An honor to participate alongside these awesome people. Also, before he said the three grains of rice were rice I thought they were hamster droppings after feeding hamsters food coloring.
I'm calling bullcrap on this video. If you take the time to watch this and accept it as if it is certainly true then you are admitting that nothing you do and say and think is anything but just an imitation of what you hear and have learned from only the people that you've been subjected to having met or heard your entire life and that it is inevitable that we will always encounter struggles amongst our peers only to have a primitive desire to want to take our pains out on them or even potentially harmless beings or individuals. Sure it all makes sense but how does that take in to account being actively critical of everything anyone says with the assumption that none of us have the means to knowing everything about what is "objectively" right and that discussion and thought can lead to new waves of cultures and new means of solving issues? It is in my opinion that this video could be potentially harmful for an audience member that has no desire of learning why people have any negative views on potentially dangerous or selfish people, groups, or ideologies and instead of wanting to try and help solve issues to make things better for everyone will merely shrug it off as nonsense and will ultimately leave themselves out from being able to grow and communicate for a productive cause for all.
He never claimed we couldn't have original ideas, and said that the scapegoat mechanism could be quelled by learning about it and using reason. Our thoughts are certainly shaped by what we absorb, but as conscious beings, we hold control over our minds. Also, one comment was enough
Great video! I never thought about scapegoats this way before. Thanks for inspiring me to keep experimenting with how I make videos to satisfy my mimetic desire
What I really like about that video is that Kevin is looking up to the camera, looking up to us. Ties perfectly with the video, and that idea of integrating camera tricks into the idea of the video is something Vsauce is doing quite a lot.
What I really like about this video is that Kevin purposefully decided to leave out the most important part about Girard's entire work although Girard spent the majority of his life writing on it. It's really odd.
@Jesus -_____- Not the official obviously, but yeah I absolutely love this band and have had that as my profile picture for like a decade now it feels like.

You may or may not have noticed, but the camera angle changed the entire feel of this video. The psychology behind putting yourself lower than someone else in physical space, adds a notion of empowerment to the person you are doing it to, because of this, I personally felt, kinda reassured or comforted by the conclusion rather than feeling small.
These V-Sauce video essay presentations are absolutely dazzling to me. They present an idea, explore it, come to the morbid existential conclusion of the idea, then, rather than leaving their viewer on that solemn note they turn it around to the optimistic side of the topic. All of you guys who dedicate your lives, money, and passion to these projects are amazing people.
Just a small point on Meltzoff's hypothesis; young children don't have a sense of 'object permanence' so when a mother closes her eyes, to a child (under 2 or so) the eyes just aren't there from the child's point of view. At that age, a child has no theory of mind, and cannot place any kind of association between what happens when they close their eyes and when the someone else does so. They do react differently when the mothers eyes are open, but this is due to an instinct to pay attention to a mothers eyes when they are there from the child point of view, not some understanding of a mothers intentions or experience. This is why young children can play peekaboo for what seems like forever. They are consistently surprised when you reappear out of what to them seems like nowhere. Also, the idea of desire not being innate, but an external force that can cause conflict was perfectly extolled in the 1984 movie The Gods must be Crazy.
Well noone is ever completely correct about anything to their ending point. We are humans; unique creatures, not perfect. There can always be something added, seen from a different perspective, done differently, and so on. At least they added that statement/idea to begin with.
