    Be interesting to compare that ‘54 with a ‘56 P90 equipped custom to see how much the bridge influences the sound. There are also the mini Humbucker Deluxe and the three Humbucker Custom Les Pauls.

    Always loved that 54 Bob, what a guitar, you do need a 55 custom now just so I can drool over it, great show as usual, I think 52s have a slighrly thinner maple cap which probably changes the tone a bit imo.

    Until a few days ago, I was a believer in the PAF voodoo myth. I just got a '57 Les Paul Custom from the Gibson Custom Shop. Don't get me wrong. Their replicated PAFs sound is awesome indeed. However, after doing my own back-to-back shootout with a recent 3 humbucker pickup Fender Tele Deluxe, I was surprised to discover that the Fender pickups sound overwhelmingly better than the PAFs. I mean the PAFs were totally blown out of the water. And it wasn't just me. All five other people in the room had the same opinion. The PAFs were put to shame further when compared to the TV Jones T-Armond pickups on my Gretsch Custom Shop '57 Penguin. So, I now believe that regardless of how sweet the sound of a PAF humbucker, it is by no means the Holy Grail.

    • @Fox-86
      @Fox-86 2 года назад +3

      There are much better options out there, than Gibson's stock pickups.
      It depends on what you are looking for.

    • @TheGuitarShow
      @TheGuitarShow  2 года назад +4

      Agree with you both - depends on the sound you are looking for. If you want the london blues tone then PAFs are obviously the first choice - but for all other styles of music they are not the best choice.

    • @Fox-86
      @Fox-86 2 года назад +3

      @@TheGuitarShow that's certainly a common application and they work well for that. But a good PAF is a surprisingly versatile pickup. Especially when paired to a semi hollow body like in the Gibson ES series.
      Saying they are not good for anything but Blues, in my humble opinion and experience, means coming from a very limited point of view.

      1963 ES 330 TDC … 1968.. i traded my new Schwinn bicycle that I just got for my 16th birthday for the 330. My mom was a waitress and paid $49.95 for that bicycle. I wanted a car, but I got a bicycle instead.I traded the bike to a classmate who had the 330 given to him for his birthday a couple years earlier. He lost interest in the guitar after the 1st lesson..
      my mom was so mad at me, she wanted me to give the guitar back and get the bicycle back…
      i’m glad I didn’t. I still have that 1963 Gibson ES 330 TDC, in the original case here in 2022. Those nickel P 90s are tarnished. This was my main guitar in high school, and when I played in the smoky bars during the 70s and 80s.
      I have many guitars now ..there is something special about the neck on that 330. Magic happens when I pick that guitar up. I have never had it set up ever.. I have a 335, I like the 330 much better. It’s much easier to play, and I love the P 90s..
      I recently traded my 2009 gibson les paul standard gold top HH for a Gibson Les Paul classic Ebony with P 90s. I’m glad I did that swap too..

    Awesome! Ok so that middle position with bridge rolled back tone at 10:35, THAT is what I hear in my head when I think of classic Gibson. Does it work the same way on the P90 Les Paul to achieve a similar honky/nasally tone?

  • @dionysusthemadgod
    @dionysusthemadgod 2 года назад +2

    Is it just me, or do the PAFs actually sound more bright than the P90s? Those P90s are really smooth, whereas the PAFs in that ‘58 have a tinny sort of sharpness I find undesirable, although the tone is not entirely off-putting. You’d just think the single-coil would be brighter and sharper.

    • @johnbeloe
      @johnbeloe 2 года назад +1

      Yep my experience also. I have original PAFs and p90s. PAFs are brighter and slightly less compressed. The p90s clean up better though, to a crystal clear single coil tone

    Simple '58 'Burst is perfect for Classic Rock and Blues etc., but the '54 is a straight-up Blues Machine, which by the way I'm pretty sure Muddy Waters used...either that or it was a '56, but either way it was a P90 Lester he played for a long time before he ever picked up a Fender ANYTHING...

  • @kennygardner5041
    @kennygardner5041 2 года назад

    Sometimes PAF’s can be bright almost Tele bright. I find P 90’s to be deeper sounding, narrower maybe but clear and love clean or dirty tones without being nasally. PAF type pickups can be nasally unless fully dirty but again the amp matters. Allen Collins from Skynyrd replaced the bridge humbucker, narrow and bright, in his Firebirds with a P 90. At times his tone was fatter than Rossington’s Les Paul with PAF’s. Both pickups are great! Depends on what YOU need as a player! Myth means nothing. All about sound that works for you.
