My mom sang me this song to me, while I was in the emergency room after a suicide attempt. She was at my side the entire time. In real life my name is also Charlie. Now, every time I hear this song I think about my mom holding my hand, singing the song, while I broke into tears. I love you mom.
That is making me tear up. My mom used to always sing "You Are My Sunshine" to me when I was a baby and she gave me a decorative sign with those words to hang up in my apartment in my room.

My mom used to sing a few lines from this when I was a sad kid. She will still say "cheer up Charlie" when I call her and am sad or upset. This is the best song just for that reason if for no other. :)
Thank you, but it’s my singing for her. I went in the studio and replaced her singing at the recommendation of the lyricist and my friend, Leslie Bricusse. Done in 1971 RIP Diana Sowie and Leslie Bricusse

Two of her songs are here on RUclips, Where Knowledge Ends, Faith Begins and The World is a Circle. Also I sang a duet for that movie with my ex husband who sang for Peter Finch. The duet is called i Might Frighten Her Away
Agreed...one of my favorite parts. Her voice always reminds me of my own mother. That's pretty spectacular when an actor/actress can evoke such strong emotion. I feel she was perfectly cast and will remain immortalized in infamy.
I’m Mrs Bucket in my schools production of Willy wonka and everytine I rehearse this song I feel like breaking down because it’s such a down to earth scene. By far my favorite part of my character.
This song is perfect for all the children who only wish their parent's loved them enough to care that they would cheer up, instead of being obsessed only with their own life and pleasures. This song fills a deep hole left by unloving parents, if only for a few moments. For the kids whose parent's were singing "I've got a bill of sales right here!" and just wanted you around for slave work. Charlie got his golden ticket, Pete got his dragon, we have this song.
Seeing this as a child, I would normally skip or step away. As an adult, you comprehend the lyrics so well. Putting your self under the Elder, Adult, and Child's perspective. Innocents is suck out and reality hits you real hard. But, you keep on rolling with the punches.
I'm just going to say this song has played many sleepless nights when I felt like I screwed up in life. She has a wonderful voice the strings with the end part get me everytime. One more great song in a amazing movie cinema just isn't the same.

This happens to be my favorite scene from the 1971 Mel Stuart film adaptation of Roald Dahl's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.' As a forty-nine year old high-caliber autistic individual, i have not only survived (but i have also thrived). This extremely poignant scene has truly inspired me to (in the words of Casey Kasem), 'Keep [my] Feet on the Ground and Keep Reaching for the Stars.' indeed, this scene has always caused me to become quite teary-eyed. Notwithstanding my accomplishments to date (including graduation from the U. of California - Davis with a BA in political science), the one dream that has long remained quite elusive (to this day) has always been a long-term romantic relationship with a young lady which could eventually lead to marriage. Hopefully, this will change once i attain gainful employment as a paralegal. For the record, i am definitely open to courting a younger lady who happens to be on the very high end of the autism spectrum.
What a beautiful post from you. I am Diana Lee and it’s my singing voice you hear for Diana Sowie. It’s such a beautiful song and it’s so special to hear how it has affected people Lucky is the lady you end up with!! god bless

This song is beyond messed up. "Look, we had a kid but can't afford it, so now you're a work slave and don't get a future... Smile so I don't feel bad that I forced you into this hell." Literally the only bright spot is that his day will come, which is a reference to a written plot point. For every REAL kid this song relates to... there is no golden ticket. Just work and suffering. So many people in here like "I related to this as a kid because I was a little mopey, or my name was Charlie" WTF? Did you have to work in garbage strewn streets every night to keep your impoverished family afloat in one of the most wealthy and powerful nations in the world?