Don't act like you're the «special snowflake» that's smarter than everyone else. Everyone blames people unreasonably, often subconsciously, so shut ya' mouth, m8
yes they are, the word meme was created with the meaning and explaining this same exact human behaviour and how we copy from other creatures/people. Sorry for the bad explanation for more info on what i am talking about read the book ''THE SELFISH GENE'' from Richard Dawkins
I am 100% a scapegoat. i learned that i was a scapegoat while isolated in a rehab facility for months with nothing else to do but read the same two books over and over. i read a book that stated something about scapegoats and it really spoke to me in a way i cant even describe. (i would have definitely lost my mind if i didn't have books to read while in rehab while isolated for so long from the rest of the world). i don't know how i did it, but i turned myself into a scapegoat by my own bad choices, and my family started blaming me for everything, friends stopped talking to me completely. kicked out of my house several times, even kicked myself out several times. and then one day i just decided to leave my family and friends and live the street life for a bit. banished myself in a way i guess. and i seen that my leaving, well, it united them. they seem so happy without me now, so i'm happy for them now. but, now i'm ALONE. x'D i am a disappointment to my family, and myself. now i just sit kinda .. sit here, mind and body wasting away, watching the sun burn and the clouds pass. i'm 19 years old and i feel like i'm 90 because of the path i took in life. tho, i'm still alive so i cant complain. anyway nobody is gonna read this. just decided to leave a bit of myself here. bye~ keep on keeping on internet people. ~
I read it. Can't say our paths look anything alike, but our endpoints are kind of similar. Also, I watched some of your videos. If that's you in them, it looks like you have some musical talent that I hope you're putting to good use. In any case, I wish you well!

This is by far my favourite video on RUclips. Ever since I saw it for the 1st time I keep seeing the scapegoat mechanism in places I never thought about. It made me realise how much I don't know about human behaviour and how much everyone, no matter how different, is the same. Can't wait to view it again in a couple of months 👏🏼👏🏼

This video is a masterpiece! I was blown away by Michael a few years ago, Jake got me last year. But this is how you won my respect as a creator Kevin!
I've seen this many times in different social environments but never really understood it. My hypothesis was individuals with 'weaker' personalities mimicking the traits of more popular, dominant and charismatic members of the group to compensate for their lower position, and try to enhance their position in their social group. I've witnessed it in pairs of newly acquainted friends also, where one seems to slowly transform into the other. I find it fascinating but equally disturbing, and I'm convinced there is a correlation between this transformation of the self and having weak personality or little independence, as well as a desire for acceptance in a wider societal theatre, suggesting possible issues regarding anxiety/depression. This video makes so much sense, great watch.
It isn't elegant or well-thought out since he chose to omit the most important part of Girard's work. Do your own research and find out. This guys is a Charlatan
This is the reason, why i watch V Sauce. These type of videos made from Jake, Kevin and Michael plus friends. Where at the end i always feel like, not only i learned something, but also their videos touched my heart in a way, so that i want to be a better human beeing. For this video and as always thanks for beeing awsome
Clicks on video... thinks it's title is "spacegoat" Here's Kevin talk about being like a muscular, sexy, strong, man Checks title again Questions my existence
I think I was going to type Thinks it's titled "spacegoat" but got distracted and changed what I was going to say without rereading what I had just typed
I love watching videos and reading articles that make me think, especially in ways I never have before. This is one of those videos so thank you for making it. The more useful the information we absorb, the easier it is to critically think.
Normies are simply not aware of the memes when performing them. Kekistanis are, but may lose the scope of what memes really are at that fundamental level.
Not sure where you get your definition from but in memetics a meme is usually described as a self replicating idea/ unit of culture whereas mimetics refer to the philosophical concept of imitation. If you want you can read up on memetics and where the term comes from on wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memetics If you are interested in the difference to Mimetics you can read the wikipedia article on mimesis as well: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimesis And I realize that memetics and mimetics are closely related as memes rely on imitation, but they are definetely not the same.
You know Michael and Jake were my first favorites but these kind of videos tickle my fancy so much and make you more and more my favorite. Thanks Kevin.
I love that so much of the end of this video was dedicated to so many creators who inspire us acknowledging those who inspired them. We really do stand on the shoulders of giants. 💜
I love thinking about this concept of mimetic existence whenever I have to acknowledge sources of information. I always would wonder about writing a bibliography for a paper, or even something as unofficial as starting a sentence by disclaiming that you're about to relay information that you didn't experience first-hand. So much of how we learn and even the core of our ability to communicate comes from mimicking that we reach a point where we must walk a line between mimic and copy-paste, and I've always been interested in the gray area surrounding that line.
This is really informative to me in an unintentional way, as I have Autism and now I have a better understanding of the fact that most people want to be "cool". I never wanted that. Great video.
