Funniest moment for me was
“He insulted our fat queen!”
“YOU try keeping your figure after 10000 kids!”
She not lying
@@mysteryace2129fat queen’s big, yeah yeah yeah
Im sick of shakin my booty for these fat jerks
It’s true, but you shouldn’t say it.
The worse thing about Futurama is that it lulls you into a false sense of security with its comedy, then beats you over the head with feels when you least expect it. Its also the best thing about Futurama. These episodes are an "odd man out" so to speak and it makes it that much more sincere when a show like this does drop an episode that hits you in the feels.
When Leela says 'I'm so scared Fry, I don't know what to do.' It really takes everything in me not to burst into tears.
The VA genuinely sounded like someone who was completely lost in fear and distress, it's a line I always go back to if I need to think of a pained voice line
@@LowReedExpert1her name is Katey Sagal and she is a FANTASTICAL actress no matter what she plays in.
Watching Futurama after i saw her in Son's of Anarchy( where she plays a villan) i didn't even know it was the same actress.
@@user-pi3hd2bt3fshe has such a dynamic range also she's still sexy it's the voice that does it for me
They even nailed having Fry's voice hoarse from talking to Leela for two weeks. This was an amazing show.
That’s why Billy West and Katey Sagal are geniuses. I even consider the latter as the hero, ‘cause she ALWAYS provided incredible dialogue for Leela no matter how shitty the writing was.
Yoooo wat even is your profile pic???
@@kazumak.1542 it's a drawing of a long haired shirtless dude with a bushy moustache and big nose.
@@kazumak.1542 nigel thornberry forgot which episode that was though if any
It's really cool because 1) you can see that she was stung (there's blood on her belly and her shirt was ripped) when the bee attacked; 2) the toy (which you covered); 3) the sleigh ride scene is shown in the picture behind Fry in the hospital; and 4) she IS wearing Fry's jacket, just like when she 'woke up' in the coma dream. These creators don't mess around! BTW, great video!
"You could use a shower."
"You too."
Left out my favorite joke from the episode
Great vid Shady, you’ve covered my 2 favorite Futurama eps haha
Another big thing that stands out after me watching this video repeatedly, Leela is alone, like Fry. Her family is known to her by this point, but they can't be here to support her. Fry knows what it's like to have no one to rely on. He is determined to stay with her and make sure she's not alone.
This episode made my head hurt but in a good way. It was rough trying to imagine what it must be like to be stuck in a hallucination only to wake up in *another* hallucination and another after that. At what point do you wake up to reality? What even is reality at that point?
I love the way this episode explored that
When you stay awake for 72 hrs at a time...trust me it gets trippy
I've had vivid dreams like that. Definitely scary.
@@GhostlyFyre I've experienced such times where I'd have no sleep at all for one or two nights in a row, then in a mad test of endurance (e.g. for a party) I would attempt to stay awake for the next night but instead succumb to dozing off multiple times at different points throughout the night. Eventually I would feel so groggy that it becomes difficult to remember what was real and what was dreamt. Time feels like an illusion.
It's as effective as dropping acid or snorting a tonne of ketamine.
I have dreams like this often. I wake up, walk around the house, find out I'm late for something or have a very real feeling conversation, then something will happen that is out of place (aliens come to my front door, a dead family member is just casually hanging out on the couch like no big deal, one of my kids is younger than they actually are) and I'll find myself back in bed.
I'm coyote Peterson. And im about to enter the sting zone. With the giant space honeybee.
The cicada killers are quaking
Mark: U ok?
Mario: I think he's dead...
I love Fry's attempted sacrifice. Leela still ended up getting stung and Fry ended up being fine, but it doesn't diminish his sacrifice at all because that's not what he thought would happen. When he faced down that bee, he really thought he was going to take a hit for her and get stung and end up in a permanent coma or even just die.
One running gag throughout the series, and played with in the episode "Farewell to Arms," is Fry trying to do noble acts of heroism to save people, mostly Leela, but ends up causing more trouble, which was also the case here; if Fry hadn't tried to protect Leela from the wasp, she would've gotten impaled and would need immediate medical help, but she wouldn't have ended up in a venom-induced coma. Then again, there's no way Fry could've known that beforehand, and perhaps he stayed by her side, not just out of concern, but also guilt for letting her get stung.
