02:14 perfect demonstration of why the original 50s wiring scheme is so great. Added clarity and no mudiness
You wouldn't happen to have a link to a schematics of that by any chance?
It depends on what guitar you have, its easy enough to find on google
Academy Of Country Music Guitarist Of The Year 2014 and 2018. When Rob speaks, E.F. Hutton and all of Nashville Tennessee listens. Rob knows more than Google about music. Killer tone and amazing chops. He knows all the right notes and when to play them. Super amazing musician. Thanks for the video.
You are very kind...Thanks for checking this out!
Yes all true! Amazing guy as well. Very humble.
Just another guy here trying to understand who all of the greats are - I just got schooled on another great artist. I have always thought P90's were unique, now I know for sure. Thanks
I've been playing and hearing guitars for more than 40 years, and that's the first time I've watched someone NAIL a classic Strat tone with a Les Paul. I did not think it was possible. Wow, it's great to get schooled on different ways of doing things. Amazing. Thanks for this visit, Brett and Rob.
Thanks for checking it out!
Yea, I was surprised at how strat-like it sounded. That was pretty amazing.
@@BrettPapa Rob got an instant follow out of that, haha. (I already follow you, Brett!)
Thanks! Yeah, I was surprised at that tone discovery when i started messing around with these guitars. What REALLY made a difference in that direction was when i switched from 11's to 10's on these guitars. Opened things up quite a bit.
Just learned something about my LP Special!
I put Lollars humbuckers size p90s in a Les paul studio that sounded too dark for me with humbuckers. I changed the electronics to a 50s wiring with 500k pots in volumes and tones (not very ortodox with single coil pickups type). The result astonished me, what a great sounding guitar it turned it into!!! The 500k pots made it way more bright, even verging on tele territory, but what made the diference was the 50s wiring. I got what Mr. McNelley talks about and shows, backing down the tones and volume knobs you get that kinda sounds not related to a les Paul. My guitar now behaves as the Les Paul Special shown in the video. It´s a wonderful guitar, very pleasant to play.
Yeah for sure! Good way to go. I have a Strat wired like that. Its awesome!!
Glad it worked out for you.... It's amazing what that little tweak does for those guitars!
I did 50s wiring in my Junior and it does that too. Almost sounds like and acoustic guitar with the volume and tone on 5.
The G chord is a beautiful thing, might be a guitars weak point but when its intonated correctly, that G chord gives you shivers.
For sure!
Those first tones with the special are next level!
Yep agreed! Wicked tone!
2 years later. Still the best tone I have ever heard.
Rob knows how to do it!
Ha ha, this came up in my feed two years later too, I forgot I saw it and I was again stunned at the tones. Just incredible.
Thanks for showing me how to USE the volume and tone controls for my P90 Les Paul. Awesome!!
Glad we could help!
The best explanation and demo of P90’s I have seen. Thank you Gents....
Great to hear! Thanks for checking us out!
Awesome! I'm a big fan of the P-90. I just installed a set in an LP Deluxe copy that had mini humbuckers in it and I have no regrets. Very touch sensitive and dynamic. Charlie Starr is another big user of the P-90s!
I love me some Charlie! P90's are never a bad idea!
Are the mini humbuckers in the LP Deluxe the same size as the Epi Riviera? I'm thinking of buying a Riviera, and setting it up with P90s. The older 90s Asian Rivieras have triple P90s but I like the new colours and just wanted two pickups
@@themaelstromnotebook I’m not really sure. Mini humbuckers and P90s are traditionally the same size though so possibly.
P90s and Mini Humbuckers are same size. Many players prefer the mini humbucker vs p90. But it's a tough choice both are great.. I'm getting a p90 for my Doublecut Melody Maker this video convinced me to get one.

I really like the all mahogany one. It seems smoother and cleaner. They both rock. Love the P-90’s !
Dang what a tone!
Friggin filthy wtf.
Yes sir!
...so we only need one guitar + amp after all?
Fantastic tone from all the guitars, yes.
But let's not forget that a 1960s Deluxe Reverb is an Epic Amplifier.
Brett Papa Great P90 tone and great playing by Rob.
