I love the fact that when Billy Joel was asked why he didn't make more albums -- because he totally can -- he said that he feels that he's had his say, and I felt that. It's like we go through life and make our mark, say what we're born to say, and then go, and if we're lucky, be remembered. And Billy Joel will definitely be remembered.

Especially good for Joel because he got out right as the alternative scene was starting up and if he kept going he would've joined his other 80s contemporaries in Todd In The Shadows' "nirvana killed me career" category

This is a quote from Wikipedia "Joel attended Hicksville High School until 1967, but did not graduate with his class.[14] He was playing at a piano bar to help support himself, his mother and sister, and missed a crucial English exam after playing a late-night gig at a piano bar the evening before.[14] Although Joel was a comparatively strong student, at the end of his senior year he did not have enough credits to graduate. Rather than attend summer school to earn his diploma, Joel decided to begin a career in music: "I told them, 'To hell with it. If I'm not going to Columbia University, I'm going to Columbia Records, and you don't need a high school diploma over there'."[28] In 1992, he submitted essays to the school board in lieu of the missed exam. They were accepted, and he was awarded his diploma at Hicksville High's annual graduation ceremony 25 years after leaving.[29

    • @duffman18
      @duffman18 3 года назад +16

Yeah it sounds like a McCartney song, like something off of Ram perhaps. His singing voice even sounds like Maccas in this. I wonder if that's exactly what he was going for. Like he'd been listening to a lot of McCartney's solo stuff, and his stuff with Wings, and got inspired. I wonder if McCartney has ever covered this

    • @michaelulbricht9438
      @michaelulbricht9438 3 года назад +17

I cannot find any evidence that McCartney has ever sung this, however, it was inspired by the 16 minute suite from Abbey Road which is primarily Paul's musical idea. "Like most of Joel's songs, he composed the music first, which in this case was inspired by The Beatles, specifically the suite of songs on their Abbey Road album where a few unfinished tunes were put together to create one coherent piece." Take care!

Reminds me of my high school days ( class of 80, biggest class up to that point to ever graduate from that school... 200) my sweetheart, prom date and we sat together and held hands at graduation, came with my family to see me graduate from Navy Boot camp, at sra I got perfumed love letters, etc... then we drifted apart, when I got home I tried to find her but had no luck. I saw her at our first reunion and talked to her for about 2 minutes before her obviously insecure husband dragged her from the reunion.
28 years later I had a Myspace account which o found the easiest way to keep in touch with my daughter in college. One day a woman posted a question as to whether her son should go to college or the military, I gave her my reply and the next day she thanked me and ask. Me a few more questions about the military, one thing led to another, we met and it was great, we married two months later with the blessing of our combined 7 children who all get along better than brothers and sisters, it's beyond great. I walked in her mother's living room and had her hide the Sapphire engagement ring and she was the only person who knew. I proposed at a theatre showing of " It's a Wonderful Life" ( her favorite movie) during the scene where Bert and Ernie sing " I love you truly " it's been a great ride.

His hands and fingers were moving along the piano's keyboard at an absolutely astounding rate of speed, but he made look as easy as if he were talking a causal Sunday stroll in the park. I can imagine Billy playing this song with as much ease.

    • @mikeboothroyd5978
      @mikeboothroyd5978 4 года назад +175

I see it all as one story. I could be wrong, but I’ve always interpreted that the song is being sung by Eddie.
Italian Restaurant is Eddie arriving at he and Brenda’s favorite date night locale. Lost Time is Eddie and Brenda having an unexpected encounter and reconnecting, leading Eddie to remember he and Brenda’s relationship, which leads directly to him reminiscing about their marriage, before his stroll down memory lane is interrupted by the waiter again asking what wine he would prefer.

We both looked at each other (both being hardcore Billy Joel fans), and it was a unique one-in-a-million experience of us both laughing our butts off, and a deep love for each other being shared at that particular moment.
That was the last time I was "truly" in love, and felt love in return...unfortunately we were never fated to be together, but I still think of her, and that dingy restaurant, every time I hear this song.

Between this song and Allentown, I no longer think of Billy Joel as a guy who merely writes songs. He teaches American history. The schoolbooks teach the events as they happened in the world. Billy teaches them as they happened at the dinner table, at the machine shop, and in the hearts. I just hope he reads these comments sometimes and understands how much we all appreciate what he's done.