This channel is so goddam awesome! If you're reading this Kevin, I wish you the best of luck in your continued video-building adventures. (Also, what is the name of that song just before the Who inspired you- segment?)
Tuukka Utriainen some step out because they have no other choice like the guy in the video that got exiled.i dont see why you cant do it yourself though
Gods a meme. Culture is a meme. Cultures change, theres always an earlier religion. Humans were sacrificed, then goats in the bible. You know because it opens saying not to sacrifice humans anymore. Stories are memes, they change over time like chinese whispers or the telephone game. Before the flood was the epic of gilgamesh's flood, contradictory yet nearly copied word for word for a significant portion of it. And even the epic of gilgamesh was not unique, and neither the one before that. Humanity started sacrifice after farming and sedentary lifestyle, which is when they developed dogma. Religion's core is violence.
Especially since Kevin, in his amazing way, decided to leave out the most important part of Girard's work in a really intellectually dishonest way. So amazing!! Go Kevin!
I think there is one major flaw in Rene Girard's theory.. Yes, it is true that we gain almost all of our desires by seeing and imitating others. But we see many more people than we imitate. What determines who we decide to subconsciously imitate?
4xdblack I would say those we understand better and deal with more personally. Parents, close friends, spouse. Then your average friend, coworker, and boss. It could explain how over time close friends will develop a similar laugh pattern when together, but with another friend you may have a different laugh, or another laugh when in public. I know when I'm laughing I sometimes realize as I'm laughing that it's not the same as with other people.
MinecraftTestSquad that's a reasonable answer. Though that isn't necessarily always the case. Think of celebrities, such as Nicola Tesla, George R.R. Martin, or Adele. How many people have they inspired without ever directly affecting the lives of those people. Also, on the point of how friends develop similar laugh patterns.. I think that has less to do with a model/desire formula, and more along the lines of social conformity and acceptance. A subconscious effort to be more accepted by others by mirroring their actions.
I think that we are imitating people unconsciously only when we are young and didnt completely develop our personality, but after that we start imitating consciously by choice, i as for the affects of friends and who you deal with everyday i dont know how that apply, i do notice specially in the past year how my friends changed me and affected my behavior in public
Best video on the internet. Amazing video!! I just started my youtube channel yesterday. Finding role models and things that inspire and motivate me is the most important thing and gives me hope that I am not just a passive observer as my life winds down one day at a time.
I really appreciate this, I know that a lot of people are upset that "Vsauce" is no longer "Vsauce" but you are really well spoken and you do these videos as well as anyone could, keep going, you're amazing
But... how the hell can we stop the scapegoat effect? How can we stop violence, without choosing a scapegoat? This effect can be seen like... everywhere, and it's kinda sad... Can we do something about it?
My guess is that the scapegoat sacrifice shouldn't just be something random but the cause, or even deeper the root cause, needs to be found. If it's humans then the root of all of us is our DNA.
SkyBeast MC we have already made a huge progress in decreasing it with knowledge.we just need to spread this knowledge.people will open their minds and think on their own
Marsman The root cause may be for example a fight for a girlfriend. In this case, I have no idea how to act. Choosing a scapegoat will solve the problem, but we want to avoid it, so... what to do? I did not understand the link between scapegoat and DNA though.
SkyBeast MC I was thinking on a larger scale, such as nations, or crime, or politics or what-have-you. I was getting at what makes us up, e.g. our personality and how we behave, is controlled for the most part by our DNA that is passed onto us by our mother and father. I've been thinking on the large scale for so long that I was forgetting about the small (personal) things. Sorry bout misunderstanding your original question.
That add at the end pissed me off. I understand you need to support the work. It was hammered in after some almost genuine experiences. Really undermined the whole ending.
Well shit, this explains why i have no motivation to obtain desires, I don't have any aspirations to imitate anyone. I have no role models, or people i look up to anymore.
Passed out couch Potatos Do you really dont want to become rich? Dont want to be happy? Dont want to end the suffering of others? You are influenced by role models all the time, and it's not a bad thing.
perhaps, but i have yet to find one that inspires me, I normally just chock things up as useful information, or something i now understand, but i have no motivation to pursue any of those things sadly.
