  • Why do I top my fairway woods? These golf shots are really important to learn to play, especially if you don’t hit the ball very far. In this video, Aussie Golf Pros show you why you top golf shots, specifically fairways woods. Learn how to compress your woods and brush the grass for longer, more consistent shots from the fairway.
For shorter hitters, Glen advocates using more loft from the fairway, such as a 5 wood or even a 7 wood (7 metal). It’s easy for players like Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods to hit a 3 wood high in the air, because they swing the club at such high speeds. You can’t fight physics, just be realistic and choose the right loft for you that gives you the best results on the golf course.
Learn the 3 major causes for topping fairway woods and how to improve your swing and your mindset. By following these simple principles, you too can flush those fairway shots straighter, further and more consistently.

    Golf Coaches, Not Teachers
The Aussie Golf Pros are holistic coaches in every sense of the word. Steve and Glen are both fully qualified members of the PGA of Australia and are avid students of the Sports Sciences. Together, they are certified in Advanced Golf Coaching, Golf Psychology, TPI (Body-Swing Connection), NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Personal Development and Skill Acquisition.
Steve and Glen are not ‘Method’ coaches. They recognise that there are literally 1000’s of ways to swing a golf club! Rather than try to ‘change’ your swing, their goal is to help You Be The Best Golfer You Can Be!
    Skill Development vs Technical Changes
Although technique is an important factor in improving a golfer’s performance, Skill Development is largely neglected in golf coaching today. Skill is something that can be tangibly improved with proper understanding of the golf impact laws and effective practice towards improved performance.
    External Focus of Attention
Most golf teaching involves an internal focus. Common suggestions might include increased hip turn, a still head or improved hand path. These are all factors of the golf swing, which many golfers and teachers consider important. However, as they are focused internally, on movements of the body, golfers find changes extremely difficult to process.
Enter the world of External Focus of Attention. This means that instead of focusing on body parts, a golfer can and should focus more on the target, the ball, the clubhead - objects which are external to the body. The sciences involving Motor Skill Learning have proven that by employing an External Focus of Attention, sports men and women learn new moves more quickly, retain changes more readily and can perform better under pressure.
All of the Aussie Golf Pros coaching, drills and advice for clients and viewers, involve an External Focus of Attention and the results can be astonishing!

Brilliant comment about how a 10 finger grip can facilitate topping by shortening the radius of golf swing. A reason not to do it- something I have been doing all my life and topping fairway woods with consistency too. Need to change that now thanks to your video. Well done.

Number two reason is exactly what I have been doing for years and never realized it. With all my clubs resulting in thin shots and fat shots and shanks. It dawned on me, I went straight to the range and made an effort to stay down on the back swing and immediately started popping up the hybrids (hitting under the ball). I cannot say how many golfing videos I have watched and no pro ever said to watch out for this. You are amazing and one of the few instructors who have helped my game. 90% of videos out there have had me trying so many things that not only did not help but introduced bad habits. Thanks again, subbed, and eternally grateful.

The fairway woods can be challenging, with little margin for error. Good luck with the drills.

Excellent points Glen! I find that my misses are early in the round and are probably due to poor ball position. Once I find what's proper, I have very little trouble. I have taken the 3 wood out of my bag and now I only carry a 5 wood and a 3 hybrid. Because of this video, I am now thinking of adding a 7 wood and replacing the 3 hybrid with a 4 hybrid.

Interesting, I also made changes. Took the driver out, put the 3 wood back in for teeing off. Carry a 5 and 7 wood along with a 5 hybrid. Made a difference for my game. Doesn’t hurt to experiment. I just came across this site a week ago and enjoy the videos. Has many of the excellent points from the “Easiest Swing” method that I follow religiously follow today at 75 plus YO. Excellent instructor.

Glen, I use a Ping 14.5 3wood off the tee box with a white castle tee. This is giving me a little advantage of a more upward trajectory similar to hitting up with the driver. Do you recommend making any changes to this that would improve my distance? Maybe a lower tee height? So maybe Ann adjustment for teeing and another for fairways. Thanks for all the tips.

      Thank for your question Richard.
My only concern with a tee that high for your 3-wood is the adjustment you need to make when hitting your 3-wood from the fairway. Tour professionals, both men and women, average about 2° downwards, with their approach angle for the 3-wood. However, if you can cope with and it works for you, then keep at it.
      Cheers
      Glen

Also, I thought we interlock on all shots except putting?
Good to see even you can duff a shot. Haha

    • @AussieGolfPros

Thank you for your question Wayne.
I personally prefer the interlock grip, however, many elite golfers use the overlap or ‘Vardon’ grip. This still places the hands together on the club, so they can work together.
Oh, and yes, I found the slow swing 3-wood very challenging! 😂
      Cheers
      Glen
