The actor that played Wesley has explained that this movie was a failure in the theaters and he was having a hard time finding other acting jobs. One day he was going to auditions in New York and stopped in a diner for lunch. He ordered a hamburger and the waitress asked how he wanted it cooked. He answered "medium rare.". She smiled and said, "As you wish." This was how he learned that the movie was becoming very popular on video tape.
The scene when he noticed the six fingers on the right hand ended with a sword hilt bopping him on the head. He was not acting. The hit actually knocked him out. The stuntman's sword had not been switched in time for the actual steel sword used for closeups.

Actually it has a more humorous story to it. When they were trying to film the knockout shot, they had to film so many takes because the fake hit just never looked right. Soon enough Cary Elwes(Wesley) talked Christopher Guest(Count Rugen) into actually striking him in the head, so the timing and the reaction could be properly sold. And that hit is the last thing Elwes remembers before waking up in the ER getting stitches put in.

Andre the Giant, the man who played the giant in the movie was a well loved figure in America at that time. He died a few years after this movie came out but is still beloved to this day. The woman that played Buttercup speaks of him very fondly saying that once the cast went horseback riding on an afternoon when they weren't shooting and got caught in freezing rain. She said that he noticed her shivering and put his hand on her head like a hat. She said that the heat from his hand warmed her up surprisingly well and made her feel safe.
He was also a very famous wrestler. His real name was Andre Rousimoff, but but earned his fame as Andre the Giant.
His back was constantly sore by this time, so he had to wear back braces. Still, I think it was still him carrying the others up the Cliffs of Insanity.
Andre was and still is a legend.

ive seen interviews where wrestlers tell stories about how Andre would be in his dressing room and when someone anyone walked by he would call out for them to come watch the movie with him. I got the feeling that he was very proud to have been in this

A bunch of actors, including Rob Reiner - the director if this movie, created a fan-made version using their iPhones. This led Hollywood to float the idea of remaking this movie, to which everyone said "NO".

@@galpeleg143 i completely agree, but we're on the cusp of something better, i think. The butchering of the tail end of GoT taught Hollywood what NOT to do. And i think they're finally paying attention a little. The Suicide Squad was a fantastic film with fantastic writing, The Mandolorian was very carefully curated and it showed, and LoTR is making a comeback in pop culture because of the 20th anniversary last December.
His Dark Materials on HBO is the BEST example of an adaptation I've ever seen in my life😍💀. They botched The Golden Compass (book 1) YEARS ago so badly, i thought Hollywood would never ever touch it again, like a taboo. But it's being made by fans of the book, and they wanted it done with respect to the source material. Even with the minor changes they've made, it's so good i wanted to cry out of sheer gratification.
Don't lose hope. Lol. But thankfully, i think The Princess Bride is safe from remakes, even if Hollywood does get the hang of it. I don't think anyone anywhere would pay to see it. It wouldn't market well and they'd lose money. 😆

There are some movies that should never be "remade" under any circumstances because they are perfect the way they are. This one is at the top of that list.
This movie knows exactly what it is and has no regret for being a somewhat cheesy, action packed, romantic fairytale playing off of the old damsel in distress stories it was based on.
Not to mention that the scene with Billy crystal and Carol Kane was entirely as-libbed!
The only way this movie should ever be remade is if Fred Savage is the grandfather, and all the book characters are played by Muppets.

I agree 99.99999...% HOWEVER....
Someone pointed out that this is, arguably, The Most Remakable movie. What we see ISN'T the story from the book, but the child's INTERPRETATION of the story as told by the grandfather.
They suggested that Fred reprise his roll, but as he is now. His coworker (female POC?) says daughter is still sick at home, passes on the book.... and the NEW movie is from the little POC girl's perspective. All the characters would reflect HER expectations and hopes and fantasies.....
And that concept is the ONLY one I will allow to be made, ever.

The Princess Bride is one of those "must see" movies regardless of your age, gender, creed.
It is pop referenced all the time, and introduced the concept behind "Dread Pirate Roberts" which was referred to on NCIS.
And it's just so well done with awesome characters.
The concept of the dread pirate Roberts comes from the real pirate Bartholomew Roberts. He commanded what is considered the largest pirate fleet ever at over 400 ships.

