- Opening in 1989, Magnum XL-200 is the original hyper roller coaster. Located at the legendary Cedar Point amusement park, Magnum XL-200 stretches through the waterpark and alongside the beach of Lake Erie. This roller coaster is very polarizing in the coaster community. Some consider one of the best coasters on the planet, while others think its bottom of the barrel trash. Well, in this video, I'm ready to provide you my complete honest review of the oldest hyper coaster in operation!

The first time I went to CP in 1989, it was a foggy morning. When we caught our first sight of Magnum, the fog obscured the top of the lift hill so that it looked like it went into the clouds. It was a great first impression.
Imagine visiting a park in world where you simply can't hop online and have their entire coaster collection spoiled. Thanks for sharing!

I wish I had ridden this when I went to Cedar Point late this summer. We always get Friday's and Magnum is near one of the entrances but we didn't ride it. Much sad.
Honestly, I think it is the 2nd best ride in the park. And a trimless ride on it is unforgettable

@@scottyjbd they have it off usually when it is colder out at the end of the season most of the time. And it is pretty rare. I’m lucky to have ridden it trimless in the front and back

The janky, turnaround bank left turn is my favorite part because if you're not expecting it, the people on the ride suddenly get scared and put their hands down because it really does sound like you're literally about to fall off the tracks lol

Magnum is an easy #2 in the park for me and still my favorite hyper. Yes, it is flawed, but the magic seat is so violent, and unlike anything else I've rode. And if the ops give you room, which they usually do, it's such a fun ride.
This ride was a rough ride
But the violence doesn't make it good, it's real pain, that's not something you should be praising...

What's to complain about MXL is a classic and I used to Love the Jank 🙌🏼😉
The biggest advantage that people rarely talk about with magnum, is the line, or lack thereof. Since it's a relatively niche appealing ride, unless its an incredibly packed day, it's nearly always a walk-on. This makes it great for when you just want to get some thrills quickly, without having to wait an hour or more for the bigger rides, and i probably end up riding magnum more than any other coaster simply due to this.
I go every year and it's the same for us. No Fastpass needed

I love magnum definitely not my favorite but in1989 this thing was huge. 13 yo me at the time had only been to geauga lake was just amazed by this thing!
raving ridden Magnum over 50 times during the 2022 season (including with the trims off) I can confidently say this is my favourite roller coaster at Cedar Point

While I love Steel Vengeance, Maverick, and Millennium, Magnum is my favorite coaster to marathon.
I look forward to this ride every time I go to Cedar Point, and I’m excited to get more rides on it this coming Monday. It’s my second favorite hyper coaster, and is in my top 3 at Cedar Point.
A trimless ride at night in the ejector seat is a whole other experience. The ejector on those hills is absolutely insane. Also I have ridden this ride hundreds of times but I still love it because it seems to ride differently every day. It's steel coaster with the feel of a wood coaster and that why it's one of my favorites
My no 2 in the park and one of my favorite coasters despite not having ridden in the magic seat or back. The airtime on the final hills is so violent it feels like you’re about to die, and it has a lot of those old, lovable bad Arrow transitions.

Got 2 rides during my Cedar Point trip; It feels like a crustier version of Steel Force; I rode it for the historical significance. Maybe I'll have to ride it a few more times in the future to form a better opinion.
Before I watch, I vote goat! I got 4 rides last time, its finale is right up there with Phantom in my opinion
Magnum ranks in my top 5 at Cedar Point. I always ride in the back car because the magic seat wasn't that magic for me.
At the time yes. I was there the year it opened. I was 9 years old, and for some reason scared to ride it. Next year, it was the best ride experience ever! I mean i grew up with idlewild and lakemont park, so this was a tad bit different. Does it suck these days? I still ride it when i go there, but at my age now, its a bit rough. Never a line which is always a good thing. Haha
It’s just uncomfortable. I even tried the infamous “Magic seat” last time I visited, but it still just hurt.

I have easily over 150 rides on magnum and it is a definite legend! Front row, back row and magic seat are the only 3 to ride in! The magic seat has incredible airtime and the night rides are awesome as well!
If they changed the trains on Magnum it would shoot up in my personal rankings. The restraints are wayyy to painful for me to even begin to enjoy it, love the jank but god those lap bars kill my thighs.
LOVE Magnum! My number 4 in the park. The only part I find painful really is the pretzel turnaround 🥨

Great video. My first ride on it was 2019, both my wife and I was in the magic seat. The first half was fun, but the second half to me was so janky, I felt like I needed a chiropractor when I got off. To me, steel vengeance air time wasn't janky and fun where I can reride it. Yes magnumxl200 is the first to reach 200 feet, but I feel something new should replace it, like maybe a new b&m hyper.