4:57 imagine being bender looking at poisoned knocked out leela and a mortally wounded fry
They did the "honeycomb big, yeah yeah yeah" thing in _Family Guy,_ too. I always assumed it was the cereal.
Yes yes yes! This is my favorite episode!
I'll be waiting patiently for a "Game of Tones" video still
Thank you so much, ive been an avid futurama stan since i was in 6th grade, and not many people get it on this level. This is one of those episodes that always brings a tear to my eyes, thanks for doing it justice! Looking forward to the next one
I came here because Sting is one of my favorite episodes of the series. The others being Reincarnation (The one with the old cartoon, video game, and anime variants of the characters), The Farnsworth Pandora Box (The universe boxes), and the Final episode of the show. (Can’t remember the name of the final episode)
Futurama was one of my favorite shows back then.
frys wearing a space suit but when he falls in the jelly hes spitting like its in his mouth when its not.......
He’s stupid
"I'm going to guess it has something to do with the cereal..."
You got it. Back in the 80s and 90s when there was Saturday Morning Cartoons, ads for sugary cereals were EVERYWHERE on TV. And "Honeycomb big! Ya Ya Ya! It's not small! No no no!" was the catch phrase of that cereal.
The best part about this episode is when the bee says "dont put your eurocentric standards on me!"
Oh yeah I remember when I first saw this episode just how surprised I was throughout the whole thing. It's just so well-made and so well done and so well put together
Futurama having so many gut wrenching episodes full of heart and warmth to share both sides of a potentially traumatic event and how to help work through it like in this episode where Fry never gave up
9:30 more disturbing than the unknown, is distortion of the familiar
And damn that last scene recap still almost got me grillin
You've gotta have massive respect for shows that can take an instant groaner of a trope like "It was all a dream" and actually squeeze some life out of it.

The toy is a Panic Pete he is a vintage stress ball.

Wonderful retrospective by the way I really enjoyed.
I really like your video style. It makes me wish I was more into BoJack so I could appreciate more of your videos
I love that it seems like the only shows that reference the movie “the sting” are produced by Matt Groening
I always thought that the honeycomb thing was a reference to the same cereal. Dont worry, bee happy.
It's funny considering that this episode was foreshadowed in the first episode when the professor gives them their careér chips
As a kid I wondered "How are they gonna bring Fry back?" Cause main characters never die
I never really understood until I got older how all of this worked and boy it hit me like a freight train
Yay! I love Futurama! Also your art (character guy) has gotten a lot better.
it does sting in the feels... but the episode that really twists the heart... the dog
god damn man, every time i see the final few scenes i burst with tears
"Get out off here and don't come back until you learn what status quo means"
Tbf they have brought people back from the dead in other episodes.
Thanks for making me a barbecue cook off with all this grilling
This episode me cry, actually. Between Leela's guilt in her dreams and Fry not leaving her side is amazing.
The ring tone is horsing around
I was today years old when I learned that Leela did wake up with Fry's jacket.
I just noticed that fry was apparently buried in the same graveyard as his nephew. Funny bit of continuity there. Yet it's portrayed like only important people are buried in this graveyard so it could have been lelas subconscious making the association between death and "Phillip j fry" to that graveyard.
Edit- okay so I just wanna throw this in here as an interesting aside to "losing her mind even in a dream state" that's very possible, there's an interesting story of a young man who got hit in the head while at college, while he was unconscious he made up a wife and 2 children lived through a great deal of their life together even, when he came to only around 15 minutes had passed while in this dream state this man started to lose his mind over a red lamp in the living room, when he awoke he had to go to grief counseling to get over his loss (that of his non-existant wife and two children) the whole story is wild and I highly suggest people read it. Needless to say it gave me reason to worry about people in comas and their mental state while in that coma, I don't know if you can lose your mind and come back from that or if waking up only makes it worse.
To be fair to Leela she also took the baby queen because with it they could possibly set up their own hive to negate the need for dangerous missions like that one in the future.
yesss this episode doesn't get talked about enough and it's had me ugly crying since childhood
5:50 i think Chester a Arthur was there bc fry worked at the head museum that one time...
