My take on the Onion hate is that people are using completely different definitions of favorite. The Onion gags, like the mask here, or the random fires, or the scootering over ketchup packets are all genuinely fun in an unpredictable sort of way. But he's also really mean. Stealing things, trying to unsettle people for the sake of it, manipulating them into giving him a second chance, generally being a menace. Some people focus on Onion for the gags and love him. Others focus on what it would be to like to have to interact with someone like that, and hate him. Personally, I do both. As a gag, I love him. As a person, he's an abominable little stinker who I wouldn't give the time of day... until he convinced me that it's just his way of expressing himself and I wake up the next morning in a bathtub of ice. Edit: Didn't realize it was Onion Gang this video. Definitely a time he's shown as a bit more relatable and less of a menace.
Fun fact, Mr. Smiley and Mr. Frowney are said to be "obviously lovers" possibly being ex-husbands on the concept art book Rebecca Sugar made of all the characters, and there was meant to be some more development and an episode where they got back together which is really cute and I'm sad it didn't happen

There’s a fantastic old post-apocalyptic Miyazaki anime called Future Boy Conan starting a ridiculously strong boy who lives by the ocean with an elderly survivor of the old war and has no friends until he meets a girl his own age named Lana on the beach surrounded by gulls. There’s a picture of Connie by Steven’s bed dressed as Lana, with a seagull. I love all the little homages in this series.
_major series spoilers referenced below_ Its really cool to me that a lot of these "nothing" episodes establish things for later. The pizza dream episode and the Lars body takeover episodes establishes Steven can enter other people's dreams and see things from their perspective / their internal struggles, so the episode with Stevonnie as Pink Diamond in their dream doesn't immediately alarm to the twist. This future vision episode establishes that the future vision can lack context, so that the future might actually turn out a different way than seen, which adds additional "garnet isn't all-knowing" to further prevent any plot holes that could've cropped up in the future, and also is a teaching moment for Steven and his conflict resolution skills. The party episode sets up Pearl beginning to embrace moving on and establishing a life with humans rather than just kind of existing in proximity to them, and sets up Pearl getting a phone... which becomes plot relevant for the reveal. I know some fans found the beach city chill episodes frustrating because of how whack the airing schedule was, but on a binge it really works well because its suited to developing Stevens character, foreshadowing, and planting plot devices. It also lets the show cement it's tone as being hopeful and optimistic, setting ample precedence for prioritizing emotional resolution and a message for compassion and growth... which justifies it's ending as being the idealized, hopeful message of a better way and working on a better future (on fixing what's been broken and working to put good into the world), rather than going a more gruesome and arguably more realistic ending
