"When we started to play, I did kind of get chills from the songs ." - John Scofield
Almost exactly 30 years ago, guitarist John Scofield recorded an album he evocatively titled Loud Jazz. Not quite a decade later, he made one called Quiet. Both albums were statements of intent, widely embraced and justly acclaimed. And despite the obvious differences between the two, both were genuine expressions of Scofield's musical personality, which has always been more flexible than those extreme dynamic markings would seem to suggest.
Jazz Night In America caught up with Scofield this past spring, just before he played a concert called "Quiet And Loud Jazz" in Jazz at Lincoln Center's Appel Room. The idea was to both acknowledge and bridge the distance between the two disparate albums, which might have been more difficult were it not for Scofield's sly consistency. "It's not like other famous jazz musicians, where their style changes, you know, decade to decade," says Jim Beard, the veteran keyboardist on hand for the Loud Jazz half of the concert. "He sounds very similar to what he sounded like, you know, 30 years ago. I don't think he sounds that different. And it's just such a strong personal style that that's amazing."

Bill Stewart and Larry Grenadier are such a classy, swinging rhythm section. Gives the band a bit of a Miles/Gil vibe, especially with the unusual instrumentation. And Sco's touch and delivery is so developed and original. Beautiful.
Agree. Really admire Bill Stewart's touch and musicality. So deft. So original. Always finds an unusual color that adds musical value while NEVER losing the swing. Super gifted drummer. For anyone who doesn't know, he's a monster with Larry Goldings and Peter Bernstein.
An absolute master at phrasing and telling a story with creative melody and zero noise.
Dennis has mellowed out over the years, but still has that unmistakable feel. One of my favorites.
Amazing, great band, great reunion, great concert. Greetings from Italy John
I took a guitar lesson from Jon back in '80 (?) in the village in NYC. We ended up just trading solos. He was so much fun., really listened and reacted to your playing. I almost forgot to pay him when the lesson was over. lol I loved his playing on the Billy Cobham solo albums and ESPECIALLY the Cobham/Duke Project live album. That one is one of my all time fav albums hands down.
I have seen gary play a lot over the years, and that is easily the most I have ever seen him "sweat." What a great band. Thanks to John for giving us all such a treat. I wish he would play some of those tunes more often in other settings.
I love good jazz such as any rock or spiritual music. It is a blend of music's best natured sounds. John Schofield is new to me and a great sound. When awarded a prize for finishing The Arizona Challenge about 1985 I was awarded tickets for 2 to a Phoenix Jazz club. I was known to be a music lover. I play harmonica and sing rock, folk and jazz music whenever given an audience.
Scofield's the reason I don't mind getting old and bald.
well, if your face is over average and well groomed, girls don't seem to mind balding men. if you're ugly, you're shit outa luck, girls don't like you regardless if you have hair or not. lol
Ha! That joke made my day, thanks
And still looking cool and fine (?)
But are you saying you okay looking like colonel Sanders ?
He's the reason why I still play and love the Guitar.
love the way he thanks with the guitar at 13:00 ,thanks for sharing!!
Loud jazz , One of my favorite albums,it so nice to hear these guys play it with a few more years Behind them, they’re all little more in the pocket still blows me away that Dennis Chambers doesn’t read music just feeling the groove
Thank you. "Quiet" is one of my Sco Favs. A rare gem.
John is one of my favorite "Git Fiddle" cats!!! Outstanding player and composer on a variety of styles...Awesome Sauce!!!!
30 years john you had a band of doom pick hits time marches on I saw you play it then bought the cds and got to hear it again.every live set i saw back then you tore it up. such joy. thanks for great times long ago. stay safe and keep recording all the best
Awesome prestations, ones of the best !!!!!!! Here a little OUPS !!!!! I love that !! Thanks. 6:18
Hahah was looking for this comment, also 24:34 the horn section ; D
Just discovered these guys...trying to find my jazz listening lane, this is outstanding!
I don't know what's better. The music or that view! Where is that? Jesus.
awesome rhythm section of DC and GG, the brothers are layin' it down.....
Spettacolo ! Grazie John ..
Tanks John......
John is a legend !
My favorite guitarist!
Superb musicianship
Put this in a playlist for later. I got hooked on John's music by way of Marc Johnson's Bass Desires disc. Erskine, Scofield, Bill Frisell and Johnson doing Resolution hit me like the first time I heard Trane do it.