"From chester a Arthur to chester z Arthur"
Bro. That was the jingle for honeycomb BIG. Which was in fact honeycomb cereal but big.
The barbecue references for having the feels was killing me lmao now I'm gonna use it so I don't have to talk about my feelings
The honey come being big sounds like a baby got back reference to me
ok, we all knew he was going to come back somehow
but we all definitely thought he died
Your brojack videos is what brought me here but I stayed for you man! You and all your wonderful videos! Please keep it up!
Shady your futurerama reviews are excellence ✨️
one cannot simply resist doing another Futurama video
the oldest trope and they got us
My grill has brats... And a steak for this episode.
Damn, that Honeycomb joke makes me feel old. Haven't watched the youth channels like Nick/Disney/CartNet in a long time, so I'm not sure what Honeycombs ad campaign is these days: but back in the day they had this little hairy monster that did the bit like Hermes (yeah yeah yeah!!).
Anyways, you do you. Making money on this platform is great, but don't let the need for money dictate the content you try and make. We love you for your insights that you bring to us, not the insights that we demand of you (though it is beautiful when both those things line up, eh?). Much love, best wishes, cheers!
Also Not 100% Sure, You can google it, but I remember hearing this episode Winning a Grammy... !
I really like her voice acting, specially in this episode
I went to get my phone when your ring note went off, I've the same one
"Light up charcoal". You're so funny, Shady. Sigh.
I can't believe...these are magnificent! I hate cartoons more than everything. Except my husband likes these from time to time. I can now open up to seeing their value.
I just have 1 question. HOW did Fry consume the honey through his helmet? He clearly has protection over his face
You look older then me how do you not remember those honeycomb ceral commercials lol as yes thats exactly where it comes from
You didnt mention that Leela was wearing frys jacket when she woke up in the hospital
Futurama ftw
Just keep doing Futurama IDCshow needs more attention today and you are a good channel.
I agree.
Shit man imma need more propane after all that grill use.
Do the new futuram episodes with ciff and Amy’s children
Ugh. This episode always has me grill up a mean steak.
i hope you make one on Game of Tones.
I burned a lot of charcoal while watching this episode too man.
This episode was thefirst episode that made me cr-I mean fire up my grill
The fact that Fry stayed by Leila's side honestly is comparable to what Seymour did in Jurassic Bark, just waiting and hoping, only here it ended happily.
AEC Media
Oh my God I never thought about it that way. And now I’ll never forget!
At least in another timeline Seymour is happy-
@@evey8178 technically the same timeline, though 10^36 years later.
STM oh yea
i knew you'd pull through as leila credits fry after broke me as a kid...
Another consequence, is that it was from this point forward, that Leela started taking Fry seriously as a romantic possibility.
Finally!
That's a good point, and I'm glad (not trying to be negative) that it wasn't out of him actively trying to win her love this time. It was him staying with her for two weeks just to keep her alive.
@@birthdayfruitecake8158 So true, and I’m glad it wasn’t one of Fry’s gimmicks that ultimately made her take him seriously-it was just him being himself and wanting to be there for her, even if there wasn’t supposed to be a chance she’d recover
So true 😅
Nah, that was established one season earlier during "Parasites Lost". It's the first time we hear that Fry is interested in Leela and subsequently, the first time she is interested in him too (albeit briefly).
Everyone: You can't make "it was all a dream" work!
Futurama: Watch and learn
Wish Lou2 was all just a dream... oh... and alien 3
I used to read “Word Up!” magazine
Also Inception
There's an old sitcom that I can't remember the name of where, I think the father dies during one of the later seasons, and the series finale is that his death was all just a dream.
Futurama: GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE!
So glad you did another of these 😃 I've been re watching Futurama in the last week too by coincidence 😁 always a pleasure, Shady
@kristian rikardsen i dont get it
Hey Strider do you think maybe you could do a top 5 best classic futurama episodes?
