    The history of this shot is that Raymond Floyd, one of, if not arguably the best, chipper of the ball greenside, used this very vertical shaft putting technique while chipping everything off the toe of the club. The Shark, Greg Norman, a big fan and friend of Ray, approached Ray and had him teach him this technique and why he used it. Greg then adopted this type of technique when the ball was sitting in a very tight lie around the green - where most people would maybe think of possible putting the ball - but the ball had to first go over some amount of greenside grass before it got to the putting surface. The one difference that they used, and I would argue is better than what is shown here, is that both players after they placed the shaft of the club in a near vertical position, then choked up dramatically on the grip, to the point that they where near the bottom of the grip, and their arms where hanging nearly straight down, so that they could use a more natural grip and their straight arms made any interaction with the ball and turf a non issue - i.e. you don't chunk a putt. To anyone out their struggle chipping (blades and chunks), I would highly recommend this technique, with the adjustment that I would stand the club shaft more vertical and choke up on the grip. This technique is bullet proof and will help regrow your confidence around the greens.

    Tried this out in my house off my golf mat to my little putting green and I was hitting any type of chip or flop I wanted. The moment when I realized I was using the heal instead of the toe more was an ahah moment for me . I always thought toe first would be disastrous to any golf shot. My 60 degree Full toe wedge is now my savior any where from 30 yards out. Thanks for the tip!!!

    I appreciate tips like this because they fall into my normal miscues! I've never had trouble in bunkers because, just like in the fairway, I hit 1 or 2 inches behind the ball. Now, from a close position on a fairly tight lie, I can hit it off the toe, like I do about 25% in the fairway. Can you create a helpful shot like the ones I hit with the bottom of my hybrids???

    You can pitch at at home 365 days a year on the carpet in your house(as long as it’s not 70s shag carpet) . As well as putting too, I’ve made tremendous improvements in my game putting and chipping in the last 2 years during the winter months inside my studio apartment. I typically putt into a golf ball box (the small ones that hold 3 balls) and chip into my Laz-boy chair or on top my bed if I’m practicing flop shots (which I’ve also mastered during the past couple months).
    Try it, I do it everyday, usually before and after work.. it’s a good stress relief and takes your mind off the day.

If my golf scores do not improve this season then I know it is ME and no-one else.You make each video so simple and I realise that I waste so much time on the range ( course has been closed) with no real purpose. No more- I shall really concentrate on just one or two of your tips at a time and then I know my golf will improve.Thank you so much for your time and effort it is much appreciated.

    Great video, I have used this technique before and it works well for me; 53* & 56* wedges. But could you also use a hybrid in this situation, same putting technique and standing closer?

    • @AlexChekholko
      @AlexChekholko 4 года назад

      My experience with the hybrid is that I get a lot more roll, so I avoid it for the short ones like this, but if you need to get over 1 yard of rough and then roll 50 feet, a 20 degree hybrid could work. Choke down lower on the grip because it will bounce much off of the hybrid face.

    I use my putting grip for this and play it like a putt with the ball under my eyes. You will likely find that your 7 or 8 iron will roll out the same distance as your putter, which makes it easy to judge distance with out a lot of practice. Have used this for years and is great if your confidence in traditional chipping is not strong.

    I first saw this toe down when watching a seniors tour event. He was using it to get out of deep rough next to the green. Because he had so little green to work with and the ball had settled way down in the cabbage, he used a relatively small swing to pop the ball out instead of the explosion shot seen so often today. I've used it successfully from anywhere when the lie is dodgy and can't risk a big swing. Some of these old guys have a lot of stuff to teach us.

  • @omgoldmangolf

    I have an off topic question.....When in a sand bunker I need to open the face, but looking for your input. I have the align grips where at 6:00 the face is square. I'm right handed should the red line be a 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00? I want to grip the club take a practice swing thumping the ground before I get in the bunker. My bad tendance is to without hinking about it to end up square faced and I want to use the grip to give me a check in the bunker.

    @mrshortgame. The tip about “you gotta set up with the toe behind the ball.. what do you say about the pros who don’t even put their club behind the ball before swinging, they’ll simply keep arms/body loose or swinging/readjusting and then just swing, there’s no setting the club up behind the ball because it does not at all guarantee that’s where you’ll strike it. A couple players move their club up-down , up-down, forward/backward, forward-backward just to keep loose and not have tension during the swing and they manage to hit it directly where they want ...

    I use this technique a lot, but with an added bonus. I use the rule of 12 , a chipping ratio guide. So if I'm chipping with my sand wedge its 1 part airborne 1 part roll, pw equals 1 part airborne 2 parts roll and so on. Give it a try with this technique, i get up and down at least 75 percent. 😊

Also If you want to get better, which I did at chipping coming from someone who was awful to becoming the strongest part of my game is practice chipping coins consistently at a target & follow through with the shot, loose hands & strong grip. You’ll become a master at chipping. Trust me.

      Mark The Golf Addict When he says put your hands up high...Putting your hands up high and forward like that is unnatural and inconsistent...simply stand closer to the ball, so that your eyes are about directly over the ball. You won’t be looking down and forward like a normal shot/Pitch...but instead looking directly down. It keeps your stroke more consistent also.
