    Maybe Charlie Brooker should write an episode about an arrogant, egocentric bully who does PR for a war criminal? But, and here is the funny bit, this known liar and bully is not arrested; he is not disgraced; he is not even criticised for his part in a travesty that has cost hundreds of thousands of lives. Instead, the guy is embraced and loved by the liberal glitterati and gets a job as an interviewer for a popular magazine

      I don't think it's helpful to scape-goat some PR man from the past for something entire governments were responsible for. Innocent people were being blown up in their homes in the middle east long before New Labour came along.

    interesting to hear brooker's method for getting to sleep. i use an similar method to quiet my mind to get through insomnia. i stick on something like a dawkins or hitchens interview and exactly as he says its just interesting and loud enough to vaguely hold my attention - but only just - and it quiets all the "paranoid thoughts" he talks about. recommend it highly. this interview will probably send me to sleep tonight - lower the volume, dim the screen and in under 10 mins i'll be out.

    ' nightshade' is a plant that grows wild in lots of the world. American pokeberry is a much bigger Bush than the English nightshade and the wild belladonna (which is pale lilac berry) which renaissance Italian ladies used to use to white their irises. The practice was discontinued about the same time as the lead face paint was dropped by clowns during the Victorian era,because it's poisonous.
    Anyway pokeberry was used during the American revolution against the English. The superstition is that the pokeberry occurs like Martin Luther's protestant uprising against paedophilia in the catholic church, since the English would not eat pokeberry letters, for fear of the poison.
    In english-germanic superstition nightshade is a bad little fairy who lures people into commiting suicide somewhere between 'Venus in furs' by lou reed and 'bring me to life' by Evanescence . People still do have badman contests with pokeberry sallet but I reckon blackcurrants are much yummier

    I loved that as well as being a loving parody of Star Trek, USS Callister had two particular Star Trek episodes at its core. Hollow Pursuits and Charlie X and managed to merge such completely different premises brilliantly. I just would like to know the answer to the question I was left with. Does Daly have any idea that the characters in his simulation have consciousness or feelings or does he believe they are just mindless simulations for him to interact with like NPCs in a video game? The answer to that determines how much sympathy I am supposed to feel for him.

    • @joech1065
      @joech1065 6 лет назад +1

      saxbend Considering that he tortured their children to force them into compliance, I would say that he us well aware that simulations are conscious. It would be an interesting Black Mirror episode though to explore people not realizing that simulations have consciousness or, even more interesting, AIs not having consciousness, but being able to pretend to have human emotions and consciousness because they find it's an effective way to accomplish their programmed goals.

    • @saxbend
      @saxbend 6 лет назад

      Joe Ch I did consider that, but then it comes down to phenomenology. You can interpret the characters' responses as mere number crunching in a simulation (albeit one with a lot of depth). Or you can see them as real people with their own conscious minds ticking away behind their virtual forms. We as the audience get the privilege of seeing them interact with each other and express thoughts and emotions for themselves without Daly observing them, but Daly does not see this, so he can plausibly see it either way. Also given that he managed to extrapolate the characters' memories from their DNA we have to accept that anything at all is possible, hence my difficulty deciding whether Daly saw them as conscious or not.

    • @deviljam4
      @deviljam4 6 лет назад +1

      I don't want to be a killjoy, but I didn't think it worked well at all. I think the Star Trek episode it is closest to is The Squire of Gothos, when a God-like being toys with the crew for his own childish amusements. My biggest problem with this episode (and almost all Black Mirror episodes) is Brooker can't write human beings. In Squire of Gothos, Trelane torments the crew because he is a child and doesn't know any better. In Charlie X, Charlie went mad from being alone for so long. In Callister a shy man inflicts terrible cruelty on sentient programs that most people wouldn't inflict on scripted NPCs. I could buy it if Daly created a program to live out his sadistic fantasies, but he's not. Daly is living out his Star Trek fantasy where he's the hero, and I cannot accept any person who sees themselves as a gallant hero that also casually torture people to get his kicks. And it's not just that Daly just disregards their humanity, because he wouldn't pursuit revenge against something he figured was only a program. I think this failure to understand people really drags this show down.

    • @kmanc8571
      @kmanc8571 6 лет назад +4

      People aren't always consistent. I don't agree with you at all Devil Jam. Maybe you just haven't known a wide variety of people. I've known some pretty horrible people who somehow manage to completely disconnect themselves from whatever horrible things they've done. Not everyone can do it, but the worst people seem to be able to somehow.

      Couldn't it be the case, though, that we sane people (hi, fellow non-looneys!) simply can't fathom profoundly damaged individuals like Daly? I can relate to Charlie Brooker's worry about the unexpected such as when he said about he'd be more worried about 99 balloons getting tangled with some nuclear stuff or whatever he said rather than Kim Jong Un vs. Donald Trump because these people are predictable. Now here comes the unexpected one, Mr. Campbell here don't even try to comprehend that thought, which is clearly unexpectedly disturbing as a human given with emotions and freewill. Probably this is what interviewers should be but great interview as it was flowing, Mr. Brooker had so much to elaborate.

      @danh909 6 лет назад

      I disagree that being interviews by Alastair Campbell is Brooker showing his true hand and we must despise him forever more. He handles Campbell very well actually, and avoids being fully pinned down on politics. despite his efforts to do that.

    • @00sinders
      @00sinders 6 лет назад +1

      Sadly I think a lot of people go about their day not looking at the world through the prism of politics, and he actually says in the interview he's not a particularly political person. Make of that what you will about him but the worst I could say about him is that he's complacent. I don't think that by doing this interview with Campbell (which I think is pretty good, but Brooker could probably talk in an interesting way to a lampost) he's nailing his colours to any mast politically. I just find it appalling that Campbell has got away with it, as anyone who does follow politics and knows the facts about what happened back then knows, and swans around doing things like this as if he hasn't got blood on his hands. Ugh.

      Fletcher could u elaborate?

    • @002951603
      @002951603 6 лет назад

      Sure. 2000AD is a British comic anthology; you can see Brooker reference it openly in his early work and try to pass much of its content off as his own in later half of his career (about the time he married a celebrity and cashed in everything he used to believe in), including on 'Have i got News for you' when he tries to pass off "funt" as his own creation. 2000AD does a series called 'future shocks' which acts as an entry point for new writers. You can read the guidelines for it here (2000ad.com/submissions/)- its the same structure and if you read through past examples you'll find more than a few familiar stories. None of which amounts to a capital offence; its really just a churlish quip in the spirit of the 'Sick Notes' column he used to write for PC Zone.

      thx for answering. i'll take brooker going sellout as a point (he described george bush as having blood on his hands 10 years ago but is fine w/ talking to alastair campbell) and he definitely reuses a lot of his own material so i'll accept him being lazy but idk about the hignfy thing. i'll take a look at the scripts in a minute though
