    It's a real treat to see a collector who is not only willing to share his collection, but who actually plays his guitars and who is enthusiastic about the differences in sound and playability of these vintage instruments. Have u ever photographed your burst inside the pickup cavities and inside the switch and controls cavities? Have u found the carve on the top is more violin like than later LP's? This would make a great video showing the differences from what is being produced now.

    This was a nice surprise today ! Interesting how you said the double cut is not at its best at home practice volume ; a Gibson "student" model ... The original owner probably only ever played it through a tiny valve amp , I imagine. Lovely guitars and always a pleasure to see & hear you play them . Thanks Bob 👍

      Joe Cooper thanks, Joe, and yes, which is making them a bit harder to access so freely at the moment. Your point about collectors is interesting - I know a number and most of them play, some pretty well, but I know at least as many who can hardly play. Always intrigues me, I guess they just like the look (and capital appreciation)!

    • @shaunw9270
      @shaunw9270 4 года назад

      I always think the same , Joe. I remember reading accounts in the 90's of Japanese businessmen paying astonishingly inflated prices for 50's Sunburst Les Paul models from American dealers and then just dumping them in a bank vault with the Samurai antiques & Van Gogh paintings. It's their money , but it just seems a shame non players hoard them .

      David McFly With pleasure. Andre Duchossoir’s Gibson Electrics and Gibson Electrics - The Classic Years; Walter Carter & George Gruhn’s Electric Guitars are a great place to start; and The Beauty Of The Burst if you want to dive deep into ‘bursts. (There’s one for Strats too). Also the cheaper UK book The Gibson Les Paul book by Paul Day and Tony Bacon. All of these and many more are on the shelves behind me in the video. Enjoy and thanks for watching!

    I have a ‘55 Junior myself, but mine was pretty rough when I got it. But your right, it’s one of my best playing and sounding guitars.
    A coworker used to keep it in his locker at work and played it on his lunch breaks. He was asking about $600 in the want ads, he sold it to me for considerably less. This was back in the late ‘90’s.

    Fantastic collection of Vintage LP's... I have to say LPs are my main weakness. Do you have any of the Florentine hollow-body LP's? I have a custom shop one from around 20 years ago.... great for jazz...I kinda like an old 71 LP Recording I have too.... A lot of guys don't care for them but I like them in certain situations. Very quiet, clean guitar. Love all your guitars and knowledge of the instruments.

  • @npet6842
    @npet6842 4 года назад

    Your P90 '54 is louder than my pickup's output , which have ( maybe obviously ......... ) less hum possibly due to less windings . This model has good mechanical connection of bridge to body that gives it a wonderful acoustic-ish sound transmission . I've attached a compensating wraptail , which is noticeable in the upper register .

    Hello Bob. On Ramon's video on Clapton and The Beano album (and other vids on the same subject as well) there was some debate as to whether Clapton actually did (as according to legend) use a Dallas Rangemaster Treble Boost between his Les Paul and his Marshall. I suggested that if YOU ever work another Crossroads Guitar Festival, that you should simply ask Clappers. Good idea? (I too was introduced in 1952, by Edward and Jacquelyn.)

  • @plasma3211

    Really like your guitars Bob. I owed a LP Gold Top of an unknown vintage. The guy I got it from wanted to swap guitars while jamming. I had a 76 Gibson SG Deluxe which once it went into his hands he wanted to straight up trade! I liked his Les Paul and it immediately felt right in my hands, heart and ears! That Les Paul had natural sustain and like your Jr's and special it loved the high gain. It would sometimes sustain for over a minute. I asked my buddy where he got this guitar. He said he got it from a guy running down an alley with it for $60 bucks and a half ounce of weed! He was a young guy at the time and paranoid about owning a hot guitar so he gouged out the serial numbers in the back of the headstock and put in his own with wood filler. He admits it look terrible and ruined the collectability of the instrument but not the sound. He believes it was a 66 to 69? Years later while in the depths of my drug addiction I pawned the guitar at a place called Lawndale Pawn in Lawndale,Ca. I use to go into the store to pay my $20 pawn ticket which was due each Wednesday. When I walked in the store the last time the owners son was sitting there playing my guitar. He turned to look back at the clock which was 11:45am and said, "boy the day you don't come back here this baby is mine"! I didn't make it back and lost my beloved Gold Top! He got an almost mystical guitar that I miss to this day! If your struggle with drugs and you own guitars like this. Find someone you can trust and leave them there with instructions to not give it back until your clean and in recovery!

But I have to make one comment: According to A.R.Duchossior´s book "Gibson Electrics Vol.1 this particular model 13:30 changed to the SG name already in 1960, so technically it´s not a Les Paul, and thus of course no Les Paul Special decal on the headstock

    Your playing certainly renders justice to the quality of those instruments.. Really nice jazzy chords and phasings btw... I'd be curious to see you play blindfolded let's say a very good quality alternative, but a lot less expensive and after that, one of those vintage ones to hear the difference.. I am sure we would end up thinking: hmm as far as tone is concerned, perhaps the player is the most important part of the gear chain.. Mind you it's common sense, but I realize as time goes by, that it's not that common with many folks after all..LOL..

    If I didn’t know any better (and I don’t) I think I know where Bob got his Burst from. I’m about 50/50 that Tom Keifer used to own that axe. I could be wrong but I know Tom‘s more of a player than is publicly thought and I also know he’s had a few bursts over the years. Bob made reference to it coming from the singer of a hair band and Tom’s been in Nashville for a while now. Those seem like Bob‘s circles. I’ll offer my detective service if any of you have a cheating spouse or something lol.

    Is it wrong that when i see someone that owns a old 1958-60 LP standard i hate them with a venomous hatred? 😁JK
    On a serious note it would be great to have one of these owners with me to pick out a CS Murphy lab. I will never own a
    original so the ML is my only option at this point.Gibson should offer a service where actual owners of the old standards are available for hire to hand pick a CS Murphy for the customer. I mean who better to rate one of the ML Les 'Paul's against a old one than a owner of a original? Having never played one i would have no clue which one is closer to a old original.

      He's a player with a excellent vinyl collection! Norm hoarded as many guitars as he could to sell to bankers, lawyers, and rock stars. He basically took thousands of guitars out of circulation to sell for obscene prices in his retirement years. Truth be told though. It's not the guitar that makes the player. And all those great rock stars were playing relatively new instruments. So if vintage is your thing and you have serious bank behind you go right ahead. The rest of us will play off the shelf gems that can be had for a fraction of the vintage market. The LP is short scale which makes it exceedingly comfortable in the hand.
