My mother is currently sifting through old photographs. She lost her father (my grandfather) around dinner time yesterday due to a heart attack. Now comes the time for her, where she can no longer _know who he is,_ but instead simply _remember who he was._
+Daniel Renard Sorry for your and your mother's loss, Danel -- all those old photographs and documents, and forcing us to remember what we can, is an amazing opportunity to think about a life and how who someone was transfers into who the next generation is.
Matthew Tabor Thanks. It may sound cold of me, but I was personally never all that close to him, nor were my two sisters. It of course saddens me to know a family member has passed away and I do support my mother who was of course, very close to her father. My grandfather just had ideals that were incompatible with the times of my youth. For example, he was greatly disappointed in me, even as a pre-teen, for not knowing how to fix a flat bike tire; I either had my parents tell me they would do it for me and bike wheels in general, were built sturdier back then, than they were in the 1940's/50's when he was a kid, so there was no need for me to having learned that at such an age. I DO know how to fix one, today at least. He and his wife _(not my grandmother)_ nearly never invited family over and often declined invitations. The invitations he did accept, he would just sit in a corner with his wife, smoke cigarettes and drink to the point where drunken arguments would ensue with other relatives and/or their loved ones, until they would finally be kicked out and sent home, so... nope. Wasn't all that close. My fondest and probably only positive memory I have of him, is where he drew me a locomotive with a common blue ink pen, on a piece of graph paper, when I was a child _(I loved locomotives back then.)_ ...but he kept it. - Wait a minute... that memory *sucked* too! D:
+Daniel Renard I wish there could be a form to record my life from MY perspective so that people not only remember me from their eyes, but also from mine, they'd know then who I really was
"Gather round everyone. A carrier pigeon just arrived with a rather funny image of a man looking toward a woman walking away while another woman looks at him angrily. The woman walking away's face says "free market capitalism" and the angry woman's face says "Marxism". I shall compose a telegram reply to tell Abraham how funny this image is: L. O. L. STOP..."
+MEGAF00T Some people lick butts, or stick everything they can find in them. Why do you think its weird for a dog to sniff some? It *is* weird being human
It's not that a person is small, it's that the world is so big that the person is small by comparison. The Earth holds every city and mountain we have climbed, every great book and painting. Jupiter could fit over 1000 earths. Does that make earth small?
+Goldec HD On the contrary, these videos make me feel empowered and human by the end of them. You, yourself, probably feel small because you're in a world that is vast and seemingly unending. Take pride in feeling small, because even the smallest things can make the biggest differences.
I don't know why, but this episode made me really happy. Maybe it's the realization that we're not so different even across eons of time, or that we all want to be remembered in some way, and that unites us. Either way, puts a smile on my face.
+Pokerface It's pretty interesting that humanity largely has a core tendency to do the same things, just a little differently and a little better as time passes. IMO, that's what makes the societies that *don't* do something so interesting.
man this video kind of made me sad. Like knowing no one will care about your death unless you did something incredible and never done before, and even then, you will be mentioned as a ''name'' rather than a person. But hey we didn't cry when our ancestors died as of today because they died of an arrow to the face, a sword in the stomach, a stone against your temple or drowned. Come to think of it: many people died, and we know not even half of their names.
+AngryDemonBowser According to a 2013 study, the average American knows about 600 people. Of course, this number will surely increase as we become ever more connected through various social media platforms. Comparatively, approximately 106 billion people have ever existed. About 7 billion people are currently alive. Given those numbers, any given individual only knows 5.66x10^-7% of the entire historical, global population. An equally crazy thought is how many people never had a chance to be known. According to UN statistics, the current global infant mortality rate is 49.4 deaths per 1000 births. I couldn't find exact statistics on global infant mortality rates a century ago, but rates in some cities were around 30%. Just 100 years ago, 30% of all people born were likely to die before they had a chance to be "known." It's kind of daunting--how few people we know on the grand scale of thing. Perhaps it doesn't matter. What is the difference between having 1 friend and 1000 friend?. Happiness and fulfillment are all subjective. If it makes you feel any better, what does individual impact matter anyway on a universal scale? When the inevitable heat death of the universe occurs, there will be no one left to remember anyone, or anything for that matter.
It's is amazing to realize that everyone who has ever both lived and died are underneath us right now. We are only >1% of the entire human ancestry currently above ground.
I just realized that every single Vsauce video, wether it be 1 2 or 3 would be terrible if they didn't pick great music, do their research, and explain it in a way that everyone can understand. I'd never realized why I love Vsauce so much.
