic Chopin, a man who gave so much beautiful music to the world, died a very slow and painful death at the age of 39. Bad things happen to good people; such is the reality of a Godless universe where the only rules are the laws of physics, and the laws of physics do not care about our desires. Very bad things happen to very good people. And if you're like me and you don't believe in an afterlife, there's no hope. There is certainly beauty and joy in the world but there is an enormous amount of senseless, purposeless suffering as well, and to not acknowledge that and to instead say comforting white lies is to deny reality.

@@JoeARedHawk275I think what Kenny means is that whatever human institution is in place, whether capitalism, socialism, etc. it will be flawed because humans are flawed. The people who are at the top of the system will of course, try to stay at the top. For example, the Government can start something like a UBI, but where do you think that money is going to come from? There is always a cost, nothing is free. People will say Europe has “ Free healthcare” , but forget to mention how heavily taxed they are, or how slow the care can be, or the quality of care decreasing due to lack of compensation. There are many factors, and I think history tells us the same story, the strong will rule the weak.

    • @TravisKing-pn7xm
      @TravisKing-pn7xm 4 месяца назад

I guess a question I would ask is, is it the institutions fault, or the students who fall for their advertising? I think an argument can be made for both. Yes, we want people to pursue things that will improve their quality of life, but much of school is those same people (people who work for schools) trying to improve their quality of life by advertising their “product”. So why do I need to take a communications class in college? Because it’s a required elective credit. It’s built into the school system in order to support those teachers who decided to pursue that career path. I would say that’s a fault of the schools. A fault of students would be going to college when you have know Idea what you wanna do. Everyone goes to college, if you wanna be successful you go to college. All of your peers are applying and it can feel weird not just following the crowd. Your Parents might be against it but that’s no excuse to go to college. Then you can end up spreading money on something you don’t care about. We need to change the culture around school and the schools themselves.

I'm going to touch on something else - pressure. From such an early age were pressured with this idea that our lives are only worth how great of a school we can get into, how much money we have to spend, & what we do for work. That's why many school kids such as myself feel pressured to "get ahead" as much as possible, and that often leads to us rushing into situations were not truly comfortable/sold on. We end up doing them anyway cause we're pretty much told that we need "to be the best," but like, come on! Does soul searching just not happen anymore? It's like there's no focus on character development, humility, and giving back to your community - just making sure YOU get ahead.
I find this extremely trash, and thanks to your videos & my own personal reflections, I've been able to shed some of my toxic beliefs related to school (standing out & doing everything I can to get into a "top college" even If I don't know if that school's good for me) - so thank you!

From reading your paragraphs, I see and acknowledge your frustrations. However, your thoughts are availability heuristics biased. A moderate pressure can give us motivation, drive to achieve financial knowledge and let us evaluate our career. Sometimes, doing something you like for a hobby is better than doing it for a living for example. Most of what you mentioned, are available as subjects related to humanity, literature, arts. Students in those environments tend to find more materials like books, news, etc to read and develop themselves. They should also be somewhat influenced by society, parental teaching, religions, philosophy teaching in school, etc.

She was relating her experience of what may have been traumatizing psychodramas from her dysfunctional family and their toxic relationship with success and each other. Your paltry dismissal via psychobabble is tantamount to an insult; at the very least it’s an insensitive minimization. Go psychoanalyze yourself.
As far as going into humanities fields, forget expecting that to lead directly to self-development. No, I have experience studying those things and it’s simply another funnel of garbage being poured into your head. Self-inquiry is not taught outside of a blurb next to a specimen under glass. On the contrary, seeing the flippant way these subjects are sometimes taught can turn a student away from them. Or, if they’re lucky the acquired knowledge will merely be an impediment.
Anyway, the pressure is real. Maybe you’ve had it soft. Let others express their pains and try actual empathy and showing in a way that shows you can relate. “Availability heuristics”. Jfc.

Hi! Honestly, the part where you talked about how we're frying our brains really resonated with me. I have my last final for this semester on Monday and I've been on Netflix all day...if I didn't come across this video I probably would have watched another movie. I guess procrastination is a part of it, but it's so easy to forget reality when you're on the internet. Like you said, I quite literally "stop using my brain." If I were being rational, I would study for finals, read a book, or do something valuable with the spare time I have. It's not that I'm unaware of the other options, but it's just that I momentarily forget. Genuinely speaking, it feels good to ignore your responsibilities, and technology makes it 10x easier to do so. You're right, we should make it a habit to actually monitor how we spend our time. Watching Netflix all day isn't helping humanity or my future(I know that), but I kind of didn't realize until someone reminded me. It's nice to see you with a video out after such a long time!!

