Chipping & Pitching From Tight Lies

  • Chipping and Pitching from a tight lie is a challenge, which highlights confidence levels. If a golfer plays the shot with self belief and conviction, then invariably, the result will be quite good. If a player is hesitant or tense, or is any way concerned about contacting the golf ball, then a much poorer performance is often displayed.
Despite the short game techniques employed by an individual, trust in the equipment and commitment to the shot, are the key ingredients to consistent performance. However, we believe that understanding how the golf club interacts with the turf, can help any golfer achieve better results and build confidence.
Not all ‘tight lies’ are created equal. Aussie Golf Pros explain how to approach pitching from tight lies, both in soft and firm conditions. We believe each challenge should be played very differently, depending on the amount of ‘give’ in the soil underneath the short grass.
You will learn the ideal angle of attack for each lie and when you should utilise the bounce of your wedge. Glen Haynes explains why so many club golfers struggle with this shot and he demonstrates how you can prepare for these shots for improved performance.
Adjusting your angle of approach into the golf ball to cope with differing conditions does require practice. Included in our Ultimate Practice Guide, are some unique and effective drills to help you be aware of your angle of approach and prepare you for the different lies you will inevitably face on the golf course. Golf Coaches, Not Teachers
The Aussie Golf Pros are holistic coaches in every sense of the word. Steve and Glen are both fully qualified members of the PGA of Australia and are avid students of the Sports Sciences. Together, they are certified in Advanced Golf Coaching, Golf Psychology, TPI (Body-Swing Connection), NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Personal Development and Skill Acquisition.
Steve and Glen are not ‘Method’ coaches. They recognise that there are literally 1000’s of ways to swing a golf club! Rather than try to ‘change’ your swing, their goal is to help You Be The Best Golfer You Can Be!
    Skill Development vs Technical Changes
Although technique is an important factor in improving a golfer’s performance, Skill Development is largely neglected in golf coaching today. Skill is something that can be tangibly improved with proper understanding of the golf impact laws and effective practice towards improved performance.
    External Focus of Attention
Most golf teaching involves an internal focus. Common suggestions might include increased hip turn, a still head or improved hand path. These are all factors of the golf swing, which many golfers and teachers consider important. However, as they are focused internally, on movements of the body, golfers find changes extremely difficult to process.
Enter the world of External Focus of Attention. This means that instead of focusing on body parts, a golfer can and should focus more on the target, the ball, the clubhead - objects which are external to the body. The sciences involving Motor Skill Learning have proven that by employing an External Focus of Attention, sports men and women learn new moves more quickly, retain changes more readily and can perform better under pressure.

    Hi Glen and Steve,
Great Advice, a timely reminder for me. Been struggling chipping from tight lies, usually end up blading across the green lol 😂😂
    Cheers

In WA our lies are super tight right now, especially on the coastal courses. Imagine you have are playing off a thin sheet of cardboard placed on a concrete slab.
Yesterday I spent an hour practicing a 20m chip with every club from 60deg to 8 iron, my 54 and my gap were the two best clubs for consistency.
I also think you could have mentioned a little about grind options.

Hi Out of the Blue. Thank you for your comment.
Sounds like you’re putting the effort in, well done!
Interested to hear, what sort of results were causing you issues with the 60°? Does that ‘sheet of cardboard’ have some dusty give to it or is the club bouncing.
Yes, absolutely we give have talked about bounce options, although we did mention the common bounce characteristics of sand and lob wedges. What sort of bounce do you have on your wedges?

Excellent demonstration on hitting tight lie pitch shots Glen! Being it's winter here in California, we're getting a lot of these lies around the green and they have become my nemesis. I'll definitely keep your technique in mind when this shot is again presented to me. I'm a new subscriber and look forward to your videos.

Thanks Glen for the useful tips on how to chip / pitch. Like you said I always had a few practice swing before the actual shot. The practice swings are fine. I managed to just brush the turf. However I still duff (hit the ground a couple of inches before hitting the ball). Why? I don't think my practice swings, the ball position, the stance, the swing are any different from the actual shot.

Hi John, thank you for your question.
We’ve all been there, taking perfect practice swings, only to mess up the shot.
Although the swing feels the same, one thing does change - tension! When the intention is to strike the golf ball, it’s quite easy to hang on a bit more firmly, tighten up and therefore, change the low point of your swing.
Keep striving to soften the hands, arms and shoulders.
      You’ll get it!
      Glen

@@AussieGolfPros this is totally me post a rotator cuff injury coming back to golf - freaking frustrating and I believe it really is the tension of that tight lie- I can do it from any rough fluffy lie no problem.
