  • On today's Star Wars Battle Breakdown, we look at the Orinda Campaign, which saw the Super Star Destroyers of the Empire face off against the Dreadnoughts of the New Republic.
    Check out the Essential Guide to Warfare (and support the channel): amzn.to/2tQEgwn
    The Battle of Orinda was a major win for the Empire and Admiral Gilad Pellaeon, and saw the near destruction of the Lusankya Super Star Destroyer. Almost immediately after, the Imperial Remnant launched a major campaign against the New Republic, spearheaded by their three dreadnoughts: the Dominion, Reaper and Megador. This campaign would ultimately spell the end of the Galactic Civil War.

      You also just answered the question of why the Empires ships had the colors they had, and why the Lusankya in New Republic service didn't sport the standard New Republic ship colors, a very bright White-Grey(even brighter than the Old Republics White-Grey) with Red highlights instead of retaining the Imperial colors of... a basically unpainted hull. ^^
      And now imagine how much it costed Booster Terrik to paint the *whole* Errant Venture(formlery Virulence in Imperial service), a goddamn Imperial II-class Star Destroyer, in deep red! I think most of the budget for the modifications he had made went into the paint. xD

    Pellaeon I think was the best overall Imperial leader. While Thrawn is still the grand master in terms of tactical and grand strategy, Pellaeon also had a good measure of political savvy on his side. He wasn't overly ambitious, he knew his limits, and knew when to pursue peace over conflict for the sake of the Empire's survival.

    This is what the Sequel Trilogy should have been; a battle of attrition between the New Republic and the Imperial Remnant in the aftermath of the Battle of Endor, not just a re-hash of the Original Trilogy.

      Grand Admiral Thrawn, Ysanne Isard, the resurrected Emperor, any of the Dark Force users from the Jedi Knight games, a brand-new villain that isn't Kylo Ren, hell even retcon Darth Revan or Lord Vitiate into the Galactic Civil War since they're supposed to be immortal. TBH I was hoping the Sequel Trilogy would take some inspiration from SWTOR, with Luke's new Jedi Order facing off against an army of Sith Warriors rallying the remnants of the Empire. Hundreds of Jedi versus hundreds of Sith, it could've been so epic... the new trilogy was such a missed opportunity.

      I think guys like Thrawn and Pellaeon would be "difficult". I would find them wonderful, but they are outside the simple (stupid) black and white Star Wars films often show. It would made the films much more grey, and since I saw the way the FO was shown even as more stupid, curel and despotic than the Empire, I do not believe that the guys in charge would made a good job in bringing such complex characters to life.

    • @Aurik-Kal-Durin
      @Aurik-Kal-Durin 6 лет назад +33

      That's why they would need completely different people in charge in order to make Star Wars right. They could've hired the writers at Obsidian who made *Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords.* Put them in charge of a Star Wars film, it would be the greatest Star Wars movie of all time.

    • @millernumber1
      @millernumber1 6 лет назад +9

      That's a big reason why I hate the retcon of Orinda that Jason Fry created in the Essential Guide to Warfare. Now, we know that the Endurance fleet carrier had to be destroyed because the commander held back the fighters from Black Fleet Crisis, but Fry made it even dumber than it had to be.

    • @chrissonofpear3657
      @chrissonofpear3657 6 лет назад +2

    • @millernumber1
      @millernumber1 6 лет назад +4

      Yeah. I like the IDEA of writing up the story of Orinda, but I really hate how Fry executed it. It was just too neat, tying up a lot of named characters so it feels like something we should care about, but doesn't actually fit with what's already there.

    Hello from Orinda, California. 👋 👋 👋

  • @millernumber1
    @millernumber1 6 лет назад +3

    Good summary. I'm still really angry about the way Jason Fry created this battle in Essential Guide to Warfare for two reasons. First, he took the gutsy, daring Admiral Areta Bell, from X-Wing: Isard's Revenge, and turned her into a showboating, overcautious idiot who gets her whole command killed. Second, this battle takes place just before the wonderful novel X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar, and Fry puts the two major commanding figures of that novel, General Wedge Antilles and Admiral Terik Rogriss, as two of the three major super star destroyer commanders in the battle. So they directly faced off in the battle over Orinda. Problem with that? Wedge would feel the loss of Areta Bell under his command acutely, and he would have done research on Rogriss after losing so badly to Rogriss and Pellaeon's fleet. But in the novel, Wedge feels that his fleet career is going well, and though melancholy because of his general loneliness and his breakup with Qui Xux, he doesn't have the kind of darkness that accompanies the kind of defeat he would have just faced given Fry's retcon. Plus, when he discovers Rogriss is his opposite in the diplomatic mission to Adumar, he has to research Rogriss, and never discovers that they were fighting each other at Orinda. (Furthermore, the kind of victory Rogriss had at Orinda isn't congruent with his downward career path as described in Starfighters of Adumar). All in all, the way Fry creates Orinda is fun, but makes zero sense in the context of Starfighters of Adumar, and since Starfighters of Adumar is one of the best books in the Expanded Universe, the retcon is really stupid.