They more than did Trane justice. Man, the comping between John and Bill was years of schooling.
Tremendo sonido! de lo mejor.
Eternal Music like all REAL Music
What a cool reunion and idea.
ago go was my meeting with Sco.. deep groove. rhythm section,,and sco..riding the on top and thru and thru...
Blue Matter marks a separation in Sco’s
discography, as it does Überjam. Two
incredible innovative albums full of funk-rock-jazz-soul.
Thanks for posting. Really enjoyed.
I asked on the Drooble site for recommendations for someone "famous" I'd never heard of Slinky Williams in Germany put me onto this man. Very good call.
Very nice music !!
That kill switch move though!
"a go go" is prolly best album there is to date
Great!!!!
I love the drummer here
Wow!
we love you too.
“Quiet” was not one my favorite Scofield albums, I must admit, but I’m digging these live versions of that material…
Titan and legend of guitar
love that!
wow - like it!!
How I took so long to find this channel?
Many thanks for that.
Beautiful arrangements
‘Colonel John Scofield’ does have a nice ring to it, actually.
to me,that looks like marcus miller on bass, what's with the credits above? who else is actually in the video, right?
great gig!
If you are talking about the "Loud" part, that is Gary Grainger on bass.
they finally "got it" on Trim.
Now I'll always think about sco while eating fried chicken
That's the most musical drumming ever
Is it me or does the visual seem to separate from the sound around 17 minutes? I can hear Sco apparently playing even when he looks to be retuning that bottom E string........
I noticed this too!
I was so confused...like, he's the only guitarist there...
Nah, that's just how good he is. ;P
yeahhh ! Ccombinacion Letal
Arranger and other credits? Please add of possible. Great video. Thank you. :-)
Chris coleman..is mr.billy cobham..junior
Got it. :)
Call me a simpleton but BLUE MATTER was his greatest crossover work - still imo
Which model this black Ibanez?who know?
Ibanez JSM 20th Anniversary
Ok…I am taking my 2001 JSM100 out of its case and ending its sabbatical…..
I missed having new performances from the group of John Scofield, Dennis Chambers, Jim Beard and Gary Granger so bad. It is a blessing seeing them live again!
I was Sco's driver for the Wreckhouse Jazz Festival in St. John's Newfoundland Canada July 11th, 2013. I told him that I loved Loud Jazz and he told me that same story about how his daughter had named Loud Jazz after he and others were drawing a bit of a blank on what to name it! Very cool and gracious man and band, and what a show. Backstage pass from being a volunteer... ;)
yeah, he told me that too! ;)
July 11th..my birthday. LOL
Incredible band and music, yeah but gosh the sound - the mix is incredible. This might be the best live-jazz recording I've ever heard.
I'm with you.
Mahavishnu Orchestra was my all time favorite fusion band......then years later Sco, Dennis, Gary & Jim came along just to remind me that....that kind of spirit is Eternal. Well played fellas.
I was just making the point of Sco & Co. playing with that kind spirit, I saw MO play live twice....first in Indiana and I got to spend the whole day with the band and second was at the ROXY in Hollywood in'73. Of course NOTHING compares to them ........my friend.
Bill Stewart makes it work, swings like crazy just enough salt to bring out the taste! Such an Excellent drummer!
Mr. Scofield presents him as Dennis Chambers .... i know i'm a pedant
Just... wonderful. 'Quiet' is such a great record and this sent me back to it, to bask in it again. 'Hand Jive' remains my favourite Sco album. Food for the soul. 275 people gave this a thumbs-down - I bet they think climate change is a hoax too
What i like ? No stupid egos , all relax men enjoying life and their gift for humanity , why can't the 🌎 work like they in harmony.
What a group of musicians!!!! Sco's music is amazing. Thanks so much for sharing it, how I wish I was there. LOVE IT!!!
Gary Grainger is one of my all time favorite bass players. He had a huge impact on my playing as a kid. And he's still killing it!!! What a beast. And the tunes are great, and the band is one of the tightest groups of people making music together I ever heard. I love Sco!
When I lived in DC and Baltimore, I'd see both Gary and his brother Greg, a fine drummer. They'd play a lot with an excellent Baltimore guitarist, Carl Filipiak (as would Dennis Chambers)
and chambers is back in full effect
One of my favorite bassists also, I first heard him in a group called Pockets, produced by Verdine White.
