  • WRIST or NO WRIST?
Should you use your wrists for chipping and pitching?
This question is one of the most common ones I hear when discussing the short game and shots around the green with players looking to improve their short game.
The short answer is YES... but HOW YOU USE YOUR WRISTS depends on a few factors. It depends on what type of shot you are trying to hit. What the lie is like. Do you want the ball to fly high or low? Do you want it to stop close to where it lands, or release once it hits the ground. You also need to factor in what the lie is like and what the ground conditions are like, as well as any slope that you are playing from, or need to land your ball on.
The wrists are involved in EVERY single shot you hit in golf - even putting. Eliminating them completely is neither possible, nor desirable. Managing the wrists is the key to having success with your chipping and pitching around the green, and understand exactly HOW TO MOVE THE WRISTS will free you from the shackles of your one-way thinking when it comes to these shots and unlock an entire new world of possibilities when it comes to your shot selection around the green.
In this video, I will use the HACKMOTION wrist sensor to explain and demonstrate how the wrists move for 2 different types of shots around the green - LOW and HIGH - along with the set-up required for each shot.

Wow, wow, wow, I really like that detail on opening/closing the club face and marrying that with raising/lowering the club. Opening the club face and lowering the club for a high chip makes so much more sense now. Awesome!

Great video -- being able to use two distinct versions of the chip shot can only be advantageous. With the chip-and-run, one needs to be clear when an extended roll will be a good thing. Otherwise, the controlled high-flight/short-roll can help "place" the ball as near to the hole as possible. Wonderful video. Thanks Rob!

Thanks for another great video. Quite a lot of details in there. I used to play with a weak grip, and my short game was relatively better than my long game. Then I changed to a much strong grip to improve my long game, and found the short game deteriorated. Now I have leaned that I could continue w stronger grip for my long game; and go back w weaker grip for my short game.

Nah this guy is legit. This + the video on the wrist hinge especially puts this guy top 3 if not number 1 for RUclips instruction. Russell Heritage is great too but these two videos are elite. It amazes me how such an important element of the swing, the wrists, are kind of glanced over and pros almost assume you know what correct hinge is when MOST, almost all, people do it completely wrong - good players included. So glad I found this channel

Really appreciate the detailed analytics regarding wrist action and how the ball reacts off the face of the club. Factual information the way you provide it is way more helpful because what we “feel” is often misleading, and what we think can be plain wrong. Very timely video Rob. I have been practising chipping lately because when golf season starts it is chipping that I will struggle with most. I had changed to a weaker grip as per your former videos on chipping. I have been practising with a 52, but now I will see if I can hit them lower. Chipping seems to be THE most complicated thing to do well in golf, given the variety of shots needed & the different lies one encounters.

I never really thought about wrist hinge up and down for high shots and low running shots. On those chip shots close to the green, I will use a 5 fairway wood or 5-7 iron and stroke as a putter. All others, I use something similiar to your method. This video was packed with great information Rob that is very helpful to me. I am going to archive this video for future referral. Thank You! Wow, Rob! Great insight into the short game! Thanks so much! I've always used a strong grip for every shot. Your method makes sense to change the grip in order to hit the ball higher. I've always had better luck using my wrists in every shot. Poor contact, especially with thin lies & deep grass if you take the wrists out of the shot. What about short bunker shots??? Weak grip there, also? Thanks for all your help!

    First class information.
Very revealing the concept of where the loft is pointing with the face rod.
I find I’m always caught out on ball above feet shots firing off to the left… again, no wonder, the loft is pointing way left.
It’s a shame the face rods don’t work on hybrids, fairway and drivers .

So for low, bump and run stand closer to the ball w shaft more upright. For higher land soft shots hands low stand farther away from the ball and slight opening of the club face. The challenge is remembering this in the heat of battle and various lies can alter these. Love your instruction and am sure I have company. Thank you Rob.

Always great content, but this one strikes me particularly hard. I have been honing my game and really focused on 130 yds in last year and I dropped from a 13 to an 8.6. One of my next areas of focus is the chipping area. I always fooled myself and frankly put more pressure on my iron play to not miss greens due to a bad chipping and pitching motion/results. Some people are good at it naturally and I am not one of them. I am here to say you can only avoid this so long then you have to put the work in on the chipping/pitching to save par or birdie par 5’s when you don’t hit the green in 2. Thank you so much for the content and taking the time to focus on key subjects and finding illustrative ways to prove physically what your try to feel. This type of content works for visual and feel players. Awesome!

Great stuff! My approach to chipping is I try to use no wrist at the beginning of the season and adjust by using different clubs, even using something like a 7 or 6 iron even to chip and just use more like a putting stroke…as my temp and timing gets better as the season progresses, I’ll work on doing multiple types of shots with my wedges. I carry a 48, 52, 56, and 60…I prefer to chip with my 52 most of the time.

Great video....i think 2 things...1.the lie..tight/fluffy...2..how much green to work with....both of these dictate which club to use as well as less or more wrist.......very tight lies tend to lead to more chunks/skulls for the less skillful....ive always try to land ball 1 step on green an let it run to hole if possible....especially if tight lie....that helps me choose sand/pitch/9/8/7....to chipwith depending on length the ball runs one step on to the hole....the lob wedge should really be reserved for only ...for when there is no other way to get it close....most often...the lob wedge gets used way to often by non pros....who use it all the time!....but they hit 500 balls a day!!!..great video.
