  • Mr. Short Game is back with 2 different types of shots to try when you chip from the hardpan and find yourself on the short side.
The lie and your confidence will dictate which one you choose, but both are good options for this tough shot.
One is a bit more challenging to pull off but an excellent alternative if the lie calls for it. Check them both out.

Your "bad" lies around that green are so much better than our 2nd and 3 rd shots in our fairways here in West Texas! I would love that amount of grass ANYWHERE on our goat ranch.

To recommend always using the most lofted club for a chip off of hard pan is overly simplistic. The amount of bounce on highest lofted wedges comes into play. If the highest lofted club usually has a lot of bounce, that will tend to cause skulling the ball. (Some 60 degree wedges are an exception and could be used.) A skulled shot is caused because of the bounce. Even though the sole of the club is on the ground, the leading edge is still above the ground. It won't get under the ball to get it up in the air. I will use my wedges to illustrate. My 60 degree wedge has the most bounce of any club in my bag. I use it from sand. My 54 degree wedge still has significant bounce. I use it out of somewhat hard sand. The only way I could use them successfully off of hard pan is to have my hands way ahead of the club head at impact. That decreases the loft so much that the effective loft is at least as low as my gap wedge. My gap wedge has a narrow sole with a little bounce. I can get under the ball with the gap wedge without having to keep my hands way ahead of the ball at impact. It is WAY easier to use and has a higher percentage of successful chips off of hard pan. A better recommendation is to use the highest lofted wedge that has low bounce on the sole.

In nearly all these RUclips golf videos the bad and hardpan lies are what we would call pristine conditions. Why don't they go into real bad lies - dead dirt, gravel, weeds, twigs and roots. Why do we never see these lies like 'normal' golfers experience?
