Matt, you always describe the “how to” so well. Very easy to understand what to do, very simple and concise lessons. You’re an excellent teacher. Thanks!
100% agree. For the past 3 seasons I've been using my 56* for every shot inside 50-60 yards. Chips. Pitches. Sand. Flops. Easy confident decision every time. Love it!
This was a great explainer lesson. 30 years ago my golf coach made me play an entire round with just the 9 iron, nothing else, even for putting. This lesson reminded me of that wonderful and slightly frustrating but very helpful experience. Thanks!.
Absolutly agree, started to practice a single wedge chip, after your 5 tips to break 100 and it works wonders in confidence and it makes it easier to chip others wedges as well - because the confidence is there
best video I have ever seen for pitching. I was "that guy" that would play an 8 iron, PW, SW and never sure if I was right. Now my 54 will be all I use. Thanks
I use my 52 degree around the green. I have PW is 43, AW 48, GW 52, SW 56, LW 60. I feel comfortable with the 52 as I can hit it normal, close the loft for bump and run or open the loft up. It’s one of my most used clubs
Ive found my 50-deg wedge I pretty much ideal for me though on special occasions I might use my 56-deg SW. I try to keep to the former though; just love it Cheers
My sand wedge is a 56 and it’s my fav club in my bag. Even over the years whenever I’ve gotten new irons I keep the same SW because it’s so versatile. I can use it in every way from 85 yards in. From the fairway, rough, sand, lob, bump and run…whatever, I know I can get it within 3 feet of the hole 🕳 💪🏽
I like hearing this from a pro. I think learning to deal with just the one wedge to begin with helped me improve my game faster. I played that way for years and thought myself pretty good around the greens. Today I still want to default to the gap wedge (a Mizuno 50°) but I've done my time on the practice range with all my wedges now so I'll choose the one I think best suited to the distance and trajectory/spin I need now.
Matt’s way is the best way here, Holmer. Choose 1 club around the green. Trust us! We guarantee it will improve your green-side scoring. Btw, Ben Hogan did this VERY thing. In fact, I think his preference from 100yds in was to ALWAYS play his sand wedge.
@@golfmetrics5088 Seve didn't. lol And neither did Annika Sorenstam whose advice I've followed for years. She advocated we practice hitting shots to a specific distance with at least 3 different clubs. I make a special point of following that advice where my short game is concerned. And because of that, not many will bet against my short game. I'm a regular Phil according to the guys whose money I keep taking in our nightly skins game. But I believe I mentioned before I have our communities short game sized range just outside my back door. From 80 yards and in, I'm deadly with any wedge in the bag and a few more clubs for good measure. But also like I said, I still default to my sand wedge. It's my go to and for good reason. I keep a 60 with 5 degrees of bounce. A 56 bent to 55 with 10 degrees of bounce and a 50 with 8 degrees of bounce. Each of those clubs does something better than the others. The lob is a dream in a soaking wet bunker. It can cut through wet sand like it's nothing. The sand has more bounce making it more forgiving when faced with an uphill lie into the grain on our Bermuda grass we have here in Florida. So if you do the work, do your research, I have to disagree and stick with Annika on this one. Ultimately it's the best option because it brings more options to the table. But that said, learn on well first is never bad advice.
I prefer using one setup and one swing feel, different clubs for different shots. I also see the benefits of using one club for different shots, increases touch and feel. However practice, practice and more practice. Simply is always best👍
Love love love this video! Very helpful! One Question that I have Matt is how do you know where to land the ball based on how far away the flag is. Also how does that landing spot change when you open up the club face. Thanks!
Before seeing this I had already pulled my lob from the bag because I never used it and my 50* became only for full swings with it matching my iron set. I started doing this and people said I was weird and to just use the correct wedge vs changing the face angle. Thanks for the confirmation that I can do this and it not be weird
At some point or other i have used all 4 of my wedges for chips. Depends where the ball is in relation to the flag and which one i think i can hit best for that shot.
good tutorial. For 15 years, I've used a simple approach with only one decision required between 2 clubs - 56/0 for chipping (low flight) and 60/12 for pitching (high flight, incl bunkers).
That's all we had when I was learning golf, a PW and a SW. I learned to use them both and find this four-wedges scene confusing. Loft adjustments are made by grip position. Heck I have no idea what my PW loft is (as if I play it square ever). I'll go look it up. It's 50 or 51. The modern version of the same iron has a 46 degree face, I suppose if I had a modern set of clubs an extra wedge would do. As it is I'll just keep my 2-iron in the bag.