Dread Pirate Roberts was the deep web username of the founder of Silk Road Marketplace (AKA the "Black Market"). I believe once he was caught he was sentenced to multiple life sentences for drug trafficking and arming terrorists or something extreme like that. Probably the reason it's on NCIS. Haven't seen the specific episode but I'd guess it's got to do with cyber crime.
@@stephenr3827 Bart Roberts really was one of the deadliest pirates ever...and had lots of odd habits for a pirate. He drank huge amounts of tea, and never allowed his crew to be drunk--probably one of the reasons his crews were so deadly. He ended up dying by a lucky British cannon shot that took his head off at long range when about to attack.
Also Dread Pirate Roberts was a name also used by Ross Ulbricht, the operator of the Silk Road, the site allowed for the anonymous buying of drugs and other illicit things. He was basically a modern day pirate that eventually was taken down by the FBI in 2013. He is not a great guy, and did some crazy stuff before he was arrested like ordering a hit on a a dude after he was scammed for good amount of Bitcoin.
Movie came out in 1987... and thanks to a HEAVY rotation on Cable-TV it has impacted an entire generation of little kids, who grew up and showed their own children this movie just to be able to see the movie with "young and fresh eyes once more" and falling in love with the movie all over again. I now know some grandparents who show this movie to their own grandchildren and sit back and enjoy it as if it is the first time they are seeing it themselves, JUST by watching how their grandkids react to the movie. This is truly a "timeless classic" of a movie.
We had Scholastic study guides because it was shown in schools.

I've said this before, I saw this movie in the theater when it was out. Although the "as you wish" line is justifiably credited to Cary Elwes, it was the Peter Falk interpretation at the end of the film that made this film iconic. When I saw it in the theater and Falk's line played at the end it brought the house down. I'll never forget it.

"Anybody Want A peanut?" This is one of my favorite movies. The dialogue is just as perfect as it gets. Never gets old and always puts me in a good mood.
The one thing I love about this movie is that it takes the typical fairy tale formula, but it adds a new twist, with it being carefully constructed to fill so many film genres. It also mocks the cliches found in these stories.
There’s very few movies that I consider “perfect” and Princess Bride is definitely one of them! A timeless classic ❤️
The actress who played Buttercup also played Jenny in Forrest Gump.
And Antiope, Diana's trainer in Wonder Woman :)

Fun fact: in the novel, Guilder and Florin are described as "between Germany and Sweden". Know what's between them? Denmark. And there's a region that during the 16th-18th centuries was actually a lot like the description of both kingdoms (though obviously neither existed).
Guilders and Florins were the coinage of two Renaissance cities in Italy, so while they weren't two nations, the names were from the right era.
The cliff they are climbing is too high for it to be in Denmark 😜

This is probably my favorite movie. It's brilliantly written and marvelously acted. Wesley's duel with Vincent is one of the things I find most impressive. As soon as Vincent agreed to the duel, he proved that he wasn't as smart as he thought. He had lost the battle before it even began.
I love how after she expresses how she couldn't stand not doing something to save his life, you get the very obvious double cross so you think her actions DIDN'T save his life, but, in realty, since it was her marriage to Humperdink being broken up that got Miracle Max to raise Weasley, in the end it was entirely her descisions that saved him.
The epitome of childhood classics. One of those films seen so many times that people can recite the entire film from heart, word for word.
This is a movie that ages well. Infinitely rewatchable. So quotable

