Thank you from New Zealand. I watched this video this morning and shot my best ever round this afternoon, 84 with two birdies. I am 71 and have a 21 handicap which I very much want to reduce. This is my 3rd season back at golf after a 45 year break. I will watch more of your videos. Cheers Ivan

Hey, Single digit handicapper and when I first saw your video I was like “He’s crazy, I will never use a 7 for chipping.. I practice short game for an hour or two daily and I always use my 58 and 54.. I practiced yesterday with the 7 for giggles and I was impressed with the consistency... I will be using the 7 for longer chips 15 yards + for now on... Thanks for the tip...

The better golfer you want to become, the more you should practice hitting every club from every location because you will learn from it. It reminds me of two stories from the Tour. First is how Tiger takes FULL swings hitting his 7 iron 100 yards and then slowly adds 10 yards to his distances - go try it and see how hard it is and then practice until you can do it. The 2nd is Bubba often takes 1 club, at his home course, and plays Par from the tips - he's Parred with every club in his bag (doesn't use his putter - doesn't want to break it). So yes, use that 7 iron

Love your video Matt cos i like using 7, 8, 9, and PW to do my bump n run. Late last year, i even got the special chipper after watching your review 😃. Then Covid hit my family hard. We lost her mom in November and then my wife 3 weeks ago. So we lost 2 loved ones within the 2 and half months. I guess now i can practice my short game after all the snow melts away and hopefully soon. As always, thank you for sharing great tips and lessons, Matt.🙏👍👍👏👏👏

I learned golf in the 90's and 7 was standard on chip and run. Took quite a few years off and greens seem generally faster now, at least in swOhio. So, I switched to the 8, and often have to go 9. 8 is my best club, as well.

Matt: best system I ever learned is the Bill Black method. Every club is a putter. Use putting stance and grip. Very mechanical, especially, when you lose your feel from having not played for a while. So, figure which is the 50-50 club, 50% carry and 50% roll. For me that is the Pitching Wedge. Next, a 33%-67% club (8 iron for me). And finally a 25%-75% club (6 iron for me). The other clubs become those in-between. So setup closer to the ball and putting stroke - the same stroke for every club. In time, one can really develop a great touch. I do it all the time especially when I am not sure of green speed. Obviously, uphill and down hill requires some changes in club selection. While I can do what you do, I prefer Bill Black's method.

There is no debate at all. Phil Rodgers, the short game guru who taught Nicolas and Palmer, has an easy and perfect method for chipping. You want ALL shots, no matter the club, to land two steps or six feet on the green. Then walk off steps from the ball to the spot on the green. Then start over from that point to the hole. Say it's 10 parts fly to the spot and come there 10 steps to the flag this is a 1:1ratio of flight and roll. Use a sandwedge . If it's 1/2 ratio use pitching wedge. 1/3 use nine iron etc. I guarantee you will be inside two feet every time

i almost exclusively use my 50 unless i need height or i need it to stop quick - not a fan of using a 7 iron tbh id rather use a PW as its more predictable off the face. What i mean by that is i find the ball comes off the 7 abit too hot for consistent control where as if i use my PW 50 54 or 58 i know how it comes off the face but i also know which ones i get stop/run with depending how im playing the shot.. 7 is a great go to for most golfers in fairness (play off 4)

Good lesson, thank you. I'm an 8 and sand wedge guy, they're the last two clubs in my bag before the putter. The sand wedge can be manipulated to many degrees as needed and the 8 can perform tasks that a 7 could around the green with the added bonus of having a little more loft. Up and in or up and down is my mantra, I'm too old to worry about anything else. lol

When I coach people I have them use 7 iron around the green to learn to brush the grass and not chunk or take a divot when chipping...also use a 8 iron out of the bunker until they get some confidence, makes hitting a sandwedge much easier when they move to it...good video, show more on how to deal with dormant bermuda conditions.

Just got back from Nevada where I got a bunch of golf in. Conditions of the fairway and around the green necessitated the use of mid-short irons (7,8,9) around the green. These irons were gold in these dried-out conditions. Wedges bought you very little, and I’m a good wedge player. Definitely worth practicing shots with these irons where the ground is either too dry or (even) too wet for wedges.

  • @stevehainestrumpet

Nice video. I have always had difficulty with how hard to hit a 7 iron verses a wedge around the green and determining how far the ball will roll out for one over the other. You may want to talk about aiming for a landing spot with either club. The 7 irons you hit in this video did not seem to go very high in the air. It definitely takes practice to get the feel of how hard to hit the ball for these shots.

While I don’t do the irons, typ the 8i, all the time, I do prefer it over the wedge. If it does require a wedge, it’s either the 50 or the 54. Great lesson for sure!

I use a ratio system of length of shot in the air vs roll out on the green. If it's a 1-1 ration (length of shot where I want to land ball vs roll out to the hole) then I use my SW (56). If it's a 1-2 ratio then I use my GW (52), 1-3 ratio then my PW (48) and so forth. I try to keep it simple as I use the same swing for each shot. If you go back and look at your video this method actually plays out in the first chip you hit with each club, the first chip with the 54 degree was about a 1-1 ratio and the 7 iron was about a 1-5 or 6 ratio. Great videos.

I'm never locked in on one specific iron. It could be anywhere from a 7 to PW. All depends on the lie, contour and distance involved. Love the bump and run.

Thank you for your 7ion chipping tip.
I have had most success using my 6 rescue club. I find it more forgiving and always try to hit the shot 1/3 in the air and 2/3 roll along the ground. Seems to save a lot of shots in a round.

I use my pitching wedge when ever around the green. Unless I have to get the ball up and stopped quickly. I tell others to use one club around the green so that they can build knowledge on how to hit different short distances with one club. Many (me included) have trouble hitting a 20 yard shot with different clubs. I even use this when I'm on the apron and have a long putt. I've become much more consistent with the pitching wedge on shorter chip shots.