Excellent explanation of how to use a single wedge for different situations when chipping around the green. Pretty much use the same techniques. I use a 56° Vokey and my Taylor Made P-790 PW with a 45° loft for all my work around the green. This has improved my one-putts drastically.
I scored my best round of the Last 3 years a week ago. I pulled the 58 out of the bag and only used the PW for chips and pitches. The one feel made a big difference.
I go 54 which some days felt like my handicap index when trying so many different ideas. A golf teacher echoed your sentiments in a short game lesson. Use the 54 (or 56) for all the chipping/short pitch shots to get confidence then once you’ve learned it well feel free to work in a Lob or Gap or Pitching wedge for any yardage situations that seem appropriate. The sole on my lob screams sand club while the grinds on the PW and GW scream full shots. Cleveland CBX2s (46, 50, 54) although the lob is the 58 degree Smart Sole 4 by Cleveland. It sees the sand and maybe thick grass situations. Practice! Yep, I’ll try the same shots off the mat or green side with all the wedges to still see what each does reaffirming that I need to simplify and become a beast with one wedge when up close.
Great video Matt love the simple explanation as I’ve always been confused as to which wedge to use when and where and yes I need to practice this more but oddly when I go to either putting green ( which has a chipping area ) or the driving range which also has 3 greens 10,30&50yards away and a sand trap I do okay but on the course I’m more inconsistent , I may not concentrate as much for whatever reason 🤷♂️
Great video. I used to play a PW and only 2 specialty wedges (52 degree gap / 56 degree sand), using the gap wedge for predominantly full swings and the sand wedge for everything else. At the beginning of last season, went to 3 specialty wedges (added a 60 degree lob wedge), using each as all the instructional videos tell you, and totally destroyed my short game. Plus, I've looked at my stats and found that I might only use that lob wedge once per every12 rounds or so. I'm going back to PW-GW-SW and NOT looking back!
Hear hear. I truly don't care for the 60° - it's a speciality club that requires a ton of practice to see practical benefits. Opening the face of a 56° is good enough to get the job done. The only time I've ever used a 60° or seen it being used is when trying to get cute. I replaced it in my bag with a 18° 3h to fit the gap between my 3w and 3i.
Had a scratch handicap for over 20 years. My wedge cane was the reason. My short game was dominated by a PW or 8 iron. I modified a 2 iron to be the same exact length and lie as my 8. Used it to put from around the collar . I’m currently a 9 because I’m 71 and much shorter with every club. Still using clubs made in 83 but with a senior flex shaft and a 12 degree driver and 20 degrees fairway wood
I generally only use a 51 Approach Wedge, yet if I need more elevation I use my 56. I get confused a lot when I change. I carry a 60 for high flops, I suck at it and basically thin it or cut under it. Matt is the best.
I put together a set of four wedges SW, Gap, Ptiching and an older series Lob wedge. I hate the lob wedge. It throws wild in my hands. Good loft but over a 45 degree dispersion. Now, it is a Callaway X-12 vs. all the rest of my Rogue X irons . . . but I don't think that is so material. It may be that it is so alien in feel to all my other irons that I get wild shots.
Great stuff. I like to take spin off if last part is uphill to flag and add spin on if downhill. Really helps prevent that ball from misbehaving near the hole, keeping control of those puppet strings.
Phil Mickelson also recommends this in his short game book, although he suggests a 60° wedge. Think I'll try my 52 out next time I'm at the practice green though
Titleist t300 43* pw 10-20mtr from green because the ball comes off hot. Everything else I use a Vokey sm9 60* which is perfect for over bunkers and raised greens. Where i need the stopping power "spin" on the greens.
My normal club for every shot around the green, unless I need a specialty club is 45* PW. I have a 55* SW and 60* LW which I use either out of bunkers or for flop shots where I need to carry a bunker or water etc.
I carry 5 wedges. Pw, Aw, Gw, Sw and Lw. I play some pretty short courses. But ive been using my 7 and 8i for chipping and having alot more luck than using Gw or Sw. Not getting rid of a couple of wedges because of but, learning different shots for all 5.
Always enjoy your videos Matt. As a relatively newcomer though I don't see the benefit of using that club rather than an eight iron for my chip and runs.
