Fun fact: The animation step up you noticed in "Mindful Education" is because Takafumi Hori, a Japanese animator who worked on stuff like Inazuma Eleven and Lupin the Third, was a guest animator and director on the episode.

10:29 the revelation about the Temple having rooms for fusions (so long as they exist) is really ironic, because of COURSE they do! Garnet’s a fusion, and she has her own room in the Temple, and to be fair we’ve never seen separate rooms for Ruby & Sapphire, as we have for Garnet, Pearl, and Amethyst. It’s a really cool thing in hindsight, because it was always right there, but it never came to mind until Sardonyx mentioned it herself!
I always thought the burning room was Ruby’s, given that fusion rooms only exist with the fusion. Unless Garnet’s is different somehow.
When Garnet opens the door, the red and blue gems light up. There were a lot of hints about her being a fusion in season 1, but that was the one I noticed that maid me go "wait a minute what's going on here" and start paying attention for other clues.
It's subtle but I always loved how after Stevonnie's first appearance the gems treat Connie like family.

Like how Pearl didn't even think to clear sword training with her parents. All she thought was, yeah you're one of us now and if you want to take on the role of Steven's Pearl I'm here for it.
Then there's how supportive/thrilled Garnet was about the whole thing.
Even Lapis and Peridot didn't even question why Connie was on the squad when Steven and the other gems were off in space.
Then Bismuth reforged Rose's Sword for Connie to wield it easier.
I just really enjoy that they never specifically call attention to it. Especially since Connie had a strained relationship with her mom but she could be herself whenever she was with the gems and Greg.
I always wanted more Connie-centric content because I found her dynamics with the main cast more interesting than a lot of the faffing around town we got with Steven.
@@MuffinHunterXAgree, we did not need so many Sadie and Lars episodes. Sadie isn’t exactly a bad character she’s just boring compared to the rest. I didn’t care much for Lars until Season 5 (like most people). I wish they could’ve used those episodes for something better like exploring Connie’s relationship with the gems more

22:37 , and Mindful Education as a whole, focuses on the topics of Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and OCD and intrusive thoughts, the last which are represented by butterflies. The more painful and paralyzing dealing with them becomes for Steven & Connie during this episode, the stronger the distortion on the instruments in the score, evident by the distorted guitar synthesizer, like around 25:13. Steven & Connie also begin using techniques that are assigned to deal with anxiety, namely breathing exercising, and not allowing the thoughts to consume you, but facing them head-on, and recognizing they suck but they’ll come and go, like a swarm of butterflies… At the very end Stevonnie even says, “I’m here”, both a call back to the lyrics in the song, but also part of what people use to recenter themselves after a really trying episode. “Here Comes A Thought” is one of my favorite songs from Steven Universe!
Fun fact, when Steven and Connie fused for the first time, we saw the exact same thing happen when Kevin approached them at the dance and invaded their "bubble". We see it happening during the race with Kevin aswell (the road crumbling behind them and them unfusing right after). Basically every time one of them (or both) starts feeling a strong negative emotion, it causes an imbalance in their fusion, therefore they start seeing things, just like in this episode. I think it's a very clever foreshadowing which helps explore the mind of a fusion!
My take away from this last episode is the identity of Steven biggest trauma : Rose Quartz, his mom, and how she wasn't like he imagined her. It's a big theme of the series, deconstructing your hero or your family. It will keep on adding on until the end and even in the movie and Future. I love that they go so deep into Steven psyche. Poor boy was never allowed therapy.
the fact that the main thing heightened by the smoky quartz fusuon, the main thin steven and amethyst have in common, is their self loathing??? hurts. that hurts.
Yep! Idk if the guys picked up on that one but WOOF that was rough. They literally said “us worst gems stick together” right before they fused, which is why Smokey’s design is a bit off a mess (affectionate)
Steven has expressed many times he feels inadequate or crushed beneath the pressure of living up to his mother, but Mindful Education is in my opinion the first sign that the cracks of that pressure run so much deeper. And perhaps come from a place of doubt, conflict - if her memory is a much greater legacy than the person she actually was.
"I can't wait to see him fuse with Garnet!" "You think? At that point it'd be a triple fusion." Yeah... Just like every Garnet fusion... Like Sardonyx... Heck, Alexandrite is a quadruple fusion.
Peridot is legit so durable, I honestly expected her to get poofed in episode 1 so she could get a new form

Mindful Education was actually Guest animated by Studio Trigger. Apparently they had a lot of fans if the show and proposed a collaboration.
It still kinda floors me that they were such fans that they basically mashed the LWA and OKKO universes together. Well… more or less. Ian and Rebecca in LWA and Luna Nova’s existence in OK KO is close enough!