Passed out couch Potatos being a social person I believe helps push you towards wanting to aspire to things. I've been on both sides where I'm very social and have lots of friends to where I don't hang out with anyone or interact with anyone, and in my personal experience, it was much easier to be motivated to achieve something when there are a lot of people involved in your life.
"take a deep breath, tell yourself that you can only do your best, and worst-case scenario; you fail and your journey takes a little longer, Well I think the journey is the best bit. stay calm, do what you can, and you will be fine". (good luck with the test)
This is one of my favourite videos to come from vsauce, I think about it every day! I feel as though I can finally understand bits about evolutionary psychology I couldn't grasp before.
"engrained into you" I see what you did there 😏. in all seriousness, this is an excellent video and scapegoating is currently happening to a certain Arabic country...
Or a certain kind of refugees. Seriously tho can they stop making it worse for themselves by declaring war on the west and bombing it jesus christ do you want our healthcare or not?
that random spanner that likes cheese Because every refugee is an extremist, yup totally, every refugee is an ISIS supporter Sure the cultural differences are large especially when it comes to things like misogyny, gays, the separation of church and state, freedom of speech... That culture does not define people, it does influence them though (I'm not saying everyone who lives there believes in all these things, I'm just saying people there are more likely to do so than people in the West), but if a proper system is used for integration then people could adapt
An honor to participate alongside these awesome people. Also, before he said the three grains of rice were rice I thought they were hamster droppings after feeding hamsters food coloring.
Thanks for being involved! The hamster droppings video sounds like a good one. I'll have to contemplate that.

Maybe you should keep reading Girard and find out how hard it hits home (and how Kevin forgot the most crucial part of his work)
"I am alone and I am everyone."
Damn, this is pwoerful!
I cherish each time any of the vsauces upload because you never know the next time they’ll upload again.
Nice video. See you next century.
Good one
Red Salmon explain the joke
They don't upload very often.
Yahya Fihel thx
It's worth the wait tho
Beautiful...another elegantly arranged and well-thought-out work of philosophy.
Johnny Garcia with some lies here and there
Mork 666 wot
Suani Avila agreed
It isn't elegant or well-thought out since he chose to omit the most important part of Girard's work. Do your own research and find out. This guys is a Charlatan
This is the reason, why i watch V Sauce. These type of videos made from Jake, Kevin and Michael plus friends. Where at the end i always feel like, not only i learned something, but also their videos touched my heart in a way, so that i want to be a better human beeing. For this video and as always thanks for beeing awsome
0:17 "you'll be the green rice" *WAIT NO I WANNA BE THE BLUE RICE*
Adele Hare Wha?
You are the blue rice to someone else
😆
Then you are...
YO MOM
making this video must have been very painful for your neck
is the looking up symbolical or did the tripod
just get stuck?
Clicks on video... thinks it's title is "spacegoat"
Here's Kevin talk about being like a muscular, sexy, strong, man
Checks title again
Questions my existence
I misread the title too.
Oh I read it as spacegoats and then after the video ended read this comment
jollow250 Yup.
I also read it as spacegoat
I think I was going to type Thinks it's titled "spacegoat"
but got distracted and changed what I was going to say without rereading what I had just typed
great video in a time of intolerance, when scapegoats are created to diverse us from the tensions inside our own socioeconomic system.
"They aren't everyone. You are everyone." Kevin 2017
I love watching videos and reading articles that make me think, especially in ways I never have before. This is one of those videos so thank you for making it. The more useful the information we absorb, the easier it is to critically think.
so the first thing we ever do after we're born is try to spread a meme?
So there are no normies?
*my life is a lie*
Normies are simply not aware of the memes when performing them. Kekistanis are, but may lose the scope of what memes really are at that fundamental level.
mimetics != memetics
*meme* _(noun)_ an element of a culture or system of behaviour passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means.
Not sure where you get your definition from but in memetics a meme is usually described as a self replicating idea/ unit of culture whereas mimetics refer to the philosophical concept of imitation.