After watching a number of your wedge videos, I’ve actually dropped the number of wedges I carry and loft gaps. I have PW 46*, GW 51*, and SW 56* now instead of the 46, 50, 54, 58 I used to carry. I use my GW for all of my chipping around the green if the 8 iron bump and run isn’t there. I only turn to my SW when I know the extra loft will help. Helped me simplify things.
Great video Matt. I play exactly the same loft Vokeys as the video. The 54 is my go to, leave the 58 for the sand game! Its helped the scorecard massively
Matt "the wedge" fryer 👌🏻👌🏻 great tips as usual matt. I love the short game aspect of golf, my favourite is a 9iron bump and run 👍🏻👍🏻 you look like the jolly green giant in all that green mate 😂😂
So i got a set of 2004 big bertha irons that ends with a #10(45°) and a 50° wedge. I dont really intend to get different irons; should i just get a 56° wedge and get used to it like its my only wedge (meaning i swing the 45° and 50° like irons) or is 54° better than 58°for "all purpose" wedge?
Hi Matt, I actually find it easier working from my 9 iron all away down to my 60 degrees lob wedge to achieve the different flight and roll patterns you demonstrated with a single club. Would you recommend rather working with a single club or work with 5 different clubs/wedges?
I do what you just mentioned... 8 iron to lob wedge. Always the same exact chip swing, then let the loft control the height and distance. I know the distance for each club with that swing. Seems easier and more consistent than learning multiple swings. I do use my 8 iron, kind of like a putter, for all shots just off the green, for bump & runs. We all learn what works for us.
I would love to have that confidence for a bump and run... "it's like putting"... to me it's a dreaded shot... I'll take a pitch or a regular chip before any bump and run :s
I would imagine the basics all apply. I do all of these with a 60* lob wedge. Just practice, practice, practice. I got comfortable in college just taking a putter and lob wedge to the practice green because it was free :)
I took my 54 out and bent my 50 to a 52 and I have my 58 I find having the two Wedges easier to make my mind up on what shot to hit and it gave me room to add a extra club at the top of my bag and my bag and game is the best it’s ever been
I want this one to feel like my 8 or 9 iron? Use your 8 or 9 iron for it then. You'll still use a 54º more commonly, but forcing your 54 to do something better done by a different club is a mistake. Use the one you want. If you choke down, do it. But don't restrict yourself to manipulated shots.
Are use three wedges only-my pitching wedge, my sand wedge and my lob wedge. Ball position and opening or closing the club face dictates the degree of the club. I don’t need 4 wegdes. Slope and speed of the greens and my type of lie determines which one I use
I'm not sure if this is how I'd chip. I carry the wedges of different lofts so that I don't have to worry about changing the way I hit to change the effective loft of the same wedge. I'd rather grab the right wedge for what I want, and worry less about changing the way I hit it a bunch.
Absolutely and I’m exactly the same. Still - doesn’t detract from this method as an alternative . Quite literally different strokes for different folks.
Love it!

Love this!
Just bought a Callaway Jaws 56 degree wedge .... love it.gonna be using it all the time . Great video Matt
I discovered my Ping sand wedge to be the go to for sand, high lobs, and, closing the face, bump and runs. It's a comfort club I trust.
love it!!
I do that with my ping eye2 be cu sandwedge
Agreed! I sold my Ping Eye 2 Sand Wedge and have regretted it every day since...
Probably the best chipping video I’ve seen! This will help loads around the greens with any luck!!
Wow, thanks!
Absolutly agree, started to practice a single wedge chip, after your 5 tips to break 100 and it works wonders in confidence and it makes it easier to chip others wedges as well - because the confidence is there

Exactly!!!!
49, been playing since I was 10 years old
PW/SW
This is terrific, Matt. Thanks so much for posting it!
Confidence (eliminating self-doubt) is the 🔑 key to achievement.
Continue the great work ...
Fantastic video Matt very well explained . I have been using this technique for nearly 12 months now it really does work and as helped .
Ive found my 50-deg wedge I pretty much ideal for me though on special occasions I might use my 56-deg SW.

Superb video with an easily understood explanation. Nicely done.

Great video on using the design of our wedges to be creative! Going out today with my son, and I'll give it a go.

You are excellent Matt thank you
Great video, I'm forever second guessing what wedge I should use around the green so this looks like it should help.
I do some/much of what you are suggesting with my gap wedge. My problem is with the different lies, such as very tight, to no grass, lies.
My normal club for every shot around the green, unless I need a specialty club is 45* PW. I have a 55* SW and 60* LW which I use either out of bunkers or for flop shots where I need to carry a bunker or water etc.

