I applied to MIT long ago. I did not get in and went to another IT and ended up with IBM. But microelectronics has changed everything. IBM is not what it was.
The United States could have and should have made accounting/finance mandatory in high schools since Sputnik.
I did not get my ego wrapped up in my job even at IBM. I bought a 4-unit apartment building. Rodding out the plumbing was so much fun, but the tenants paid the mortgage.

My closest friend from grade school got his PhD from Harvard. We're in our mid-30s now. Not that long ago, he was visiting me. He's trying to land a tenure-track job in his field (a common liberal arts field). He started drinking early, and late in the night, he burst into tears.
He shared about how his drinking is causing problems, he can't seem to maintain a stable relationship, things are strained with his family, and he feels like a failure because he's not tenure-track. Big, round tears rolled down his face. He was miserable. I had no idea how much he was suffering. My whole life, I looked at him as someone who had this charmed life. He had achieved at the very highest levels. He did whatever he wanted to do. I'm very proud of him.
I went to community college, and I work a humble job as an electrical engineer. But he wasn't comparing himself to me. He was comparing himself to the best-of-class at Harvard's graduate program. And of course, he wasn't measuring up.
It was a wakeup call for me, too. But professional success doesn't always make you happy.

Oh man you are right on the comparison part. I got my dream job right after college in a location full of people with education like him, I decided to leave all of them 5 years later because I do not see myself living that life forever. Now I live in middle America, a place where more "normal" people lives and my mental health has basically been restored to normal. And yes I work as an average tech engineer too and there is nothing wrong with that where I live now.

Living in a different country, my gamer friends and me saw each other a lot in our twenties and early thirties. Regardless of university, degrees and the like the outcomes are really good if there are no drugs or alcohol involved. I look like an underachiever with 130K p.a. comparing my income to theirs and a few totally fell down but were not forgotten. Life is more than money and career. But it’s also true that one can still go forward in their thirties or fourties.

The amount of rejections I got over that time was an insane amount to the point where I assumed every email back was automatically a rejection. I worked as a valet for about a year and a half before I broke in. And that first job sucked too, was a third party engineering firm that got the busy work for bigger engineering companies. A big part of my problem is that I don't know what specific career path I want to take at this moment. When I went to college to study math, I didn't really have a specific career path in mind. I just did it because it was interesting to me. Being autistic further compounds the issue. I still hope that I will find my passion some day.

Make sure you are tenacious and always get up when you are knocked down. These are basic principles, but are much more than cliches. Even though I had low expectations for myself coming out of HS because I was convinced I had already failed at life I still forced myself (partially to appease my parents) to go to college for computer science and I literally didn’t even enjoy it half the time. I spent the last year since I graduated aimlessly wandering around for work which I recently found but now I’m convinced I could very well burn out before I’m 30 and find myself a vegabond again for the first half of my 30’s.

Thank you for the video! Google showed your video on my feed. I am 65 but very interested in what young people have to go through today. My first impression was, yeah -- my generation had it easier. College tuition was much lower, and jobs were much more plentiful, mostly because jobs were more diverse back then. But on the other hand, based on my experience with nieces and nephews, getting into college in the 70's was more difficult than today (of course, ivy-league and private schools are tough back then too). Colleges accepted less people since campuses and facility was not that large (all of that changed with school decided they wanted to be profitable). There were no ACT or SAT exams -- I had to be smart for my entire high school career. You could not get a student loan unless you proved to a banker that you were a good risk/investment. There was zero grade inflation at the high school and college level and there were no mechanisms to challenge a bad or "unfair" grade. There was also a lot of cultural bias, you went to college to be a doctor or a lawyer, not much else. As far as jobs -- there were not that many jobs where a college degree was considered necessary. Companies preferred to grow their own talent. So yes, in my day things were easier, but there was still a lot of uncertainty. The biggest difference is that in my day, if you did not go to college, you could become a farmer or a factory worker to support your family -- those are no longer options today. Today, I feel that young people are as freer to be themselves, thus you have a lot more options! But for all generations, hard work and grit are still required to build an independent life. Good luck.

MIT grad here (2021) who is going through similar struggles!!! I studied meche with focus on product design. I didn’t know that following my interest in softer sciences would launch me into a super competitive field, especially with the current tech layoffs. I also come from first-gen low-income background with dreams to provide financially for my family. I know at least a few other friends going through the same thing. Right now, I work at a nonprofit as a project coordinator and pursue singing and acting when I can.
Older professionals are surprised when I share the difficulty of finding a job with an MIT degree. It’s hard to explain to my parents too - after so much work and sacrifice, should it not just work out?
On the flip side, my time spent traveling after MIT has shown me all the different ways of building a fulfilling life. MIT degree still opens doors for freelancing opportunities, so I can travel and make art and make a living. Time unemployed gave me the gift of time to care for health and really understand what skills I could offer. All this to say - thanks for sharing!! You’re not alone!! We should make a support group for all MIT grads going through this.