If you want you can read up on memetics and where the term comes from on wikipedia:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memetics
If you are interested in the difference to Mimetics you can read the wikipedia article on mimesis as well:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimesis
And I realize that memetics and mimetics are closely related as memes rely on imitation, but they are definetely not the same.
Ty for making Vsauce1 content for us while Michael left us. Love this and keep it up!
so basically, you, are a mix of everything you know, that's poetic.
ok....
Notumengi
Everything is a remix
I just realized that kung fu panda 2 or 3 tried to teach the same thing
it's just logical. New information can't be createed from nothing, it always just transforms.
Watching my kids learn something new is the best feeling in the world. This explains a lot.
You know Michael and Jake were my first favorites but these kind of videos tickle my fancy so much and make you more and more my favorite. Thanks Kevin.
The "Who Inspired You?" segment surely was a pleasant surprise
I need you to make a vid on how that knife lifted the jar of rice
go and study some basic science .
vsauce has an strategy in their speech to keep you hooked. a pretty good one.
5 years later and I can point to this video as one of the most perspective-changing things I've ever seen. I think about it a lot.
I love that so much of the end of this video was dedicated to so many creators who inspire us acknowledging those who inspired them. We really do stand on the shoulders of giants. 💜
Dang. What an emotional rollercoaster.
This video touched me
TheOneBoQuA An old man touched me

10:30 “enGRAINED in you” I see what you did there
I love thinking about this concept of mimetic existence whenever I have to acknowledge sources of information.
Dong, then Vsauce2, does this mean a Vsauce upload soon??!?!
We can only hope
Maxx Bailey Also VSauce 3
Yes
isn't VS1 still out traveling with Adam Savage?
No, he's working on a new video. He tweeted yesterday about interviewing some people for his new video i believe, so it's coming.
This channel is so goddam awesome! If you're reading this Kevin, I wish you the best of luck in your continued video-building adventures. (Also, what is the name of that song just before the Who inspired you- segment?)
Hugo Nelsson even with the lies?
Wonderfully thoughtful video. I hope that many people think on it.
Everytime he ends a video IT GIVES ME GOOSEBUMPS IT'S SUCH AN INCREDIBLE ENDING EVERY SINGLE TIME!!!
Very good video, this does a great job at explaining tensions between groups of people today.
So how can one even step out of the crowd? Is it even possible since we get affected by everyone?
btw gotta say this was a really interesting video and topic!
Tuukka Utriainen some step out because they have no other choice like the guy in the video that got exiled.i dont see why you cant do it yourself though
if too many people step out it is not
called stepping out, its a crowd shuffling to the left!
Tuukka Utriainen don't step out of the crowd, curate it, control it
Gods a meme.
Oh wow... just wow... this triggered a whole new level of philosophic thinking in me... you never seize to amaze me Kevin... Amazing video
A subconscious effort to be more accepted by others by mirroring their actions.
those who are the most successful at climbing the dominance hierarchy
I think that we are imitating people unconsciously only when we are young and didnt completely develop our personality, but after that we start imitating consciously by choice, i as for the affects of friends and who you deal with everyday i dont know how that apply, i do notice specially in the past year how my friends changed me and affected my behavior in public
I think we do subconsciously imitate everyone, to extent.
Always love the way you pace your videos/script/delivery.
Every so often there's a video on RUclips that really just hits you and does something to you, and this was one of those. Thank you
I misread the title at first. I was so confused, wondering when he'd get to the space goats already.
This is for me the best video on all the vsauce channels !!!
eliouz but it failed to tell the truth on the Salem trials...look it up on your own!!
So much knowledge flowing into mah head
Best video on the internet. Amazing video!! I just started my youtube channel yesterday. Finding role models and things that inspire and motivate me is the most important thing and gives me hope that I am not just a passive observer as my life winds down one day at a time.
this is the only video on youtube i have watched over a thousand times.. love it!
Very thought provoking.
0:18 That's not red rice, that's the red pill that we desire.
[truth bombing intensifies]
6:33 she's winding up to dab on the whole courthouse.