Thank you so much for your candor! I feel like so many people are after the wrong kinds of jobs. I can even concede that I was after those kinds of jobs where it was over-glamorized. I was in an internship working until 2-3am and it was wreaking havoc on me to the point where I just broke down. I now got a job with a company I worked with in my assigned clinicals and despite the pay being lower, I could not be happier to have my peace of mind and work on something I actually enjoy. Life is so much more than money. I had a friend the other day bragging about her salary in that industry and she doesn’t know how corporate politics is. I wish her the best, but I am glad to be out of that kind of toxic environment. Also, the school you go to isn’t everything. It’s wonderful you got into Princeton, but for those who didn’t, work hard at the school you got into. You don’t need to kill yourself over not getting into an Ivy League. Success is not solely defined by what school you go to. It’s what you make of it.
I also agree with that fact that the amount of time people waste on their phones is horrendous. Even people in their early to mid twenties… they think being anti-social and staring at your phone instead of being interactive looks cooler when they look like a total dimwit. I even noticed that when I spend too much time on my phone that I almost feel like my brain is lagging. Your phone can be a useful tool, but you should not be mindlessly scrolling through apps. As you said, we have a lot of potential. We should be working towards that and not wasting time. Keep putting these videos out here. Same thought. I would encourage anyone to not pursue a top level university. It sucks. If you think about it, you are just one of many in there, it’s not worth the unhappiness, don’t get pressured by family, friends, reputation, grades or any of that. Pursue something YOU want, pursue a career YOU want, pursue the life YOU want.

Hi Quon, I'm currently a sophomore in high school and I can definitely attest to the brain rot! I have found myself steering down this path and I would like to do everything I can to avoid it. I have been signing up for many AP classes and considering some of these elite universities without really having a reason why, and I would like to thank you for helping me understand that I need a real reason for everything I do. Please keep making these kinds of videos, it's SO hard to find honest, genuine people on RUclips these days and it is a lifesaver for highschoolers out there like me who have big aspirations and can benefit from someone's perspective in the outside world. Don't give up hope, any knowledge acquired is useful knowledge!

My advice to you is not to have too much on your plate. You may think it's not that bad taking a lot of AP classes, but it is so heavy. Never take more than 15 credits ever. I'm serious, anyone telling you 18+, tell them to f off. Make sure you enjoy college but study. Never slack off ever, study enough so you created fun time but like I said before, you must have fun. If not, you will hate college. You probably don't need this advice, but I am so burnt out and I made some mistakes which I wish I could change.

@@cghgaming5497im a senior in highschool now and one of the things i learned after talking to some professors is that if you want have a good undergraduate education where it feels like you are getting the attention and resources you need, it is best to avoid big name schools or just schools with high research activity in general. i guess the idea is that they tend to focus more of their resources and time on research and graduate education and the undergrads are sort of the last thing on their list. so obviously you still want to get into a recognizable school but you also want to make sure you are getting the most out of your time and money, my plan to take my final costs of attendance for the schools i applied to and the starting salaries for my major at those schools and that will most likely lead me to a smaller more affordable schools where i can get a good education as well as a valuable degree

I got a likely letter from Columbia and from Johns Hopkins for the bme program. My dream my entire life was to go into medicine and research, and I truly felt compelled towards Hopkins for that reason. My dad agreed, but all my friends said that medicine would not make me “rich by 30” and I would be in debt. They told me to go to Columbia and study finance, as there is a strange fixation with youth over jobs that allegedly would provide the quickest path to riches, morality and true substance of the career aside. I am heavily leaning towards Johns Hopkins now after watching this video. I want to be a doctor, I want to truly add to this world, not make my career off of exploiting people. Thank you for this video :)

Such good insight and similar thinking of what I thought about when I entered Pomona College as a freshman recently and am graduating soon. 100% thought I was gonna be Econ Major + Investment Banking postgrad, but had a lot of conversations with myself, friends, and God and felt called to something more creative. Then became a photographer in the music industry, have shot billboards in Times Square/magazine covers, toured the world shooting one of my favorite musicians, all while in school. This isn't to brag but that to prove that if you feel called to something else, your passion will motivate you to work on side projects/grind and you'll see comparable goals being reached but in an avenue MUCH MUCH MUCH more fulfilling to you.

I'm a couple years out of college. Also went to an Ivy. You're a smart dude asking and thinking about the right questions, but I think your perspective will evolve, mature, and ultimately change. The traditional Ivy path of going into finance, consulting, or tech is well-trodden for a reason, and it's more than just that they're lucrative, though that's obviously a major factor. These paths will expose you to the highest levels of work done in the biggest and most impactful enterprises across our country. And the impact of making significant money while young is not to be understated. The financial freedom it unlocks for you will allow you to make bigger moves in a direction you specifically want to go down later, and you'll doubly be well-armed with a strong network and skillset. I just want to caution against this mindset that your immediate job post-grad determines the rest of your life. I know lots of people from years above me in college who did banking/consulting/some type of tech role like software engineering and are doing interestingly different things now. They're not bad launch pads to do cool things later on. Totally agree with you on your point about brain rot, though.

