I bought a Shoei RF1400 in the summer of 2022. In October 2022, I was hit hard and fast from behind on I-44 between Springfield and Joplin Missouri. The car hit me so fast and so hard... it came right up through the tailpipe, bending the middle of the frame upwards, throwing me skyward and sideways off the highway. I don't know if I was rendered unconscious or not, it happened so fast. I found myself lying a few feet into the grass off the shoulder. My lower body was broken pretty bad (three months later, and I'm just now transitioning from a wheelchair to a walker), but somehow my head and shoulders were not injured! This helmet took a number of impacts, as it had damage in two or three locations (front and back). Somehow, God blessed me that this helmet protected me... I'm writing this review for Shoei and placing it in a number of popular online locations to show my thanks for the RF-1400!
And thank you God!
Additionally, this helmet was super comfortable and fit my head snug as a bug in a rug!
(P.S. Don't ride your motorcycle on highways at night)
Holy moly, that's terrible! I'm glad to hear you weren't worse off, and I'm sure the Shoei did contribute to that. Hopefully you are on the road to a full recovery. And yes, highways at night always make me feel uneasy.
@@EndlessMoneyPits He didn't have his headlights on, didn't even see him approaching.
Hope you're making a good recovery
does it break in for cheek padding but also around the skull just a little bit ? feels a little tight all over but lot of people told me its normal to have helmet tight there is abreak in period but not sure how long it should take, so far only wore it for 30mn
I'm am so glad to hear you are recovering well. I don't live in the US. But this accident makes me angry. The irresponsibility of that driver is crazy.
I have had this helmet a couple months, yes it is tight when taking it off and on but it's a lot better after breaking it in. One feature I do love about this helmet and the reason I got it, the noise. I've had 3 or 4 helmets and this is the quietest one by far. I can actually hear my speakers very well. Still hear the wind noise a little but I'm impressed with the sound!! And a Shoei will protect your head , one of the best a out doing that. Hope this helps someone to decide which helmet to purchase!!👍
Yes, mine has definitely loosened up over the last few months too. Still a little tight but I think it's the appropriate tightness now. Thanks for the input! Looking forward to getting that new Sena one day. This is my first Shoei so I appreciate the info. Ride safe!
does it break in for cheek padding but also around the skull just a little bit ?
Dude talks way too much and takes WAY too long to get to the point of interest.
Always wear ear plugs. Once you get tinitus you will get why you should have worn them, but by then it will be too late.
Hey man, with this helmet, were you able to hear your speakers clearly even at fast speeds?
I have the same helmet and Sena 1.3 but I used the alternate 3M stick on mount and it works fine. However, the Sena speakers are a little to large for the cut out in the helmet. I removed the plastic screens in the speaker cavity so the speakers fit now.
Love seeing oregon riders on the tube!
Just ordered my RF-1400 last week, should come in on wednesday. Im very excited! I have a transition lens on my current sedici and love it. $200 is a tough price to pay for just a sheild tho :/
Oregon is the place to be! Yeah, $200 on a shield is kinda crazy but close enough to justifiable if you ride in the day and at night often. I think it's the best option available for motorcyclists. Enjoy the new helmet!
I just recently got this helmet. Really liking it so far and feel it's a 5-star helmet as well.
It does seem to be the best of the best based on my limited exposure to the wide variety of helmets out there. Glad you're happy with it too!
does it break in for cheek padding but also around the skull just a little bit ? feels a little tight all over but lot of people told me its normal to have helmet tight there is abreak in period but not sure how long it should take, so far only wore it for 30mn
@@ahmedcs7156it will break in. I have another helmet but first year riding with full face . I noticed it took mine like 10 rides to fully break in. Almost to lose now. It forms to your head after sweat and fitting . Give her time
A Sena or Cardo can still be mounted to this helmet. Revzill and Gears & Gadgets videos on this helmet show you still can. It's just a tight fit and might press the cheek pad closer to your face when using the clamp style mount or you can just use the adhesive mount instead.
Ehh, no thanks. I attempted to install my old Sena and it would have deformed the helmet way beyond what I was comfortable with considering it's price. If it pushes the cheek pad closer to your face, that is definitely not a proper installation and I doubt Sena or Shoei would approve. Adhesive was also a consideration but the curves of the helmet in no way match my Sena, and my Sena has a big slot cut out of the back where the mount slides into it. This would be a really poor method of mounting and would surely fail in little time, plus you lose the capability to remove it for charging. Maybe there's a Sena out there that would stick to the outside of this helmet better but if I'm going to have to buy a new one then I'm going to get the right one. Definitely worth it to get the right unit and install it the right way, in my opinion.
I also had no problem installing the clamp for my packtalk bold. It took maybe a couple extra wiggles to get it in place but it's in and fine.
I have the same helmet and the Cardo Bond fits just fine.
I'll have to give that one a shot. Thanks!
