I find the best way to load larger diameter plates like 25s is to put smaller diameter plates (5s and 10s) toward the shaft and then the 25s on the outside to make it less unwieldy and more clearance for your fore arms...
THANK YOU for demonstrating the dumbbells resting on your thighs by the weight plates themselves rather than the dumbbell ends!!! I absolutely can't stand when people use that as a con as to why they won't purchase loadable dumbbells (the ends of the sleeves dig into my legs.....COME ON!!! lol) That's probably the single biggest complaint I hear anytime I show mine! Well done buddy!
You mentioning Alan Thrall immediately took me back to your comment-“TRAIN UNSPRAAAAAINED!” Dude I laughed so frigg’n hard. Rofl. Great review. I still think Ironmaster wins having the flat ends, square plates, easily adjustable, and most like regular dumbbells. Come for the knowledge, stay for the outro music. ;-)
I agree, if I had to get a pair of dbs for home use (not fixed), I think the IM are still the best. Glad you liked the comment on Alan's, one of my better dad jokes.
One thing that worked for me when i need more weight and didn’t have more 5kg plates was load first a 5kg then a 10kg. This just improved the angle for my wrists in getting then, instead of putting the 10kg first.
I used to watch you a couple years back when building my home gym. Today this video was recommended, and holy shit man! You have made so many gains since I saw you last. Well done man!
I got the first wave of these last year, riding off of Coop's review. Holding up really nicely. Some dings on the collar from metal on metal, as my 5kg plates have some slop, but I've since purchased some slimmer (and tighter) 10# plates. Reasons I got these over a DB set were as you stated: my infrastructure (weight horns) could support more plates, but I don't have space for a full DB rack. I've tried doing drop sets with them a few time, and as long as you have the plates nearby, transitions are pretty fast, certainly faster than with your standard collar. I love 'em.
Awesome looking db's. Nice way to integrate the collar right into the bar itself. Like how others side, personally I like the idea of having a flat plate on my legs for comfort. And Honestly...I don't see the problem using these with the Rogue Wagon Wheels!
Thanks for comparing the price to the rogue WITH collars. People complain about the price but they are actually very comparable. Also seeing the price as a pair makes it seem more but adding in all the factors really makes these a no brainer if you want adjustable dumbbells. The only downside is having to buy a lot more plates but you can always use more
I have IronMaster dumbbells that I use now. This would take up even less space in my small gym. I only use the IronMasters for anything over 50 pounds as my urethane dumbbells only go up to 50 pounds (small gym). Thoughts? I think I can still get more weight on my IronMasters than these. These could go higher, but would be too bulky due to using 25 pound plates.
Not sure how it would turn out, but attaching plates from smallest to biggest might help with your wrist bumping into the plates when grabbing the dumbbell. Awesome review!
Although, these look 🔥. Have never been a fan of loadable dumbbells. Just a personal preference. Now the allrounder… yes please! I do love the materials used and can’t wait for your options in the allrounder.
Yes, need a review of the Allrounder! I have one, and like this, the workmanship is outstanding. I will say though that the concept of slide lock collar works better in a barbell than dumbbells. You'd want these for convenience, to save time On barbells there's regular collars or these, and these are definitely faster. In the dumbbell world there are faster options: Nuobell, Bowflex, maybe Powerblocks.
Very nice indeed. Just a little too spendy for me, especially when factoring in all the required 5-10lb plates. I'll have to keep slumming with my 90lb Elite USA Powerblocks for now. Side note, I was near Rogue in Columbus OH today but got out of there cheap with only a couple kettlebells and a pair of 10lb deep dish plates. I wasn't as lucky the last time! Almost glad they're 250 miles away! Lol... Great video as always!
I really like the built in collars. It makes me wish my adjustable db's had them. Mine are a pain in the ass to change weight on. I've found that using multiple 25 lb plates to be the best for kicking the weight up. I set the plate on the outside of my thigh, and it pushes the handle out far enough that it doesn't dig into your leg like using10lb plates does.
I have a few hundred pounds of 10s and 5s from some craigslist hunting a few years ago for quick progressive loading. This might be a good use case for those plates when they aren't being used for that! I'm a fan of the sliding mechanism.
Here is the thing , if you do not have multiple small plates that do not have tight interior hole dimensions you will have to buy those as well. So the cost may be a couple hundred more. Just keep that in mind.
1. Which brand loadable plates would you recommend to go with these Gungnir? 2. What’s the best diameter loadable plates to be used with these Gungnir dumbbells?
It would be nice if the grip diameter was larger than 28mm. The only option I know of for a loadable handle with a larger diameter is Kabuki Kroc at 30mm. I'd probably go Kabuki over Rogue, but the build quality wouldn't match Gungnir.
Great idea great execution in the product... Thank you for telling me that you could still throw collars still, I know it defeats the purpose however it's the only real way to go HEAVY and utilize more of the sleeve to load... I'm about to purchase a loadable pair of dumbbells in the near future.... I have power blocks to go to 125 and I'm not going to invest in a pair of gigantic power blocks that go to 175 in weird 7.5 to 15 pound incriminates at $$$ prices...
Brandon: "There are plenty of garage gyms. We need more basements out there." My house is a split level, so the back of my garage is underground. Can we consider that a half-basement? LOL! Great review as always, brother. And the end was worth the wait. LMAO!
@@BasementBrandon I'll see if my wife will let me knock out that back wall and dig a bunker to redo the gym in... She is going to love it!
