Part of the reason I know that Yancy loved his brother is the wife's line. "I know what name you want to give him, Yancy. It's okay." It implies that Yancy talked about Fry so much and with such emotion that his wife also agreed to name their child after him. That says a lot.

This episode isn't just his brother missing Fry. This is someone Fry never met, his nephew, being inspired by him. He could have done anything with the lucky clover, and he followed Fry's dream.

Part of the impact of this episode for me was that Fry has so few regrets about leaving his old life behind, it's easy to forget that he had a family who never knew what happened to him. For decades and decades there was a hole in this family, this brother who disappeared on New Year's Eve 1999 and the case went cold (heh) immediately. I know people don't like the retcons in Bender's Big Score, but I do because at least in that universe Fry's family got some kind of closure. And Yancy still named his son Philip. He did love him all along, disappearance or no.

Also from what I remember the show didn't frame it as Fry only having bad memories of him they framed those memories as backstory not flashbacks which is important. Those glimpses into the past may not have been all that those two had of each other and just like many sibling relationships they have their ups and downs. Fry focuses on the negatives when he talks because the clover connected his feelings of resentment for those times Yancy was jealous of him just like most people who get annoyed by somebody they'll only focus on the negative at the time. It couldn't have been all bad between them because it's evidenced that even though they bickered they still hung out with one another despite the rivalry. I know siblings that won't even acknowledge that the other one exists let alone still find the time to be near each other.

I've watched this over and over and over again when it was on Netflix and just now realized Yancey broke the tradition of naming the first born sons Yancey.
Edit: it seems to have been a tradition but Enos (Fry's grandfather) seems to have been skipped for some reason. Thanks canaris4
Yes Enos is implied to be the paternal grandfather not maternal (Fry's mother's father) though it would make more sense.
Possible reasons for this: the writers forgot. But it they are in the clear because Yancy Sr said that his grandfather was the Yancy not his father.
They meant for Enos to be the maternal grandfather and messed up.
Enos was the second born and for reasons unknown it was left to him to carry on the name with his children.

He only had that 1 nice person come into his otherwise sad life, and then he just one day never showed up again. At least his brother understood that he was missing and very very likely eventually came to the conclusion that he was just dead and wasn't coming back. The dog was just alone and really believed he'd be back.

This is my list of best episodes, going from somewhat foggy memory and consulting a list of episodes to look at the titles to find ones I'd completely forgotten about:
      - The Luck of the Fryrish
      - The Late Philip J. Fry
      - The Day the Earth Stood Stupid
      - The Sting
      - Leela's Homeworld
      - Meanwhile
      - The Why of Fry
      - Time Keeps on Slippin'
      - Godfellas
      - Parasites Lost
      - The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings
      - Overclockwise
      - Game of Tones
Not all of them are especially emotional episodes but most of them are and some of them are just very good "essential Futurama episodes".

Futurama made a decent attempt to have an episode for every member of Fry's family that showed them in a better light than Fry painted them out to be. None of them honestly went has hard as this one did but I loved that Fry deep down really loved his mom and Nibbler gave him a small moment to have time with her and how his dad admitted to him that he was kind of mean to him because he truly wanted more for him and he felt the pressure would encourage him.

Honestly, this is my favorite episode of Futurama. Partly because...middle of three brothers, so I get the jealousy and competitiveness and how it can get incredibly personal and want to paint them in a bad light. It usually does take that moment to step back and realize that they DO care. And that ending of Yancey saying "I love you Philip...and I always will" followed almost immediately by "Don't You Forget About Me" always hits me hard with the Feel Goods.

Futurama was such a trail blazer. Before it, there haven't really been animated shows this side of the pond that would combine comedy with raw emotion to this degree of skill and fearlessness, hell, not even golden age Simpsons at it's most dramatic was willing to throw a gut punch like Fryrish or Jurassic Bark; and right after Futurama's first ending, we began seeing more and more shows (specially comedic) both for kids and adults more willing to engage it's audience emotionally as Futurama did like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Steven Universe Rick and Morty and yes, Bojack Horseman. Even more with the rise of binging and heavy continuity.

Don't get me wrong, Jurassic Bark is still a very emotional episode, but not in the way that this is. I cried just watching this video because it's that emotional and heartfelt.
Another reason Jurassic Bark is not the best in my mind is the decision later to have it so Bender caused Seymour's death which sort of diminishes it in a way. I'm honestly surprised that the show runners chose to do that given how the fans felt about the episode.

And if you watch the series in its entirety, you realise that all of the people who truely loved Fri, missed him, and were waiting for him to come home. This is seen most prominantly with Seymor, but you ralize his Mom, his Dad, his Brother, and his dog, the four individulas closest to him which Fri believed didn't care about him loved him and wanted the best for him and for him to come home. Heartbreakingly beautiful.

One of my favorite episodes where I get emotional is Time Keeps On Slippin' where Fry literally moves the stars themselves to finally win Leela's love, but they lost the memory of how it all. Then Fry see's his message, the thing that could win her over again, only to have it implode before she can see it. Shady, I have to say this because it is important: Parental neglect is a sort of abuse. It is important to emphasise that abuse is more than just being physically violent or calling someone names and threatening them. Neglecting your child is abusing them. So, yes, Fry's parents were abusive+neglectful with him in a number of times. I know we are more used to "clearer" sorts of parental abuse (like in Bojack Horseman, with Bojack's parents and Diane's family) but dismissing abuse that is... Less blantat (not sure if that's the right wording, but I think you know what I mean) is very harmful, especially for people who have been through such experiences.
I love the channel, this is a great analysis of the episode, but I really thought this should ve highlighted.
