    I find it interesting how militaries and factions often times used their BEST STARFIGHTERS PILOTS as undercover agents a lot. You'd think they'd want to keep them as safe as possible until a starfighter battle took place...

      I agree, I find this really odd. When I read this book I was just stuck sitting there thinking, don't you have better spies and infiltration specialist? Why use the Rogues. The Rogues should be in the skies.

      I guess the idea is, they need to be good enough to escape should the situation arise and they are the target of a hot pursuit, that would require an experience star pilot, that is undercover and not relying on anyone except the provider of the starship or fighter with hyperdrives, and if he got the information he needs, and needs to get out, and to ensure the information will return to base no matter what he may come across, you would need an experienced starfighter pilot

    There are so many reasons why I prefer the old EU (I rarely call it Legends), but one of the many reasons was because the authors weren’t afraid of writing about the small battles as well as the large ones. They put details in what some would consider footnotes of history. Hell, there was a short comic about Mara and Luke’s wedding that put the spotlight on a group of Imperial loyalists who wanted to sabotage it, and they nearly succeeded. Things like that could easily be disregarded to a sentence of exposition.
    I miss the old EU. I miss the creativity that flooded the minds of people like Timothy Zahn, Arron Allston, Troy Denning, Drew Karpyshyn, Karen Traviss, and so, SO many more. I tried to get my brother interested in The Old Republic era but he waved it off as “stretching too much” and said he wasn’t interested in the history and lore of a series he likes. I just want to know if he’s part of a small minority or is that a common belief among the current fandom of Star awards?

    One can only imagine the fear of the poor captains defending the planet. "That's strange, I wasn't expecting two SDs to show up toda-." And then, the Mon Calimaris start to jump out alongside them. The realization of the actual ownership of the vessels. And seeing ship after ship appear in front of you. And of course, the sickening feeling, knowing that there is no way the planet would drop its defenses to let you retreat in this situation.
    No matter what faith those captains had in the planetary shields. It would be quite obvious that if nothing else, they themselves could not escape. Even if the rebels failed, those captains had to have realized that they would not hold out long enough against such force to survive until reinforcements came.

      I, Jedi
      Star Fighters of Adumar
      Those novels give a lot of back ground information. Specifically, I, Jedi deals with Luke Skywalker's academy and his first ever students. Star Fighters of Adumar gives a glimpse into the early days of the Rebel Alliance and what they did to keep hope alive.

      To be fair, Wedge was given a very small amount of time to pull off the ridiculous feat of dropping both of Coruscant's planetary shields before the rebel fleet arrived. @@cgi2002 there would have been almost no loss of life,
      Coruscant was subject to fast forming and fast disipating electrical storms so there were lightning rods everywhere, those would have protected civilians and massively reduced civilian casualties, only people who were outside at the time would have been at any risk and very few people had cause to ever go outside, the plan was to overload the power grid and force it to be shut down, which is exactly what happened. generators were not destroyed relays may have been but a significant part of the objective was to limit damage so power could be restored quickly

    • @forgottenfamily

      @@cgi2002 Wedge's tactics would not reasonably be expected to kill more civilians than most other approaches and the civilian impact was taken into account but there is one reality worth noting: there's almost no way to liberate a planet of a trillion without killing millions of civilians. Also worth noting that when Lusankya blasted free, the devastation her departure caused coupled with the impact of the Krytos virus far exceeded civilian deaths from the New Republic invasion and left a lasting memory for the local populace.

    Its pretty wild given how many authors worked on EU material that literally no one could come up with a plot other than "a strike team will disable the shields from the inside." This is the solution to every tactical problem in Star Wars

    • @cgi2002
      @cgi2002 5 лет назад +5

      Yeah but usually they are far cleaner than this. Think about it, creating super storms (which can't be aimed) to destroy several well armoured buildings on a planet with a population of over a trillion people. The civilian casualties would have numbered in the billions, the collateral damage would have devastated most of the planet.
      Really taking the planet would have been far simpler, you don't need a fleet or an invasion. A simple uprising would have cost far less lives, the planets garrison couldn't have numbered more than a few million, I really doubt they could have stopped the civilians simply taking it.

    • @dianabarnett6886
      @dianabarnett6886 5 лет назад +12

      It's classic siege warfare. When you come up against a fortress with impenetrable defense, you can a) simply go around it and strike at more vulnerable targets, b) surround it and starve the occupants out, or c) find a way to sneak someone in and open the doors from inside. Rebel command decided against A; they wanted Coruscant, and they wanted it before some warlord beat them to it, for both its strategic and symbolic importance. They ruled out B, because they'd be vulnerable to those same warlords if they deployed their forces to blockade the planet, and the civilian population, especially the non-human population, would suffer. They needed a decisive victory.

    • @cgi2002
      @cgi2002 5 лет назад +4

      @@dianabarnett6886 that's the thing tho. Realistically a siege of Coruscant would last at most a few weeks. The planet simply can't feed itself. Yes there would have been civilian casualties but the important part for the rebels is who would be to blame. In a siege the empire is to blame for the deaths as they failed to surrender or share supplies. But with this attack, the rebels are directly responsible for billions of civilian casualties, mass destruction of vital infastructure, and they still had to fight a battle afterwards to take the planet. It's actually reasonable to assume given what would have been destroyed infrastructure wise, that as many as half of the planets population would have died in the following weeks, as all spaceport facilities are damaged, all atmospheric controls are damaged, weather control is damaged (and the storms they caused would last for weeks or even months), the vast majority of key engineers, civil servants and business leaders who a new government would need also live in the upper levels,and can therefore be assumed to either be dead, or hostile to the rebels now due to them trying to kill them.
      Basically what the rebels did is turn Courscant into a giant slum, unable to feed itself, with few if any core systems operating. And the rebellion don't have the manpower to restore order, so without a healthy dose of plot armour, in a single act they just lost all their credibility, and turned most of the galaxies key planets against them As if the cost of liberation from the Empire is the complete devastation of your world, it's just not worth it.

