I’m 53 and dying of Stage 4 Inoperable Double Lung Cancer and I LOVE this song. Death is as quick as a blink of an eye. So like I tell everyone : Death is shutter speed!!!! I’ve been dead once already. I died when I was 9 years old and was down for 45 minutes and I was allowed to come back. I’ve lived every moment like it’s My last because as I learnt at age 9 “No one is promised a tomorrow”!!!!!

Played this song at my son's Celebration of Life Party. The theme we chose in honor of Shane was. Take Time To Make Time! This was the message we believe he wanted to leave everyone. Make time for what's important to you. He was definitely a Take the Long Way Home kinda kid. I don't know what he might have been if he'd had more time, but whatever it was it was gonna be great!!! However in his 21 years here, he significantly left an impact on everyone he met!!! This song always made me emotional but now I can't hear it without crying for my baby. Relax n Chill son, because you are on a luxurious permanent dream vacation! I'll be there when it's my turn, until then I will stay strong & play our songs!!I love you Shane! 7/15/2000-8/16/2021❤❤❤

I LOVE this comment. That was her final dedication song to you two. That's so beautiful.. your mother must have been an angel. Not everyone is lucky enough to get messages like that from their loved ones after they pass away. I really hope it gave yous some comfort at that time when you needed it most. reading your comment brought genuine tears to my eyes for the first time in years. I rarely cry for my mom, because I know she's somewhere that is better than here. There is something after here and I would assume whoever-she-is is better then this Earth, because mama was an angel. Perhaps our mothers have crossed paths in the great unknown at some point ❤ I'm not religious but I do have a spiritual side somewhere in there .I do believe, 100% there is something after here. This life is just one of many pit stops; that's the message I got from my mother in a dream I had, shortly after she took flight to the heavens and left papa and I behind. That was 17 years ago. she was letting you know that she's okay . I really would like to believe there is something after. My mother left me and my dad a message also the night that she died. She left one of my dad's tapes on the bed at night. He woke up to it by his feet. When I came in to say good morning he was shocked and without words. As we both went down the stairs to try and eat something, they're in the middle of the kitchen also was a box. The box was for me. It was filled with many confiscated albums from various rock bands she took away from me when I brought bad reports home from school. Mama was a no-nonsense type of person if something was confiscated you never saw it again. I saw things that I hadn't seen since I was a small child in that box. Items that my dad didn't even know she still had hidden away. He thought she tossed em long ago. This album was in my box that she returned to me.

Growing up in the Deep South in Mississippi in the 1970’s, imagine the shock of my brothers when l discovered this song and played in constantly! Why? Because in my neck of the south, black teenagers didn’t listen to this type of music. You can imagine the ribbing and being ostracized by my peers in 1979 as a HS senior! I didn’t care! Music is a universal language and SuperTramp was one of my favorite groups during my senior year!!!! Rock On!!!!

My late husband( also black) also loved it. When we were dating, we used to enjoy it on the car radio. So, you think you're a Romeo
Playing a part in a picture show
Well, take the long way home
    Take the long way home
'Cause you're the joke of the neighborhood
Why should you care if you're feelin' good?
Well, take the long way home
    Take the long way home
There are times that you feel you're part of the scenery
All the greenery is comin' down, boy
And then your wife seems to think you're part of the furniture
Oh, it's peculiar, she used to be so nice
When lonely days turn to lonely nights
You take a trip to the city lights
And take the long way home
    Take the long way home
You never see what you want to see
    Forever playing to the gallery
You take the long way home
    Take the long way home
When you're up on the stage, it's so unbelievable
Oh, unforgettable, how they adore you
But then your wife seems to think you're losing your sanity
Oh, calamity, is there no way out?
Does it feel that your life's become a catastrophe?
Oh, it has to be, for you to grow, boy
When you look through the years and see what you could have been
Oh, what you might have been
If you would have more time
So when the day comes to settle down
Who's to blame if you're not around?
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
You took the long way home
    Long way home
    Long way home
    Long way home
    Long way home
    Long way home

“when you look through the years and see what you could’ve been, oh what you might’ve been if you had more time.”
As a youth, you don’t have the wisdom to see the power in this message. What’s really tragic is that by the time you realize and obtain this wisdom and want to act on it, it’s too late.

Anyway, now it's been playing over and over in my mind all day. So, I had to look it up on RUclips. As a kid I probably heard this song hundreds of times, but i had never paid attention to the lyrics. Lyrics:
So you think you're a Romeo
    playing a part in a picture-show
    Take the long way home
    Take the long way home
Cos you're the joke of the neighborhood
Why should you care if you're feeling good
    Take the long way home
    Take the long way home
But there are times that you feel you're part of the scenery
all the greenery is comin' down, boy
And then your wife seems to think you're part of the
furniture oh, it's peculiar, she used to be so nice.
When lonely days turn to lonely nights
you take a trip to the city lights
And take the long way home
    Take the long way home
You never see what you want to see
    Forever playing to the gallery
You take the long way home
    Take the long way home
And when you're up on the stage, it's so unbelievable,
    unforgettable, how they adore you,
But then your wife seems to think you're losing your sanity,
oh, calamity, is there no way out?
Does it feel that you life's become a catastrophe?
Oh, it has to be for you to grow, boy.
When you look through the years and see what you could
have been oh, what might have been,
    if you'd had more time.
So, when the day comes to settle down,
Who's to blame if you're not around?
You took the long way home
You took the long way home...........

Fast forward to 2021. I just now realized the total relevance of the Breakfast in America album cover, which I never really thought about when the album originally came out. New York is built completely from dining room table fixtures like salt shakers, coffee cups, etc. The World Trade Center is made from sugar cubes. All the ship berths are knives, forks, and spoons. And the waitress is the Statue of Liberty, replete with paper crown and lofting a glass of orange juice in the air instead of a torch. The entire scene is being viewed from an airline passenger window. Maybe all this stuff should have be obvious right away, LOL, but it's taken me all this time to actually appreciate the creative genius here.