These are best if you're looking for a loadable dumbbell? Respectfully, I disagree. Got some ironmasters a couple years ago or so on your recommendation and I've been super happy with them. They rest on the legs nicely due to the big screw, and not only am I not afraid to drop them, but they've taken at least one decently nasty spill and have been fine. Also, they're expandable. I guess you could argue price, but this one is $500 with no weights, whereas the ironmasters are $520 with 90lbs of weight and a more standard 10lb handle+screw so no weird math. Plus you can reuse their weights for the loadable kettlebell. Even Coop left em out of his adjustable dumbbell comparison vid. Eh, just some thoughts. Love your content dude.
IM are awesome and my favorite non-fixed dumbbell, however they are not what I consider loadable. Loadable to me is olympic sleeves with regular weights. I would put IM in the spinlock/adjustable category.
@@BasementBrandon ah that makes a lot of sense. I guess I just put them all into the dumbbell category in my head. Never really noticed the difference since they all have essentially the same function.
Great review B. I’ve liked their stuff since being impressed with the barbell in Coop’s vid, but don’t think I will ever be in the market for adjustable DBs (I’m sure that will come back to bite me later). Wagon wheel 1 armed curls…now I’d be impressed! 😂
I like the product until i think about cleaning all the spaces it has. Plus this isn’t a downside, but a feature they should add is a soft materials on both sides so it doesn’t stab the leg would be perfect.
@@BasementBrandon I did upgrade to Nuobells and so far am liking them. I'll probably keep a loadable handles for heavy 1 arm rows but most other movements I found really awkward due to the sleeve length.
It's too bad Gungnir doesn't have TWO options. I think most people would be happy with these however for stronger people or those with very strong backs 110 or so lbs is not enough. I have Rogue USA plates which are probably second thinnest and the 10s are 0.8" so if these were just 2 inches longer with 6"+ of loadable sleeve length people could probably create a 150+ lb dumbbell! For the price they ought to include two rubber or foam dumbbell cushions.
I think there are pros and cons to both. I loved my IM (as evident by my video), the downside would be you have to buy weights through them, vs a loadable like this where you just have to buy the handle.
@@BasementBrandon Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I've come to the conclusion that there's really no bad choice to be made, whether one decide on either Rogue, Gungnir or Eleiko even - these are all high-end olympic dumbbells and the build quality is very similar. The Gungnir is enticing for that proprietary locking mechanism but then again if you bought the Rogue's adjustable those come with OSO collars which could be used on barbells as well. When it comes down to it, i say it's a matter of personal preference in the end.
Typical quality collar that has.a very strong hold (like Rogue OSO, Rogue USA Aluminum, etc) is 1.5” wide. Those DB sleeves consume 2” of the loadable sleeve length with the built in collars. I respect the build quality, but the wasted 1/2” sleeve space make them a gimmick.
@@BasementBrandon That's fair. You highlighted the "what you can fit on the sleeve" element with StrengthCo plates (same plates I use), and I know from personal experience that an extra .50" can play an important factor. Yeah, the locking mechanism is a couple nanoseconds quicker than clipping a Rogue collar on, and that's cool, but as you also covered, the plate "slop" issue is left to dumb luck. As a user you have no control over the slop. Specs (shaft length, overall length, and loadable length) are solid (and comparable to my Eleiko handles), and you've convinced me the build quality is top notch. I see that. But the wasted .50" is a major drawback to me.
I haven’t looked at loadable dumbbells much, but for $500 (plus needing to buy some extra 10-pound weight plates for most people) I can’t see much of a reason to get these over a nice pair of adjustable dumbbells. For $800 you can get a pair of high-quality Nuobells that go from 5-80 pounds very easily and are as comfortable to use as fixed dumbbells.
Anyone else think that that handle is too thin or is it only me? I like thicker handles, like 35mm up to like 45mm. Those look like inch wide handles, you'll never really improve your grip with those...
High respect to you Brandon but totally disagree with you assessment here. While pretty cool with the adjustment collar in convenience it has slop in it. I went with Rogue "with" dumbbell bumpers which allows me to drop and not have any issues with ISO collars. The rogue IMO are the best and look amazing, but these are certainly interesting just wouldn't be my first choice. Agree to disagree on your assement in this video. ;). Stay Strong B! 🤟
@@BasementBrandon True, they are almost $750 Canadian dollars here, I wouldn't mind paying them another $250 if they have flat ends and can still hold Olympic plates, the finish on these are nice!

The rogue IMO are the best and look amazing, but these are certainly interesting just wouldn't be my first choice. Agree to disagree on your assement in this video. ;). Stay Strong B! 🤟
Completely fair!
Sweet
Thanks for taking a look!

Perfect example of a product looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.
Convenience reigns supreme for a lot of people.
500?!?!?!
Yep, but I go into the price and why in context I don't think it's horrendous considering what you're getting.
Thank you for the review. But man.. for $600... There are better options
Yeah I think it just depends. If I'm spending that much on DBs you prob are better off buying something like nuobells, trulap, or snodes.
Those handles are completely useless for most people unless you do lots of heavy dumbbell jerk, clean and row, Ironmaster is far better than these.
Like most things, it depends. Their are pros and cons to both.
@@BasementBrandon True, they are almost $750 Canadian dollars here, I wouldn't mind paying them another $250 if they have flat ends and can still hold Olympic plates, the finish on these are nice!
500 bucks for empty DB? nah thats dumb af. For 500 bucks it better cook me a high protien meal and read me bedtime stories about anabloic states and protien synthisis
again in context, I think they're priced reasonably considering what they're made from.
@@BasementBrandon if you say so.
Why would anyone need these in context? This is for someone who has too much money and nothing better to do with it. Theres better value elsewhere. Thats like buying a spatula made of bloodwood and gold laced to mix your potatoes. Why would you do that?
Tbh I'm here for the sex jokes
Hey now!