Omg…i literally feel u! I think some of our experience are kinda similar…In high school, i thought that top uni is everything you need to land that “perfect” job that u want. Lucky enough, i got accepted to one of the best school in my country, however, during my final year, when i was searching for internship position, no one wanted to hire me in 2023. Long story short, I graduated last Oct 2023, still had no internship experience under my belt. And then, i somehow ended up getting a full time job in a startup. Had i not got it, there would be a high chance that i would probably still be unemployed up until today…although now i can feel relieved bcs i already have a job now, realizing that the tech industry is very unstable these days (lots of layoffs, the job market is not so good rn) sometimes makes me contemplate on whether i should keep pursuing tech job again in the future or not…

Very relatable...another part of the convo (for me and many others) is graduating right before the pandemic. I graduated in mid 2019 with no post-grad plan besides "take a little break then look for a job", and obviously I wasn't going to find a job when the world shut down (esp with my somewhat "useless" lit degree), but I still beat myself up for that for about... hmm.. until a couple months ago lol. The times are not in new graduates' favor unless, like you said, you got the right things on your resume and the right people in your corner at the right time. And no one can predict what those "right" things look like, so it's a gamble if you don't have generations of college grads in your family guiding you through the system - which I did not have.
Lately I'm also turning to creativity via making videos to bring joy back into my life, and I'm also taking the next best guess at what I want to do, since the whole writer/editor/marketer thing I tried for 2+ years just isn't viable or particularly interesting to me anymore. Which (also similar to you with math/science) was hard to let go of because it's the thing I'm good at and has always made me stand out in school, so I thought I was throwing away my potential by not chasing a related career. But now I'm shifting to the mindset of finding work that suits my personality and my lifestyle goals instead of just trudging through job muck to find a writing-related job I probably won't even like, based on my previous experiences.

Great video Rooi, I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. It's particularly nice hearing from another Korean-American about failure, haha. I had so many plans for myself in high school... and no one of them worked out. Having lived in Korea, I sometimes feel sorry for what my relatives, friends, and colleagues had to/have to endure in the relentless "bali bali" culture. Then I remember that I'm not doing amazingly myself, and that maybe they should feel sorry for me, lol. I hope you get the RUclips success you're looking for! Hopefully 2024 is the year that we all take off in the ways we hope to do. If not, well, maybe we just need to be a little more patient and resilient. 화이팅!

It was just so frustrating that i cannot tell her that it physically, mentally and emotionally pains me to be someone i am not. Wow, the amount of courage to post this! You and I have almost the same life! Graduated from UC Berkeley focusing on environmental science thinking that there would always be an opportunity for a job in that field since, when I was choosing, I was told that green jobs would be blossoming. I ignored all the other parts of me that just made it hard to get hired. I was a jack-of-all-trades person too, had a secret artistic passion, and was secretly an autistic introvert. I became the extrovert who specialized in one thing and ignored the hole growing inside me. I did this because I thought that eventually if I suffered a little more, I would finally be able to support myself and my parents only to be passed up for a promotion I really needed. I couldn't hold out any more and I got severely burnt out. I quit my job, looked into tech to find a job that fits my lifestyle, and now realize that the grind is just as much if not even harder there. It's like there is no winning. I created a blog in the meantime and am looking into making my own creative works.

I did my first master's in Geography and it was really hard to find a job. After 3 years of working in a not-so-nice job, I quit and started another master's in Computer Science. Now I can have every job I like. What I want to say with this is that you should not just study anything (as I did with my first degree) - pick a subject that someone will pay you for that knowledge. My bf studied also Geography and he became a researcher and makes good money - so yes, there will always be people studying "useless" things and making a good career but mostly it's bcs these people are the best and/or have a special social talent. The better your skills the more money you will make. The harder it is to get a degree the easier you will get a job bcs only a few people will be in that competition. It took me 10 years to understand that but I'm happy I found my way before becoming 30... :) Wish you all the best!

I don’t comment on videos normally. But I just wanted to say that as someone who is also a totally independent working, Jack of all trades style employee in the tech space, who also clawed their way up from the bad part of town to grind 12 hour days 6 days a week from their tiny luxury apartment, I appreciate you trying to communicate to others what you’ve learned. You don’t learn the faults in how you aspire and dream in school. You learn them the hard way, by getting as close as you can to the pie in sky and realizing the plotted trajectory of your goals actually lead to misery and competitive isolation. All that being said, you seem like you’d be an absolute joy to work with. I hope you keep doing your thing, whatever it may be or become.

"Doki-doki for the future" is a sentence that I never thought someone would actually say. It's funny though.
TBH my parents also really wanted me to be rich from college, despite them having no idea how the system worked. Instead I joined the Army and learned to go pew pew for a bit. And that hardworking, intense, disciplined environment made me want to never work again. So on my time off I literally thought of ways to never work again. Like... I would have to get up for 1 or 2 hours a day in the middle of the night for guard duty. And I just spent that time thinking on how to make money without a job. I did that instead and am free. But I also have no purpose in life anymore.

Haha you found ur audience of unemployed uni graduates struggling with the job search. I am a NYU CS 2023 grad (math minor too lol), but moved back home since it was hard to find new grad roles in US due to how bad the tech market was for internationals (even with my research/internships experiences). Been looking since Sept 2023, and currently doing some interviews.
This unemployment period has certainly been transformative for self reflecting. Decided not to pigeonhole myself to just tech roles since the tech market in my home country is even worse/smaller than USA for juniors. But I do think it just takes time and patience, since I started getting more interviews starting this year so fingers crossed haha.
Also hard relate with everything. I feel much less alone. We are all indeed so similar while being different. Loved your nuanced takes and editing aesthetics. Proving myself to or comparing with others and craving social validation led to so much suffering. Had a midlife crisis few months back which helped to disillusion myself and be more grounded/stable in my self-worth (reading Buddha's works helped too).

Just hey I want to work here and can learn can you train me? They all started (union jobs) with the equivalent of 100k a year with a highschool diploma after adjusting for inflation if you had any skill. They paid 15k for their house and we get to hear how hard it was and how we are spoiled. They worked at a McDonalds for 1 summer to pay for college and man what a sacrifice ....