@@johanponin1360 I remember him playing way more interesting. Seems he just holds the tempo here. Part with Bill Stewart is way more interesting at least from drummer's perspective. I mean Chambers is tight AF. His pocket is one of the finest around (and with Gary Granger it is incredibly powerful combo). But it lack some energy I am used to hear from him. For example in John McLaughlin's The Heart of Things or Niacin... (he uses the middle floortom only as a table for metronome, the third FT is there just for an impression....) Every time I see him for last 10 years or so he seems rather bored... When he was with Sco in Czech republic couple years ago, they had no encore, because he clearly visibly disagreed that...
So unique, Sco's impossible to imitate.
Would love to see John Scofield doing this with his A Go Go album with MMW too. Iconic and essential Jazz/Funk album.
Sweet, Sco playing his 80s stuff again! This literally comes out of nowhere for me, I never thought we would see this happen.
I was at a gig in July with the überjam band, and suddenly they played blue matter at the end. Fantastic! And as much as i love andy hess, in this particular discipline he does not reach the heights of Gary Granger :)
I remember seeing him play at the Blackstone theater in Chicago in 1991. I was so close I could reach out and grab his arm. I had no idea how lucky I was to see him and other greats close up for years. I remember talking to Horace Silver after his set at the same place. Also saw Joe Pass at the same place multiple times and sat a few feet away from him. John was an amazing player back then. I could only imagine seeing him up close now.
What an awesome show... particularly the 'Loud' part of the gig (as those were the tunes that introduced me to John Scofield for the first time). Understandably not quite as crisp as they were back in the day but nevertheless, a fabulous reunion of a superb fusion band, still able to knock those compositions out. And what an incredible venue.
Yep
Yes, not as crisp, but at the end starting around 56.00 on the vamping section Sco is getting into his old form and start spinning (this is a compliment) these cool lines he used to do during the original records and also during his stint in Miles Davis' Band. Gary Grainer is so into it too...fun to see...
Sco is an absolute gem of a composer. Sure he can play but his writing! Zillions of stars.👏👏👏👏👐👐👏👐👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👐👐👐👏👏👐👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Robert Duvall. Amazing guitar player.
FANTASTIC to hear material from Quiet played out after so long! A really underrated record - brilliant writing.
Agree it one of his best
I like Bill Stewart's approach, technique and feel!
Poor Bill Stewart if he's not playing with Sco or Pat he is stuck playing with Pete Bernstein what does that tell you.
Walter T. carpenter - that he's not too bad behind them traps?
The best guitar players want to work with Bill Stewart. I think Mr.Bill Stewart is the perfect kind of drummer!
ulusot the man has flow-something few drummers have
Scofield's style is unmistakable. It's like McCoy Tyner's, in a way. It sounds simple, as though you can easily break it down... but no one can really sound like him!
Gary Grainger does the 1st couple slaps and ...... fuck ya !!! comes out of my mouth .
31:26 First time I got to see John Scofield live was when he played Loud Jazz in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom supporting this 1988 album Loud Jazz...
Hey John, the album "Loud Jazz" was my first jazz record I've ever bought and I've heard it at least a miliion times. Seeing this here is an outstanding endeavour. BTW I've got all your cd's but "Loud Jazz" has a special place in my heart! This album laid my personal transition from Rock and Metal to pure Jazz. Wabash!!!!
most awesome record. my first Scofield record and one that's held up very well over the years.
I don`t think he`s here dude, lol..
This isn`t his channel..
Facepalm..
It might be he comes across right?:-)
Joe Enck,It was his Blue Matter album that made me a fan
Cool story, I remember A Love Supreme being my first transitional record but the first scho album I listened to was Hand Jive.
TOOOOOOOO GOOOOOD! love Quiet, the album. Compositions are beautiful, choice of instrumentation so colorful, players all great, and Sco is such a distinctive artist and guitar player. This whole show is just such a pleasure.. Love, love, love it. I do miss the nylon string sound/color every now and then ( e.g., on Tulle ). Thanks, Sco and band, great show!!!
The orchestra and the soloist. It is like a
Piano Concerto. This could be defined as
a Guitar Concerto, with obligato Drums.