It would be interesting to hear these same guitars through a different amplifier(s).
A vintage Deluxe Reverb is an incredible amp and very much contributed to the great tone of these instruments.
Love your content Brett, Thank You.
That is just the most insane tone I can remember hearing from a Special. Love it!!!
Yeah that one is so good!
I bought my first P-90 guitar last October, a lefty Epi LP Special with two P-90's. Reminds me of my tele, I liked the tone so much that I just bought a Gibson LP Junior, an early 70th birthday present to myself. The single P-90 on the Junior sounds so good I can hardly put it down. Played thru a Marshall DSL1CR or a Swart Atomic Jr., my two favorite practice amps.
Yep they are fantastic guitars!
Thanks Brett! One of the best demos of a great pickup! Great guitars in the hands of great players. Can’t be beat.
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Alan Wilson, of Canned Heat, used a 50s Gold Top with P90s and watching him playing at Woodstock made me wish I have one.
Guys!!! Just amazing tones, guitars and most importantly playing to highlight these timeless pieces of history! Amazing how well built and great sounding Gibson’s were and imho still are! Just wish these were more affordable. Thanks Brett! You’re a fantastic interviewer and masterfully bring out the best in your guests.
Wow thanks man! Glad you like the vids! I wish I could afford more Gibson's too lol!
I happen to think (and have owned and played) recent Gibson custom shop reissues are really great. They just take a while to settle in...
What a beautiful sound, send me back to the late 50's, 60's and early 70's when all beguin ! Now I realize that I need a guitar with P- 90's !
Yes you do! One of the best sounds ever!
Harley Benton do a Les Paul Gold Top copy with P90s that has gotten great reviews ..for less than 200$ landed from Europe ..reviewed by a few good players and no complaints .so worth checking out before you go splashing out big bucks on a Gibbo ..
Something tells me this guy could get these tones with any guitar.
Well he does make anything sound good but after hearing probably thousands of guitars in my lifetime every single one of Rob's guitars sound amazing. Hell if it tells ya anything I bought one of them lol!
At the beginning Rob is describing 50s wiring: the tone control is connected to the middle lug of the volume knob. The tone doesn't get dark when you roll back the volume but lowering the tone also lowers the volume a bit. Nothing to do with the pickups, you can do this to any guitar.
To be honest, nobody needs more tone from a guitar and an amp. Absolutely great how the "knobs" making the tone fantastic!
Yep. Tough to be a great guitar straight into a great amp!
Thank you for all of the time you spent playing without effects. Most guys demo their pedalboards and not the coolest stuff on the planet.
Sure thing!
This might be one of the best demos of the P90 sound capabilities, this is phenomenal
Thanks for checking it out!
the very best P90 comprehensive demonstration, brilliant talent solid dude
Thanks Daniel! Glad you liked it!
Man, I loved this video. Brought back memories of the first time playing a Gibson with .p90's back in the 60'S. I got the shakes on stage!
Good times!
What a sumptuous, amazing tone and marvellous guitars!
Thanx from Italy
I love a video that inspires me to pickup my guitar and this one really did it! Thanks you 2
Awesome! Glad you liked it!
Here is what I love about these vids. . . . .. Brett is a great guitarist but he is a fan too. Open-minded fun.
Thanks James! Rob is such a great hang, wealth of knowledge, and wicked player that its easy to be a fan!
Love Rob's tone and playing style!
Me too lol!
He's very, very good player and nice guy !
It seems likely that those tonal changes in the beginning are likely way more due to the complete change in playing technique than rolling back the vol/tone. He was playing lighter, different picking angle, and picking way up toward the neck.
I have an old 1963 harmony master that I threw a single coil gold foil surface mount pickup on. I can get very straty tones out if it just by using a similar technique.
All that being said, rolling the tone and volume back can emphasize that tone a bit. Sweet playing, and sweet guitar.
Thanks to Brett I've turned my guitar playing into some thing good .thank for your Chanel
Awesome to hear! Glad the vids have helped!
