Too funny! I'm the person who inherits (from people who are not dead) this sort of yarn situation because the owners have given up and put it in garbage bin liners and walk away. I'm knitting blankets for the homeless and it's deeply satisfying and I'm half way through my second disaster. Go you for persevering

I literally inherited my friends grandmas yarn stash. I can tell you that after going trough black garbage bag full of yarn with that kind of hand turned machine my wrists were crying.
But hey, great to hear that you are doing great things for the world

I love winding yarn! Not only is it really soothing with the mindless, repetitive nature, and the sort of white noise from the winder gears turning, but also it's extremely satisfying. I love the way freshly wound cakes all look stacked on my yarn shelf. Good for you for tackling this mess.

use some hair clippies on your yarn ends to eliminate your loose ends from getting all tangled up. clip them to the wound up balls/skeins of yarn. it really helps by not having all those loose ends getting tangled up again.

I purchased a wooden salad bowl from the thrift store. The salad bowls are so much larger than a yarn bowl that I can use it to hold my project and multiple balls of yarn. I also buy pillowcases to use a project bags. Just thought I would share.
    great channel.

If you want your cakes to be more condensed, you can feed the yarn through your hand to give it some extra tension. I find that it helps with the bigger amounts of yarn. Love this vid! I agree with the totes rather than the bags.

Omg I had a craft room for all of 5 minutes. I put up shelves and had fancy totes and a drafting table and cool lighting and it was near a window and thennnn the baby came. I was like... he doesn't need a room yet, lol. He got the room.

I really like organizing my yarn. I put my yarn skiens in gallon or quart size freezer double zipper bags. The freezer bags that have that little blue zipper that moves back & forth to close or open the bag. It really really helps keep my yarn skiens from tangling & keeps them clean & keeps feom bugs getting in the natural skiens. Then i stick the full yarn freezer bags into strong lid plastic totes. I have lost track of how much yarn i have but i know its organized 😜

A couple of tips. I make 2-3 balls of out yarn that are 7-9 ounces. You can use a scale or just eyeball when it's half so you don't get mega balls. Make sure that you don't wind your hand-rolled balls too tight, especially on the chenille types of yarn. It will make the chenille pull off and lose its stretch. Great video and Thanks for sharing!

And hard agree on your backdrop. From the second the video started, all I could think was that your set is GOALS. But all the thrift stores near me (and there aren't many) are just the worst. Retro kitsch > yarn wall.

Same here. Tackling my yarn stash the past four days. Accumulating over six years. First time. Lol.
Very ambitious of me after recovering from a surgery. Gal bladder removal. Some very late late nights and only few hanks left. But 3/4 bags of full yarn balls after starting with seven. Eep. Any suggestions ? Help!!
Days 1-3 rolling small balls into cakes. Today has been emptying the large drawer.

I know you said you tried knitting once, but I would pick it up again try it again don’t quit. I tried knitting once when I was younger couldn’t fucking get it didn’t understand it and now I’m 23 and I understand that sometimes if you start getting is not a starting point, if you’re going to work with yarn start by crocheting once you get crocheting down pat, your revisit knitting and it become it’s very easy to do knitting becomes easy after you’ve learned and understand how to crochet a lot of steps kind to go hand-in-hand with each other and you will understand and get knitting. That’s what happened with me when I was younger I did not understanding I just couldn’t get it. No couldn’t do a thing, but I understood crocheting that was my great. Grammy taught me my grandma tried to teach me knitting, I didn’t understand it I just couldn’t do it, but I picked up crocheting, and then I crocheted for years, and then now at the age of 23 I went and I picked up knitting. I watched knitting. I have RUclips video just a few days ago and I’m getting an entire blanket for my dog Kirby so and I’m crocheting a blanket for Bella. I’m doing two at one time but if you understand crocheting and you work with crochet, revisit knitting, I promise you you understand knitting pretty damn quickly and easily. If you get your crocheting, and you understand how to crochet will get knitting very easy, I would revisit it again don’t give up and quit on it I would revisit knitting and give it a try. Watch a RUclips video or two net like a little square or something if you’re too confident in yourself and then try to not like a little blanket or something later, but if you understand, crocheting, most likely you’re gonna understand knitting pretty easily your first few rows might be difficult and hard, but if you stick with it and stay with it, your lips will become loose or when your knitting, and pretty soon with the repetitive motion of knitting, you will have it memorized by the end, and do it by muscle memory just like crocheting

I don’t understand why, when it is clearly overwhelming you, that you decide to wind yarn that is already wound up! Just tidy the loose ends! Use the time to actually tidy your stash.