11:36 If you didn't know Magy, Peter Diamond and Bob Anderson were the stunt coordinators who trained for the fencing scenes in this film. They also trained and did the choreography for other films like Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Zorro, and many more movies from that era. If you were a big fan of their action scenes or if you recognized the action from other movies, it's because of them.
12:39 Fun fact: Bob Anderson was hiding up there out of the camera shot, caught the sword that Inigo throws up when Wesley hits it up out of his hand. He had the sword, let them get into position, and then dropped the sword from above so that he could catch it while they cameras continued filming it in one go and then they go back to dueling.
Yes, and Bob was also the fighting double for Darth Vader in V & VI. He even had a speaking role in V before the Battle of Hoth.
This is such a great movie on all counts: it's romantic, funny and action! The chemistry of the entire cast makes this movie so believable too. They all got along so well together, there's a lot of great backstage stories of how well they meshed together :) A couple of cool stories is how Cary Elwes (who played Westley) and Andre the Giant would go out to restaurants together to eat and drink. Andre's version of "a drink" would be a huge jug of a concoction of different alcohols together and wouldn't even get drunk until several of those.
Also at 24:23 you're correct, that was a real-life OUCH!! The actor actually hit Cary Elwes (Westley) on the head by accident and he was knocked out cold, which is why it looks and sounds so real!! Because, it was!! :)
A testimony to acting skills. Peter Faulk did a "pick up" for that last line of the movie. Meaning that they had to go back and film it again for some reason -- sound, lighting, re-write, not the proper camera angle, whatever.
And yet, filming it without anyone to work off of, nobody in the room to really give him any kind of visual or audio cue, he NAILS the delivery so well that the feelings of a grandfather telling his grandson "I love you" comes through crystal clear.
Easily one of the best lines to end a film.
Peter Falk was fantastic in "Columbo" detective movies.
Actually, I'm wrong, I mistook him for someone else, who WAS a little rascal.

One of the best movies from the 80s and an absolute classic. Another movie you should react to if you get the chance is Ladyhawke, another classic movie from the 80s

I watched Ladyhawke not too long after it came out and loved it. Many years ago, I should watch it again after all this time. (great cast)
When the pandemic hit, a slew of actors started making their own home-made versions of The Princess Bride. Someone threw a Supercuts version with 88 actors playing out the movie in their own backyards. A search on RUclips will pull them up.

A little gem of a movie hard to fault. Director, cast, cameos, soundtrack, screenplay and script all brilliant. Still popular after all these years. And who better to share it with than our precious Magy?
You've seen Deadpool 2, so a little fun fact. They released a PG-13 version Deadpool 2 where they completely parody the storytelling parts of this movie but instead of the grandfather it's Deadpool, and he's tied up the same child actor here all grown up.

Yes to Flight if the Navigator and Neverending Story. For kids’ movies with a different vibe, I would also add Secret Garden (1993) and A Little Princess (1995).

Chris Sarandon was amazing in it as Humperdinck, I remember he was on the original Fright Night as the main antagonist who happened to be a vampire

The Giant was played by Andre The Giant, a pro Wrestler. A sweetheart. A legend.
After my Father saw this movie whenever my Mom would ask for something he'd reply with "As you wish", so that part always gets me, especially at the end of the movie.
This has always been my family’s go to movie to quote! We quote it all the time so I love seeing people seeing it for the first time!
Andre, though a true, real life giant, was considered one of the kindest men.
I've never heard a negative story about him.

All time classic!!! Pretty much the perfect movie, the blend of adventure, humor, fantasy, action and love story is phenomenal. The reason prince Humperdink looks familiar is they modeled the character of Lord Farquaad from Shrek after him.

Cary Elwes as Westley is so very dreamy. Windswept flaxen hair, brooding eyebrows, subtle dimples, rose petal lips, and eyes like the sea after a storm...
I liked the reaction apart from one part. That part was when you referred to haters in the comments, that made me sad, somehow I never thought you would have any.