Incredible tone. Nailed that ambient tone on my vintage casino on the bridge PUP, using a slight clean boost into a treble boost, to cut the mids, and get more highs and clarity out of the 60s P90s, then into a 70s memory man. Thanks. Great video!
Thanks for checking it out Paul!
Those must be the very best P90 tones I have ever heard on YT! Just fantastic. However, it bums me a little noone mentioned the Joe Glaser's Music City Bridge Stud Finder bridges on both Les Pauls. They are a huge part of the overall sound of those guitars. Give the guy some credit!
Yep Rob has himself some amazing guitars! He has mentioned them before in another video.
I have a lp jr. From 2020 and I must admit that it's amazing.
The versatility of the tonal options is unbelievable for one pickup.
Gibson really did an excellent job of making these new guitars.
Yep agreed! I was at the Gibson Garage the other day playing some and they were fantastic!!
Jesus the goldtop's bridge sounds fantastic!
Totally!
@@BrettPapa Do ya think the ones with maple top will kinda "always" sound brighter than the Specials?
'Cause I've seen the oposite.
Glad to know that an accomplished musician like Brett and a ham-handed amateur like myself make the exact same ‘stank face when good P90s start roaring! Whew, tone of the Gods right there…
Lol!
My first guitar was an epiphone 1956 Les Paul reissue with p90s and an old low watt tube amp. Probably the best way to start. I learned how to get alot of tones from those 2 combos and it served me well going forward. Guitar is a dynamic, very articulate instrument
have to try this on my 55 lespaul special reissue. same guitar but in Tabacco Burst as yours mines a 1974
I have that same guitar. Gnarly sweet.
Stunningly beautiful sounds. No wonder Charlie Starr loves his vintage Juniors with P-90s. Thank you for this!
Oh yeah they are amazing! Doesn’t hurt to be able to play like Charlie too haha!
You can see photos of Keith Richards using that same early 50s Les Paul back stage. Those things are super Teles!
This was a great video. I love P90s and each of those guitars sounds amazing. Truly stunning.
Glad you liked it Joe! Thanks for tuning in!
Fantastic sounding guitars and I really like demos with clean to crunch sound so you hear the guitar. Those are all sweet sounding guitars.
Yeah mine too. He has so many great guitars and amps its kinda unfair lol!
Great Demo!
I love P90s. There is something about the mahogany slab with P90s that I love about the Special, even more than the more traditional maple-capped Les Pauls with the same P90s. The other thing that both of these guitars have is a wrap-around tailpiece. In my opinion, despite less than perfect intonation, the wraparound bridge adds something I really love. You can get a compensated replacement wraparound from several companies that pretty much fixes the intonation. It looks to me that both the Les Pauls here are sporting the Mojoaxe version. Great stuff, great tone!
Thanks for checking it out. Yeah after this video I vowed to get myself another Special at some point.
Awesome tone and video, well explained and complete demonstration of every tone you can get just "moving the knobs".
Thanks Lucho! Hopefully we can get Rob to do some more soon!
I was just going to write how the Gold Top sounds just like Keith Richards when the comment was made about it being like the Stones sound. Beautiful sounding guitars.
loving the tone's my next purchase has to be P90 loaded, Jeff Beck R.I.P. used to love working on Volkswagen Beatle cars think he had a little side business doing so.
Got to have some P90's!
Latecomer here, but the discussion about 50’s wiring and the controls is really interesting, because I have a 1955 Goldtop (with ABR) that does amazing stuff with the interactions of the volume and tone controls that I cannot get with my R6 or 2000’s LP Special or any of my modern Les Pauls, despite them being 50’s wired. My ‘55 does the same crazy stuff that you describe and demonstrate.
Thanks for tuning in!
One of the best tones I have ever heard!
For sure! Rob gets some wicked tones!
Fantastic Playing • Great VDO • Thank You
Thanks for checking it out!
I keep coming back to this video, uncovering layer after layer...
Rob is awesome! Hopefully we can get him back in here soon!
Man that demo around 14.07 absolutely special thanks
Sure thing!
I suggest to every to listen to the young died bluesman sean Costello and his 54 gold top for great p90 tone
Finally the video I have been looking for. Everyone showcases the rock aspect of a P90. I wanted to understand the blues aspect. I love the strat sound, but hate playing one.
