  • Here's how to make the takedown dart to go with our Basketmaker style atlatl.
If you like picture tutorials, check out this build on Instructables.com: www.instructabl...
Hey everyone! Today we're going to be building an atlatl out of PVC plumbing pipe. This is one of my favorite styles of atlatl to make, inspired by the atlatls of the Basketmaker culture of the American Southwest and the atlatls of Mesoamerica. It's a nice flexible atlatl that works great and once you get a hang of it, can be very accurate with even shorter darts.
We're also going to be building a two piece takedown dart to go with our atlatl. The takedown connection is also made of PVC pipe. This is a great dart to get started in throwing with an atlatl as it's long and flexible, making it very forgiving. It also comes apart for storage and transportation because a six foot long dart can be a little awkward.
We'll be building this atlatl here as well as in an Instructable. When making the dart, we'll fletch it with feathers here and with duct tape in the Instructable.
Let's get started building a PVC atlatl and dart!

Nicholas,.. a wood drill bit has a v shaped tip. like a 1 inch It's like an Indian drill, pinch it and twist.
If I made one out of PVC Id put a T on the end and glue it then add some pipe on each side and heat it and flatten it then bend it at 90 degrees drill two holes in it run a string through it, then cut nocks in the darts.
They say you can get 6 foot cane tomato stakes at lowes and home depot, some farm stores sell imitation cane fishing poles made of fiberglass that work too.

You can use a pencil sharpener to taper, the ones used for the construction pencils do a really great job. Feathers from Joann's fabrics come in a good size, you might be able to find them at some Walmart still, or Michael's crafts, and then I like using Dacron/ nylon fishing thread for fletchings, most stuff you can get from the pro bow shops, you can even get a rig that we use for wrapping eyelets for fishing rods, go to Lamiglas in Woodland, see you're in Camas. Thanks for posting. :) cool deal.

Great tutorial! A lot faster than straightening river cane. Plus the take down aspect is brilliant. Found you by way of TJack.

Another tip : that piece of half inch PVC pipe . Take some sandpaper . lightly sound down the Flathead of both ends of a half inch pipe. Create a smoother transition. So that that flat age of the PVC pipe. Doesn't create a drag. Making the arrow more aerodynamic

on a side note if building this atlatl and dart doesn't work out so well for you the scissors double as a large melee weapon. only watched a few videos but i really like your work and hope I'm on your side for any apocalypse.
