Lyrics:
I don't believe in first impressions
For just this once I hope that looks don't deceive
I ain't got time for true confessions
I've got to make the move right now
Got to meet that girl somehow
I've gotta get it right the first time
That's the main thing
I can't afford to let it pass
You get it right the next time that's not the same thing
Gonna have to make the first time last.

This album should've won like 20 Grammys.
Billy said that it would have won album of the year if it wasn't for foot loose
Lol. True.
There were alot of songs on the album.
IKR
Andrew Whitcomb huh
Absolute all American belter yeah!
How could this songs be not a huge hit? The whole song builds around the brilliant and creative drum pattern of Liberty DeVitto. This song is beyond brilliant.
+Ben Lai right on
I agree 100% ❤️😃
I've had the same thought, this song is absolutely brilliant!
Liberty? Libertario? My neighbor??? ❤️
Absolute matey. Even I can't resist it.
It absolutely baffles me that this song wasn't a major hit of his. This song and "Everybody Has A Dream" are perhaps the most overlooked Billy Joel songs of all time. The first seven tracks on this album are masterpieces, don't get me wrong, but I feel that people tend to ignore or under appreciate these two songs due to them.
TheMedicalReptile The Stranger is my absolute favorite album... Was introduced to Billy Joel's Talents Riding to high school with my best friend Russ, he had it on 8Track and we wore it out..
TheMedicalReptile yah those r better but these r both excellent, I guess billy Joel realized that they wouldn't be hits when he made them the last tracks of the album
I agree, this song is fantastic, The Stranger is one of the greatest albums of all time, it inspired me to become a song writer. but I have to take exception to "Everybody Has A Dream", its the only week cut on the album.
TheMedicalReptile yeah. Vienna is also heavily ignored, and Just the Way You Are is the Romania of the album hits.
For the 6,929,420 people who didn’t get the jokes, let me explain:
Romanian is a Romansch language, meaning it is related to French, Spanish, Italian, etc. They are far away from all of the nations where these three languages are spoken, making them the guy they acknowledge but could care less if they weren’t Latin. Same with Just the Way You Are. If the songs had feelings of their own, they’d probably acknowledge the fact Just the Way You Are is a hit, but ignore it more than, say, Movin’ Out, Only the Good Die Young, or Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.
The other joke?
It went right over your head.
I can get behind this one being overlooked or underappreciated. But 'Everybody Has A Dream' to me at least didn't fit in with the album. Another personal favorite underrated Billy songs is 'Two Thousand Years'.
That “la la la la” makes me so happy...
Billy’s “Philadelphia Freedom”.
La la la la la was in Crocodile Rock.
@@jdenino6022 I was talking of the general atmosphere of the piece, not of the La La La in particular!
"¡La la la la la laaa!, ¡la la la la la loh!" 🎶
Yet another hidden gem from Billy. I think most would agree The Stranger LP was his best.
Yes- not a single dull track on that album. My mom played 'The Stranger' a lot when I was a kid, and this song was my favorite. Now I'd say it's 'Scenes From An Italian Restaurant'- maybe there's some sad nostalgia that comes with hearing it at age 50- but I still love them all.
this was on the radio in NYC.
Billy used samba to great effect here. Intelligent lyrics, tells the truth, and has a pop formula and sensibilities. This song was not written, but crafted. One of my all time faves!
Maybe I'm hearing a lot of flute? Definitely a Latin feel...
@@girlfromthebronxbywayofelb7288 think that's not a flute but a synth. It's a samba, which is Brazilian.
The most perfect song for a young single guy.
Definitely bill’s most underrated track. Absolutely beautiful
It's like Steely Dan - even the underrated songs are total gems.
I don't believe in first impressions
For just this once I hope that looks don't deceive
I ain't got time for true confessions
I've got to make the move right now
Got to meet that girl somehow
I've gotta get it right the first time
That's the main thing, oohh oohh
I can't afford to let it pass
You get it right the next time that's not the same thing, ooh ooh
Gonna have to make the first time last
La, la, la, la, la (Repeat)
I'm not much good at conversation
I was never to smooth at comin' on real strong
If all it takes is inspiration
Then I might have just what it takes
If I don't make no bad mistakes and I get it right the first time
That's the main thing
Can't afford to let it pass
You get it right the next time that's not the same thing
Have to make the first time last
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la (Repeat)
I might find the courage, yeah
I might get up the nerve
But if my timing ain't just right
What purpose would it serve?
I don't know, I don't know
I don't know how to say those first few words
If I want to put myself in touch
The first few moments mean so much
So I suppose it's now or never
Before that woman walks right out of my life
Just let me pull myself together
I've got to give it one good try
Gotta take my chance tonight
I've gotta get it right the first time
That's the main thing
I can't afford to let it pass
You get it right the next time it's not the same thing
Gonna have to make the first time last
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la (Repeat)
One of my favorite songs from this incredible album.
I think BJ's voice sounds better on this album than his entire collection and I NEVER get sick of hearing every song hence this listen 46 years after this album's release!
Great tune. One of the albums of my life. Amazing.
