    Yeah I know primitive and PVC is sort of an oxymoron, but you all know how I like working with PVC. One way you can support my videos is to support my sponsors, and thanks to Dollar Shave Club for sponsoring this video! Check them out here: www.dollarshaveclub.com/nighthawk Also thanks to Nick from BackyardBowyer for letting me use his footage and show all of you his atlatl design! My sport teacher at school showed me a way to improve javelin distance, it was just thick string (paracord will do), tie a single knot in one end, wrap it around once so when you pull the string forward the knot jams up, when you throw it the sting easily comes away from the javelin, the taper of the javelin stops the string from slipping.
    For your spears you would need something firm behind the fletches, just a ring (pipe coupler section)

    Last week I attended a seminar included in the German voluntary services. On thursday morning we had a few workshops including one where we could make an atlatl using only a pocket knife. For the spears we bought a few wooden rods and just cut the tip into shape before hardening it in a fire. Finally, we made a small hole in the other end for the atlatl to fit in and added feathers and a bit of ornamentation. For the atlatl itself we searched for a stick in the neighbouring forest, removed the bark and made a few modifications so that it is more comfortable in your hand. And surprisingly, it actually worked rather well!
    It really amazed me that the stone age people managed to build something like that with basically just sticks and stones.

    The little details in you vids make them so good, like the dishing of the conduit tip and then cutting a slice out of the pvc to slip the conduit over it. Simple but clever its awesome!

    I used to make these as a child, a weighted at the front garden cane, with cardboard flights. The throwing device was a knotted shoelace wrapped around the shaft. Could get them to go easily between 120 - 150 feet (just measured on google maps). Took a bit of practice before you could do it without the lace slipping, but great once it worked.

    I have the same kind of bird. Her name is Sunny. She is quite lazy though. She won't fly no matter what even though she can. She just sits around and occasionally falls off her branch on to the floor and won't fly back up. Instead, she climbs branches, decorations, and anything else she can climb on to get back on her branch. I still love her though.

    Have you considered using 4' fiberglass driveway markers as darts? You could warm up a piece of slightly smaller pvc pipe and slide it over the end for a nock. They're cheap and readily available. I think they'd work well because they'd be lighter and more rigid than larger diameter pvc pipe.

    • @Nighthawkinlight
      @Nighthawkinlight  7 лет назад +1

      That's a pretty good idea, you would just have to find something else to use as the head. You could probably throw a very long distance being as small and light as they are. They may not be stable with a big ball of steel wool on the front though for that same reason.

    would you get better accuracy if the entire pipe was steel and unflexing? Or does that add too much weight? it seems to me that all that wiggling around would make it to unpredictable. Is unflexing even a word?

    • @Nighthawkinlight
      @Nighthawkinlight  7 лет назад +7

      Possibly you would have better accuracy, but you would need quite an arm to throw a long distance. If you watch slow motion archery videos you'll see that even carbon fiber arrows wiggle around in the air like this, it's just an exaggerated effect with these spears since they are so long and CPVC is especially flexible. Also because the head of the spear is quite heavy, but that is necessary to keep the spear stable in the air.

    • @FelixUmbra
      @FelixUmbra 7 лет назад +2

      Maybe add fiberglass rod to the inside of the pipe to add stiffness and a little weight.

    • @coolsammichherohunter6248
      @coolsammichherohunter6248 7 лет назад +12

      The archer's paradox allows for these and other arrows to be accurate even though they wiggle. It's all about math

  • @trevorjenglish
    @trevorjenglish 7 лет назад

    A slight modification to this. It would be cool to mount a 9V battery in the throwing handle with connections at the tip. Then you could run connections from the dart to the steel wool. This way, you could simply pick up the dart, begin to throw it, and the steel wool would light automatically

    so i have an idea for a probably unstable version of a fire dart, my version would be to have the tip of the dart steel wool than have in the same pipe that you had covering the end of your arrows a glass canister of kerosene glued in and behind that by a few inches a ball bearing that is snugly but not securely put in place. the idea is that when the arrow hits the steel wool is still burning and the ball bearing comes out of that was holding it breaking the glass and makeing an explosion of glass and kerosene. aside from being extremely dangerous what is your opinion on this design nighthawk?
