How to Play Thor in Dungeons & Dragons (Fighter/Sorcerer Multiclass)

  • Hey look!! It’’s a Fifth edition Thor build for Dungeons and Dragons! Be sure to vote for the next MCU Character in the comments, choices are at the end of this video. This is a good mix of martial abilities and magical power coming together to make your character a god. For those who think he should have been a Tempest Cleric, the only lightning spell they get is “Call Lightning”, and Thor needs more options than that. But if you think there’s a way to make that work let me know, I love hearing alternate ideas for builds.

Hear me out here... dont have high strength (dont dump it though) and instead go hexblade and put it all into charisma. So Thor originally had his powers taken away and only had his strength when wielding the hammer. A hexblade fits this perfectly, have the hammer be your pact weapon and then mix in the levels of storm sorcerer using booming blade instead of extra attack.

Honestly, just swap out a feat for War Caster. Booming Blade as a reaction when they try to move. They take the basic weapon attack damage, plus the extra thunder damage. PLUS they're already moving so they proc the second set of thunder damage.
Definitely situational. But so much fun. Also, yeah. Going 7 levels of EK instead of the 6 from here can add even more usage of Booming Blade. Pretty much your choice of going a touch more martial, or getting that Sorcerer reaction damage.

Thor wears armor and you can't cast or focus on spells while raging makes any barbarian caster combo basically worthless he's also a renowned and trained warrior not anger fueled. I get the conception he's a Norse god so he must be a barbarian but one it's insulting and misrepresentation mostly do to the popularity of berserkers which have been misinterpreted as drug crazed and were more like elite soldiers of jarls typically settling disputes on behalf of his jarl in ritual combat. his magic comes from himself and not belief in a god.

I feel like pact of the blade is better for the magic seasoning for Thor. First it opens your martial subclass up as you don't need EK (I'd go champion or battle master as they are both on theme and help make his raw strength better)
Second it offers Odin as a celestial patron (as his magic sealed the power to the hammer) or a flavor rework of the kraken (with gm approval) which is nice, though I'm going to be using a presumed kraken rework (Thor's godly essence is the "patron due to Odin's magic on mjolnir).
10 levels of warlock gets us 5th level spells, the most important patron feature, and access to the invocations needed.
First at level 6 you get tentacles from the kraken that work as two extra slappers adding 1d4 bludgeon as an option as well as a charisma based grapple, these can be reflavored as lashes of lightning that strike like arms for the god of thunder. Then at level 10 you get resistance to lightning and thunder as well as ignoring difficult terrain.
Next is the invocations, we get 5, two from the kraken and 3 base. Overcharged let's you ignore resistance and turns immunity into half damage. Then is Eldritch storm, which allows you to choose lightning or thunder damage instead of force and adds melee attack chance on 5ft for lightning and wanted things up for 120ft for thunder. Otherworldly leap let's you do the hammer spin jump by casting jump at will, Eldritch spear/ repelling blast as your Eldritch blast is important and can always use a buff. Thirsting blade makes your melee better by adding two attacks Everytime you use one attack action.
So 10 champion fighter 10 kraken* bladelock, can't say how it'd fare comparatively but it removes the int casting while still trying to stay on character

I built Thor as a Storm Cleric, it just felt more appropriate. You still get all the weapon and armor you could want, you can put him in plate, and stack his defense so he's hard to hit, you can have d8 for hit die so you dont have to worry about losing out on health from magic spells, and taking the highest con and tough feat can give you 7 hit points per level.
I also talked to my DM about changing the channel divinity to something more Thor in character, since Clerics tend to get an ability worthy of a 3rd level spell slot, she agreed a 3rd level spell wouldn't be out of bounds for what a channel divinity can do, so Lightning Bolt became a twice per short rest channel divinity and felt very, very in character for Thor. I also managed to get a necklace of fireball, but asked if it could be reflavored to lightning bolt instead, they agreed. Allowing me to essentially wrap it around my hammer, and channel it as if it was my hammer casting the one time use lightning bolts.
What they didn't expect, was that I would then use my second channel divinity to max out lightning damage. This lead to some rather epic moments of insane damage.
Of course this required DM cooperation to reflavor, change damage types, spells, and while none of it made me any stronger than any other cleric, it definitely felt more thor like and made the game a much better experence for everyone involved.

Also you don't really need intelligence. Just focus on abjuration spells. Since you never go above first level wizard spells, go with protection from evil and absorb elements to reveal your toughness and experience fighting other realms creatures. Until you get sorcerer 6 and fly, you don't have a lot of concentration spells so protection is a nice enhancement. I flavor shield being Thor spinning his hammer to block attacks. If you want earth tremor for the shock and awe of it (Even though you have thunderclap which does more damage at will) you can get it with your sorcerer levels and use the higher sorcerer DC instead. So what I did was make Thor a tempest cleric, for you see I am a strong believer of the "rule of fun". So I may have mix and matched the spells given to the subclass to fit Thor better. I then added rune knight and chose Goliath instead of aasimar. My reasoning was Thor is known as a giant slayer so reskin Goliath since the abilities are in character and the Goliath language since he hunts them. I also changed the fire chains from rune knight to lightning.

If we're going more accurate to Norse lore, Thor is in fact part-Giant. He was also a red-headed absolute unit. So Giant Soul Sorcerer from UA could work. And to my understanding, he was a brutal warrior who piously served Odin and took no prisoners. So Paladin/Sorcerer comes to mind. Maybe Crown or Conquest Paladin mixed with Giant Sorcerer (probably Storm Giant). Bug your DM to give you a Dwarven Thrower and you're good. Fits lore-wise as well.

Episodes 8 and 9 of the Fire Emblem stats: Luigi and Thor.
    First, the skinny Mario Bro.
Luigi has a pretty basic build of being strong in brawling and reason. He doesn't have much in the way of weakness besides authority since he's always second fiddle.
Based on the Mario and Luigi series, Luigi tends to be the tank between the two brothers, and that will be reflected here.
    Next, the god of thunder.
Thor's best weapons are axes (both of his weapons count as axes here) and reason for all that lightning. His budding talent is in authority because he eventually works up to being Asgard's ruler. His weakness is in heavy armor because that conducts electricity.
His magic, strength, and HP are great but he has bad resistance.

Honestly replacing the fighter levels with levels in Valour or Swords bard might be better, more spells and you don’t have to worry about intelligence. You also get the benefit of more skills and expertise.

I think you could replace fighter with warlock though you loose action surge the paxt magic does the same thing as weapon bond and it is a cha caster instead of an int caster. Plus xanthars gives you 2 attacks in invocation form

im planning out my own thor inspired character as a dwarf storm cleric. I know that Thor is never depicted as dwarf-like, but the dwarf race gives my character access to a dwarven thrower. Hammer of thunderbolts is another Mjolnir-like weapon, but that requires gauntlets of ogre power and a belt of giant strength to use to its full potential.

You seem to have forgotten both booming blade (booming hammer) and lightning lure. 3d8 thunder (+ weapon damage) or lightning damage (and a pull effect) at will should be worth something, No? Eldritch knight 7 to still get both attacks. Also gust of wind or dust devil for storm effects and stuff Thor has done in the comics anyway.

Hexblade Warlock gets you a special weapon intrinsically bonded to you (Though you can't summon it, could trade the Tempest levels for Warlock levels if you wanted)
Tempest Cleric for that sweet sweet channel divinity and heavy armour