I was one of the lucky people to have watched The Princess Bride when I was young in my country. I had the pleasure of inviting good friends to watch it for the first time over the decades. And seeing someone watch it for the first time is always a treat.
This is a classic, one that my father and I (of all people) quote to each other all the time, “kissing book” or otherwise. 🙂 So happy to see you watch this! You are a lovely soul, Magy, for all your commentary during this reaction! Never change 🙂
The author of this is William Goldman. He also wrote Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, my favorite movie ever. Check it out.
He also wrote my favorite Western comedy, Maverick.
The big guy was Andre the Giant, he was a very famous wrestler. Sadly he had a disease that made him grow to such a size. He weighed 500 pounds and that made him to suffer severely from joint issues near the end of his life. Jake the Snake talks about how it was being around him because he was a decent dude but felt bad because everyone stared at him. Also said how it sucked because they traveled from town to town for wrestling and the hotel room beds and toilets were not made for a man of his size.
He also holds the record for most beer drank in a single sitting at over 100+ cans of beer. He would drink a lot and during the filming of this movie he passed out in the hotel lobby but because no one could lift him they had to leave him there till he woke up. Also during this movie when he went drinking they had a police group go with him to make sure that he didn’t stumble and fall on anyone.
There is also a story of him with Arnold Schwarzenegger where Andre would always pay for everyone because he was one of the highest paid entertainers during his time. Arnold said he was going to the bathroom and tried to sneak and pay for the meal. Andre caught him, lifted him up and carried him to the car setting him down on the roof of the car and then went back inside and paid for the meal.
Andre the Giant truly was as nice in real life as he was in this film. He should've had more screen time outside wrestling rings.
Sadly, by this time his health was so bad that he couldn't do much more. He actually had great difficulty with this role because his back was so bad.

@@Pecos1 Playboy Buddy Rose was more my era, and I actually went to school with Dutch Savage's (Frank Stewart) daughter. (I didn't know her. She was a couple years behind me.) But I was never a big fan of wrestling.
@@tarmaque I wasn't a huge fan of wrestling either, but I did on rare occasion see it on TV. I only went to one live match when I was 11.
@@Pecos1 In the 70's when I was a kid my Grandfather used to stay up to watch Portland Wrestling late on Saturday nights. I rarely stayed up with him to watch, and even if I did I'd usually fall asleep. Later in the late 80's a friend of mine talked me into going to watch live. Watching live was a lot more fun than watching on TV, but not enough for me to make it a habit.

When Count Rugen hits Wesley on the head with his sword, it really did knock Carey Elwes out. Read the book "As You Wish" by him for tons of great stories!
Did you notice that Westley never blinks during the whole movie? I think he does once, by accident, but the point is that this character never blinks his eyes, and this does have a subtle but palpable effect on the audience, I think.
No one would blame you if you did watch it again. Anytime it plays on cable or what have you people watch again. It's a classic.

When this popped up on my screen, I couldn't stop smiling! One of my all time favorite films, shared by one of my all time favorite channels! I'm so happy you liked it!
Cary Elwes is a huge talent (Days of Thunder, Glory, Twister, etc.) but his comic roles have always been some of my favorites. You should check out Robin Hood: Men in Tights sometime...it's more of the same type of fun as this movie.

While I am crazily obsessed with the parody and I don't really find the Kevin Costner movie memorable, I've noticed that people who watch Men in Tights today, who haven't seen (or heard of) Prince of Thieves, tend to miss a few jokes and not get the full sense of the parody.
Cary is a hoot as the uncle of the Prince in 'Ella Enchanted (2004)' - a Cinderella-like story.

Another movie with Cary Elwes who plays Wesley that you might like is the Mel Brooks romantic comedy “Robin Hood Men In Tights”.

Such a great film. I even remember dressing as Westley for Halloween in 1992. Even to this day, I still end up re-watching it every few months.
My favorite movie of all time. And the grandfather's "As you wish" at the end always makes me tear up a little.
Fun personal fact: Back in the 90s, my girlfriend (who is still one of my best friends) and I were huge fans of this movie, quoting lines back and forth to each other whenever they'd fit in everyday conversation. It confused people a lot when we were out together and I'd say something was possible because she'd always say "Pig" right after I said "possible" just like in Westley's last conversation with Humperdinck. We'd laugh and other people who hadn't seen the movie would just stare at us like we were crazy. 😀
Second fun personal fact: When one of my best friends, James, was getting married I was his best man and another friend of ours, Alan, and the brother of the bride, Brian, were groomsmen. We were at the rehearsal for the ceremony and at a moment when the minister was flipping through the book Brian just says, "Mawwiage" like the priest in the movie and James, Alan, and I burst out laughing along with Brian. The next day during the actual ceremony none of us would make eye contact with each other because we knew that if we did we'd think "Mawwaige" and burst out laughing again. 😀
A truly perfect movie. Is it an action movie? A family movie? A date movie? A romance? Yes! Endlessly quotable and enjoyable!
I watched this movie because some friends told me about the awesome sword duel. I watched it so long ago that I had rented it on VHS tape. When the movie started with the grandfather and the kid, I thought someone had switched tapes (I knew I was going to get in trouble). I was so relieved when the real movie started.... whew!

