    Vince Russo is not a narrative writer. He's a booker. He's only called a "writer" by people in the business that don't know what a writer actually is. A magazine writer is not the same as a narrative story writer. Russo had a million short-term angles and match concepts and character creations, but that's what a booker does. A writer starts with 3 acts (or 15 story beats like 'Save the Cat'), and develops a trail that leads you to a climactic emotion. All laid out ahead of time because the end doesn't make sense without the beginning and the middle. A booker just tries to get the immediate pop instead of the big, long, well-earned pop - and either don't know exactly where they're going or not very committed to where they're going. A writer, storyteller - they are absolutely committed to the end, because that's what the whole story is about.

    • @donovanbradford8231
      @donovanbradford8231 Месяц назад +3

      The thing that Bishoff brings up a lot of times Russo would come up with a beginning, middle, and end however the ending isn't great or what Russo thinks is a beginning, middle, and end is really a beginning and a middle but he doesn't have an end. So once you try to get an ending out of him, he freezes up and comes up with nothing.

    • @TheNextStep851
      @TheNextStep851 Месяц назад

      @@donovanbradford8231 That's because Russo booked month to month. He went with what the viewership and audience were telling him. Other bookers will drag out their idea for 6 months to a year regardless of whether or not it's working.
      In wrestling you can't stay committed to the end as the original post claimed, because you get injuries, suspensions, or the crowd just isn't into what is happening. There's a reason Russo oversaw record high viewership in 2 different companies - something no other booker has ever done. He has however booked long-term stuff. The Ministry angle started in October 1998 and ended in June 1999.

    • @JetForceFive
      @JetForceFive Месяц назад

      @donovanbradford8231 That's a good way of explaining it. There is value in being a great booker and in being a great writer, but when two work in tandem, it becomes something everyone remembers. The story doesn't even have to be great. It just has to make sense from start to finish, and the finish should in some way mirror/parallel or even be the polar opposite version of whatever happened in the beginning. Some call it "full-circle" moments or "poetic justice" but that is what a writer knows to do. Whereas a booker is really focused on instant gratification and then hoping to repeat the success. I think wrestling is always better when there's a mixture of both happening. Sometimes you want the guy to just say the thing, then do the thing and leave. Totally repeatable and can actually increase satisfaction for a period of time. But sometimes it's also great to just follow different journeys and feel like the time you invested was finally paid off.
      STORY: A cat starts crossing the busiest street in town, but is run over by a car. But the cat recovered from the injuries and went back to the same street 1 year later. The cat starts crossing the street, traffic is busier than before... tune in next week for the thrilling conclusion.
      BOOKER: A cat starts crossing the street. Then a dog comes. Then another cat comes. Then the two cats fight the dog. The end.
      A cat crossing a busy street is not that interesting on the surface, but becomes interesting when you write beats that force an audience to become emotionally invested in the outcome. That's why people care about Otis even when there's no titles or main events involved. He barely says anything, it's just story beat, story beats, story beat, and eventually, a climax.

    • @JetForceFive
      @JetForceFive Месяц назад

      @TheNextStep851 I appreciate that perspective, and I made a comment above that it doesn't have to be one or the other. When both are happening, wrestling is at its best. Yes, it's a physical business and sometimes injuries play a factor. But remember, a good story isn't about the physicality, it's about the psychology that leads to the physicality (see the cat example above). A good recent example is Punk/McIntyre, a past example is 1997 "in the rafters" Sting. If the story needs physicality every week, then as a writer (or booker) you've created your own corner to work out of.
      If the story is just about character and conflict, then the actual match can happen whenever as long as it makes sense to the rhythms of the story. For instance, Rocky isn't actually about boxing - it's about Rocky. Another thing to consider is that audiences are fickle, and bookers are reactionary (as you mentioned). You can cater to the immediate response and try to figure it out as you go, which usually leads to an anti-climactic resolution. Or you can just let the story cook and lead the audience to where they didn't know they wanted to go. A writer has a talent/skill for that, because it's long term emotional manipulation that leads people to a singular feeling at the end. Reactionary booking often creates disposable moments that are often forgotten a few weeks later. Which is what most wrestling has been for 40 years. The stuff that stands the test of time are usually things that took months or even years to get to.

    • @TheNextStep851
      @TheNextStep851 Месяц назад

      @@JetForceFive Sure, I agree with all of that. I'm just pointing out that Russo's philosophy was more month-to-month because in wrestling it's rare that a story can play out without any obstacles such as injuries, suspensions, backstage politics, contractual issues, or the crowd simply not being into it. Russo has talked about how he meticulously studied the minute-by-minute ratings and they are what dictated his shows. He removed what wasn't working in a quarter hour block and added more of what was working, hence the ratings skyrocketing.
      The narrative that Russo can't book long-term storytelling is a false one. Austin/McMahon was a long-term story that lasted from September of 1997 until July 1999. The Ministry lasted from October 1998 until June 1999. DX lasted a year and a half. They were 3 main staples of Russo's shows. In WCW he had 2 runs consisting of 3 months and 6 months with a lot of politics going on. While long stories can be good if things are going on and seeds being planted, the opposite can be said if they're just doing nothing for some weeks in order to drag it out. With the Sting/nWo angle we should also remember that they put the title on Luger in 1997 which took the bloom off the rose when it came time for Sting to go over.

    It's interesting when you break it down isn't it?
    Ask someone outside the bubble the following question:
    "A Head Writer works for a privately-held company where he only has to appease one man, and then goes to work for a publicly-traded company where he has to appease multiple people. Where would his writing face the most scrutiny, i.e. filtering?" They would say the latter, would they not?
    So why do people say Vince Russo was "filtered" in the WWE? When you think about it, the reasons don't quite make a lot of sense on a mere company architecture basis. On a talent basis, I would imagine annoying one Vince at that time would annoy the other. But Russo and McMahon split because he eventually gave Russo TOO MUCH to do, and Russo was at his breaking point. Odd. That doesn't sound like something that is being "filtered".