Listen to this guy because he is spot on regarding the use of the 7 iron. I've no confidence whatsoever in my wedges at this distance and that is why I love my 7 iron; even for shorter or longer distances...it works for me! Been using the 7 for about 8 years and have sunk a few from quite a distance out. TY, Matt!

Great lesson here.. my 100 yard safety shot is my 7 iron bump and run.. rarely fails me! And it’s a great shot around the greens. No stress no strain ⛳️👍

As someone who owns a Cleveland Smart Sole 4.0 C...yeah it completely changes the way you play short shots. I'll use it up to 30 yards out and it helps get things out and under lots of trouble. Best $100 investment you can make as a mid to high handicap golfer for around the green.

Good Topic Matt. I have been using my 8 iron to chip and run onto the green with some success. I've been using my 7 iron for recovery shots out of the rough. It's a work in progress for me and your tips have come at a good time. Cheers

Gary Player advocates the same chipping philosophy and it works. My additional comments is to pay attention to the unevenness of the ground of which the ball has to run. It can easily move the ball out of line. Also if you struggle naturally to get the ball in the air with a 7 iron, than use the 8 iron instead.

Great video! Since many of us have traditional lofts versus the new stronger lofted clubs, could you give us a loft for the “7” iron shot. As an example, I have two sets of clubs, on one set the 7 iron is a 31 degree on the other set the 7 iron is 36 degrees (6 iron on this set is 32 degrees).

A friend, new to golf, was practicing chipping to a hole about 9 feet away and getting nowhere close.
Why not try a 7 iron I said. Isn't a pitching wedge for pitching? That was exactly what I had said when someone suggested it to me.
I dropped 2 balls and put both within a foot.
He said, OK I'll give it a try.
    1st ball, in the hole.
    2nd ball, in the hole.
    3rd ball, in the hole.
    Best golf lesson ever.

Hahaha, Been out for a practice round today and played two shots every time I was near to the green, just like your vdo. Yessiree Bob, 7 iron nailed it every time over the wedge. I even did a 60 metre pitch and run over the wedge. How come it’s taken me so many years to understand this simple “trick”. Keep it coming. Love your approach to playing the game. Cheers!

Great video to think about. I've recently stopped immediately grabbing my 60 and have been pitching with my PW or 9i. The reason I don't go with a lower loft is that with the ball further back and lower bounce on the club, I fear the chunk. The bounce on the PW, or other wedges, allows for easier ground interaction.

1st video i have seen on youtube. That someone is chipping or bumping and running on wet, matted bermuda grass. I am from NC and trust me. Its wet and dead in the winter time. I use 8,9 iron. Depends on the distance that i have to roll the ball. I will thin it or fat it with my wedge. Good job.

Great advice. I've been very prone to pulling out the 60 with reasonable confidence and results. In the last few rounds however, I've taken PW instead and occasionally 8i for the shorter chips where I can land the ball on the green and it's been wonderful. We have a great Par 3 near our place and every now and then I shoot 7i only instead of LW, GW and SW. Great fun practicing! Thank you and cheers from Sydney - Dave

Matt great tips, got onto using my irons for pitching and chipping depending on the scenario this year. At 5mins, what's the worst thing that can happen with a wedge greenside, you missed the almighty top and it flies through the green (with a 7iron roll) and into the bunker or worse out of bounds

Great video. I’ve learned with my questionable wedge play, to go with my 8 iron whenever I can. I’ve been getting much better results. Seem to get far better control keeping it low and rolling as opposed to flopping a wedge shot. I would say for a higher handicapper the lower loft iron is easier to play?

Thanks for a great video! I use 7i alot and now I will use it even more.
I just imagine it's my putter outside green. Same stroke and same pace and it goes just as long as my putter, but flies a 1/4 to a 1/3 of the distance.
It's not the sexiest, but my friends have alot of fun when I often place it close to pin. I think it's cool!

This is a great video, makes a lot of sense. Personally I have gained a lot by switching from lob or sandwedge to a pw or a 50 degree wedge. Might start trying more with a 7 or an 8.

    I've TOTALLY started this.
    It's ALL about confidence!
I'm very comfortable with my 7 iron and I want "roll out"..I rarely need to get the ball "up" so 7 works for me even as far out as 120yds.
I just feel more comfortable and need not fear the CHUNK!!

  • @astrosfan74

I use my lob wedge from any lie and situation around the green. I have very high confidence in my lob wedge around the green. I practiced really hard to get this confidence with my lob wedge for chipping. And I have been told by my golfing buddies at times I am a magician with my lob wedge when they see me use it and practice with it. I never use anything but my lob wedge for chipping and it works well for me and I dont lose many strokes by chunking it as I dont do this much at all with my lob wedge around the green for chipping. But to each their own. Not everyone can use a lob wedge for chipping and I dont feel comfortable using a seven iron. So lob wedge is the only club I will use for chipping around the green and even out of the bunkers as well.

Winter conditions in the South. I think most people can't comprehend how difficult the short game becomes on a dormant and wet golf course. It's probably the main reason most handicaps go up a few ticks in the Winter. The Texas wedge may be the best option when all confidence is shot.

A lot depends on green speed and if the green is sloping away from you. I’ve never been able to put spin on my chips, so even my sand wedge tends to run out more than I’d like. I do prefer bump and run for better consistency.

In my old school days, I was taught to shut the face a bit when chipping to get a truer roll. Might use anything from a 6 to a 9 depending on where the ball needed to land if space was tight. Always tried to land on fringe at least for a more predictable result. Now that I suck compared to my youth, your technique is more forgiving.