Andre the giant was literally that tall because of his giantism disorder acromegaly he was also that strong. He was literally a WWE superstar who was induction ceremony I n the WWE hall of fame in 1993. He died at only 46 years old. A gentleman and gentle person with a heart of love unconditional

The first wedding I officiated was for a couple of friends of mine. They're both fencers (and former fencing coaches), and there were a bunch of other fencers attending. Of course I had to start the wedding with "MAWWAIGE! Mawwaige is wot bwings us together today."

If you like romantic medieval stuff from the 80s, I'd be interested to see you react to Ladyhawke, which is an old favourite of mine. Beautiful to look at, silly in places, but with Rutger Hauer being brooding and hot, and Michelle Pfeiffer being ethereal.

I love 'The Princess Bride.' It's very well written and acted, and almost every line is quotable.
24:21 A little fun but painful fact about this scene. They couldn't get the scene right. After numerous takes, Christopher Guest, who plays Count Rugen, wasn't able to make the scene where he knocks Wesley out any good. So Cary Elwes, (wesley), suggested that he make it look better by hitting him for real. That shot of him actually dropping his fist on his head knocking him out was real. Cary really did get knocked out and it looked real enough that it was in the final scene put into the movie.
I've been watching this movie for decades, and I'll tell you that I think it is a perfect movie. It is funny, entertaining, it doesn't take itself serious, and is everything the director wanted it to be. Loved your reaction, glad you shared with us. Peace.
I've seen this movie many times. The lead actor, Carey Elwes, is British and he did make a few more movies, none of them as good as this one. It has become a cult classic. I've seen Carey in interviews over the years, and he is a wonderful and happy human being, which is the best kind of success. I can't tell you how much fun it was watching this again with you. You are such a happy person. Thanks.
He also shows up in several episodes of Psych as the thief Desperaux. He's one of my favorite actors and he clearly loves this movie. He wrote a memoir about it called As You Wish that has some great stories, especially about Andre the Giant.
Fantastic movie, here’s my favorite bit of trivia about it. Rob Reiner, the director of this movie, also directed This Is Spinal Tap, a mockumentary about a fictional rock band, Spinal Tap. He plays the director of the fake documentary, Marty Di Bergi, and wears a specific navy baseball hat throughout. When making The Princess Bride, he approached Mark Knopfler, the guitarist for the band Dire Straits, to do the soundtrack. Knopfler jokingly said he’d only do it if Marty Di Bergi’s hat was included somewhere in the film, which Reiner managed by putting it in the grandson’s room. It’s hanging near his bed in the opening scene.

The guy who plays the Spaniard got tired of trying and failing to make the part where he's knocked out look convincing so he just told the other guy to hit him for real with the hilt of the prop sword. The knockout looks so real because it was real. He was in fact knocked out cold in that scene. He woke up in the hospital with a concussion and a very worried costar.

The guy is Mandy Patinkin who starred in TV shows like "Chicago Hope" and "Criminal Minds". He won 3 Golden Globe awards.
I believe you’re thinking of the wrong scene. That story is about Cary Elwes (Westley), not Mandy Patinkin, and it was the part when the Count knocks him out with the sword after the fire swamp. 24:23

This is my go-to movie whenever I'm sick in bed. I remember being a kid stuck with a fever and my mom would move me to the living room couch and play this VHS. ❤️

That's the late great Andre the Giant who stood 7'4" tall and weighed over 500 LBS. He was the most famous wrestler of all time.
A timeless, wonderful classic of a film. I think Magy, you were swept along by the adventure and the romance of it all just as much as the little boy listening to the story was!

I love this movie so so much. Being a kid in the 80s was so magical. So many legendary fantasy and sci-fi movies. The part when Inigo is praying breaks my heart as an adult now. “I have failed you for 20 years.” Little does he know, his dad’s heart would be broken that he wasted his life on revenge instead of living his life w love. 🥺🥺🥺
