This is one of my favorite stories of weird medical history. It's pretty much exactly the same reason that people today refuse vaccines… we've gotten too comfortable with not having diseases, so we're forgetting the cure.
dude your pretty cool. Sometimes i feel like people do not love knowledge enough and me as well, but this is a great way to learn and stay informed. Thanks man
they would also say, "huh,AIDS. such an easy to treat disease . they didnt find a cure for so many years . plague and ebola , you can cure that by eating chocolate . HAHAHAH
I think we could.. but better question would be why? Gene editing is very dangerous and complicated thing, so by editing this one gene to permanently cure scurvy we could afflict the edited humans with other much more life threatening flaws/diseases.. I admit that when we progress in genetics we could learn what to edit and which other genes we must edit to circumvent the potential downsides of the treatment. It could be impossible to fix some genetic flaws because the fixes for the fixes would cause all the time more to fix and in the end we would be writing over most of the humans genome and still there could be flaws. So maybe we should still treat scurvy with healthy diet for now and remember robots don't need vitamins, there's always that : P
***** This still does not answer the problem. Although we have literal pigs to test this stuff on still even small difference of one gene can put all the work back on the drawing board. It might be just too big of a problem to even solve.. Kind of like quagmire, only solvable by cutting it apart on fundamental level.. I believe that many of these genetic flaws are only solvable by enhancing or replacing body parts / body with something else e.g. robotics. But these are things only work and research funds can tell.
A man at a local university became an urban legend when his diet consisted of raman noodles, handed out free at orientation, and beer. He went to the doctor and was the first scurvy diagnosis in over 50 years.
He was the lucky one, must cases of scurvy go undiagnosed because most doctors today only get an hour or so of training on nutrition in medical school.
It's pretty amazing that most people today know so much more about medicine than the experts a few hundred years ago. If we lived in that time, we could all literally be world-famous doctors.
WatsonAndDaughter Well, someone can test that in a study. Modern medicine is based partially on science and mostly on corporate greed. We just have to funnel more into the science part.
+WatsonAndDaughter this is not true. They've been seen to have some level of anti cancer properties but no where near as effective as the medicine that is prescribed. Don't spread things that are untrue
Very beautiful... I once overlooked Vsauce2 and Vsauce3's channels because how awesome Michael can explain stuff about my favorite topics. You modernized my mind, and unlocked my cage, Kevin.
+Joshua Knode No, it's just a different way of getting certain knowledge. Any knowledgeable person would know that.. Don't create your own biases or misinform because you like doing certain things above others. If a read a kids book I'd learn nothing. If I watched a vsause video, I'd learn certain individual things. If I watched an hour long video about the history of something and how it functions, I'd learn just as much as reading a book explaining that same process. No certain way of obtaining information is inherently more significant than others..
Dedicated teachers that keep their students interested ? On what planet do you live? I went to school into '80 and '90, and barely 10-20% of all my teachers could be put into that category. And our education system was miles ahead of american one, I don't even want to guess how many actual good teachers you have. While most teachers should be proud of teaching the young generation, what I observed more commonly, is they get jealous for brightness of their pupils and in most cases unconsciously, squash that in their students.