    • @chrissonofpear3657
      @chrissonofpear3657 6 лет назад

      Good points, although I think Orinda was actually months earlier, if that helps (late 12 aby for Orinda, nearly mid 13 aby for Adumar)

    • @millernumber1
      @millernumber1 6 лет назад

      Doesn't solve the problem of Wedge not knowing that he fought Rogriss just last year.

    • @chrissonofpear3657
      @chrissonofpear3657 6 лет назад

      Yeah, I think Fry just got too busy there. It adds depth, but unintended, I guess. Rogriss was also supposedly an unremarkable commander.

    • @millernumber1
      @millernumber1 6 лет назад

      I mean, he's supposed to basically be Pellaeon without Thrawn - perfectly competent, honorable, believer in the good of the Empire without being warped by direct contact with the more evil commanders/leaders.
      I don't think it really adds depth - the death of Admiral Bell actually feels like it removes depth, because 1) it's not consistent with her character, and 2) it removes her from the pool of characters. (I have the same problem with the Black Fleet Crisis itself, since almost every named character except A'baht dies from the Fifth Fleet, so it has basically no impact on the NR military in books set afterwards.)

    The only question I have is regarding Rogue Squadron. How did they manage to take down six cruisers, being only fighters themselves?

    • @marcbartuschka6372
      @marcbartuschka6372 6 лет назад +3

      Because they are terrible overpowered Marvel-or-DC-comic-like chars, I guess. I mean if you read what Stackpole (and some others) write about them, how they time and again take out huge ships with ease, you get tired really quickly. He even has to "steal" his victories from other books (for example he sized the role the squadron played at Bilbringi up). A reason why I really HATE Rogue Squad. It is also nearly insane how different Star Destroyers are portayed in different books. Timothy Zahn show then as very dangerous ships (both in the Thrawn Trilogy and in the Hand of Trawn books, where a few nearly crush the gathering fleets over the Bothan homeworld). A point of view I would fully support. Other writers make them to not much more than a joke, and the Rogue Squad books are among them.

    • @marcbartuschka6372
      @marcbartuschka6372 6 лет назад +1

      That is true, but I mean the Star Destroyers are desingned to take on similar huge ships with a lot of firepower head on. No way that they could so easily wrecked by a hand full of fighter (the sucess and Endor against Vaders ship came after the whole rebel fleet had concentrated their fire on it). Sure a ISD is not a super star destroyeer, but he easily could hold its line against a Mon Cal cruiser or a number of small ships.

That's millions of Star Systems, they probably have enough personnel to fully man a Death Star at this point.

However I could very well see him support Sloane in the first attempt to build the First Order. He later would surely be pushed aside or even killed in purges of all who were not easy to controll. But I could maybe see him as officer still in the ranks, with a hidden grudge against the stupid leadership of the FO, hopeing to turn the tide aganst this bunch of idiots end return to the New Order as he see it - together with other officers and political staff).
      Or as a member of the Imperial Remnants who were no direct part of the FO until the moment the FO took over the New Republic. Now he had to work together with them for the future of the imperial idea - but surely he would bang his head against a wall if he see what a mess they create. Time for a little takeover, maybe...

    A little rushed, but I like it.
    One piece of trivia I've found noteworthy is the fate of Areta Bell on all this. Though she technically appeared in one Stackpole-penned Rogue Squadron novel set just after the Thrawn campaign, she was retconned into the Battle of Hoth ("see the last transport on the ice? She is waving from the command pod!"), and then Essential Guide to Warfare gave her a flag rank and put her on the Endurance at Orinda (the destruction of which was mentioned in passing at the start of the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy, but we only got the full story much later). Compared to another Alliance veteran turned New Republic Admiral what gets pasted by Star Dreadnoughts, folks have been much less outraged by Admiral Bell, even though they are both technical retcon characters. Maybe because she didn't try to make her ship a very expensive bomb? Or perhaps it's the not fighting naval battles in evening wear.... 😜