I really love the magnum. It delivers great views of the lake and it looks great in the location it sits, but my only problem is it’s very rough and can leave you with a headache 🤕. I don’t know which ride was more brutal magnum or Kennywood’s Steel Phantom 1991-2000

Went on it in 2019 worst thing I’ve ever been on. Came back last week hoping to change it since people find it enjoyable but no. It was still awful I was in pure pain whole time.
I absolutely love this ride, it is my favorite, and even though it's jank makes it fun for me, I would not mind a few upgrades to make this ride more accessible, to smooth it out a bit. It may make more people like or even love it.
Magnum was the tallest at CP for 11 years. The best rides were at night when the crowds would get noisy and rowdy like a bunch of NFL fans, whooping and hollaring with their rhythmic claps and chants. Great times!
1. Yeah it has those janky Arrow transitions. But to fair, Ron Toomer didn't have CAD to work with in 1988. From what I've read, he would bend wire coat hangers and paper clips for the design process!
2. Magnum still has high ridership; last I saw for 2019, it did rank 5th among the Cedar Point coasters in terms of riders.

One of my favourite roller coasters! I think Magnum is a fun ride and it is such an iconic part of roller coaster history.
Even though this guy doesn’t trash the ride, he still somehow finds a way to come off as a stick in the mud.
I enjoyed this ride the more times I rode it. At first I thought it was ok, but now I really like it. I think it's around 5th in the park for me. This ride is strange to me because it seems like each time I rode it, I liked it more each time. It is unpredictable what experience each ride will be, and I can't say that about any other coaster at Cedar Point.

1st few times I went to CP in late 2000s, I loved this ride. I went back for the 1st time in many years this summer. I'm to old for this ride now! It hurt. I think you are 100% spot on, those hills at the end make or break this ride.
I am so impressed that your daughter was 6 when she rode this! But then again, when I was a kid, my parents were both afraid of big coasters so it took me to the ages of 9-12 to discover my love of coasters since I often had to journey them on my own (I had a few cousins who'd ride with me and my aunt, but they weren't always there). I absolutely LOVE that your daughter is riding this legend! I only rode it once, way back in 2004, but we're planning an Ohio coaster trip soon. Gotta keep these 40 year old bodies conditioned to riding the best coasters. I remember it being a bit janky too, but I'll still go for another whirl for sure!
Magnum is very polarizing for me personally. I've hated it on 2 visits and loved it on the other 2. On my visit in July, I loved it more than ever, especially in the magic seat. But even with that, I can't understand how anyone can consider it an elite coaster by today's standards. I rank it somewhere around the 70s, where I have most of the B&M hypers, and it's my 7th favorite at Cedar Point.
I remember waiting hours for Magnum the year it opened, but it seemed so huge at the time that it was worth it. Now, it's still fun especially since it's tends to be basically a station wait. I just avoid wheel seats. While the "magic seat" is crazy, if you're over 6' you'll probably have a pretty uncomfortable ride.
This ride is great. It’s my #6 in the park. It was my #8 but a magic seat ride bumped it up. The airtime after the turnaround is unbeatable
Worst coaster in the park, seriously needs a retrack and new trains, and with the restraints it feels like Cock and Ball torture, it's just not fun at all. What I hate most is that a lot of enthusiasts DONT agree with me and it's aggravating!

A lot people love Metal and that pisses me off because Metal scares the shit out of me, so does Halloween and horror, yet people love it, hell they can't wait for October! How can someone like something that hurts and/or scares them!?

@idkwhattoputhere Negative Gs and Positive Gs are the best, Laterals are just pain and a sign the ride was under-designed, just bank the corners more. I305 has no laterals at all and it's why it's my Number 1
@idkwhattoputhere I just hate how enthusiasts and well, anyone else, can turn something I don't like, or even something I don't have a strong opinion on, and turn it into a Religion, praising coasters that have Laterals, people shaming consoles that you can't mod, etc. They make me feel like I'm not an Enthusiast if I don't like Laterals, or I'm not a gamer unless I mod literally everything
@idkwhattoputhere I do label myself as a Coaster Enthusiast, but I really don't like it when I get off of Skyrush or Magnum, my thighs hurting a lot, and then pop online to hear nothing but praise for these coasters I really didn't like
They weren't personally judging me for not liking Laterals, I'm just saying that their constant praise for that force makes me me feel like I'm doing something wrong, although I was personally judged and insulted for finding Magnum painful but other, typically older enthusiasts
The love people have for Magnum is like my love for the Beast. The Beast ignited my love of roller coasters. However, I rode Magnum for the first time this past week. It is a pretty bad rollercoaster. It is rougher than an old woody. You can feel the train dropping on the uneven track, just like on old wooden coasters. 33 years ago, I am sure it was incredible. However, as my son said, every man groaned at the same time as we went over the hills at the end. Our entire party (consisting of coaster fans to coaster newbies) hated this ride to a person. If you remove the nostalgia, it is complete trash.
Magnum sits at 4th for me (haven't done dragster)
I rode this over and over the year it opened. LoL my cousin was Catholic and by the time we reached the top of the lift hill, I had the rosary memorized from her nervous reciting of it. But... This September I decided to get back on it even though I had heard it got really rough. Oh boy was it rough. I ended up with an eye injury that I'm still dealing with. The water park view was amazing. The first drop was still fun and so were the tunnels. But be forewarned, if you need to avoid serious impact and jarring based on any particular health condition or age, this is one to think twice about. I rode in the front row, too, hoping to get a smoother ride. But still ended up with a lingering issue, unfortunately