There's a big difference between scurvy and cancers. Scurvy was something completely unknown to the people at the time, while known carcinogens, such as flouride, chloroform, pesticides, etc. are knowingly placed into the food and water that supply the public. Cancer is caused on purpose, these ancient illnesses were not. Regardless, there is already a cure for cancer (www.sott.net/article/228583-Scientists-cure-cancer-but-no-one-takes-notice), so you're mistaken anyway. Have a good day.
The video has had 3 different pictures for me now, it was first not censored at all, then there was a black box over the teeth now it's like a pixelated blur?!
Holy shit was this ever a high quality video. well done! entertaining and informative to the max donate everyone, we have to honor this sort of content! The ending is a bit cheesy though :D but keep it coming!
It's actually a term referring to British people (in general), not just any sailor. Because British sailors were the first to drink lime, Americans started calling British sailors limeys. And overtime it became a term referring to all British people. Not all sailors, but all British people (mostly English).
That's not cringe worthy this is cringe worthy Example of a cringe worthy individual: A fedora-wearing misanthrope who also happens to enjoy My Little Pony and always complains about being "forever alone". Sometimes, he carries fake swords and attaches fake furry tails to his pants and walks around in public pretending he is not human. Please use the word appropriately.
I'm hungarian and it's really funny how he pronounces Szent-Györgyi Albert's name, it made me smile every time, but nevermind, that's not the point of the video.
Yeah it's funny but you can't blame him, the "gy" sound doesn't exist in English and is really hard to master by non-native speakers. In fact it might be only used in Hungarian as "similar" sounds in other languages I heard are quite different to my ears. I understand that some obscure Asian or African languages might use it but I have no way to verify this.
Jon W explains it very well, but I suggest to use google translate, type the name, set it to hungarian then click on the little speaker icon. Also, with a little research, I'm pretty sure everyone can find lecturing videos about the hungarian alphabet.
Agreed. In a few hundred years (or hopefully less) we'll see things like in the novel Neuromancer, where you'll be able to go to the clinic down the street and pay them to give you insane martial arts skills. Not to mention curing cancer, AIDS, and other currently-incurable diseases. Maybe even aging. Anyone who doesn't know what CRISPR is, go watch the Kurzgesagt video on it. The times we live in are absolutely incredible.
You know that those algorithms are badly flawed, susceptible to dishonest tagging and frequently overridden by _other_ algorithms trying to expand overall viewer base and clickthrough rates, right? Nothing very wrong with this vid - apart from the stomach-churning thumbnail - but it has no place whatever in my recommended videos either.
I see that you have been taking over Vsauce 1's mojo. Thank you. Ever since youtube red took over I've been without these kinds of inspired videos. Thank you.
this is the reason people would suck on limes. There is a genetic disease that is the equivalent of scurvy as well. It is called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. If you read about explorers, it also tells of men tieing the soles of their feet and wrapping them to keep the soles from completely falling off. Unfortunately, this still occurs. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and have blue rings in the whites of my eyes. It destroys the autonomic nervous system, so the stomach doesn't empty causing vomiting everything up. Until a gastric pacemaker is put in or a feeding tube, you starve to death......because it takes forever for docs to realize you aren't bulimic because they suck at listening, they allow scurvy to develop. To the extent that you start losing your teeth because your gums fall away from your teeth.
I hope your feeling better mang. Ive heard that there's an outbreak of chronic lyme disease in cities close to the oceans. For some reason doctors don't think it exists anymore even though there are people dying from it.
holy shiet i didnt think id ever find another person who has ehlers danlos syndrome i have a different type though, and mine was diagnosed when i was 11 but it was already too late for me, im in a wheelchair atm because my knees hurt too much for me to be able to walk
Not only restrict ourselves from questioning things but the problem is when we restrict ourselves from arguing such questions and answers. Usually both sides are wrong about any argument, to solve it we need a consensus between both the wrong and right aspects for both sides of an argument.
Ender Skies The world ain't black and white, buddy. Just because you're a liberal doesn't mean you're on the side of "right". Right and wrong are meaningless concepts unless a being with power greater than our own told us what was right or wrong. Hence the 10 Commandments. Besides, science isn't always solid. We may know something now, only later to find we were completely wrong. The side of "science" only has credibility in the present.
And then there were the Hanse, the northern German and Netherland trading houses located on the coast of the North and the Baltic Sea during the 14th and 15th century. Their sailors rarely if ever suffered from scurvy. Because they carried along a (at that time) very prevalent and traditional food stock: Sauerkraut. Thanks to the fermentation this long lasting and storable vegetable had large amounts of vitamin C and kept their sailors healthy. Healthy if not happy.
When a flower is feritilzed, it forms a fruit. When a rose is fertilized, it forms a fruit known as a rose hip. It looks a little like a small cherry tomato. Roses are in the same family (roseceae) as apples, pears, quinces, medlars, loquats, almonds, peaches, apricots, plums, cherries, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries. (fruit list provided by Wikipedia) One of the puropses of a fruit is to protect the genetic information it contains in its seeds. Antioxidants, such as vitamin C, serve this purpose.
Merely thinking about something in a new way isn't the most essential part to discovering new truths, figuring out a way to test it is. The reason why they were so frequently wrong about stuff in the 16th century is because they didn't employ the scientific method. They simply came up with an idea that adequately explained all the facts and then let the popularity of the idea decide if it was true or not. Today we go about things differently. We come up with an idea that explains all the facts, and then put it through a destructive test, trying everything we can think of to prove the idea wrong, until only the truth survives.
And our tests are always perfect and complete, we all agree to hold it to that standard even when it could mean the destruction of our careers, and we never, knowingly or unconsciously, overlook conditions that bias experiments to certain outcomes because of past belief, right? =P Unfortunately science is not yet separate from academia, and among academics there are politicians.
Aetrion So the fact that things exist is the problem here? So say you want to mow your lawn. You could use a mower, but instead you have someone cover the entire thing in napalm and drop a match. The grass is shorter now, but the fact that one method killed everything is really just the garden's fault for existing.
Jake builds a spaceship. Kevin sits in a kiddie pool. Michael stands in room. Apparently production values are inversely proportional to vsauce number.
Thank you for information, looks like my father suffering from this disease and doctors never told about this disease to him they just said it is iron that is coloring his legs skin, he have very dark leg skin. This video might saved my fathers life.
They had to drink alcohol because water would become stagnant or infected when stored for an extended period of time. Essentially beer was their water.
Anthony LaFlare I can't claim to be much of a beer drinker. But the typical "bottle" of modern day beer is 12 oz. So a gallon would be 10 and 2/3 bottles. I imagine someone could drink that much in a 16 hour day and not be stumbling drunk, no?