    • @terryforsdyke306
      @terryforsdyke306 5 лет назад +7

      the plan was to use the storm to overload the power grid, that worked, it did little damage and caused very minimal loss of life especialy when compaired to the exit of Lusanka or the Krytos virus.
      the full plan was to use the construction droid to force evacuation of the mirrror control facility, then take the facility (which worked, maybe a dozen imperials killed) then use the mirror to evaporate a resivour to cause a storm, and use lightining strikes to take down the power grid (again that worked, as storms on Courscant were extremely fierce lightning rods were everywhere, the only real damage was to power relays) that is where the plan hit a problem, there was a second backup power grid, a centeral relay station had to be killed, the concussion missiles on a headhunter were not up to the job but a TIE used as a guided missile was.

    • @cgi2002
      @cgi2002 5 лет назад

      @@terryforsdyke306 yes that was the "plan" but it's BS. This is an EU novel, thus EU figures need to be used for power generation, shield strength, weapons, etc. By that logic it would take a few hundred thousand lightening strikes to bring down the weakest of shields, and probably a few hundred billion to overload a power grid. Yes, SW EU uses stupidly insane figures that have no basis in reality. So going by that logic, the surface of the planet would have had thousands of lightening strikes per square metre, if not more, that would quite literally cook the atmosphere itself, cause building materials to liquify and kill anything. Now take into account that the shield facility would really have been an armoured fortified structure, capable of withstanding turbolaser hits, you may need to scale the storm up even more.
      In truth the Lusankia's launch would have caused a fraction of the casualties this did. Even less if you think about it, the empire wouldn't have had it in an area with lots of civilians around, most industrial, as to lower the chance of anyone accidentally finding it.

    I loved the X-Wing books so much. I remember I used to read them on road trips to visit family all the time. My Dad liked to buy me books before road trips so I wouldn't go literally fucking insane. I read this book when traveling to visit one of my uncles (Name of Patrick) and his wife and new kid. I was young. Maybe 13. It had just come out not long ago. What I most remember from that trip? My Uncle's vast back yard, his really cool cat who had eyes that were different colors and who liked me, and the book I read on the car ride.

    Damn Korn horn was bad ass he out ran lightning in a giant metal lightning rod essentially then managed to ram a tie interceptor into the shielding stuff which the only way i can think of that happening is if he purposely got one onto his tail aimed for the shield station then another rogue squadron pilot hit the engine area of the tie right before Korn pulled up to avoid the shielding station

    Ever since your Covenant vs Vong video, I've been thinking about hyper-aggressive tactics and how to apply them
    More often than not, forgoing finesse in favor of brute force is portrayed as simple-minded and needlessly wasteful (i.e. those often employed by the _Galactic Empire_ or the _Covenant_) but I wanted to hear your opinion. What circumstances would validate using a sledgehammer over a scalpel, assuming you have the resources for both?
    Also, is this where we should ask our questions, or would you prefer we PM you or post somewhere else?

    Much better than the canon "liberation of Coruscant". In canon, Coruscant doesn't even put up a fight. The unnamed Imperial commander in charge of the garrison basically just secedes the planet to the New Republic, even though it is likely the most well defended planet in the entire galaxy.

  • @streakermaximus
    @streakermaximus 2 года назад

    Couple interesting points about this battle.
    *Wedge's mission was to disable the planetary shields, not destroy them. The New Republic wanted to be able to turn around and use them to defend against any counterattack. After destroying the shield control center, they simply programmed the construction droid they were on the build another one.
    *The captain (and crew for that matter) of the interdictor cruiser tasked with the go/no-go decision for the rest of the fleet had only VERY recently defected from the Empire. She was humble by the amount of trust the New Republic was giving her.

      Some good stargate battles that ecks would do a good job with: the battle of asuras (atlantis), the destruction of anubis's superweapon (which is almost, but not quite, a rip off of the trench run in episode 4, but is more of a tribute, as it does some original stuff as well including clever usage of previously shown technology from earlier episodes) (sg1), the sabotage and ultimate destruction of Apophis's earth bound ships(sg1), the "simultaneous destruction of the milkyway replicators, overthrowing of Baal by the free Jaffa, and neutralization of anubis" (sg1), the first battle for atlantis (atlantis), the attempted invasion of earth by anubis (the president actually has the spine to troll him while also firing his conniving and cowardly vice president) (sg1), the battles against the wraith super hive ship (series finale of Atlantis), and the simultaneous destruction of a wraith hive ship and ori mothership (sg 1). I think two, at most three of these were covered by spacedock, but ecks would do well with these I think, as some of them are similar in structure and theme to the rogue squadron battles, using absolutely creative (translation: crazy and bonkers, though making sense sort of) strategies and tactics. Oh, and I forgot the battle where sg1 deliberately blows up a sun to destroy a resurgent Apophis's armada, that would be a good one too. I probably missed a few that ecks would do a good job with, add to the list I created if you like.

    A battle from BSG that i think would be fun if you broke down is this one: Battlestar Pegasus versus Cylon Ambush fleet (Season 2 Ep. 17 "The Captain´s Hand")
    Its very tricky to get good canon info on how the battle went down in detail, and how much damage was actually inflicted on the cylon hive ships by pegasus, wich is weird taking into consideration what happened during the exodus from New Caprica