What's up checkmark
Can you please make any futurama list
Hey strider! Since this is a pretty small comment of yours, i was wondering of you could make a updated version of your rick and morty list. since there have had 3 more full seasons since that list
What i like most about this episode is that it shows just how deep Fry and Leela's relationship is as it blossomed throughout the series!
just like the original finale..it just works because of the build up ...the only thing that makes me mad is how fry and amy had sex...that makes it hard to believe that fry is such a loser ...he should not be able to pull that off
@@razkable It suites her character. She want to be the opposite of everything her parents expect of her. Basically a loser in spite of her actual status and genius. She's also attracted to the opposite of what her parents want. I mean look who she ultimately married in Kif. A scrawny "beta" type.
@@razkable doesn't amy sleep around? Wouldn't be hard to believe she did fry.
Scalyess Flare
Yeah and Fry and Leela are like Robin and Starfire.
@@razkableFry isn't that hopeless in getting women while he might not be the most intelligent guy his heart's usually in the right place sometimes remember when he became Lars who had all the qualities Leela wants in a man, He's the type of a guy who will change himself just to be worthy of the woman he loves that woman being Leela not Amy or any other girl he's ever dated only Leela pushed him to be a better man
Another great thing about it was how it's one of the few times a Leela-centric episode addressed her growing feelings for Fry. Most of early Futurama was about Fry's schoolboy crush on her, with her either ignoring or being receptive of his advances, only for something to ruin the mood. Then there's this episode, and Leela's actions show just how deeply attached she's become to Fry, even though it's long before the pair actually took their relationship seriously.
I never actually picked up on Leela’s whole dangerous animal, now it’s mine, thing until you said it. It’s almost a core personality trait. Did the worms in Fry count towards this as well?
Yes
Yes most definitely
"Humans" will pack-bond with anything.
I mean they did actively help dry stay fit and healthy as well as improving his mental capacity
Kind of, I don't know, they weren't dangerous, they were actually super helpful.
3:01 - It was a reference to the old Honeycomb cereal jingle from the '70s.
Thank you!
true story: after having been in a coma (pulmonary issues a decade ago) I can't watch this episode anymore.
it's amazing how much external stimulation gets through to those in a coma. they are NOT dead or unaware
Many coma victims remember their loved one's voices during their dreams. Some of them asking them to "wake up" like Fry did. Keeping the brain estimulated is a good way to help it back into activity
I remember reading an article from a recovered coma patient. At one point he was able to walk while still in the coma. It was interesting how many levels of consciousness we actually have.
Unpopular Opinion:
Futurama > The Simpsons
it's pretty popular
Anyone whos actually watched through Futurama and The Simpsons multiple tiems have this opinion.
Futurama is more % quality but I think Simpsons has more quantity of quality (because of the sheer amount of episodes)
It's because Futurama is close to early Simpsons in terms of quality of writing. The Simpsons has been garbage for at least the last 10 years now so of course it's not gonna be comparable to Futurama who actually got a good ending instead of being milked and beaten forever.
It's been popular since 2009
So basically, for the future, if you want to write a "it was all a dream" story you need to make the consequences more personal and mental for it to work.
And actually be consequences, not just jokes.
And it doesn't always have to be a cop out. I always hate it when they use this cliche as way to resolve everything.
They have no explanation of what happened or how it happened. Nor do they know a way to resolve it. It's basically a "Get out of jail free" Card.
Also sometimes adding an "....or was it?" twist can raise more questions. Sometimes, it works. Sometimes, it doesn't.
Now, sometimes the cliche can work if it's used to teach the main characters a lesson.
For example, in the 80s TMNT episode "Shredderville", after Shredder got away again, the Turtles were fed up with all of it wished that they were never mutated to begin with. They fell asleep and woke up to find their lair in shambles and NYC under Shredder's control because they were never mutated. After all the chaos ensued, they woke up again only to find everything back to normal. And this nightmare taught them a lesson to think twice before wishing they were never mutated.
@@kidprime6863 The two main types: cop out & it's a wonderful life
@@kidprime6863I'm gonna go see if I can find that episode and watch it.
Sounds pretty neat.
There’s a Darth Vader comic that shows this pretty well, where it shows him overthrowing Palpatine and going to Obi-Wan for forgiveness before revealing it was just a force vision of his. It works because you obviously know that it’s not real beforehand so it’s not just a cop-out, but also that Darth Vader is strong enough to do so and the only thing stopping him is Palpatine’s influence over him.
