5 years is recommended replacement WITH USE. The helmet should be good if it was kept in its box(no UV, chemical exposure) and in a temperature controlled environment(no heat cycling). I'd wear it for at least 3 years.

I heavily debated wearing it longer, and I will keep it as a backup helmet, but after riding in my Shoei I'm convinced the helmet is just too big for me anyway.

Don´t overhink/overtalk things as most Americans do.
    1. If you go through a corner without problems, you have counter steered and it is nothing that you need to learn. Concentrate on what others are doing around tou insted and be prepered for them doing just about anything stupid.
Just remember that the fatest line through a corner is exactly the same as the safest line (and you have the most margins to adjust your line if needed).
There are more helpful tips/information that you will find out with more experinace or from good instructors.
    2. A new helmet is a new helmet. As long as it has not been stored in direct sunlight it will be fine until the interior falls apart.

Just stumbled across this vid - first one I watched of yours and it was an enjoyable vid. If you've had good success with the company you bought your helmet from, you should contact their customer service and explain what happened with the expiration date. If they're a good company, they'll should replace it without cost to you. BUT since you've ridden with the helmet, perhaps they would only charge you a small fee to return it. Worth a shot as those helmets are still being made and there's no reason to sell you an expired helmet.

    • @itsmissy_xo
      @itsmissy_xo  3 месяца назад

The GT920 is discontinued, they have a new model out, the GT930. I thought about contacting the company, but decided against it since the helmet was still technically brand new in its box. The company specifically sells discontinued models and closeouts, so its not too big of a surprise that it arrived expired... I just know I won't purchase helmets from them again haha :)

@@itsmissy_xo - oh gotch. But here's the thing, I've worked for many years in the restaurant industry and my friends and family are always surprised when I ask to talk to the manager. They (friends and fam) don't want to cause a fuss or be a problem and would rather leave and never come back than give the mgr and opportunity to fix the issue. 99/100 the manager will pay for that bad meal and/or the entire check. Sometimes we get a free desert out of it. So my friends and fam are surprised and willing to come back and give them another shot. NONE of that is possible if they slink away.
When I worked the managers always told us waiters, "I would rather pay for 10 meals than have 1 customer leave unhappy and never come back and never have an opportunity to make it right."
And FYI - I'm different than you. I would NEVER expect to buy a new helmet on clearance prices and have it expired. That's unacceptable and they should fix it.
If you don't make them aware of it and don't give them an opportunity to fix it, they'll never know about it.

I didn't think helmet really expire, they do wear out though. You sweat in it, you flex it over an over shoving your head in it, the outside gets UV damage. In a box on a shelf somewhere, none of that is happening yet. It's dry, in a dark place an not being flexed. So I have no issue buying an new in the box older helmet. I count it's age based on when someone started wearing it.
My current helmet is getting old so needed replaced this year. The pavement jumped up an bit me in the face a few weeks ago so now I don't have a choice. Mind you I wear a small so turnover is fairly fast. You wearing an XS, those set on the shelf a long time. Almost every time you see outgoing models on sale, it's just size XS left. So you will get better deals on helmets than most of us, but age is going to be a problem constantly.
As for what kind of videos to make? Stick to stuff that feels like you. Make the videos you want to make, don't try to make what you think people want. Making RUclips videos takes a lot out of you an it's much easier if you stick to what you like. It also shows in the results. The videos I have made over the years for the sake of making a video, no one watched. The videos I made because I wanted to, most are still getting consistent views years later.

I had the same thought process, as well! That it didn't matter how long it sat on a shelf, it was new until worn. But some have made a point that even over time, since styrofoam is a petroleum-based product, it will degrade regardless of use or storage conditions. Plus my scorpion was too big (it was a small) and too noisy :)
My new Shoei helmet has a MFG date of 02/2024 so I have many years to enjoy this helmet! I will most likely not buy a helmet online again unless it's to replace a helmet I've already worn/tried on. But the Scorpion is still cool!
Thank you for the comment as always, and the advice! Much appreciated.