They are great for everything!
I loved your comment on the 50’s wiring. A lot of people forget that key aspect to the tone of vintage Gibsons with P90s. Another interesting fact is that most were wired with audio taper 500k pots for both volume and tone. I have heard that there is the odd 500k volume with a 250k tone, but that setup was primarily found in the ES guitars. I guess when the Les Paul wiring person was sick, the ES person just wired them up the way they knew how. Who knows really, all those guitars were one-offs due to lenient quality control.
Muddy used the ‘54 gold top mostly in the studio as it was too expensive to take on the road and couldn’t be easily fixed if needed like a Fender. God I love old wood and P 90s...thanks guys!
You are welcome Bill!
Incredible playing, fascinating stories, worth many "thank yous".
Thanks for tuning in!
No wonder every modeler is trying to figure out that formula for that sound! Fantastic sounds
Yep! For sure!
Tone is always the best when plugged straight into the amp. No pedals to worry about makes it even better.
Yep it is a fantastic way to do it!
I use less is more. I like as few things in the way of my guitars signal as possible. I find that players sound better when they have learned to play with less. Too many guitar players rush into effects and dont figure out how to sound good without all that jazz.
I recently got a Travis Bean and it has 50s wiring with a treble bleed and there are SOOO many tones hidden in these 4 tone pots and 3 way switch. Its crazy. Ya dont need pedal to get so many of these tones and in reality most of these tones we chase was recorded with a small tube amp (Champ etc) and straight guitar. These effects were not apart of the original recording, they may seem like they make it easier to get that tone, but in reality it was all in the guitar and the players hands and the tubes reaction to their dynamics. Also some of these pedals color your tone and change the whole dynamics that are going on and actually are kinda a muffled way of getting that sound "easier" ? If that sounds right.
The bridge PU on the gold top looks a lot closer to the bridge , that would obviously make a difference too .
I could listen to him with those guitars all day long.
Me too!
Yes to the teles episode! Yes to the amps episodes! Also, an episode on how Rob crafts solos for other artists, like Jon Pardi...
Both of those coming soon!
I love the P90s. I now have 3 different P90 guitars. Rhett Shull videos got me to try them out.
They are tough to beat! Like a tele on steroids.
Great P90 demo, did you install Mojoaxe compensated tailpieces on these Les Paul... thanks for the demo!
Awesome video! I love P-90's even more now!
Yep they are the best! Such a cool sound.
I have a double cut , I love it !
Awesome Gerald!
I was so happy with my R4 LP, but recently i got a 1955 LP jr (signle cut) that i finally found THE LP tone from it!
Haha me too! Love my Junior!
a few seconds in and I am already blown away. Sweet sweet tone!
Yep, Rob does that to people lol!
Awesome demonstration of P90 tones 🔥
Thanks for checking it out!
Oh my Days, these are some of the sweetest sounding tones I've ever heard from that amazing 53 Les Paul, Just insane. Anyone know what amp Rob was playing through?
@0:35 I think the single cut has its neck pickup closer to the neck than the double cut, so that would give the single cut more low end.
Hmmm, never real thought about that but it could be true for sure.
I’m listening on my phone without earbuds, and the tone is astounding!
I have a 1990 single cutaway Les Paul special with P 90s in cherry red.
Thanks! Lucky you! I need to get one of those soon!
A lot of players envy you ! Congratulations !!
Love the tones you’re getting. Just started to appreciate P90’s and that classic low-mid gain rock tone. Great for cleans as well. Luckily modern variants are wax potted so that you can turn up the gain without getting insane amount of noice and squeel.
P-90’s are a must!
Great stuff Brett...
Thanks! Glad you liked it!
"Well, that one I traded money for..."😆
Don't think I've heard a guitarist yet who doesn't love P90's.
P90's are so good! So worth it to have at least one guitar with them!
Pulled the humbuckers out of my SG and put p90s in it. I'll never play humbuckers again.
Looking at the Customshop version of each and can't decide..love them both but can only afford one..lol...help ( between the special and gold top) Rob is hilarious and killer tone too...watched this Many times.