Yep, always that way cheeper helmets good for three years better expensive helmets are good for five.
It is also that getting bounced around over the years can damage the protective part of the helmet, this could actually focus energy at the damaged part cause more damage to your skull than not wearing one at all
Nice bike. l had the first CBR500R ever sold.
Wow, that's pretty cool! They are great bikes for their intended purpose. I've had mine for 5 years now. Working on a review video for it right now. What did you move on to?
I have this helmet for a few months now and I got cauliflower ear from it. Had to get my ear drained 3 times. It’s very tight to put on and take off. I wore it everyday pretty much and didn’t break it much.
I'm so sorry that happened! That is scary to think about and I was concerned about it too. My helmet seems to have loosened up since I got it and is much easier to put on and take off now. Maybe the next size up would be better for you or maybe it's just the wrong shape for your head?
@@EndlessMoneyPits yeah but it is what it is at this point 😅. I haven’t worn it in like a month now because of my ear but luckily enough my wife has the Arai quantum x and it doesn’t hurt my ears but just a lil loose around the forehead area due to it being round oval shape. I was looking into maybe getting the AGV K6 or the Shoei X14 but the Shoei X15 should be coming out soon so I wanna wait on that one.
I know finding the right helmet can be really hard for some people. I've been really lucky to have purchased 3 helmets online over the years and they have all fit well. Hopefully you can find the perfect helmet soon.
I highly recommend getting something like what I have. It’s an nfl licensed brimless cap made of thin polyester/under armor type material which I believe would be used for football helmets as well. It just covers the top of my ears which makes 100% difference when putting the helmet on and off.
When trying the helmet on in store, it was absolutely painful taking it on and off, but they didn’t have the gloss black k6 agv so I just went with the rf-1400 because of the color. luckily had this lying around from my paintball days and it had worked wonders as well as providing an extra layer to keep the protective foam that much cleaner
That sounds like a really good idea! Thanks for sharing that tip.
I got this after using a bell dlx qualifier mips. What a difference. I love my Shoei. I just don't understand the push button on the chin for the visor. Seems pointless as I don't need to push it in order to open the visor
I don't think I'll ever buy another Bell! Not sure about the chin button. Maybe it's just to keep the clipping part from wearing out? I don't know but this helmet is a big step up.
Been using this helmet for the track way before I got my first bike in 21. I wish it had better visibility, like the icon airflight does, one big problem I have is when I'm at a high speed, I feel like the helmet pushes my head back...a LOT. Lower speeds are fine, but the drag at the top end is pretty ridiculous. Other than that, love the helmet
Thanks for the input! I just have a CBR 500r so I haven't been able to do any crazy speeds with this helmet. Good to know it's not the best choice for the track.
@@EndlessMoneyPits daily ride around helmet, it's awesome. Great protection, it's what I used when I took my hellcat to the track. I want to get my hands on a AVG Pista and see if that's any better with drag at higher speeds. For what it is though, the RF-1400 is a solid choice for the street.
Yeah, for the street it's been absolutely great. I've only used a handful of helmets on motorcycles but this one is easily my favorite so far.
does it break in for cheek padding but also around the skull just a little bit ? feels a little tight all over but lot of people told me its normal to have helmet tight there is abreak in period but not sure how long it should take, so far only wore it for 30mn
great video man, just got exactly the same Helment ,how is that transtional visor working for you
Nice! I'm still very happy with my Shoei too. The transitions visor is great, just as good as my old one. I need to get that review video done...
I just finished the Transitions visor review video if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/JNm_E8J_nnE/видео.html
Had no problems installing cardo with clip to the side.
Good to know! I haven't tried Cardo yet. Which model do you have?
@Endless Money Pits Freecom 4x. Imagine it would work with any model. It's a little tight, but once you get it started, it slides right in. I feel no difference with the cheek or any type of bowing, wires tucked nicely at the bottom of the cheek pad.
Yeah, well, that's just like uhhh your opinion man. I bought this helmet and you're right it is a bit tight. So there's a new intercom that fits the new 1400? The shop by me didn't even say there was one they just said the one they have doesn't fit, which was already $350. I was pretty bummed about it. Still considering the Cardo but don't really want to yet 😒
*laughing as I sip my caucasian*
Yeah, actually I finally found a link to the new Sena for the RF-1400 and put it in the description. The more I use this helmet, the more I like it. Definitely a worthy investment.
Did you ever drop a transitions visor review? I don't see it anywhere
Finally got the Transitions review video finished: ruclips.net/video/JNm_E8J_nnE/видео.html
I tried this on at Cycle Gear. Felt like my ears were going to be ripped off. But it felt fine once the helmet was on. I bought it online waiting for it to come in. Hopefully it breaks in. How does it fit now that is broken in even more?
It feels like a normal helmet to me now that it's been broken in. Maybe slightly on the tight side still but I'm very happy with it.