Like the tips Matt. BTW I like the color scheme of the Miz hat.
Fantastic video Matt! Saved this video for reference. Wedges are my Kryptonite, going to take this video fully on board! Nice work! 👍
Grey video Matt. You've just answered a few questions for me 👍🏼
Glad you enjoyed it!
After watching a number of your wedge videos, I’ve actually dropped the number of wedges I carry and loft gaps. I have PW 46*, GW 51*, and SW 56* now instead of the 46, 50, 54, 58 I used to carry. yeah good way to do it.
Great video Matt. I play exactly the same loft Vokeys as the video. The 54 is my go to, leave the 58 for the sand game! Its helped the scorecard massively
thanks for explaining this really helped
I use from 8 iron to 60° around the green depends on the shot i need some times 4 or 5 iron putting stroke.
great video Matt, what degree is the bounce and would that make a difference.
Question… why de-loft the pitching wedge for the chip and run? Why not just use a club with less loft and skip the arm tweaking?
Excellent work!! Thank you!
Great video Matt, very informative and useful 👍👍
Can you demonstrate how to play a more advanced chip like the one that stops on=n second bounce 👍
Matt "the wedge" fryer 👌🏻👌🏻 great tips as usual matt. I love the short game aspect of golf, my favourite is a 9iron bump and run 👍🏻👍🏻 you look like the jolly green giant in all that green mate 😂😂
I have the 50 degree Callaway Mack Daddy CB wedge as my go to wedge, dont feel like im going to either thin or fat it like i do with my 60 degree.
brilliant, as long as you are confident with it keep at it!
Great video. Very helpful
I have a 54.14F sw surly open that would put too much bounce in play?
So i got a set of 2004 big bertha irons that ends with a #10(45°) and a 50° wedge. I dont really intend to get different irons; should i just get a 56° wedge and get used to it like its my only wedge (meaning i swing the 45° and 50° like irons) or is 54° better than 58°for "all purpose" wedge?
Where do you get those vests? I love this green 1. I have its matching fedora in my closet
Thanks. But what about deep grass?
that was very helpful
Your 54 wedge, what bounce in it ? 10 / 12 ?
Or it's not the bounce type ?
All I can say great, thumbs up 👍🏻👍🏻
Great lesson.
Thanks Matt great info
Great video, but I don’t understand why you wouldn’t just use an 8 Iron on the last shot (bump and run).
Great video
I would love to have that confidence for a bump and run... "it's like putting"... to me it's a dreaded shot... I'll take a pitch or a regular chip before any bump and run :s
Gleaming lesson as usual. Always keeps it simple stupid. Cheers Matt
Get the bounce/grind to match the condition of the course
Matt, will this work with a 48?
When do you use a gap?
What's happened to the coaches corner? Really enjoyed the podcasts
good lesson
How many degrees of bounce does your 54 have?
Would a Cleveland CBX2 56* work for these same shots? I have a P, the 52 and 56 but that’s it.
sure would.
I would imagine the basics all apply. I do all of these with a 60* lob wedge. Just practice, practice, practice. I got comfortable in college just taking a putter and lob wedge to the practice green because it was free :)
60 if I’m short sided, but otherwise the sand iron. Keep it simple, I say. And use the bounce! It is your friend.
Thanks Matt, great video and just what I needed to watch! ⛳️🏌🏼♂️
good stuff
Great vid. Thanks for the quality content!
52 wedge for me. I tell it what I need to do on the course around the greens and approaches. Now only if i can teach it how to wash the dishes.
If you could only afford one wedge at the moment, which loft would you suggest?
if your set has a pw & sw already, then i'd look at a lob wedge.
Are use three wedges only-my pitching wedge, my sand wedge and my lob wedge. Ball position and opening or closing the club face dictates the degree of the club. I don’t need 4 wegdes. Slope and speed of the greens and my type of lie determines which one I use
I use my sand wedge for everything. I just feel super comfortable manipulating it.
Good God how fast are those greens?
Love this because all I ever use is my 56 sand wedge
I'm not sure if this is how I'd chip. I carry the wedges of different lofts so that I don't have to worry about changing the way I hit to change the effective loft of the same wedge. I'd rather grab the right wedge for what I want, and worry less about changing the way I hit it a bunch.
Absolutely and I’m exactly the same. Still - doesn’t detract from this method as an alternative . Quite literally different strokes for different folks.