The Stranger was one of the albums i bought and has a profound influence on me. A true classic.
just heard this song -- f'n bad ass -- cool lyrics -- and danceable -- almost has a tropical samba beat -- I'm humbled by a genius
When I was a pretentious teen piano player who knew all of his songs, this was one of the lesser peak BJ songs. These days it's right up there. Same with 'She's Right on Time' and 'You May Be Right'.
I can't believe that this was not a hit
Billy Joel trying to teach you how to stand up for yourself, and how to talk with women in your age group.
+Brett Koeshall Money doesn't talk, it screams
Yes so many men are immature about relationships. Don't even approach the woman then if they do get her do not treat her properly lose her and expect another chance.
Brett Koeshall
Amazing
This is one of my most favorite Billy Joel songs!
Billy's best album IMO
Underrated song. Billy Joel is too underrated, he is a very complete artist.
For all of those people out there taking antidepressants, stop and listen to this song. It will lift you up. I grew up in the 70's and some how I managed to live most of my life without ever hearing this song. I always liked Billy Joel, but never actually bought an album. Then one day when I was in Shanghai, China I was downloading some songs to my phone and this one popped up and I didn't recognize the title and thought why not. Then I played it and a huge smile was on my face and I started moving like dancing to Salsa. I felt like I was going to explode from joy. I couldn't stop listening to the song over and over again for days. I still come back to it now 7 years later, I still smile and still dance. Masterpiece.
This is songwriting at it's best
This is a truly magical song. I think anyone who has been in love can relate to it. It's so sweet and affective and it's true that you have to get it right or the woman will walk out of your life.
the best album should have won 15 GRAMMYS GENIUS AND BRILLIANT SONG WRITING
Top 10 greatest album of all time
My favorite song from Mr. Joel❤️
Me too
Its not my favourite, but that's just because billy joel is probably my favourite ever musician. Every single one of his sings is a masterpiece.
ooh he is so good at subtle chord changes. Like George Harrison.
Every track on The Stranger is a banger, this one included! Great feelgood song. This is my go-to song when I'm getting ready in the bathroom before going out and meeting a girl.
This should've also been a single, love that 70s sound! Oh how I miss your Rock Music writing Billy!
I absolutely love this song. I listen to this at least once a day.
My late brother's favorite song off The Stranger. So many awesome songs on this album!
I love the pseudo disco beat! Although Billy Joel never embraced disco in his music, this is surely the closest it ever got!
I don't think it's remotely close to a disco beat. There are actually at least 5 distinct drum rhythms that Liberty DeVito weaves together seamlessly.
definitely danceable and from a time when dancing was cool to show off -- also has a bit of a Samba beat -- like any great art can be anything to anyone
Substitute the word "disco" with calypso or samba and you are even closer.
It's Disco, no doubt about it. If you know your Disco - and I'm not talking about the lowest common denominator rubbish that everyone knows and derides - you know what you're listening to. Salsoul was one of numerous labels releasing latin stuff for the dancefloor that is almost certainly the inspiration for this sound. It's Disco and it's brilliant!
How is this song not a bigger hit?
It's unfortunately usually overshadowed by all the other classics in this album (which all deserve to be hits in their own right)
This song's measured driving beat does not translate well to uptempo live performances.
Go listen to a live version.
This is such a, playful, charming song, sung with real heart. Love the bass too.
This entire album is amazing but I love this song seriously
Now this song is special to me. I used to have this album on 8-track when I was a very little kid, and played it endlessly over and over including when I slept. I still listen to music when I sleep. This song got lost in time, and so I hadn't heard it since I was about 6 years old, when I rediscovered it in my 40's. What a feeling!
Gosh, 37 years ago. Was a lost track, yet still fresh.
40 years :0
Diego 43
Around 40 for me too. I forgot about this one!
44 years and its better than everything nowadays
@@glendarjj3991 I disagree
Every song R&R greatness! Musically, lyrically,vocally...Joel AND his band were/are HOF'ers.
Une belle pépite méconnue de cet album extraordinaire. 46 ans plus tard, il n'a pas pris une ride 👍👍👍
Essentially a preview of the next album.
A very underrated gem from the first album I ever purchased and a fantastic recording all around!!
This is honestly one of the most underappreciated Joel tracks ever.
One of my favorite Billy Joel song. Can't believe all these years have passed and I m still digging it.
Me too
Another gem of a song off an altogether great album.
Masterpiece without a doubt
One of my fav Billy Joel tunes
You've always gotten it right, Billy!
he's incredible and this song is just masterful...
One of the best albums ever!
Could be his best song, ever. So sophisticated, reminds me of college.
I'm a big fan of scenes from an Italian restaurant, every song on this album is good.
Is college sophisticated? We must have had different experiences..
Very motivating music. Energetic and uplifting. You don't hear that in today's music. Makes me think of
how life was in 1977. It was a very colorful time back then. People were more incommunicado with each other and face to face conversations. Plus people were more eccentric and fun then.
@adolf hitler official okay adolf hitler
Like I said on another track from this album, every song on is album cou have been a huge hit. This has a nice, catchy tune, and great lyrics about the unsure guy ryingto get up the erve to approach the lady. Great stuff!
