😢 The great maestro Zakir Hussain is no more with us. Rest in Eternal Peace of Music. Born: March 9, 1951 in Mumbai. Date of death: December 15, 2024 in San Francisco.
Gravissima perdita per la musica mondiale. Da circa un decennio esplorando la musica indiana e mediorientale era emerso tra i grandissimi musicisti contemporanei.
It's too big for the mind to understand. Such a towering figure. Loved by so many. His playing so remarkable. The people of his generation who have created so much. The time is here for departure. It's sad, overwhelming, and difficult to accept. I have loved Zakir my whole life. I am now 67. I saw him numerous times with the most amazing players. A mutual friend has studied tabla with him and took me to a class in Berkeley. So special. We went for coffee afterward. Sitting alone with Zakir for a moment, he asked, "What are you getting?" Life is so multi-faceted. A simple question made by anyone. But made by this man I've been taken away by some many times is absurd! Um, Danish? No, he was down to earth. Just an ordinary man who played two little drums for millions of hours for our enjoyment, after his! Amazing. Thank you, Zakir. 🕉 🎉
Slight correction maestro: America's gift to the world is the blues 💙 - which grew into jazz.(!) Miles Davis didn't like the word "Jazz". He said it's the white man's name for this music. "Can you jazz it up?" Songs sung in the fields by slaves became gospel and blues. Went to the city and became electric blues (and soul) and then through improvisation it grew wings 🪽 💙 and became universal music. 🕉 🎉 Now India 🇮🇳 meets America 🇺🇸 "Hi brother. Hi sister. Let's jam." "You got it!" 🎶 🎵
I absolutely loved it, though to just push back a teeeeny tiny bit, I think some of the greatest compositions, whatever the genre, come from those who refuse to accept, “what is supposed to be”. Really, even this amalgamation of “east meets west”, was once considered some sort of blasphemy by “purists” on all sides, and would still today be considered vulgar by such folks. I know what you mean, generally speaking, and I agree, but I had to antagonize just a little. (If you want to even call it that, or push back, it really isn’t either.) However you want to define or describe it, this was absolutely mind-blowing, and imo, a perfect performance! ✌️
Missed the point a little in my opinion!?! It was a fusion and credit goes to the marriage of jazz and indian classical.. I love jazz for what it is and appreciate all that i have heard.. However, keeping an open ear might have helped understand the intent of the concert.. No disrespect just my opinion..
Rest in peace, Maestro Zakir Hussein. Thank you for all the joy and wonder you brought us. You will always be lovingly remembered, and greatly missed. 🙏🏼
I meet Ravi Shankar when i was 10 in the india music skool wich was a honor I meet Zakir Hussain a couple years ago after a concert Meet and greet with friends He was a friend of my dad Really kind person He is a legend One with his tabla and sounds R. I . P 🙏
Whow, Shankar Mahadevan is new for me. That voice is so effortless and warm, he wanders the spectrum so lightfooted and stays completely crystalclear on point, pure joy! The whole ensemble fits wonderfully together.
Also look for Brooklyn Raga Massive (there's a youtube channel) and after that, google the various musician's names in that large ever-shifting ensemble. Also look for the group Natraj, and check out the compilation album _Miles from India_.
GENTLEMEN: THE privilege and HONOUR of being ABLE to HEAR and WITNESS such PERFECTION is BEYOND my IMAGINING. YOU ASTOUND THE heavenly hosts. THEY had to be UTTERLY ENTHRALLED and HOPELESSLY OVERCOME WITH JOY.......RESPLENDENT GLORY.........ALL I CAN DO IS WEEP FOR JOY....PURE EFFULGENT RAPSODY....SO GRATEFUL TO EACH ONE OF YOU. . . . and filled with gratitude for this generous opportunity !!! !!
I don't know what possessed me to type "Jazz India" into the RUclips search, but this is one of the things that came up. Thoroughly impressed. All of the musicians are great. Chris Potter can really play the horn, excellent bass and the tablas sound great, not to speak of the guitar and keys.
First heard Zakir Hussain play tabla in his teens !!! ...along with young Shiv Shankar on Santoor at a private house recital way back in the 60's .!!! .... His father Maestro Alla Raka performed in our small town music conference .... already s big name .... sheer joy to see the legacy carried forward to such heights !!!!
Two days back I had the opportunity to see Ustad Zakir Hussain live. People should watch these musicians play live.. Its an out of the world experience..
