Even the Battle of Hoth saw multiple ATATs destroyed and *all* vital rebellion assets escaping. Every rebel vs Empire plot has to use the good guys beating the odds against the bad guys trope. The fact they send fighters towards capital ships is a joke, its the same as real naval combat. Ships are equipped with active protection systems that destroy incoming missiles and low flying aircraft. Anti air is very dangerous and in star wars ships would be armed with shields.
Doesnt matter if its irl or sci fi space, sending small fighters towards massive ships armed with thousands of small anti ship guns is literally suicide, warhammer 40k handles that well. From 1941 to 1942, the Soviet Russian forces began the implementation of a previously theoretical strategy known as "anti-tank dogs". The concept involved tricking dogs strapped with explosives to run under tanks and detonate after a period of time, usually by convincing the animals to believe that food could be found under a tank. Although some success was found on the battlefield, the practicality was questionable at best, as the dogs did not differentiate between allied and enemy forces, making this short period the only time when the Soviet forces were desperate enough to try such a risky maneuver. However, regardless of statistics, the long tradition of suicide animal bombers would continue, assuming many forms, some successful (camels and horses) and others much less so (bats and cats).

See, if I could rewrite Star Wars canon, the entire Galactic Civil War would've taken a full three generations (67 - 80 years) to be resolved. The first assault on the Death Star took over *25* years. The plan took over ten years to fully actualize due to the Rebellion having to grow. After the death of the second Death Star, which took a further five years, the Empire was still a very massive threat.
The Rebellion had to grow for thirty plus years to be even anywhere near a match for the Empire. This meant near constant recruiting, pillaging, spying, assassinations, consistent war, incredible struggling for the Rebellion. The battles of Yavin and Endor would be close to incomprehensibly huge, thousands of ships alone. It would make The Battle of Coruscant look like a medium sized engagement.
Kuat came after Endor, the Rebellion still trying to build itself larger than the Empire, yet having a realistic chance now. Kuat and Coruscant were the next toughest objectives to accomplish. These following battles took over a decade of struggle, due to the sometimes still overwhelming Empire. It was only after three generations that this would be fully resolved, and the Galaxy could be ruled competently by the New Republic.

You know, I think this battle was partly in one of the PC games. The final level of Empire At War's expansion. During that level, Tyber Zann and his underlings show up intending to steal the empire's latest project: a super Star Destroyer so big it dwarfed Vader's super Star Destroyer and was equipped with a laser that effectively in-game was a miniature Death Star laser.
When the level's intro begins Tyber makes a comment about it being difficult to sneak through the empire's rendezvousing fleet that had fled from the 2n'd Death Star battle for repairs. Just as they begin to debate on what method would be best, they pick up on incoming ships. A rebel fleet led by Han Solo's Falcon shows up and Han asks what you're doing there. Tyber lies in response, saying that they'd heard about the victory over Endor and came to join the rebellion in quelling the Imperial forces. After a brief continued exchange, the level begins, and if you really feel like it you can sit back and let the rebels and Imperials beat the tar out of each other for about an hour before your final objective is in any danger.

Yeah, the Eclipse was a beast to use. The shipyard planets (Kuat, Mandalore in FoC, and at least two others) were always my prime targets in EaW campaigns, being the only places to build capital ships. Better to hold on to them and not use them than let enemy forces build up their firepower.

    Honestly, it makes perfect sense:
When it comes to winning a war, your number one priority should be to ensure constant, nonstop production of war assets, and to do that, your production facilities MUST remain intact and operational. If they can be disrupted or captured/destroyed, you're going to find yourself quickly on the losing end of any conflict.
Kuat Drive Yards is the single largest starship production facility in the entire galaxy. It is single-handedly responsible for everything from mass capital ship production and starfighter/bomber construction to extensive, advanced R&D on weapons, shielding, hull plating, and more. Whoever controls Kuat controls a vital piece of the galaxy's total war asset production abilities, thus making it a more valuable target than even Coruscant itself.
Losing a capital may damage morale, but losing your production facilities will mean you lose everything, including the war itself.

I feel like the whole operation cinder thing was just made to explain how the empire was defeated so easily. It seems that the first order was just made up and then somebody had to come up with an idea of how they came to be. For everyone complaining about how weak the empire was, it’s supposed to be. Palpatine wanted it to strike fear, not necessarily be effective. The more terror it sows, the more powerful Palpatine grew. If the empire just crushed the rebellion, then there would be less conflict, less chaos and less fear. The more the rebellion fought, the stronger he would become. We’ve seen how powerful he was during the prequels and sequels. He created and controlled the clone wars, without either side truly knowing it. There’s no reason to believe he wouldn’t do the same during the civil war. This time, not by balancing technology and forces, but by using bad tactics and incompetent leaders

    • @AGH331

He wanted to create fear precisely to subdue rebellion. In several movies he goes on about how he wants even the concept of rebellion to die - the Tarkin doctrine resulted in the Death Star precisely to keep everyone in line. So no, Palpatine didn't want more conflict, he wanted to sow fear to smother all conflict and resistance.

Who wrote this absolute nonsense? The rebel alliance didn't have the resources, or ships to attack one of the most fortified Imperial areas in the Galaxy. There could have been hundreds if not thousands of Imperial Star Destroyers (and tens of thousands of fighters) protecting Kuat drive yards. Yet I'm somehow supposed to believe that the Rebels not only stood a chance, but the Imperials also surrendered when they were winning (for some unknown reason!)? I don't buy it.

@ToMlgForYou And Ringworld existed way before either, so looks like this is a pointless discussion.

This would also be a excellent Squadrons Map-Fleet Battles and Dogfights, and also good to play if this is inserted into the story. Maybe without the Ground vehicles for the Multiplayer modes.
The New Republic could lure the Shattered Empire away from the Project Starhawk by staging a massive battle at Kuat.
    If so then,
    1) The Empire would loose many fighter craft and Star Destroyers
    2) The New Republic would also lure them away from the Starhawk, then it would be used at Jakku to properly end the Empire.

It makes far more sense for the empire to have lost all of their fleets and walkers fighting in this battle (somewhere that's actually strategic), rather than some random desert planet in the middle of nowhere.