Was that the transition visor in the video..it was pretty dark for a rainy day.
Yes, but the footage was from two different days. It's really sunny in the shots showing a dark visor.
how did u manage to get a hold of a transition visor? I've had the helmet for a couple months and the stock has always been unavailable everywhere..
Yeah, they've been available for a day and then out of stock for a month over and over. I was on a wait-list with RevZilla for a while and bought one as soon as I got notified they were available. I think that's the best way so far.
does it break in for cheek padding but also around the skull just a little bit ? feels a little tight all over but lot of people told me its normal to have helmet tight there is abreak in period but not sure how long it should take, so far only wore it for 30mn
Mine never felt tight around the skull. It sounds like you should try the next size up and see if it fits better.
@@EndlessMoneyPits my bad for the wording, didnt mean the skull , meant the padded side areas cheeks etc
The cheek pads do break in a bit but my helmet remains more snug than my old one ever was.
Nice comprehensive review, thanks 👍 .... top tip though, dont put yer gloves inside your helmet - it degrades the lining of the helmet quicker and makes it mucky too, think about all the crap that can get on your gloves .. dead bugs, fuel, grease, chain lube, dirt n grit etc .. then ya go and wipe it all over the inside of yer lid - not to mention that velcro tearing at the lining too. Seems such a shame considering what you paid for the helmet 😉
That's a good point. Where do you stash your gloves?
@@EndlessMoneyPits I usually just leave them laying between the bikes dash and handlebars if I'm staying around the bike ... if leaving the bike I'll half unzip the front of my jacket and pop the gloves in there or in a jacket pocket if it has one big enough 😉
Okay makes sense. I'll leave them on the dash sometimes too but I get paranoid about someone taking them even if I'm close by. Personal problem lol. Thanks!
@@EndlessMoneyPits No worries, you're welcome. Thank you for the review ... I bought the same helmet today in Basalt Grey colour - awesome lids for sure, so damn comfortable and light 🙂
Does this helmet have the drop down sun visor?
Nope
Still waiting on review of transition lens 😎
I started working on it again yesterday but I need some good weather to finish filming. Should be ready soon ish...
@@EndlessMoneyPits nice!
Thanks for the motivation! Here you go: ruclips.net/video/JNm_E8J_nnE/видео.html
its a hundred bucks more cuz you got the fancy graphics though
That's true. I should have mentioned that.
Lol 😂 “you only have one head…” well maybe that’s not true, hahahaha
BTW, the silicone is there to lube the hinge mechanism
The owner's manual says it's for the bead around the visor. I just double checked.
I have had 2 of these helmets
Fantastic except I HATE the visor tab in the front…it’s was so easy on the left side like the previous gen.
I find it super cumbersome with track gloves on at track days…besides that it is stunning
No need for the X-14 or new X-15
This is enough
Thanks for the input! I have never worn track gloves but I assume they are thicker and stiffer than street gloves, so that makes sense.
I still Choose Shoei over Bell.
I'll never buy another Bell.
U get what u pay for with bell their expensive shit is cutting edge
That little oil isn't for getting extra seal
Sure is.
@@EndlessMoneyPits no it isn't
Then tell Shoei to edit that out of the instruction manual.
This helmet makes 103 db noise ??
Helmets don't make noise.
Haha
This helmet on my africa twin is loud af! Great helmet otherwise. When I stand up it is whisper quiet.
Is that from wind noise or engine noise? If wind noise then maybe you could adjust the windshield?
@EndlessMoneyPits wind noise as far as I can tell. Even with ear plugs in. I am tall so I ride with the windscreen off. I have been 3d printing some different deflectors and placing them on the bike to see what helps. I am wondering if it is some kind of buffetting that isn't at a frequency that shakes the helmet but makes noise. The windscreen makes the buffetting really bad and I can't even read road signs at the highway. Maybe it seems loud but isn't if that makes sense, like the sound is coming through my skull amd not my ears.
That sounds like buffetting to me. Keep playing around with your setup and you'll probably find a solution. Best of luck!
Shoei needs to stop making deals with Sena and hamstringing their helmets. The RF-1400 Sena solution is pathetic. A mess of wires and ridiculous battery placement.
Cardo Edge would be better? Im looking for good intercom for my RF1400 and I saw that Sena SRL-EXT is dedicated (looks smoother than Cardo). What about speakers quality?
I have worn Shoei helmets for 23 yrs. Loved everyone of them …. except this one. Not being able to have the visor stay in place at every click is driving me nuts. When I tried it on at Iron Pony, I did note the visor issue but thought when I get it home, I’ll tighten the screws and all will b fine. No such luck.
Every Shoei I have had from TZ-R’s to RF-1000’s, the visor stayed put at every click. It is unacceptable to pay almost $700 for a helmet where the damn visor doesn’t stay put at every click.
Piss poor engineering Shoei, PISS POOR!!!