I got Still Warm when it came out on cassette. I think I was 16 or 17. It was my first exposure to that edgy, bop inspired jazz. One of my biggest influences on my playing and writing to this day. This is a killer performance! Everyone is killing!
"Trim" never particularly stood out for me from the blue matter band but this version is just magic! The rest too. Fantastic!
Wow, a reunion of the Blue Matter band! John's most interesting music period IMO.
However much I love this period, I'm still happy that he moved on. He could have stayed in that groove and made lots of money. But he moved on. Quiet, Überjam and the stuff he did with Medeski, Martin and Wood, would never had happened. That would be a damn shame.
Starting at around 28:58: Sco talks about the 30 year lapse since he had the Grainger-Chambers band, and compares it with 30 year time distance between the Benny Goodman era and when he first got into playing Jazz. I find that analogy to be quite fascinating. A lot can change in three decades, a lot can stay the same.
This is an audio and video treasure for jazz and especially Sco fans. Thanks!
Dennis chambers sounds as great as ever. He is the best. The others are truly great also.
That made my day! TY John and band for beautiful flow of music. Ear candy for sure.❤️✌️🙏🏼
Saw John with Dennis Chambers & Gary Grainger/Blue Matter period of time yrs back...it was brilliant..;-))
ajadrew Same here...when they played Trim they were on fire
I played in a band at the time..we had a Scofield transcription book....It was just unreal, a bunch of us kids (we could read etc..;-)) playing those Blue Matter grooves..;-)))
ajadrew I saw that tour too. Chambers was just sick. I'll never forget it.
Nice to see larry grenadier on the bass. I really enjoy his playing.
I wish my bass sound just like his.. But my playing skill won't take me anywhere! ha ha.
Phoebus-Delatte his name is Gary 😉
Phoebus-Delatte sorry maybe you talk about the first set
JS was the next chapter in jazz guitar, the first, except perhaps Pat Martino (and Allan Holdsworth in a different way) to play polytonally in modal situations, putting on guitar some of the Coltrane legacy. That's not often noted. Great, and would like to have heard Protocol from Still Warm.
Pat Metheny?
EgyptianMinor Bill Frisell?
what? look up 'al dimeola'! haha!
Haha he sounds so much like Jeff Bridges. Hilarious.
"Bio-digital quiet and loud jazz, man."
I was just going to say that! haha it's amazing how much he does
Scofield is the best. I find a lot of jazz to be dry and bland, but he couldn't pack more zig-zagging melodies into his songs if he tried.
I've been diggin' Sco since he was with Miles. I love his style...or his "voice", might be more accurate. Because his playing is very vocal - his attack, his use of vibrato, his emphasis...all very voice-like. He has a way of phrasing that's so unique...just cool as hell.
No one sounds better playing "outside" than John does. And, even though Sco is one hep jazz cat, he's not a jazz snob...not John. He will play anywhere, with anyone, as long as the groove is righteous. It's all about the music with Mr. Scofield, and I can dig it, man.
By the way, the first, or "quiet"(it's not), portion just ended...and all I can say is "Wow!" This sounds amazing! Soooo good.
5 stars, grade triple AAA, choice, premium cuts.
Respect and Love from Darjeeling, India 🙏
John Scofield is one of my great idols in Jazz...
Damm Cool Player ...
I did NOT expect to find this on YT. I just listened to it on the radio Sunday night, & I think it's one of your better shows- hands down. BTW, it sounds like John hasn't been accustomed to playing those Blue Matter songs all along, & I consider that a BIG mistake (I think "So You Say" should be his trademark).
Yes! I am a fan of Scofield and my favorite album is Quiet (also Uberjam), and I was surprised how much time he took to play this album again. And never again the nylon guitar.
Chinese Mugwump i got goosebumps when they started to play Wolf and the gang
i love how dennis could have played it fastly and furiously but he stayed down to earth ...
it must be tought to stay almost at meditation´s state of mind .... love it a lot !!!!!!
Haven't listened to the Quiet album in years, but I remembered every one of the songs he played here. They sound much better to me with him on electric as that's the instrument that best allows his musical personality to come through IMO. Great stuff!
Way back in the 80's I saw John many times in Boston while studying at Berklee. One night between sets i wound up taking a piss next to Dennis Chambers in the bathroom. I told him man you were sick! He looked at me and said "what the hell does that mean! ///I explained I meant it was amazing...
