  • Here's the finished atlatl and dart!
If you like picture tutorials, check out this build on Instructables.com: www.instructabl...
Hey everyone! Today we're going to be building an atlatl out of PVC plumbing pipe. This is one of my favorite styles of atlatl to make, inspired by the atlatls of the Basketmaker culture of the American Southwest and the atlatls of Mesoamerica. It's a nice flexible atlatl that works great and once you get a hang of it, can be very accurate with even shorter darts.
We're also going to be building a two piece takedown dart to go with our atlatl. The takedown connection is also made of PVC pipe. This is a great dart to get started in throwing with an atlatl as it's long and flexible, making it very forgiving. It also comes apart for storage and transportation because a six foot long dart can be a little awkward.
We'll be building this atlatl here as well as in an Instructable. When making the dart, we'll fletch it with feathers here and with duct tape in the Instructable.
I hope you enjoy the little bonus at the end. Thanks for watching!

Aloha Nick! Have to admit, year ago I was almost wtf about your pvc stuff :) But your videos are a.m.a.z.i.n.g.. Specially stuff about atlatl and atlatl darts. I was inspired by your videos and since I've couldn't found pvc pipe of appropriate diameter I've simply joined 2 poplar dowels using scarf joint and wrapped it by sinew. It was hell great. Was surprised after i understood why neolithic man used it successfully. My first dart broke in the air right before joint more than likely due to inapropriate hitting with thrower but after week of throwing it. Hazel is great but pvc things are quicker, cheap and longer lasting. Now I gonna searching for pvc and your book on bows (awesome cool stuff even i am into composite bows). Keep on rockin'!

I tried to make your shoehorn atlatl yesterday, but managed to screw it up by twisting the plastic too much. I did make a 2 meter dart out of fiberglass rod with duct tape fletching that I can throw about 20 meters by hand alone though. Now I will try this PVC atlatl and see if I can get it to work with any accuracy. Thanks for all the videos and hard work, Nick. (^_^)

I throw the same way but my atlatl has a much shorter handle. This allows for more follow through and a bit more power in my opinion.