@@itsmissy_xo It seems like they are trying to use logic attached to the tire industry, but skipping some details. There's a general 7 year age out rule for tires, but that assumes they are in the weather an touching the ground. A spare tire sitting, uninflated in the dark trunk of a car, still looks new long after the tires on the car have dry rotted away in a junk yard. It's the reason spares on the back of jeeps have covers. It's the reason RVers cover their tires when parked, an sometimes jack them off the ground. Fire engines sit inside most of their lives an are commonly sold for scrap still on the tires it was delivered new with.
Now I am not saying tire don't age at all when not outside, just that it's slower. I would bet a helmet is the same. I would think if a helmet that was bought an in use right away for several years, if it's still not to old, the one that sat in a box twice as long isn't either. So the set amount from manufacturing date seems problematic. But I would like to see a test done on it. I am just guessing. The hard part would be finding two unused helmets that were made exactly the same way, 7 years apart. There is a British channel that does motorcycle gear testing, that would be right up their alley.
I do agree, you need a helmet that fits well.

Your style of commentary is refreshing. Just do what you feel is relevant and will keep coming back.
You should lose your doubts because you are better at this than you think.
Also, practice emergency braking often until you are no longer afraid of it. It can make an emergency situation feel like ''no big deal".

I looked at some helmets a few years back, they were not Motorcycle helmets, but Motorsport helmets, for racing cars... I wanted a new one for Rallying, autocross etc, and I noticed the one handed to me to try on was 4 years old already... I didn't get that Helmet, I brought one from another company that keeps running out of stock because the entire Rally community uses them regularly, so have to replenish the supplies quite often. unlike the first company that deals mostly with the Dirt track people (nowhere near as big as the Rally Community) I later found that this was common for helmets from that company to be nearing expiry when purchased, as they buy in excessive bulk to save money. The big problem is, that MotorSport New Zealand checks them, and they will not pass scrutineering once they are five years old, so if you pack up the race car and drag it across the country, pay the entry fee and all that, just to find out you cannot race because the Brand New Helmet is expired!

I had the RF-SR (Cobalt Blue). It's a really good helmet, I never had any issues with it. You will still need ear plugs. But, when I wanted to get a communications system that I didn't have yet, it gave me a justification to upgrade my helmet quite a bit. So I replaced it with the LS2 Advant X Carbon modular Bluetooth. You won't need ear plugs unless you are on the interstate or at least I haven't needed them up to about 60. My justification for an additional $800 helmet was not that great, but if you ever upgrade, it's definitely the one to go with. It is a level of quality of above Shoei, but we are not talking about a big difference. You would have to be very used to Shoei to notice the difference.
On to expiration dates. I have watched just about every piece of information on why helmets expire and the most cogent reason given is that even if the box is never opened and its still sitting on the shelf, the combination of materials used to make up the helmet begin to degrade to the point at which the motorcycle helmet manufacturer no longer wants responsibility. They believe this enough so that helmets that expire on store shelves of reputable motorcycle equipment stores return them to the manufacturer or dispose of them. I rather suspect most keep pretty close to just in time inventory. From my perspective, if the store and/or the manufacturer is willing to eat the cost of that, then some aspect of it must be true. Now once it's on your head, then I 100% believe the eps will degrade. I am surprised they can make it last 5 years. Some combination of body oil, salt, sweat, road substances which could literally be anything, heat, cold, wet dry, being left in the garage in the summer, winter, yeah, they are degrading. In good helmets there are different levels of eps which do different jobs in a crash. If any of those degrade so does your protection.
Normally, I don't mention people's gear unless they specifically request feedback, but since you showed your gloves. They are cute, but you want to look for gloves that have the pinky finger attached to the next finger by something pretty substantial, if you hit the ground in those, your little finger is likely going to need to be wired back into place. Looking for that requirement will probably get you into a much more substantial pair of gloves. You want to look for CE level 2 and you want the level 2 that includes the additional KP (Knuckle Protection) cert and preferably gauntlets.
