The history of this shot is that Raymond Floyd, one of, if not arguably the best, chipper of the ball greenside, used this very vertical shaft putting technique while chipping everything off the toe of the club. The Shark, Greg Norman, a big fan and friend of Ray, approached Ray and had him teach him this technique and why he used it. Greg then adopted this type of technique when the ball was sitting in a very tight lie around the green - where most people would maybe think of possible putting the ball - but the ball had to first go over some amount of greenside grass before it got to the putting surface. The one difference that they used, and I would argue is better than what is shown here, is that both players after they placed the shaft of the club in a near vertical position, then choked up dramatically on the grip, to the point that they where near the bottom of the grip, and their arms where hanging nearly straight down, so that they could use a more natural grip and their straight arms made any interaction with the ball and turf a non issue - i.e. you don't chunk a putt. To anyone out their struggle chipping (blades and chunks), I would highly recommend this technique, with the adjustment that I would stand the club shaft more vertical and choke up on the grip. This technique is bullet proof and will help regrow your confidence around the greens.
Having extra options when around the green is great! I can't wait to practice this and add it to the shot tool bag.
MSG, love this, thanks. Also, just found and watched your brilliant ‘lose 5 shots’ series - as soon as the weather gets better here (in the UK) I’m going to work through it... I can’t wait to see how much it helps my game. Many thanks!!!! Charles
Been hitting this shot for a while off and on. Good to see you lay out the how to’s. Thanks. It’s a good way to take out the hosel and leading edge.
I always love these short game tips.
Awesome tip!
I’ve tried to implement this in the past with mixed results and now I understand why.
Lol
Gonna work on it some more your way this weekend!
U never cease to amaze me for real... So good at ur explanations...
Love the content man. Thanks for the awesome vids!!!
It looks so easy when you show it. I often heard about chipping with the toe and practise it with mixed experience, but the tip with the hands was my lack of information. Thx a lot!
Great lesson. Covering all the subtleties
Great tip Matt enjoyed it keep crank n em out I’ll keep watching
Just what I needed...Thanks Matt Boogie!!
Tried this out in my house off my golf mat to my little putting green and I was hitting any type of chip or flop I wanted. The moment when I realized I was using the heal instead of the toe more was an ahah moment for me . I always thought toe first would be disastrous to any golf shot. My 60 degree Full toe wedge is now my savior any where from 30 yards out. Thanks for the tip!!!
Runion Chipping technique rule of 12 for the win! Love you see you show everyone that if you have done it. Pretty amazing once you learn it to use the appropriate club to chip.
Thanks for the tip. Gonna use it tomorrow along with my new athalonz!
Used this on the course today. Worked like a charm!!!
Good video! Not enough people teach this. I actually using my putting grip for these shots, which helps to get the hands in the right position and limit any wrist hinge. I've been trying this on the course since I watched this video and my distance control is so much better! The ball releases and rolls more consistently.
My favorite shot! I've really been having great success with this shot. Thanks!
Always great content my man!!! Keep it up, big thumbs up 👍
I recently fell in love with this technique using my 9 iron. Yeah baby
Great Video!! Thank you
The same can be applied when putting down hill, hit the ball off the toe to reduce the speed. Thanks for video.
Great info Matt! But I always thought the toe shot was used with the foot wedge! ; )
I appreciate tips like this because they fall into my normal miscues! I've never had trouble in bunkers because, just like in the fairway, I hit 1 or 2 inches behind the ball. Now, from a close position on a fairly tight lie, I can hit it off the toe, like I do about 25% in the fairway. Can you create a helpful shot like the ones I hit with the bottom of my hybrids???
Just want to tell you thanks I played really well today using your tips 😀
Standing closer to the ball helps.
Very nice. I’ll give this a go.
Love your videos all way from Ireland
I am sooo gonna try that. Thanks
lovely video
You can pitch at at home 365 days a year on the carpet in your house(as long as it’s not 70s shag carpet) . As well as putting too, I’ve made tremendous improvements in my game putting and chipping in the last 2 years during the winter months inside my studio apartment. I typically putt into a golf ball box (the small ones that hold 3 balls) and chip into my Laz-boy chair or on top my bed if I’m practicing flop shots (which I’ve also mastered during the past couple months).
Try it, I do it everyday, usually before and after work.. it’s a good stress relief and takes your mind off the day.
Another great video Matt. If my golf scores do not improve this season then I know it is ME and no-one else. You make each video so simple and I realise that I waste so much time on the range ( course has been closed) with no real purpose. No more- I shall really concentrate on just one or two of your tips at a time and then I know my golf will improve.Thank you so much for your time and effort it is much appreciated.