Supposedly we are making history in this comments section. Will future historians read this comment? Are you a historian from the future? Hello you. What year is it? Am I still alive?
+Andrew Brown Hi. It's still 2015 but 30 minutes or so from when you posted this. I assume you're still alive but have no real way of knowing. Not really a concern of mine anyway. +Andrew Brown Hello Andrew, I'm a historian from 2 hours in the future. I can still read your comment at 3:54am EST, 12 Dec 2015. If you can read mine reply to record that you're still in fact alive.
+Boggles I watched the whole thing waiting for him to show up, I had to search for him after that, and I only saw him for a split second with like other 10 people in the frame, am I missing something here? D:
Just imagine how many dead people are subscribed to your channel, i'm even sure the'll come a day where i'll be dead and still subscribed in this channel !
It's amazing to me how accurate it is too have immortality because of mummification and documentation. There are so many ancient societies that would have been lost to history without it, and it really gets you to wonder how much more amazing history there is that was either not documented, or if the documentation was destroyed.
+Peter Schmidt It's the same thing with inventions -- just think how many times a particular thing was discovered, like the proper ratio of copper and tin to make bronze, that was lost before it was recorded. That's part of discovery, really -- not only coming up with something, but recording that discovery in such a way as to allow others to remember and use it.
I wonder how many civilizations existed tht we don't know about because they didn't come up with mummification or just didn't have the means and technology available to preserve things...
I guess you could say... You just got saved. *YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH*
This is honestly one of the most interesting and thought provoking videos I've watched for some time, the outro music is really powerful and hits home, great video!
I figured out a long time ago that I will have no impact on the world, really. That my actions don't matter. And that living is NOT about being remembered, but experiencing the world while you can. Not caring if people know or care about you. Once I realized that, I was happy.
I'd add to that... I think it's about leaving things in a better state than how you found them. For the benefit of the next person. For the benefit of next generation. For the benefit of other species - animal, plant, for who and whatever. It's not about the value you can extract from your experiences on earth while you're alive... That's still - sadly - quite an inward and self-orientated perspective. Instead, shift your perspective around. You're not just you. You're part of a collective. I reckon it's about continually trying to leave something better than when you found it... both on a small, day-to-day basis and the biggie, how you leave things after you pop your clogs, kick the bucket, shuffle off this mortal coil, you know. Apply that to everything, everyone, the planet, where you live etc, and you'll be ok.
Life Expands. Really loved this comment. Would like to make a quote of part of it and share in my social media, can I? I can credit you if you want, just give me a name. (I'm in my boyfriend's account)
Hi there, of course you can quote which ever part you like. It's really nice that you agree with the sentiment - please do share. No need to credit me personally, I prefer anonymity in any case. You can credit my screen name if you like, but it doesn't matter (the screen name is part of a quote).
All those amazing videos we see everyday on youtube are just a fraction of what is possible in the world. Amazing feats have been done throughout history but only now are we able to display them for one another to see. Imagine if we had video recording 200 years ago, what a different world we'd be in.
Epic, brought a tear to my eye. That may seem strange to some, but this video really touched me. The human experience is hard to put into words because words are a part of that experience so can't describe it, just like the color of my shirt can't tell you what a shirt is. I don't know, but I really enjoyed this one, well done.
My friend passed not to long ago. In 2 days it'll be a month since hes passed. I put the only song he ever recorded on soundcloud for the purpose to make him immortal. Even after I pass, our friends pass or even his family he'll live forever through that song. Being able to be heard after years of being gone. The internet is a great place!
The fact that our mere existence probably changes the universe forever in some small way, and now we have this technology which makes those changes much more tangible, is incredible to me.
I recently learned about my Great-Great-Grandfather (Alf), and some of the things he did. I think it's really cool to learn about these things, remember them, and pass them on. In a way, it's like a little taste of immortality. I learned where he came from and things he did that cross over with my interests even now. All my life I've been fascinated by the story of RMS Titanic. I had (still have) a book about Dr Ballard's 1987 voyage to the wreck, and I had my nose in that regularly. Turns out, Great great grandfather Alf was on a ship crossing the Atlantic on that same night. Allegedly, due to radio range, his ship would have been the last ever to hear a radio call from Titanic. They altered course to join in the rescue, but RMS Carpathia got there first and told them they'd gotten all the survivors they could find. A few years later, Alf was in the Canadian Army as a medic, but his station got shelled by German artillery and mustard gas in the battle of Passchendale. He survived, but his injuries got him sent home. There, he helped organize and set up the Red Cross and St. John Ambulance in Eastern Canada. And a hundred years later, here's me.