One of the best bass riffs ever.
This was one of the songs my drum teacher had me learn. Liberty DeVito is a master!
The angst of the twenty something guy trying to chat up the gorgeous chick at the bar, while dealing with his insecurities, body odor and receding hairline. One of the great rock songs of all time. Billy Joel hit the moment right on the head.
This actually my favorite Billy Joel song...🍺😎👍
Rockin Billy. Filler song, I don't think so. Hed been working on it a while. Hinted at it in a concert months earlier. Its a small masterpeice like the blend of sounds on Come Together. I'm not saying its Beatles, Billy did that later with Laura and Suprises. But Drum, cymbals, piano, bass, guitar and flute are all distictly heard here. Great Deep Cut for the novice fan, and regular on the daily set lists of the Loyalists. Oh yeah, and read the lyrics without the music sometime, pure poetry and voice of atleast four generations.
this was the flip side of "just the way you are" i believe.i played this even more.
so brilliant each tune sounds different and all quality chords.. rhythms.. the GENIUS OF BILLY THE KID.. GOOD BAND .HE ARRANGED HIMSELF. HE LEFT ELTON HALF A MILE AWAY BEHIND.. GOD GIFTS TO THIS MAN..
What a great classic album by Billy Joel. Thanks for posting.
This song has so much going on. Interesting drum fade in, patterns and breaks, a flute solo, la la la'ing that reminds me of Stevie, or Stevie of Billy, an aggressive and firm full voiced delivery, a bit of a samba/Latin vibe in the blend. The Stranger album was a listening option a couple of nights ago as I flew back from the Dominican Republic to Toronto and this song, while new to me, is now a BJ favorite. This song really sings over headphones. They can't all be hits and I can see that it would have been hard to place at that time given how music was so segmented back then. Today this Latin vibe may have had a chance. Love. This. Track ❤️! Thank you Air Transat for introducing it to me!! /d
Esta canción contagia buen humor, una genialidad
I remember thinking that this should have been the first single off the LP. I thought this one felt like fall, and "Just the Way You Are" like winter. I was seventeen and not in the record business!
Love it! Billy is one of my favorites.
My favorite Billy Joel albums - The Stranger, 52nd Street, Street Life Serenader, The Nylon Curtain and Turnstiles.
A deep track from The Stranger. His road band is the secret weapon of the entire album.
Damn, I just realized this sounds like Stevie Wonder. This entire album is absolutely fantastic. What a gift!
This cool tune DID get good play on 'BZ-FM in Boston on '78 and I always sang it to myself in a loud print shop where I worked, thus being able to sing it.
How can you listen to this song without improvising an amateurish drum pattern on the table or on your knees? I can't do that 😋 when I listen to this, I need to find a hard surface around me to beat my hands on or I'm lost 🤣
My favourite album by my favourite singer.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
With Billy Joel open to the possibility of playing full albums in future concerts, I'm hoping for The Stranger to be among them. Especially to hear this rarity from his magnum opus.
I can't believe reading all of your old people comments lol, that this wasn't a hit. It's one of my favorite songs in music period
This is the best album ever
I was trying to learn this song on the drums, couldn't "Get It Right The First Time", but by the fifth I got it just right!
Great song, strangely overlooked. Latin disco tinged, a flavor of the Jacksons. Amazing percussion and bass lines.
Oh my gosh, my ears have not been graced with this song since 1995. I was just a kid with a cassette deck.
Perfect 70s jazzy sounds and the beats by Liberty DeVitto....sick!
This song is so amazing
Anche 40 anni dopo i pezzi di Billy sono i migliori !!!
Absolutely killer! Cheers, '62 Mathew St. (Total Retro Rock)
Growing up in NJ with the first weekend of MTV, Billy Joel, The Boss, Madonna, and Cyndi Lauper. . . . The sound coming out of North Jersey and NY was amazing. . . Along with Run DMC and the Beastie Boys. . . God, RIP Jay and MCA 😢. Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber just don't do it. Very few kids have any idea how good the music was then.
Very cool.
Pure talent
Not you say it wasn't major hit when every radio station play the hell out of it
Song never gets old! :-)
I used to bring this album to show and tell.... 52nd st too
Cool!
This album is so much awesome sauce it’s ridiculous❤️🔥🔥🔥🔥👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I really like it!
me, a three year Billy joel fan listening to this for the first time:.....I dig it
My fave song, 😍
One of Billy’s best.
Unrivaled in creativity
BJ has some fantastic album tracks.. This is one
I would like to see someone react to this song. It’s a deep track from The Stranger, and it should be played more.
I LOVE THE CHORUS, SO GOOOOD
this song is usually played in elevators in an instrumental version. I have heard it played that way. I also heard it played while being on hold waiting for someone to answer. Same instrumental version. The 1970s created many instrumental elevator songs. It's better than not being able to talk to someone in an elevator. Which is boring.
聴けてよかったです!ありがとうございます
This song should have its own Wikipedia article
Just fell for a girl for the first time in quite a few years. This song immediately came to mind, it's now my confidence song
Great solo drum intro.
Great song!
I 😍 it.
