The Curse of the Giant Yarn Stash | Organizing My Craft Room

  • The good news: I have my very own crafting and sewing room! The bad news: I have to unpack and organize my crafting and sewing room…. I recently moved and got a wonderful opportunity to put together my own creative space for crocheting, sewing, writing, and more. As fun as this kind of project can be, it’s a lot of work! My hobbies tend to require a lot of space and supplies - I have a considerable yarn stash, a paper stash, and a fabric stash, not to mention all the tools that go with those. Trying to fit it all in one tiny room proved to be a bit of a challenge.
    Hope you enjoy the journey as I try to make a functional creative space for me (and my dog) to work in.

    Life long multi-crafter. After two inherited craft rooms, my paternal grandmother "07 and my mom '15, I have transition my creative space into all clear storage or visible. I don't forget what I have, but am more motivated to get it used up. I have always been most drawn to the quaker aesthetic, so it has been a long decade of limited buying. Only buying what I need to finish up a project. I finally feel like I am getting back to the creative space that works best for me. I sew, quilt, embroider, knit, crochet, spin, weave, bead and make homemade cards lol that alone is alot of stuff no matter how simplified one gets. I really hope to pass on my favorite tools and not stash when my time comes. Looking forward to your creative adventures.

      That is a lot of varied crafts, and they all require so many materials and tools - glad to hear your space is starting to feel like "your" space again!

    Oh, I feel you on the yarn stash! I only started crocheting 2 years ago and my stash grew shockingly fast .... also the pile of completed projects I have no idea what to do with and WIPs in various stages of completion/neglect. Our spare room often houses my young nieces therefore not a great place for storage, so the stash is slowly taking over the linen cupboard and my active WIPs are organised on a "craft cart" that can be easily wheeled away when small girls are visiting.

    You did a pretty good transition. Looks great. I moved fron one state to another and had to sell or donate a lot of my hobbies, including beads for jewelry making, yarn that i thought i would not be using in the future, fabric for sewing-quilting, paper crafting and accessories. I really am sad now that i do not have some of those precious goodies. I think it is very important to keep as many happy items close by to assist on enabling a creative mind. Keep crafting as long as possible. It is healthy to have a creative mind.

    Nicely done! I, too, have a yarn vault. It was my daughter's bedroom. I've had an additional lifetime to add to my stash. One thing I want to do is put up solving 18 inches apart or so from top to bottom.

    I have always wanted a room of my own, complete with rocking chair where I can store my knitting wool, ribbon, buttons, trimmings, cotton etc. I love to knit dolls outfits. I would sit in my rocking chair knitting all day (and possibly all night if I can't sleep lol).

    Wood crates. I got the idea from The Yarn Geek. She is a second-generation yarn hoarder...lol! My husband took up woodworking during the Plandemic and I had him build me wood crates. You safely stack them. check her out she has whole walls and it is actually gorgeous. I have 10 stacked 2 high.

    Good job. For greater ease of use, I would suggest sorting the yarn according to either type, e.g. wool, cotton, linen, etc., or weight. Same for the fabrics - if you have the space. I have only the end of a room for all my many crafts, and have found that this helps greatly and eventually saves time.

    Totes and bins are the devil. They say they are for storage but they are only for hoarding. After we moved to a smaller house in retirement that had no basement I sold every single one on Facebook. All my stuff had to fit neatly in closets or cupboards or it was donated. I love my yarn in a bookcase, I can look over and plan projects.

    Thanks for letting us into your space! :) Good idea with those shelves in the closet -- I am going to copy that idea. Can I ask a question? Aren't you worried about moths in your yarn? I never leave my yarn out. Years ago, we "birdsat" a friend's bird for a month, not knowing the birdseed she supplied was mothy. Then there was a major heatwave and the moths emerged! We lost all our wool sweaters, blankets, socks, etc. It was apocalyptic. Ever since, my yarn is in a project bag when I'm working on something or stashed in plastic bags and bins. Labels on the outside.

    • @stitchnfiction
      @stitchnfiction  Год назад

      Oh no, that sounds awful! Gotta be honest, moths are not something I've thought much about before. Most of my stash is acrylic or cotton (which I've heard they're not that into?), but I'm starting to do more with animal fibers, so will definitely be looking into prevention!

    • @infamoussphere7228
      @infamoussphere7228 Год назад +1

      It wouldn't have been the grain, it would have been the bird itself - pantry moths (which eat grain) are different from clothes moths/carpet beetles (which eat protein, which includes feathers, hair and fur leftover from pets.) You might have been unlucky enough to get a double infestation though!
      I keep all my wool yarn in the clear plastic boxes from IKEA - at least if they're clear you can see them, while still keeping them relatively safe from moths.

    • @woollybluestocking3412
      @woollybluestocking3412 Год назад

      @@infamoussphere7228 Thanks for the info -- you appear to be absolutely right! It makes complete sense as grains and proteins are quite different (there's a different type of dye for cellulose (cotton, linen...) and for protein (wool)). I should have thought of it as I knew that bird feathers and nests can have wool-eating moths.
      I'm not surprised about the double infestation; it was the 2003 heatwave in Europe that went from June to August and our apartment was over 40C for weeks. It even went over 50 in there for a couple days! Absolutely unbearable. Everyone you talked to had one kind of infestation or another.

    I am trying to build a stockpile (of yarn) but it’s SO expensive! Where do you get yarn? Do you buy retail (on sale) or do you have a wholesaler?

    • @stitchnfiction
      @stitchnfiction  9 месяцев назад

      It does get expensive! Mine all came from various retail places and was built up over several years. A lot of it came from clearance sales at the big box craft stores. I've also found some good stuff at thrift stores, if you don't mind buying used, but those can be really hit or miss - some of them have great craft supply selections and then others have nothing. 😕 If I need a lot of the same yarn for a big project, lately I've been getting it from Hobbii.com, they have lots of options in various price ranges.
      Best of luck with your stash-building!

    You should totally look into getting legit shelving built into the wall of that closet since you like to see everything!
    Also you don't have to answer if you won't want to but do you have ADHD? People with ADHD lack object permanence, if you can't see it you forget it exists. They are also very forgetful so they forget what they buy. They are also very creative and restless people that often have multiple creative hobbies because they can't keep the same hobby long term and are constantly switching from different interests sometimes going back to the same interests over time. They often get caught up in "collecting" various things as well. Just curious to know but again you don't have to answer that question.

    • @stitchnfiction

      I'd love to get better shelving, but I'm a renter for the foreseeable future so unfortunately I can't do much built-in furniture or storage right now. I'm hoping someday I'll have a more permanent residence where I can get nice shelving. I don't have ADHD - I'm not usually a forgetful person, it just seems to be restricted to my craft supplies!