I have always loved the music and the messages of Vsauce. They always leave pondering your life and future, as well as other peoples. I love these channels, and the people who help make them a reality. Thank you Vsauce 1-3, and continue your amazing work.
it's been a while since I've had a new favorite video-but this undoubtedly is a superior video worthy of accolades and esteem. the narrative was written so smoothly and the content so deliciously researched. I love this video. bravo!
WOW! Just wow!! Thanks a lot Kevin, for conveying this message so beautifully!!! Very clearly conveyed, and gives a new insight into who I WILL be, tomorrow, my legacy.
I really enjoyed this video! It's stuff like this I think about all the time and enjoy learning about. For Centuries, humans have been trying to record some type of record of themselves. Today, we have the technology to record mundane things , that back then no one even thought about. It really puts into perspective how much life has changed and evolved over the years.
So we've been recording our own voice, our own fashion sense, our own personality so that someday after our death, a man stumbles on our recordings and recognizes us just like the other 7 billion humans who are doing the same thing. And we've been doing this since the dawn of our existence. Humanity is so pathetic...
+Mayur Bharali Yep, they are -- and it's going to be interesting to see how historians use information on the internet as primary documents decades from now. Imagine all the content a historian would have to sift through... 100 years ago, it was just reading a diary or letters, maybe some photos and newspaper articles.
Kevin, I've been watching your videos for years. I wanted to say that: you've greatly developed into your own style in your videos. Good work. I can really see a progression of 'coming into your own' over these past years since this channel was started. And as always; thanks for reading.
This is the first one of your videos that I've watched. Showed up in my feed and gave it a push. Very well done. Kept me interested throughout. I am reminded of James Burke. I am recommending this.
at 7:32 the video said "In 1995, 16 million people were connected via the internet [2.7% world population] " Actually, 16 million out of the 5.7 Billion people in 1995 means that approximately 0.28% of the world population were connected to the internet in 1995, not 2.7%.
That last part is exactly the lore behind the Mexican day of the dead. Also, I'm going to start recording myself talking about things I'm interested in for my kids. My father was a singer and died suddenly 2 yrs ago. I have countless recordings of him singing and it makes me so happy to hear them. I want my kids to have something like that in case something happens to me.
This video made me realize and remember my fear of death and of how short our life on this world is. It's only hard to imagine what it could be like to live an eternity and live to tell the tale
This felt more like a Vsauce (1) video than Vsauce2. It was like Kev got up today and put on his big boy pants and had a great video going from fact to fact based on a theme (ilke Michael does) rather than an assortment of random cool things put together in a video. I approve :)

Probably because of the many things that one doesn't really know, just like we're just a mere speck in the vast universe and probably multiverse.

I'm not looking forward to my kids reading my tweets and looking at all my social media. :|
Then don't have kids.
+Little M - K Chan me too!
Just delete your old profile and make a new one?
+Jack Ripper You don't say???
We meet again...
I have always loved the music and the messages of Vsauce. They always leave pondering your life and future, as well as other peoples. I love these channels, and the people who help make them a reality. Thank you Vsauce 1-3, and continue your amazing work.

+TheGeckoNinja For me I think it's the other way around.
+That Kid KJ Thanks to hell we won't need to go to the internet? :P
+TheGeckoNinja Take that religion!
+TheGeckoNinja No, thanks to the internet we won't be forgotten, which means no Purgatory.
it's been a while since I've had a new favorite video-but this undoubtedly is a superior video worthy of accolades and esteem. the narrative was written so smoothly and the content so deliciously researched. I love this video. bravo!
Possibly the greatest vsauce I've ever seen
+AndreaMGC Thanks, Andrea -- definitely making sure Kevin sees your comment!
WOW! Just wow!! Thanks a lot Kevin, for conveying this message so beautifully!!! Very clearly conveyed, and gives a new insight into who I WILL be, tomorrow, my legacy.
Great video. Videos like this are what I subscribed for. :)
+Greg Weigner Thanks, Greg! Really glad to hear that you liked it -- these comments mean a lot more to Vsaucers than people realize.
A step up from the normal video, well done
Thanks Vsauce! You're always great for my morning feel-goods.
So we've been recording our own voice, our own fashion sense, our own personality so that someday after our death, a man stumbles on our recordings and recognizes us just like the other 7 billion humans who are doing the same thing.