Imagine is thousands of years, people would look back at us and say look at them they suffered from cancer for hundreds of years.
Cancer likely dates back to our origin.
Hopefully, we’re still using the right methods to find cures. Then we should be respectable, much like Lind was for his clinical trial.

People in 2200 ":How da hek did people in 2016 not know that using ________ can solve cancer!!!"
hahahhaa
Makes me sad to think of everything I'm going to miss out on in the future.
+DERRG I know right! I wish I could see whats ahead of us.
I wouldn't really call a link to a crackpot site which fundamentally misunderstands the results of an actual study sciency personally.
I came here to see deseased sailors and actually learned some epistemology! Cool VSause2!
That's always the turn Vsauce takes and it's perfect to have that torch carried onto Vsauce2
I came here to read smart comments and I actually learned a new word! Seriously, I don't think I've ever heard epistemology before.
Sorry yeah I meant diseased, English is not my first language sorry.
The video has had 3 different pictures for me now, it was first not censored at all, then there was a black box over the teeth now it's like a pixelated blur?!
yeah!
Holy shit was this ever a high quality video. well done! entertaining and informative to the max
donate everyone, we have to honor this sort of content!
The ending is a bit cheesy though :D
but keep it coming!
one can't donate it turns out
The reliance of many sailors on limes is also the origin of the term "limey" to refer to a sailor.
It's actually a term referring to British people (in general), not just any sailor. Because British sailors were the first to drink lime, Americans started calling British sailors limeys. And overtime it became a term referring to all British people. Not all sailors, but all British people (mostly English).
+nekocekoBiH Blimey. I'd never have thought.

Kinda proud when I hear about something hungarian related while watching my fav channels :) Keep up, greetings from Hungary!
Who else cringed when he stepped into the water with his shoes on and everything
When he sat on the edge and got doused.. Hope he didn't have his wallet on him...
...or his phone. (I *think* he'd take precautions, but...)
how many takes you think Kevin did? haha
and no flinching whatsoever.
I can't believe you stood in the water with your shoes on
I cringed hard when he did that!
Why does it matter lol.
That's not cringe worthy this is cringe worthy
Example of a cringe worthy individual: A fedora-wearing misanthrope who
also happens to enjoy My Little Pony and always complains about being
"forever alone". Sometimes, he carries fake swords and attaches fake
furry tails to his pants and walks around in public pretending he is not
human. Please use the word appropriately.
dude same!! no one likes wet socks
means their "cage" is small
Thumbmail got censored. :D
Edit: Great video Vsauce :) I guess that some ppl just did not like those teeth. :)
I didn't even find it disturbing
yeah I dont know why XD it was the full pic yesterday.
Saw it, RUclips is becoming too much of a prude.
But was it YT or Vsauce?
I don't think it was censored, I think he added that bar to make it more clickbaity.
The best channel on RUclips by far. Love it!
And still many religious people are in a cage from the past, and doing it willingly....
Just food for thought, perhaps they see you the same way. Though i do agree.
Right?
that's edgy, got anything else you learned from richard dawkins?
Im Human After All I think of that all of my own. Sorry it offends you. I guess you're religious ha?
Goodness can we not bring religious arguments into non religion based videos
I'm hungarian and it's really funny how he pronounces Szent-Györgyi Albert's name, it made me smile every time, but nevermind, that's not the point of the video.
I smiled every time too. I t was really funny. :D
MÉRT VAN ILYEN SOK MAGYAR AZ INTERNETEN?
Yeah it's funny but you can't blame him, the "gy" sound doesn't exist in English and is really hard to master by non-native speakers. In fact it might be only used in Hungarian as "similar" sounds in other languages I heard are quite different to my ears. I understand that some obscure Asian or African languages might use it but I have no way to verify this.
Jon W explains it very well, but I suggest to use google translate, type the name, set it to hungarian then click on the little speaker icon.
Also, with a little research, I'm pretty sure everyone can find lecturing videos about the hungarian alphabet.
I'm a hungarian too. I'm hungry all the time.
love how the boats drifts at 0:17 and then later at 0:49 you used the rope of the boat to prevent that... So subtle :D
edit: i changed it, thank you!
do you mean subtle? XD I think you mean subtle.
let's cubtle
You're a bad person. I just felt you should know that.