I feel the same. It's like he just had a 'revelation' and had to reveal with us all and influence young adults with his ideals which are subjective. People should refer to Maslow's Hierarchy of needs to see that financial freedom is the first thing they need to pursue higher level. From my point of view, colleagues and environment make a big difference despite whatever career of your choice. It's like going to a hard maths class you hate but everyone encourages and helps you out, you become better and enjoy it more in the end, and if you don't, you can quit but with good friendships and connections, also knowledge, experiences, which contribute to future success, happier life.

I think the main thing you forget in you’re addressing of his statements is the fact that he speaks about the lack of meaning, and contribution to society in a positive way that many of these career paths and the subsequent providers offer. You can become the greatest guy in finance but how much are you doing for society? Do you believe in God? Who are you held accountable to for your reasonable sacrifices and service to the world? This life is about more than lining our pockets, or being innovative, it’s about helping those who are in need, because that’s the only thing that’s gonna matter in your death, whether you knew Christ and whether you helped the people that were in need on this earth. That’s just one perspective, the most concrete one I believe..

I have deleted most of my socials, but still struggle to not be on youtube for too long. Some of my friends are completely addicted to tiktok and twitter and instagram, and it is sad and I wish they could at least try to take a break from it. It is kind of difficult because even though I feel a lot better mentally without social media, it can be isolating especially for people that rely on that for their connection, to get rid of them. Good luck to everyone out there on their journey.

I really relate to your life advise and regrets video too so can see a lot of stuff I can look forward to improve on. Im a junior in highschool rn and gotta apply for college internships and was wondering if Bio/Stem/Chem internships would be good options for internships that would be meaningful/service to humanity like you mentioned. • @QuonHowery02
      @QuonHowery02  5 месяцев назад +11

hi, thanks for the comment! those are great places to start, I think the most important thing at this point is to just keep learning and finding what you like and what you don't like. it seems like you already like sciences so keep trying things related to stem. i wouldn't stress too much about being of service just yet, but i'm honestly so impressed and it makes me so hopeful seeing you talk about this! for now, spend time digging into what you are best at. what do you like doing? and just keep trying things, like the internships. everything you do teaches you about what you like or don't like. and more importantly, ask the people who you are working for about their experience! ask about the industry they work in, ask about what kind of work they've done in the past. see if anything they say clicks for you. everyone can be a teacher if you let them and see what they have to say.
also i don't want to discourage anyone who might be interested in tech. i think i was a bit too absolute in the video. coding and computer science are still extremely relevant today, and if that's something you really enjoy, please don't let me stop you from pursuing it! keep building your skills and developing your passions, for whatever interests you. it's more so about what you use those skills for. writing code for google so they can make a button 0.1 seconds faster is not really doing much. on the other hand, using code to model climate change, or using AI to optimize agricultural practices, or using it to design more efficient public transportation, are definitely contributing more to humanity.
but yes, going back to your point. bio, chem, physics, and other stem fields, those are all great places to be applying to, and see if you can find what the internship is about beforehand as well.

Also, as a student worker as well, I do feel like the motivations and experiences are different from those from a background where we're just trying to get enough money to pay rent/help out family/various experiences - HOWEVER, I do still thinking finding what you're truly passionate about and pursuing that is still very important.

Just a note from a fellow engineer: AI won't replace any master's degree jobs and it's not right now. Big companies are hiring less just because they over-hired a few years ago (it was super easy to get into Google, BCG, and JPMorgan back in 2015 for example). So you shouldn't worry that much: as long as you keep studying you'll find a nice job. If this job is going to be a multinational company or in a smaller firm really depends on the market condition in 2 years and we cannot make any prediction about that.

I recently wrapped up the college application cycle applying as an environmental science major and I was initially very skeptical and worried about missing out on consulting/ib/tech jobs but kept telling myself that I was making the right choice following my genuine interest. I just wanted to say thank you, and this video really makes me feel better about my decision. Definitely want to pursue this path either at a big company or by starting a startup even more now. Thank you for the motivation.

Your upload schedule speaks volumes for your honesty, this is a breath of fresh air by comparison to the onslaught of spam being put on the internet lately. Thank you! ❤
P.S. We need more authentic content like this to be pushed by the algorithm, and less of the mister beast-esque producers churning out video after video like it's a factory line. It worries me that people can now say being a "influencer" is their profession. Most (but not all) of them end up giving a net-negative back to our societies psyche, and yet our current financial model rewards such negligence. I hope this is just a temporal imbalance, and not a sign of what's to come.

Self assessments and personality tests are the single misunderstood and underutilized skills in our school system. Once you know how your mind works, what you easily gravitate towards and learn a skill around that you've won the game of life. I'm an INTJ so science and innovation come very easy. So easy that it's hard to explain how I understand stuff to those it doesn't come easy to. I chased money in real estate for so long until I too finally burned out because it was always HARD for me to do. I don't fight hard to create, innovation and engineer things.
PS. I truly hope you're doing good. Thanks for sharing!