You make it look so simple!
5:00 now that was cool! 😎 also surprised yourself! 😆
And it works, thank you so
lovely stuff
Not my words, Micheal. The words of Shakin' Stevens.
I forget when I first saw this [somewhere else] but I find it to be very accurate if I get the momentum right - have holed out a number of times too
Hey Matt aka (mr.shortgame)
Im from south korea, and i usually dont write comment, but i just want to thank you that u provide really nice golf tips with easily understand!
Keep up the good work! Thx
Thanks
I have been practicing this for the past couple of days. Not the best for every situation but there r good situations for this. I want to stand closer to the ball.
Excellent
Nice ⛳🏴👍
Great video, I have used this technique before and it works well for me; 53* & 56* wedges. But could you also use a hybrid in this situation, same putting technique and standing closer?
My experience with the hybrid is that I get a lot more roll, so I avoid it for the short ones like this, but if you need to get over 1 yard of rough and then roll 50 feet, a 20 degree hybrid could work. Choke down lower on the grip because it will bounce much off of the hybrid face.
I do this every tine I play fast greens! Keeps acceleration steady.
MADE IT!
I use my putting grip for this and play it like a putt with the ball under my eyes. You will likely find that your 7 or 8 iron will roll out the same distance as your putter, which makes it easy to judge distance with out a lot of practice. Have used this for years and is great if your confidence in traditional chipping is not strong.
I first saw this toe down when watching a seniors tour event. He was using it to get out of deep rough next to the green. Because he had so little green to work with and the ball had settled way down in the cabbage, he used a relatively small swing to pop the ball out instead of the explosion shot seen so often today. I've used it successfully from anywhere when the lie is dodgy and can't risk a big swing. Some of these old guys have a lot of stuff to teach us.
Why lift hands vs. lowering hands on grip and stepping closer/more upright like a putt?
I have an off topic question.....When in a sand bunker I need to open the face, but looking for your input. I have the align grips where at 6:00 the face is square. I'm right handed should the red line be a 7:00, 8:00 or 9:00? I want to grip the club take a practice swing thumping the ground before I get in the bunker. My bad tendance is to without hinking about it to end up square faced and I want to use the grip to give me a check in the bunker.
Good technique to use chipping out of the rough beside the green. Keeps the heel from dragging through the grass.
My friends, yes I have friends, give me stuff about chipping off the first cut. I always try to flop from there. High risl shot but it just looks beautimus when it buzzes the tower or stops near it. Right on, thanks!!!
0:04 -- You just brought back my PTSD.
Matt Aamold Great comment, lol
Up to what distance would you advice this shot to be effective?
Hey Matt,,, I'm playing tomorrow with a buddy who always beats me every round. Close but no cigar kinda thing. I practice a lot with my optishot 2 . I beat him at that almost every time but on the course he gets me. What do you say to someone like me. Thanks in advance.
Great tip! Looks like you were about 3'ish yards off the green. How far back would you recommend using this technique (5 yards, 7, etc...)?
@mrshortgame. The tip about “you gotta set up with the toe behind the ball.. what do you say about the pros who don’t even put their club behind the ball before swinging, they’ll simply keep arms/body loose or swinging/readjusting and then just swing, there’s no setting the club up behind the ball because it does not at all guarantee that’s where you’ll strike it. A couple players move their club up-down , up-down, forward/backward, forward-backward just to keep loose and not have tension during the swing and they manage to hit it directly where they want ...
Nice
That shot works good on short chips off tight lies ,I use it quite a bit.
The arm lock technique is the secret sauce for this shot. I've been using it almost exclusively for anything just off the green to 30 yards out. It's basically a putting stroke with loft.
good instruction as usual my toe shot is when I kick the ball after chunkin it
Using your leather to play golf again?
We call it the "5 iron" from a bad lie. Pick it up and toss it back into play, the "5 [finger] iron" haha
I would be putting from there!
I try to hit center on all my greenside chips, but damn near every single one i strike on the toe (clubs arent too short... it's a me issue 😥). Now I just can say that's how [pro] does it! Woot!!
I use this technique a lot, but with an added bonus. I use the rule of 12 , a chipping ratio guide. So if I'm chipping with my sand wedge its 1 part airborne 1 part roll, pw equals 1 part airborne 2 parts roll and so on. Give it a try with this technique, i get up and down at least 75 percent. 😊
would like to try this but we have nothin but rain and wind here in England looks nice where you are

I like using this but sometimes I will blade the shot and run it way past hole. How do I stop that.
Great stuff as always. Since I’m a poor putter I rely on my 54 degree wedge to start rolling quick to within a couple feet of the cup
Titleist Performance Institute......awesome facility
If you struggle with chipping I would advise using a 7 iron on tight lies just off the green. Also If you want to get better, which I did at chipping coming from someone who was awful to becoming the strongest part of my game is practice chipping coins consistently at a target & follow through with the shot, loose hands & strong grip. You’ll become a master at chipping. Trust me.
What loft wedge Mr SG?
It’s a good technique but i use my normal set up and close the face esp against the grain! It’s easy even if you’re Yippy
What club is that
from that close a much safer shot for a bogey golfer is to putt the ball.
I hit dead toe shots so I need a wedge with grooves on the entire face. I wish Volkey would make their clubs that way.
I have been doing this for years, i can normally get the ball close
haha I did buy all there products :)
Trust makanidzani
Did you learn this shot from Dave Clayton?
Like it..at least no pvc pipe.
When I hit this shot it comes out so soft and spinny. Litterly flys, hits and rolls maybe a foot.
Mark The Golf Addict When he says put your hands up high...Putting your hands up high and forward like that is unnatural and inconsistent...simply stand closer to the ball, so that your eyes are about directly over the ball. You won’t be looking down and forward like a normal shot/Pitch...but instead looking directly down. It keeps your stroke more consistent also.

my go to when I have a dodgy lie
I'd just put
😎💰👍❤️👊
And if you putt crosshanded, do the same with this chip.
Taylormade hi toe for the win
Here's a hint putt the ball
Rory and TaylorMade just made this video like a week ago.
Matt I love ya, but seriously how much is bob Vokey paying you..... Just kidding
Hate to watch advertising certain clubs
just treat the wedge like a putter.
Just chip normal.. the way they've done it for 100 years.. you dont hear the pga saying ok heres phil gonna go with the toe chip. Kinda misleading young golfer I would say and I like you're channel watch all the videos but this ain't what you want lol
Thanks
