Agreed. I interpreted it as her husband trying to put what he thought was *her* emotional welfare first. Because he seems to have expected her to just emotionally break down, be overcome with grief and guilt (as she was clearly showing when she stepped out of the car). He almost certainly has also had to be there for her while she dealt with Chuck's presumed death and the effects of that loss on her. I don't think he was without empathy at all, either for her or for Chuck, but, since she's his wife, he obviously puts her first.

During the plane crash the red thing that you thought was food and stuff that he had to leave behind was actually very important, it's a transponder. It sends an emergency signal that people can use to locate people when they are stranded in the middle of the ocean or on an island but because it got left in the plane and sank to the bottom of the ocean, people searching for survivors wouldn't be able to receive the signal and that's why he wasn't rescued

I didn't grasp the full significance of Wilson the first time I saw this movie. It took me some time to piece it together. The full emotional significance of Wilson extends from the innate, pathological need most human beings have to see another _face._ Even a face that's _clearly_ not a real face is preferrable to _never ever_ seeing _anything_ facelike.

Alan Silvestri is one of the best composers in Hollywood and this is the film in which he is used the least. That goes to show that the most important decision in the soundtrack process isn’t necessarily what the music will sound like, but when not to use music. Magy’s right about how different it feels without the music while he’s on the island.

I really like this ending, particularly the two metaphorical and symbolic messages at the end. The more obvious "crossroads of life" where he has to now choose which way to go and the second not so obvious is he is now in a place so far from water, essentially farmland. So far from where he spent his life while he was stranded on the island. Almost the opposite.

Hey, Magy. I loved this movie. It was so incredible. Tom Hanks does a superb job of carrying Cast Away all by himself for about two-thirds of its running time by never straining for effect, always persuasive even in this unlikely situation, winning our sympathy with his eyes and his body language when there's no one else on the screen. Although, there was no music playing in the background, until Alan Silvestri compose at the half-end of the film through the sad moments. Yes, I felt emotional, I miss Wilson, and I felt sad that Chuck and Kelly can't be together. But anyway, it was amazing great film, with emotional that makes you feel happy, and so sad. great reaction to another wonderful performance by the awesome Tom Hanks, and I love how you analyzed the themes of keeping going even when there seems to be no hope to be found.... and how even after making through such a trying time and only to find that what kept him going was ultimately lost to him and at the end found a glimmer of hope that fate may have placed and yes, we all were very attached to a volleyball back in the day... and if memory serves, I think that for a limited time, the Wilson sports company made a limited run of volleyballs with "Wilson's face" printed on it! Awesome as always, Mags! And as you know, there are a lot of Tom Hanks movies, but one that might interest you that is a bit different and might be the first movie I recall with him as the lead character is "Bachelor Party", as it is a bit on the cheesy comedy side, but iirc Tom was still great and very young as I think it was the first movie that he was the main character... and at the time he was known more for his comedic acting....

"Castaway: A New Hope". George Lucas version but he digitally updated the original film. Replaces the volleyball with a giant sea turtle, who has goofy faces and burps when eating but teaches Tom Hank's character how to fish. Lucas wanted the giant sea turtle originally but the FX at the time weren't good enough. Digitally added a dormant volcano as well to give the island more heft. For some reason, people preferred the original.

Great reaction, Magy. The lady he meets at the end is the late, great Lari White, who was a fine singer. I recommend her album "Green-Eyed Soul."

On at least one occasion after the release of the movie, the director had said that the "mystery package" actually contained a waterproof, solar powered Sat Phone. Pretty funny.

Bettina ( The Red Head) plays a very prominent role in Chucks story . You caught most of the Easter Eggs Magy .
In the beginning it shows Dick and Bettina's name on the sign at the ranch then we see Dick with another woman in Russia , now " Whats in the box " Chuck hands Kelly a box does it have a ring ? Probably but he doesn't ask her to marry him his last words to her " I'll be right back " On the Island the watch with Kelly's picture gives him hope - inspiration to keep going , to keep fighting .
After his rescue when he finds out Kelly is married his demeanor changes there's no doubt He loved Kelly very much and she him but at her house when she opens the refrigerator door " Bam " there it is right in his face pictures on the fridge door of Kelly with her new family in different family situations this why Chuck tells her in the car you have to go home he knows he can't be the reason to break up her family , this why when he's talking to his friend he say's I've lost her all over again he knows their relationship as a couple is over , then he says " I know what I have to do now. I've got to keep breathing because tomorrow the sun will rise. Who knows what the TIDE could bring ".
As Chuck is delivering the Angel Wings package he looks at the sign at the ranch Dick's name is gone It's just Bettinas . Kelly's watch had given him hope but he gave it back to her , but on the package he writes "This package Saved My Life " After Bettina gives him directions as she's driving away he see's the Angel Wings on her truck, as he's standing at crossroads by his expression you can tell it's beginning to click . It was Bettina that the TIDE had brought to him all along via her package , It was Bettina that saved his life via the package . It was his fate that he find Bettina .

when this movie first come on it showed a fedex driver picking up a package from the lady that was sending it and it showed her in the work place making one so if you go back to the beginning you will see her making a metal stem with leaf's that hang on a wall for decoration

I think the reason they ended the movie when they did is because now Tom Hank's character is no longer powerless; he had the power to choose where to go, and at least one path that might lead to another relationship, if he decides that's what he wants. Romantic saps (like me, and maybe you) want him to follow the wings, but he's free to choose as he wishes.

whats more amazing is tom hanks had to gain about 50lbs for this role, then they had to stop shooting for a 1yr and 4months while he lost a lot of weight and grew a beard to look so skinny. no cgi in his weight transformation.