We've got scurvy, we need some Vitamin C!
We've got scurvy, we need a lemon tree!
Hands down,
This is the best Vsauce2 video yet, and my new favorite.
always so well made
I see crispr as the golden ticket that is just outside the cage ready for someone to grab it...
What is that? lol
The times we live in are absolutely incredible.

p.s: It's still bad
why da hell is this in my recommended videos...
Koko you really know nothing about the algorithms do you? lol
You know that those algorithms are badly flawed, susceptible to dishonest tagging and frequently overridden by _other_ algorithms trying to expand overall viewer base and clickthrough rates, right?
Nothing very wrong with this vid - apart from the stomach-churning thumbnail - but it has no place whatever in my recommended videos either.

>badly flawed
double negative much? idk
i think he was trying to make a joke
maybe they're promoting lemons these days.
Be honest, you were waiting for the water to tip out of the pool.
Awesome Kevin! You are awesome, I love your work! You motivate me
Btw, the nostalgia of that outro😢
I see that you have been taking over Vsauce 1's mojo.
Thank you.
Ever since youtube red took over I've been without these kinds of inspired videos.
Thank you.
that's why conformity is death
True
Unfortunately non-conformity is also death.
David Daivdson You seem to be in a very small cage.
Like everything, you need to maintain a healthy balance: not too much, not too little.
honestly, everything is death. death via old age haunts over us all, none can escape from it (until scientists possibly prevent it, idk.)
Makes you wonder what else we have forgotten over the years.

***** I searched it, wow thats pretty interesting.
I love how such a deep and contemplative video was presented by a man in a kiddy pool xD Great job Kevin.
this is the reason people would suck on limes.
For some reason doctors don't think it exists anymore even though there are people dying from it.
holy shiet i didnt think id ever find another person who has ehlers danlos syndrome
i have a different type though, and mine was diagnosed when i was 11 but it was already too late for me, im in a wheelchair atm because my knees hurt too much for me to be able to walk

The cage we are all in is our time. So true.
Not only restrict ourselves from questioning things but the problem is when we restrict ourselves from arguing such questions and answers.
Usually both sides are wrong about any argument, to solve it we need a consensus between both the wrong and right aspects for both sides of an argument.
Ender Skies
The world ain't black and white, buddy. The side of "science" only has credibility in the present.
right idea, horrible examples. all your examples have already been answered.
some people want to move that cage, somewhere where hard science is problematic, post modernism, we must forbid this to happened
Did he censure the original thumbnai or is it just me?
I think he did
He did. I personally like that as I keep getting it in my recommendations and it really bothered me.
Am i the only one whodidnt mind the yellow teeth?
He didnt censure it but he did censor it
Nice spelling
This channel has such a high quality content, thank you so much for your work, I love it.

Rose hip ? Wtf is that and why does it have so much vitamin c
(fruit list provided by Wikipedia)
One of the puropses of a fruit is to protect the genetic information it contains in its seeds.
The people are flawed, not the method.
+Aetrion
People make the methods
Jordan L But people don't make reality, and reality is what allows you to demonstrate the truth of something.
Aetrion
So the fact that things exist is the problem here?
So say you want to mow your lawn. You could use a mower, but instead you have someone cover the entire thing in napalm and drop a match.
The grass is shorter now, but the fact that one method killed everything is really just the garden's fault for existing.
I just wanna say thank you for editing the thumbnail. it's really appreciated!

Interstellar Melodies ooooooooh
I didn't even think of that
I keep coming back to this video... It's a masterpiece and my favorite video of yours thus far.
During the whole video I could only think "how is he going to get out of the pool without getting wet?". It was bothering me
What was the first guy ,who used his own piss to clean his teeth, thinking?
Probably something along the lines of "why not?"
They probably peed on a rock or wall and saw that it sort of cleaned it then thought that the same thing would work with their teeth
Was probably discovered by accident, imagine someone accidentally dropping something into a urine pot, only to find it later, but clean.
It was an old time , Kevin said it himself that urine was believed for a tooth care remedy
+DyslexicGamer good thinking
Jesus, how many times am I going to be recommended this video!
Jake builds a spaceship. Kevin sits in a kiddie pool. Michael stands in room. Apparently production values are inversely proportional to vsauce number.
"Gördzsi" 🤣 i dont blame you for saying it that way
Thank you for information, looks like my father suffering from this disease and doctors never told about this disease to him they just said it is iron that is coloring his legs skin, he have very dark leg skin. This video might saved my fathers life.
A gallon of beer a day?!?!?!
maybe beer wasn't as strong back then.
They had to drink alcohol because water would become stagnant or infected when stored for an extended period of time. Essentially beer was their water.
Anthony Khodanian Yeah, I've heard that.
Must have contained low alcohol then right?
Anthony LaFlare I can't claim to be much of a beer drinker. But the typical "bottle" of modern day beer is 12 oz. So a gallon would be 10 and 2/3 bottles. I imagine someone could drink that much in a 16 hour day and not be stumbling drunk, no?
This was an AMAZING episode Kevin !!! Thank you !!