You killed me with that. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
I really appreciate this, I know that a lot of people are upset that "Vsauce" is no longer "Vsauce" but you are really well spoken and you do these videos as well as anyone could, keep going, you're amazing
Awesome video! I begin to like Kevin's videos more and more
this video is pretty amazing holy fuck
But... how the hell can we stop the scapegoat effect? How can we stop violence, without choosing a scapegoat?
This effect can be seen like... everywhere, and it's kinda sad... Can we do something about it?
My guess is that the scapegoat sacrifice shouldn't just be something random but the cause, or even deeper the root cause, needs to be found. If it's humans then the root of all of us is our DNA.
SkyBeast MC we have already made a huge progress in decreasing it with knowledge.we just need to spread this knowledge.people will open their minds and think on their own
Marsman
The root cause may be for example a fight for a girlfriend. In this case, I have no idea how to act.
Choosing a scapegoat will solve the problem, but we want to avoid it, so... what to do?
I did not understand the link between scapegoat and DNA though.
im commenting because im interested in the answer
SkyBeast MC
I was thinking on a larger scale, such as nations, or crime, or politics or what-have-you. I was getting at what makes us up, e.g. our personality and how we behave, is controlled for the most part by our DNA that is passed onto us by our mother and father. I've been thinking on the large scale for so long that I was forgetting about the small (personal) things. Sorry bout misunderstanding your original question.
Vsause2 looks like Jesse from breaking bad in his new channel pic
Like for real
Utility is what inspires my desires, I think I learned it from my Brother. The last six minutes on this video was great.
Tommero I don't think its a bad thing, and I understand why someone would have those sorts of things but I have no goals for anything that you named
Passed out couch Potatos Your role model doesn't have to be a human. It could be a movie or something
perhaps, but i have yet to find one that inspires me, I normally just chock things up as useful information, or something i now understand, but i have no motivation to pursue any of those things sadly.
Passed out couch Potatos being a social person I believe helps push you towards wanting to aspire to things. I've been on both sides where I'm very social and have lots of friends to where I don't hang out with anyone or interact with anyone, and in my personal experience, it was much easier to be motivated to achieve something when there are a lot of people involved in your life.
when you're on RUclips 24/7 so you don't need notifications
When you do the same even though you have a very important test tomorrow you didn't learn for yet.
"take a deep breath, tell yourself that you
can only do your best, and worst-case scenario; you fail and your journey takes
a little longer, Well I think the journey is the best bit. stay calm, do what
you can, and you will be fine". (good luck with the test)

Still, thank you :)
oh..., well..., erm..., print out my comment and on

I will xD
I was a scapegoat. I'm goat that just escaped my farm.
I rewatch this video once in a while, to me at least this is one of the best pieces of culture ever made.
@@sussusamogus9596 You ate blinded by the culture you grew up in and didn't choose, I say you should start to think authentically.
Ahmad Almubarak scapegoating*
Or a certain kind of refugees.
Seriously tho can they stop making it worse for themselves by declaring war on the west and bombing it jesus christ do you want our healthcare or not?
that random spanner that likes cheese Question: Have you ever heard of the term "False Flag"? Try not believing liars.
that random spanner that likes cheese
Because every refugee is an extremist, yup totally, every refugee is an ISIS supporter
Sure the cultural differences are large especially when it comes to things like misogyny, gays, the separation of church and state, freedom of speech...
That culture does not define people, it does influence them though (I'm not saying everyone who lives there believes in all these things, I'm just saying people there are more likely to do so than people in the West), but if a proper system is used for integration then people could adapt
"I was made fun of... so that many others can rejoice"
please read that in a brooding soft voice thanks
how's the song starting at 9:50, called?

Rick Ashley - never gonna give you up.
this joke is way too good.
Cornul11 I think it's keith by jake chudnow, though I may be wrong.
It sounds similar, but it's not exactly the same song unfortunately :(. Most likely this song is not public.
I think this is the best video of yours that I’ve seen so far.
This was the most powerful and compelling thing I have ever seen.