Both are fantastic. Can't go wrong with either of them!
I have a Gibson '56 R6 and play it through my 40 watt Dirty Shirley with some plate reverb in the fx loop - its the most amazing sound ever.
Sounds like a pretty awesome rig!
@@BrettPapa Your love of the Dirty Shirley sold me on that amp. It's so good!
My first les paul copy had p90’s but I was so young and musically naive I made my mom sell it to get a les paul with humbuckers to match slash’s. I was like 8 at the time wish I still had that beauty. On the other hand I have 75’ el degas LP copy that sounds insane
Sounds like a win win either way!
I had a friend who owned a 52 trapeze gold top. Personally I feel the 52, 53’s LP pre tuneamatic are the collectables.
Always enjoy your video’s! Thanks Brett!
Sure thing Martin! Thanks for watching!
@@BrettPapa Thanks for responding Brett! There something about the way you do your video’s and the whole vibe! Very cool Brett always enjoy them! I pick up little things all the time! Lol! Thanks for responding! Sometimes I don’t know if people know just how much of an effect they have on viewers! Peace!
My heart wants to love the goldtop, but in all my experiences comparing the two, I always go back to the Special. Theres something so pure and direct about that slab of mahogany that the maple caps lose a bit.
Yeah I feel ya. And that particular one is just unreal!!!
Try checking out Tommy Bolin with ZEPHYR (On a similar P-90 equiped Gold Top!
Will do!
Strat sound... I’ve been told that the Another Brick in the Wall solo was played on a P90 LP.
Hmmmm, never heard that. I suppose it is possible. I know he uses a Gibsons a lot these days.
@@BrettPapa It seems to be confirmed here: www.gilmourish.com/?page_id=901
It is indeed a p90 Goldtop straight into the desk with some compression
@@bobilly Confirmed.
heard that one too but it's a great tone.
Vintage p90's are very dynamic ! My fave !
Me too!
Curious as to the readings on the Special I have a 59 Dog ear in my 66 SG Jr and it's 10+ K They were all different I suppose but the mid/late 60s don't seem to be as hot as the mid/late 50s I'm a certified P90 guy w 46 -11s since getting that Gibby Good stuff guy's 👍
No idea on the readings on any of my guitars, but in general, the 50's P90's seem to have more air and have a clearness to them. The 60's P90's seem to push more mids to my ears... but it's hard to pin point because there are exceptions to any statement that can be made on this subject...
@@rmcnelley yes always exceptions when you have that human element in manufacturing Thanks man great sounding guitars and amp
Gibson P90 and Gibson PAF Humbuckers are what I think are the best.
I can play a Strat or hear one being played and like that sound but always quickly abandon it for the PAF Gibson and/or P90.
It's a great sound for sure!
12.35 - that is an absolutely gorgeous sound, holy hell......... i think i need P90's in my life
Yes you do!
@@BrettPapa just need to decide which ones to buy and which guitar they'll be going into lol.
Love Blackberry Smoke. Charlie from BBS loves P90s
Charley gets wicked tone!!!
It is definitely the 50s wiring - when you turn down the tone, with the volume anywhere less than 10, the mids thin out a bit instead of the tone getting darker, so you get more clarity. It works with P90s or PAFs wonderfully. 🤟
I have 54 Gold Top reissue, playing with the tones, sometimes all off on one pickup all on the other with volumes 7 and 5 range, through my 64 DR, man that honks, these are holy grail of tones. I have some Airline single coils that match up pretty close, not as powerful but sound amazing through DR
I believe you. But then I don't know.much. I have heard that capacitors can make a difference in guitar pots too
@@imannonymous7707 the 54 has Bumblebee capacitors. Means they're colored in a bee stripe 🐝, those are vos correct period electronics. What matters is how the tones roll off each pickup, where sweet spots are, gives you both Freddie King and Hubert Sumlin when dialed in just right. IMO certain guitars and amps match up better.