Also, the song "Here Comes a Thought" Is based in an actual meditation practice. Its to help settle emotions and calm anxiety. I have actually put it on with headphones when feeling really awful and it helps make you not as anxiety ridden about everything and does help.
I love how each fusion has their theme remixed to be in the style of a big band talkshow in "Know your fusion"
The Kindergarten Kid episode is freaking hilarious. It's a parody of Wile E Coyote and Road Runner where Peridot tried to get the corrupted gem monster multiple times

- “Kindergarten Kid” is an obvious homage to Wile E. Coyote & the Road Runner cartoons even doing a fade-to-black transition between scenes imitating the Looney Tunes style, but there are other references to:
- The Corrupted Gem bubbled at the start it’s roar sound affect is from Varactyl from Star Wars
- Peridot says, "I'm smarter than your average Peridot" is play on Yogi Bear’s catchphrase
- Peridot pinned under the boulder while her legs are out = Wizard of Oz
- “Know Your Fusion” is the 2nd episode to break the 4th wall with the first being “Say Uncle” (which isn’t canon), but Sardonyx Tonight is a parody on late night talk shows even with Sardonyx tapping pencils on the table like David Letterman
- Gem Battlefield and the Pyramid Temple are revealed to be located on the real-world Scandinavian peninsula
- Notice one of Rose's lions had a heart-shaped nose while the rest had triangles hinting to being out Lion
- In “Mindful Education” has some sequences made by Japanese animator Takafumi Hori who also did Summer Wars, Little Witch Academia, Promare, Lupin the Third: Fujiko Mine's Lie, & many more
- Connie & Steven holding their hands together as they fell is a reference to Ghibli film Laputa: Castle in the Sky

The part when Xardonyx says if they still have to pay Sugalite is actually a fourth wall break, referring to the voice actor of Sugilite, they didn't call her for the episode, but still used clips of her voice they had recorded from before for it.

"Here comes a thought" is such a wonderful song. I know multiple people who use it when they're dealing with panic attacks and anxiety. It's calming and centering, simple and beautiful.
11:56 This is actually a very good joke, Sugalite's voice actress is Nicky Minaj, and the price to use her voice in the series is high so that's where this joke comes from, which unfortunately only works in English
I love Mindful Education, it's probably my favorite episode of the series and DEFINITELY my favorite song.
The stuff about them sabotaging the show was pretty close actually. Cartoon Network has a history of canning shows that they feel dont have enough of a merchandise market, primarily action figures and boy related toys. Teen Titans was cancelled for this reason as it had a lot more of a teen girl audience than they anticipated. So they didnt know how to market it like they planned. Rebecca Sugar fought tooth and nail to keep episodes, to keep seasons, and to keep content in the show that the network fought her over for years.

Mindful education is my favorite episode. The message is so deep and important. The song really helped me when i was struggling. And it's all shown in such a gorgeous animated episode. I love the visuals and the song is so beautiful♡♡
what Peridot said makes complete sense considering she’s a kindergarden specialist (if that’s what all peridots are made for) so not being able to poof easily would be good for the job

Episode 4 is one of my favourites SU episodes ever! The song is catchy and meaningful, the lessons are great, and any episode with Garnet is a great episode
What makes the joke about having to pay Sugilite even funnier is that she's voiced by Nicki Minaj, who's (jokingly?) speculated to be the most expensive cameo in the series.
I’m finally early! Peridot learns a thing or two about corrupted gems. A great season!
I love how the juxtaposition between Connie and Steven and Ruby and Sapphire foreshadows Steven’s breakdown later in the episode. Ruby - the more fighting oriented of the 2 - runs off chasing a single butterfly because it gets to her so much, while Sapphire is drowning in a hoard of butterflies. Steven’s problems run a bit deeper and are a lot less solvable than the one which was tearing Connie apart in this instance.
I like to think the lion buddy put his head in was our lion because Steven did the same thing when they first met

OHHHHH it's here mindful education is such a good episode
Mindful education reflects how Garnet usually deals with everything. Ruby being the strong aproach and stubborn side, focus on one problem and Sapphire is left overwhelmed by all the other problems they have to deal as Garnet, if one side of the fusion is troubled the fusion breaks, but that's why the other side is for, in the end both side have each other and the problems of one are the problems of both, is something Steven and Connie had to learn. Connie, like Ruby, got stuck with one problem, when Steven, like Sapphire deals with way more problems than her in probably a daily basis.
Love that you picked up the homage to Roadrunner in Kindergarten Kid straight away - the monster even has the same colour scheme as the titular bird and sticks its tongue out.
Some say that the "4th wall breaking" is a Sardonyx power tied to garnet's future vision
the fact that the title Kindergarten Kid sounded so sinister but then it just turned out to be a Looney Tunes inspired episode

Finally Kindergarten Kid! :D The Road Runner Show was one of my favorites when I was a kid. When this episode was released, I was laughing so hard that I almost choked. Seriously, I was literaly crying from laughing, even more with some edited videos that I found later with the R.R. theme.
I liked Peridot before, but after this she became one of my favorite characters ever. ^^

Out of all the trauma Steven's gone through he was fine with most of it because he hadn't hurt anyone. But then he had to, he couldn't stop it even though he tried, and he was just suppressing those feelings but they where the ones lurking in his mind at all times, making him questions everything and worry about if he would hurt again. Especially after finding out "perfect" rose quartz was a shatterer.
He's his own person but i feel that during this time he's still caught on that feeling of maybe he is his mom? and hes following in her gemsteps but hes probably starting to worry now that hes going down a path he doesn't like, one that could lead him to being forced to do shattering. And that is the last thing poor steven wants to have to do to anygem.
