I struggle with depression and my mother always used to sing this to me. It was like her special message. it’ll be two months since she passed this week. This is the first time I’ve listened to it since her passing. I miss her so much. And I hear these words as if they were her own. I love you mama

As a child I always wondered why he was so sad about not getting a golden ticket. As an adult it goes so much deeper, losing sight of your dreams, feeling like a failure, feeling like you're letting everyone down and battling the overwhelming feeling of sadness. That line "When the world get heavy never pitter pat'em
Up and at'em boy" so simple but so powerful. I don't know how anyone can find it boring.

I'd do the same thing! It was so slow and boring when I was a kid. As an adult I was basically in tears the first time I heard it. I grew up with a single mom and she'd always have this "hope" like Charlie's mom did and she'd get me out of my "funk". She still does that for me today and I do that for my students (I'm a school counselor) based on what she did for me.

For me, this song is all about a mother looking way past her own woes and praying for her son in private- hoping and pouring her heart even though he can’t see nor hear her. She’s worn, shabby, and tired, yet sees a future for her boy far away from where she has ended up. It’s not just about cheering up- it’s about realizing the beauty and preciousness within yourself that your mother sees every day.

For me it's incredible how people notice the message given about the boy, and don't think about the mother's situation. In the story, I imagine that she has barely reached 40, and has to work all day to support 4 sick elderly people and a child. But even so, after a tiring day of work, he finds the strength to cheer up his son. It is wonderful.

Hi everyone. For 60 years I had the honor and privilege of being a studio singer. I sang both solo and in backup groups. I was blessed to meet and work with so many brilliantly talented people, one of whom was Leslie Bricusse who wrote the songs for Willy Wonka. I had supplied the singing voice for Samantha Eggar in Dr. Dolittle and that’s where I met Leslie and Anthony Newley. When Wonka was completed they were not happy with Diana Sowie’s singing so Leslie recommend I do it. It was very easy as she’s not on camera much so I didn’t have to match her that much. Mel Stuart the director was pleased and very complementary to me the day of the recording. I have to say I love it when I see comments like “angelic voice” here. Peace and blessings, Diana Lee, girl singer. PS Interesting to see how many people as kids fast forwarded this scene but grew into it as adults. I always thought it was a lovely song. RIP Leslie, thanks for your brilliance

I agree. Even as a small child watching this movie I always really enjoyed this song and scene. Charlie walking through the wet streets all melancholy, while his mother sings that sad melody. You can’t help but feel the nostalgia. Even tho my first viewing was as a young child in the 90s’ I could feel the deep 70s’ blues in that night time atmosphere along with the style of clothing and hair. It’s movies like this that make me feel like I was from another time, that’s how powerful nostalgia can be.

I've always appreciated the differences between Charlie and the other kids. He's this forlorn, downcast boy, almost sickly looking, who has a sense of self doubt which makes him so relatable and endearing. The other kids are so self absorbed, never wanting for anything, spoiled brats. It makes you feel for Charlie even more in this scene, seeing him wandering the streets, not realising how much he means to his family and losing hope that he can have something his heart desires.

Think about the importance of the song in context with him and his feelings. He wants to give his family a better life, not his mom scrounging around for money for him, and then being forced to live in a 1-room bedroom. He wants more for his family and he tries to help his mom out by getting himself a job. So, this comes at a time where he’s down and feeling like life couldn’t get any better. It’s her statement to him to keep his head high.

I feel sorry for some people who don't like this song or part of the movie. My mother sang to me as a baby and kid, some of my earliest memories. A lot of people have never had that. Charlie's mother is a hard worker, doesn't have a social life of her own or seemingly a man friend, and yet still finds an opportunity to give him a positive note in life.

My grandma used to sing it and I never told anyone that.. then I met a man in my early 20’s who tried cheering me up one day using this song and replacing the name Charlie with my own name and it’s just one of the many reasons why I still love that man today, 20 yrs later… anytime I think of this song I immediately think fondly of him and how it always will be reserved just for him.