And we've been doing this since the dawn of our existence.
Humanity is so pathetic...
When aliens are going to look on our past.
I hope they don't stumble into my search history...
The absolute BEST episode of any Vsauce channel i have seen yet!!! Thank you! It was amazing!

my comments are being recorded
+Mayur Bharali #worldunderwatchNSA2K15
+Mayur Bharali Yep, they are -- and it's going to be interesting to see how historians use information on the internet as primary documents decades from now. Imagine all the content a historian would have to sift through... 100 years ago, it was just reading a diary or letters, maybe some photos and newspaper articles.
+Matthew Tabor A LOT of pointless rubbish
+21st Century Just like this
+21st Century Or this
I love how you and everyone on vsauce manage to keep me interested and entertained when I'm watching your videos, thank you!
Brilliant, thank you!
Subscribing.

"We may have eliminated the land of no return, without realizing it."
That was deep.

The Giza pyramid isn't a tomb, the pharaoh's were buried in the valley of kings.
I hope "Hellabytes" becomes a thing
Awesome work Kevin! And all the other people and teams behind this video! Keep the knowledge and information coming!
Peace!
Awesome video!
It's 0.27% and not 2.7% for the 1995 figure.
+kakuka25 Yep, that was a typo -- correction has been added to the video description!
Kevin, I've been watching your videos for years. I wanted to say that: you've greatly developed into your own style in your videos. Good work. I can really see a progression of 'coming into your own' over these past years since this channel was started.
And as always; thanks for reading.
are you Frankie Muniz?
+baums5808 That's Thoughty2
His name is Kevin Leiber
xEl Gringo Loco wow!
This is the first one of your videos that I've watched. Showed up in my feed and gave it a push.
Very well done. Kept me interested throughout. I am reminded of James Burke. I am recommending this.
Pristine content!!
Henry Lehtovirta I agree, 2 year old commenter.
Thank you for making this video. I loved it.
at 7:32 the video said
"In 1995, 16 million people were connected via the internet [2.7% world population] "
Actually, 16 million out of the 5.7 Billion people in 1995 means that approximately 0.28% of the world population were connected to the internet in 1995, not 2.7%.
Maybe they meant 160 million?
VSAUCE!!!!! WHY MUST YOU ALWAYS BLOW MY MIND, MAKE ME FEEL SO SMALL, YET SO AMAZING IN JUST 12 MINUTES!!!!
I'm making history right now. 😉
+RGkong prove it ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
+ZiCell He just did... and so did I.... And you too!
Please more on form videos like this! So informative, I love it!
He looks a little bit like Jesse Pinkman from breaking bad
Pilot Winebrenner yeah he kinda does tbh
That last part is exactly the lore behind the Mexican day of the dead.
Also, I'm going to start recording myself talking about things I'm interested in for my kids. My father was a singer and died suddenly 2 yrs ago. I have countless recordings of him singing and it makes me so happy to hear them. I want my kids to have something like that in case something happens to me.
Someone from the very far future is reading this comment.
Utterly fantastic. I love the style of your videos and how informative they are!!
Subject was mildly interesting but the presentation was excellent! Very good narration and production. Grade A.
Thank you for your amazing work!
Well done Kevin to you and your team for crafting this awesome video!
The production quality has really improved on this channel. Kudos Vsauce2!
Brilliant! Thanks again for your amazing videos. I love the way you paint a story that includes the past, compared to the present :)
always wonderful to see something from you kevin!
love your more serious style, Kevin
really nice that you're renewing it
This video made me realize and remember my fear of death and of how short our life on this world is. It's only hard to imagine what it could be like to live an eternity and live to tell the tale
That was an amazing video. Really hit home.
love it when you do these deep ones Kevin. keep it up. great work.
Superb production, Kevin. My favorite so far.
And as always: thanks for making this video and recording yourself!
I'm doing a project on immortality, standing out in society and preserving our memory after death, this video will be a great help! Cheers Kevin
most incredible video i've ever watched !!!
I feel like V sauce videos are evolving with time just as my taste for videos and they are always something to look forward to.
This is a concept I want to see explored more on the public/social stage. Very interesting. Thank you.
This felt more like a Vsauce (1) video than Vsauce2. It was like Kev got up today and put on his big boy pants and had a great video going from fact to fact based on a theme (ilke Michael does) rather than an assortment of random cool things put together in a video. I approve :)
I like the way that you connect everything!