@@XscreamThrills the struggles of being a middle-aged enthusiast are real! But that's the great thing about RUclips coaster reviews. It's a way to find out about a ride experience and potentially avoid one that might be a bad idea if you have a particular physical vulnerability. But at least I got a lot of awesome rides on Magnum XL when it was new 💛
As popular and historical this ride is it amazes me that I've never seen mentioned anywhere that on top of the lift hill if you look way out you can see the Perry Nuclear Power Plant
My take on Magnum is that I find that it depends too much on where you sit. It's really an odd janky ride with rough transitions no matter where you sit but in that way it feels like an old Arrow mine train with giant hills. I was really underwhelmed by the back seat when I first rode it and you'd think that the back would be great. The front is also underwhelming in my opinion as well. The magic seat really is great and frankly even the third car is quite good, especially compared to the front and back. I think the thing is that the trains are so long that they span multiple airtime hills at the end so it really throws off the usual distribution of airtime across the seats. So it's super weird.
That said, if you are in the right seat it is quite impressive. And the view from the lift hill is unbelievable. So I do like it overall but I have trouble saying that it is unequivocally great.
I love the magnum and the wait is usually under 10 mins.

Personal, unbiased opinion; it's a good ride, but doesn't hold a torch to the others in the park, and it mostly comes down to the seats and restraints for me. Even when you know what's coming, the janky Arrow transitions really slam my thighs into the lap bar, and the pretzel turnaround almost needs the trims to keep the laterals down to avoid crunching into the side of the ride. I feel like it usually gives me a headache, too. Maybe if it had the awesome T-bars and padded from Intamin, it'd be higher on my list...
Honestly it's my least favorite hyper coaster ever. Sure it may have some great airtime but it was way too rough especially near the end and I prefer smoothness over airtime any day.
Magnum reminds me of a particular country song because it isn't as good as it once was but it's as good once as it ever was. Actually, I'm usually good for about 2 or 3 rides on it.
When I went to CP I rode the Magnum and it was absolute booty. I would rate it a 1.5/10 and it is the worst ride I have ever rode. It’s super bumpy and I don’t really care the Magic seat is it still stucks. The best part was getting off. I don’t care what these old people say it’s dookie, Just ride the Maverick or Millenium Force or anything else in the Park.

with cedar point being my home park, i've had many rides on this and it is by far one of my least favorites in the park, the restraints bruise my thighs, and the transitions make it no better for me, i don't know if i have always just gotten bad rides on it but it has never been good for me

My experience in the magic seat in 2019 was pretty crazy, but I did the magic seat again in 2021 and I was extremely underwhelmed. I don't know how rare it is for the trims to be off, but the finale just felt more flojector.
The roughness never bothers me, but the ejector from my experiences are nowhere near as strong as people make it out to be, and because it's at cedar point, there's an insane amount of hype surrounding it.
Thus, in my opinion, magnum is without question the most overrated coaster I've ridden. Love the reviews man!

Okay, I'll be that guy. I've ridden 13 traditional hyper coasters and this one is by far the worst of the bunch. Rough, janky, uncomfortable seats & even sounds like it's falling apart. I couldn't care less about its historical significance, it's garbage.
And that's an okay opinion to have 👍 honestly I'm surprised how many have came out in support of Magnum XL 200

Magnum is definitely lame with those cramped seats for any person over 6’4”
Magnum lovers are going to hate me but Magnum has got to one of the worst coasters ever built. Some people have this trash ranked over rides Skyrush, Steel Vengeance and Maverick and I just don't get it, idk maybe I need a reride on it
Yea you do. Ride in the last car 1st of 2nd row those are the best seats unless you want the craziness of car one third row. Make sure you DO NOT staple yourself and that you hold the lapbar up the entire ride
It depends on how you ride it. If you sit a bit slouched while pulling down the lap bar and sit straight up against the seat afterwards, you’ll gain room to enjoy the ride more if you were stapled. The lap bar is a bit painful if stapled.
My bone with it is the restraints. If it wasn’t for those terrible Arrow lap bars, I’d actually think it would be an enjoyable coaster. But this is another ride like Skyrush: potentially great ride but the restraints set it back.
I think you have it slightly underrated but I agree with your overall point! 👍