A group headlined by Hussain, Holland, plus Potter and other important musicians that presently i don't know but surely are the best in their field, couldnt be better than this...... 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Chris Potter... wow, just wow. Those subtleties he creates in his notes are fantastic. And Zakir Hussain as majestic as ever. Dave Holland I've listened to and loved for years. And everybody else is fabulous. Thank you for this.
I love when it cuts to Zakir Hussein, and he’s just in an absolute trance, so fully and completely absorbed into his playing. Also, when he and Holland are going one on one together, the interplay is just mesmerizing! This whole performance was mesmerizing, and absolutely genius. Thank you! 🙏❤️♾
Chris is something really special... I've been so impressed and amazed at the range of Chris's playing, and how the real elevated musicality and honesty that is always there. He knows music, and really seems to dive all in, and put the music first. A treasure.
If only people everywhere - and politicians in particular - would realize, like this wonderful group of artists, how beautiful life can be if we learn to amalgamate what is beautiful in every individual, instead of focusing on differences and trying to establish superiority, resulting in strife and tension! I enjoyed the program but appreciate the urge to avail of what is best in both traditions! The world needs to learn from this beautiful concept!
This is great stuff. Folks might also enjoy pieces by early Oregon, when Collin Walcott was their sitarist/tablist (from about 1970-1984). Walcott studied with Hussain's father on tabla (and Ravi Shankar on sitar). After Walcott's death in '84, they worked with another great tabla player, Trilok Gurtu. With compositions primarily by Ralph Towner, they're less overtly Indian in their styling, but there's clearly a strong cross-cultural interplay there. Kind of wish they'd been mentioned in that discussion of jazz and Indian music!
Jazz and Indian Classical instrumental have the same DNA !!! Great synthasis of East and West and of ancient tradition and modern. Simply mesmerising !! You HAVE to see a live show to really GET into it .
Did you sleep that and the follows nights ? :) First time in my life I was at a Zakir's concert,, the first set lasted two hours !!!! It was more than thirty years ago, and it was one of the most beautiful performance I have never attended. I'll never forget !!!!
1 hour and 55 minutes of pure bliss. I might have never watched another 'music video' of this length on youtube ever, and not once did I feel like skipping ahead (in fact i went back and listened at many places). Awesome!
I don't know nothing about music. I used to listen some of the legend music in you tube. But after passing away of ustad I am astonished by his skill. This video is marvelous.. RIP .. ustaad. A real ustad..
Thank you for another Zakir who is very musical seems to be more peaceful. Krishna Hi used to take us to London to enjoy Ravi Shankar. Amazing music. Thank you America for jazzing it up.
Sir Louis Banks used to live in our neighborhood in kolkata's park street area. He and late Sir Carlton Kito on guitar were a great jazz pair, playing at the Blue Fox. It would have been wonderful to watch Carlton Sir play with them.

Utterly enthralling. All the blue notes get fully exploited in both traditions! I saw Holland with Don Cherry and an African drummer in a beautiful hall - maybe 600 people - no pa. Simply the HUGEST harmonies I've ever heard this side of a full Wagnarian orchestra. All implied and "in the air", of course, but an absolutely extraordinary acoustic muso!

Never heard of any of these musicians previous to stumbling on this. Yes, wow! All four are fabulous! The way they meld their playing blows me away! I've heard many other attempts at fusing two musical traditions but many times they basically consist of switching from one to the other, no true meld. Here the fusion is perfect. Just perfect!

I saw this concert Live over a year ago. I urge people to go see musicians live. RUclips cannot match that experience.
Lucky !
I heard Ustaz Zakir Hussain 2 weeks back live, it was an amazing experience. But this is definitely a notch above
Agree
Omg I saw circuits trio last feb. they blew the house down. My band canceled rehearsal because half the band bought tickets to that show!
Oh my. So jealous.
Me and my wife were lucky enough to catch this live in Boston. Memorable concert!!
Wow!! And that is why music should be officially declared as the world's official language.
😃😃

lol, then I would love to see the diplomatic talks or diplomatic complex music.