@@imannonymous7707 a capacitor is a capacitor is a capacitor. The only difference that matters is that you use the right one for the right situation. But in general a .022uf film cap from any brand will sound absolutely identical. If anyone says they tested it and can hear a difference. They are lying, OR capacitors. Resistors etc have tolerances. Depending on price you can have anywhere from a +/- 1% to +/- 20% with them. Same for potentiometers, resistors etc. So if you buy 100 .022uf caps and 100 500k pots. Many will be very different values. So of course they will sound difference. My les paul had shitty 250k pots from factory. Ranging from 217k to 300k. I bought a bunch of 5% tolerance pots and found 4 that were between 498-502. Then measured dozens of caps till I found one of the right value. And anyone who wants to argue this really doesn't know much. An electrical signal does not know nor care which cap its going through. A capacitor in your tone control is literally just sending part if your signal to ground. And thr value controls what part of the signal. I live near one of the greatest amp builders in America. I actually finally had him build me an amp this year. Incredible amp. Best I've ever heard in my life and I've played them all. I talked to him when I was younger and believed all the snake oil. And also I studied EE now and build amps and pedals. And this man will state. Non of it matters. Quality matters. Thats it. Just buy good parts and make sure its the value you need
@@patrickrosington1174 I’m betting that lower capacitor values are part of the secret sauce here, but completely agree that the brand of cap is irrelevant. My experience with amp builds is that all polypropylene or all polyester caps in the entire amp does make a difference ... sometimes. But that 1 tone cap in the guitar? Just no.
...and the checking on that Gold Top is WILD!!! (...and it sounds gorgeous.)
Yep! Read deal right there!
Wow, great sounds. I always loved the SG sound, and the Special seems to have a similar sound.
Yeah Rob's guitars all sound amazing!!
50's P90's were very different than 60's P90's. Around '63-ish 50's P90's changed magnet wire from the brown purplish plain enamel wire, to the cheap very red poly wire. The steel parts also changed to harder carbon alloys, and stronger alnico magnets, so it was quite a big change. Those same changes happened to PAF's, which transitioned to poly wire Patent pickups. So old PAF's and old P90's were far superior in tones. Guitar players don't know this stuff. There was some harness changes, like pot values varied depending on what model. Like the single P90 LP Specials used .045uf tone caps, and 250K tone pot with 500K volume pot, to soften the brightness.
I'm pretty sure the vintage wiring is the big difference, I wired a studio with vintage wiring and what a difference. The tone happens after the volume knob where as modern wiring it happens before. Along with simple coil P90s, just a sweet combo
as a metalhead that only plays on bridge position, the P90 neck is the sound that Id love to have
It is a good one!
Great job on the intonation!
Rob has got it down!
These were some of the best tones ever 😱 What would be an affordable P90 guitar that’s comparable to the tone/vibe of that 58’ Les Paul Special?
Thanks for checking out the vid! You know the Yamaha Revstar for the money is a fantastic P90 Gibson style guitar for the money. Also a lot of the new Gibson stuff even the lower priced models sound great!
@@BrettPapa ok cool deal, thanks man!
Those p90s are special, love their tones
Me too!
Awesome tones fellas. Very impressive.
Thanks for checking it out!
Just found you again Brett. Lost you for a while, bloody YT. Great stuff and thanks.🇬🇧🇬🇧
Haha! Glad you are back! Thanks for watching!
Makes me wanna leave work early and run home to grab my P90 Les Paul Custom.
You should!!
Sometimes less is more ... perfect in my opinion.
For sure!
My first really good guitar was a 53 Goldtop. I then found that my path needed a Strat for more expression. I did have the sound of the P90's in my ear. When I built my Strat I contacted Seymour Duncan and asked what he had that would capture the same P90 sound to put in my Strat. Now it's been over 40 years and lots of finger pointing at my build, until they play and hear it. I got a fatter single coil sound, without the humbucker mud.
That's awesome!
So what kind of PUP did he recommend???
@@FinstaDaMinsta He didn't recommend anything. He sent me 3 pairs of P90's and said keep what works and send back what you don't use. I picked the P90 Hot. I'm building a new guitar based on the Ernie Ball Axis and I'll be putting a Seymour Duncan P90 Hot in that as well.