I'm totally cool with you doing a bunch of Futurama episodes.
Give in to the temptation!
I remember watching that episode as a little kid and I was traumatized, but not because I was scared of Fry's death or the twist, I was just scared of never feeling love like the one they did when Leela actually woke up. I was a weird kid lmao
Poor kid...
I don't think that's weird. As a life-time obsessive shipper, I STILL worry about this! I mean, not that specific example, but... Yeah, they're definitely a pairing I felt and that stuck with me, I'll say that much.
I watched this as a kid too. I was traumatized by the first time I saw Zoidberg.
Bee
Happy
Not weird at all! I think it shows you were a very emotionally intelligent child, and that you were able to relate a piece of media to your own life.
The only good 'it was all a dream' plot.
I think pointing out that wanting to have somebody stay by her side is a really important here since it's a central aspect of the Fry--Leela dynamic. Leela having been an orphan and having nobody else (at least early on) is an important part of her character development, and seeing Fry stay with her through that (toward the end of the series' initial run) feels like an important end to that arc.
3:00,It's a old honeycomb cereal commercial. "Honeycombs big, yeah yeah yeah, Its not small No no no". We are old people.
Nooo don't say we are old! Lmao
Damn this episode made me want to do a whole barbecue
What does that mean, please?
One thing I loved about this: I got that the stinger went through Fry and Leela got the poison right when it happened, but the rules for the honey made me disregard it.
It's supposed to be mad honey that's where they got it from something that actually exists
This was actually my first episode of Futurama!
Mine too!
Mine was Naturama lol... I was very confused to say the least
Same!
Mine was That's Lobstertainment 😂
Same
"PROFESSOR! Can't you examine my brain without removing it?"
"yes, easily"
that is the most Professor Farnsworth thing anyone can say.
Seeing tired and disheveled Fry is what gets the waterworks flowing for me
But there’s nothing in his voice but happiness-he doesn’t show how tired he must be, because Leela’s awake so it doesn’t matter to him. You love to see it
They managed to perfectly balance the sadness with a few minor, silly jokes lightening the tone. I think the reason people don't consider this episode as emotional as Jurassic Bark is because the writers chose (correctly, in my opinion) to not go all in on the drama, otherwise it might've been too intense.
- Starting the ending scene with Bender's sassy "You've killed Fry."
- "I've tried, bed sores hurt!"
- Fry's surprised face when he realizes Leela is awake
- "Vroom, vroom!"
- "Like a parrot of the sea, he was!"
And when we were all already bawling our eyes out, the "You could really use a shower" dialogue.
Truly masterful screenwriting.
Even though you say we've all seen it before, I really like how you take the time to avoid spoiling things too early. It makes it feel like we're all watching it for the first time, because you slow us down to appreciate all the connections and links between the episode's scenes. It's a great way to embody what you said about it having re-watch value.
You gotta love Fry spitting out honey that didn't leak into his suit.
Also, this episode was so good that it inspired the punk band Atomic Raygun Attack to write a whole album based around it: ruclips.net/video/dzKscG85Sic/видео.html
Damn that's dedication to the episode.
the plottwist of this episode really broke my mind and i needed some time to process what happened... the episode already felt like a fever dream and then they just throw that plottwist and i just wasn't ready at the time
and now rewatching it here gives me chills everytime fry says "wake up"
The episode feels a lot longer than it it's thanks to that
12:15, that's a good point. I think it's common, some will say too common, of a whole situation being a dream and as I saw/heard from you, the actions and well execution of an idea can make a story good, even with a tired out troupe. Also I loved your barbecue talk, that's some added sweetness.
Whenever Katey Sagal(Leela) gets emotional, you know that’s when the tears come.
To be fair, futurama started in like the 90s, it's the future of the 90s
Im also questioning why fry trys to spit out the queens honey out of his mouth even though hes wearing a space helmet which should be air tight. (I shouldn't think to much of it cus its cartoon)
He’s stupid
@@neonwaffle3327 even thought hes saved earth mutiple times but yea bout 89% stupid