    Lyrics
A bottle of white, a bottle of red
Perhaps a bottle of rose instead
We'll get a table near the street
    In our old familiar place
You and I, face to face
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
It all depends upon your appetite
I'll meet you any time you want
    In our Italian Restaurant
Things are okay with me these days
Got a good job, got a good office
Got a new wife, got a new life
    And the family's fine
    We lost touch long ago
You lost weight I did not know
You could ever look so nice after
    So much time
Do you remember those days hanging out
    At the village green
    Engineer boots, leather jackets
    And tight blue jeans
Drop a dime in the box play the
    Song about New Orleans
    Cold beer, hot lights
    My sweet romantic teenage nights
    Brenda and Eddie were the
    Popular steadys
And the king and the queen
    Of the prom
Riding around with the car top
    Down and the radio on
    Nobody looked any finer
Or was more of a hit at the
    Parkway Diner
We never knew we could want more
    Than that out of life
    Surely Brenda and Eddie would
    Always know how to survive
Brenda and Eddie were still going
Steady in the summer of '75
When they decided the marriage would
Be at the end of July
    Everyone said they were crazy
Brenda you know you're much too lazy
Eddie could never afford to live that
    Kind of life
But there we were wavin' Brenda and
    Eddie goodbye
They got an apartment with deep
    Pile carpet
And a couple of paintings from Sears
A big waterbed that they bought
    With the bread
They had saved for a couple
    Of years
They started to fight when the
    Money got tight
And they just didn't count on
    The tears
They lived for a while in a
    Very nice style
But it's always the same in the end
They got a divorce as a matter
    Of course
    And they parted the closest
    Of friends
Then the king and the queen went
    Back to the green
But you can never go back
    There again
Brenda and Eddie had had it
Already by the summer of '75
From the high to the low to
    The end of the show
For the rest of their lives
    They couldn't go back to
    The greasers
The best they could do was
    Pick up the pieces
We always knew they would both
Find a way to get by
    That's all I heard about
    Brenda and Eddie
Can't tell you more than I
    Told you already
And here we are wavin' Brenda
    And Eddie goodbye
A bottle of red, a bottle of white
Whatever kind of mood you're in tonight
I'll meet you anytime you want
    In our Italian Restaurant

This is one of my favorite songs of all-time. It's got an epic 3-act quality to it like some other great songs. But it deals with life in a fairly matter-of-fact way, without a lot of ambiguous or mysterious lyrics. The shifts in tone are handled with remarkable deftness. There are so few love stories or love songs about divorce. Yet growing up in the '80s, divorce was a fixture of American life. Half your friends were either from divorced families or you lived through either their parents or your own getting divorced. Now many of those same kids have lived through divorces of their own. More analysis and reflection on just what this strange, new and unpleasant institution in modern life really means is useful.

“Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” is not just my most favorite Billy Joel song, but also one of my all-time favorite songs. Actually, the entire _The Stranger_ (1977) album is amongst my most beloved ones. Billy Joel has done an amazing and brilliant work.
    Thank you very much, Billy!

Love this song. I have my own "Italian Restaurant" in the West Village: La Lanterna Di Vittorio. Been going there with friends since the early 1990s. Spent many a Saturday night, birthday, and New Years there.

That's awesome! I used to have my own as well, an old pizzeria where I spent most of my Friday/Saturday nights in high school. The root beer floats flowed like wine and the smell of garlic kissed our nostrils as the neverending '70s music filled the room. Many important conversations were spent on those greasy outdated tables... but not quite as many as the silly talks only high schoolers can have!

I went to my first proper bar last night, and it was a piano bar. These two guys were taking recommendations, so of course I had to put down Scenes.
Well after some great songs, they start playing it, and mom and I nail every single word just like we do in the car! Then one of the piano guys, taking a break at the bar, said to my mom, "I'm so glad she knows all the words to this song. It warms my heart."
Last night, singing songs and having a drink, was the happiest I have been in a long time. I'm glad this music is in my life!

This song is an "album song", was never released as a single and yet it is one of the most beloved of his songs and mostrequested song at his concerts. It's from a time when artists crafted albums, like "Rumors" by Fleetwood Mac or "Aja" by Steely Dan. Billy has a ton of such album songs. My favorites include "Vienna", "Rosalinda's Eyes", "Zanzibar". Anyone else want to chime in with their favorite non-single BJ songs?
