    The fact that people are so cool as to post this stuff on youtube makes me forever happy.
    I did the whole 'cleaning off the pins' thing when my dryer wouldn't properly heat, only for my dryer not to start. I wept, only to search up more things and eventually come to this video. Doing this trick with a spare screw I had has my dryer running once again, and I could not be more grateful.

    Thank you very much. Your investigative skills are awesome. I 'm a retired engineer and have a dryer with the same issue; and I have utilized many electromechanical timers in many applications. So, I intuitively believed that a cog switch or an alignment issue was a logical cause for this malfunction. Your solution appears to be the simplest solution. I also believe that having both the timer motor and the drive motor can operate on one switch [Motor], without exceeding the switch rating. Thank you again & I hope everyone finds your solution.

    Thanks a million Bob. Fixed my Whirlpool dryer with a #10 3/8 screw, After trying 3 ebay used ones your fix worked. The hardest part was getting that tiny snap ring off the shaft. I'll let my ebay seller know not to sell these things again. I ate up all his profit in shipping costs. 😁

      Hello Todd,
      That is awesome!
      It is crazy thinking how many people over the years, might have had this same problem, and threw out a decent dryer, just because of a timer issue.
      I purchased several timers and evidently, they all had this issue. I kept/fixed 3 of them (one installed; have 2 others fixed/ready as back-ups). Yes, that dang snap ring is a pain.
      Anyway, glad the fix worked for you!

    Wow thank you for taking the time and explaining in detail what the actual problem is. I been troubleshooting an old Whirlpool dryer with a no heat issue and no timer advancement. All the heating components tests electrically good for continuity and element tests good too. I took off the timer and sanded the contact points but still no go. I did notice a lot of wobble on the cam wheels, so I will try your fix as a last resort. It's good informative videos by conscientious helpful people like you that make RUclips great.

    Thank you Bob!! I just fixed my oldy but goody 1980's Kenmore 110.87570110 dryer that wouldn't shut off. Timer part 693905A. All the contacts looked great but there was a LOT of slop in the 3 plastic discs as you mentioned. It took longer to get the snap ring off than the whole process of taking it apart, installing the screw and putting it back together. I hope the bottom gear is supposed to spin freely, as mine does. Thanks again! :D

      Very glad to help. These dryers are great and will last a lifetime with simple maintenance parts (other than this timer issue) = No need to spend hundreds or $1K+ on a new dryer.

    Thank you--working on this now! Question: Should that screw be cutting into the (unthreaded) plastic when you screw it in? If not, what is holding it in place? Also, either way, won't that metal screw eventually carve enough slop into the plastic disks that the problem returns?
    Update: My screw was snug-ish but not tapping the plastic, so I put a nut on it in the gap between the third and final disk, which locked everything together nicely. And now...success! The dryer turns itself off as it should. Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. This was probably the most satisfying repair I've made in YEARS.

      Awesome! Glad the fix worked for you. Great job!
      The screw has enough projected surface area (against the plastic disks), that it will not likely ever fail again.

    On my Amana the contacts were OK. I could check that without taking apart the timer. My problem was on "auto" regular/delicate cycle, the timer would not advance past heating phase.... IE ... stuck on heat and run forever. Normally you would think that the thermostat was stuck and not switching heat off, but my problem was only happening during this one cycle. Note that the timer only advances in "auto" mode when the "cycling" thermostat is in the heat-off mode. My problem wound up being the plastic cam disks that were not syncing together because of the wear where the plastic disks fit onto the metal shaft .... IE .... too much free spin of the disks on the shaft. I needed about a 4 mm diameter screw to lock my disks together. But, I had to use my Dremel with cutoff wheel to remove the head on the screw and cut a slot into the end of the screw for screwdriver. Also, for my timer the mounting plate comes off without having to remove a shaft retaining clip because it's a 2-part shaft. One part of shaft comes off with mounting plate. This means that you better note that shaft position and place notes on mounting plate and plastic disks for aligning the 2 shafts when putting back together. Otherwise, the selector knob that mounts to the user end of the shaft will not be aligned with markings on dryer's front panel.

      I forgot to mention that the reason I needed to cut off the head of the screw was because the screw head blocked the "push to start" feature (extra set of contacts) on the timer shaft. This should not be needed if you have a separate start switch/button that separate from the timer.

    • @kirkharris8729

      Yes it's been working great ever since I locked the two circular plates together with a screw.... no problems.

    • @kirkharris8729
      @kirkharris8729 10 месяцев назад

      The extra play those round discs had against the shaft going through the middle of them kept them from syncing together. Now with the screw locking them together everything works like it should. It might be just a little out of sync with a front knob but not enough to worry about.

    Had the same problem. Timer would not stop running but dryer would shut off. Took the timer apart and installed the screw as in the video, same problem. Replaced the timer, same problem! I eventually found the problem. Was a coil in the heater shorting to ground causing a stray loop that kept the timer running!

    • @robertb.6526
      @robertb.6526 9 месяцев назад

      Just curious, how did you find that the coil?

    • @rickbass7610

      @@robertb.6526 Initially, I spent hours trying to figure out how the timer kept getting voltage. The dryer still worked so it was no big deal, we just pulled the breakers after every use. Then last week it started giving poor heat so i pulled the back off the dryer and found the thermal cutout (the one at the top of the heater box) was open. So i replaced it and when I flipped the breakers back on I noticed the heater was on! So I took the heater off and that's when I discovered one of the coils shorting to the case.

      Rick, thank you for your reply and congratulations on finding the issue with your dryer. I’m personally going give up on mine. It’s almost 44 years old 😁. I think that’s a good lifespan for a close dryer. Thanks again. I will be shopping for a new one,it’s time.

      @@robertb.6526 44 years old. Wow! Parts can be tricky to find for an oldie like that. What's the problem with it anyways?

      The knob On the timer where I turn it to the time for the clothes to dry it just gets stuck whatever time I set it for and it does not rotate. I tried Put in a screw to tighten the plates, but it didn’t help. It’s probably the It’s just worn out, the gears maybe, I don’t hear them clicking when I turn the knob like I did when it was working. They don’t make that part anymore, Sometimes I see some that are selling at eBay. They probably rebuilt, and this is 50-50 chance it won’t work. I’m just done with it.

    Nice video and informative but unfortunately it didn’t work for me. I spent over 3 hours installing a screw . I tapped the plastic wheels and filed the threads of the screw so it wouldn’t interfere with anything. Didn’t work😢

    find a timer with the same terminal configuration . remove the cam and install your cam ..... now you have a timer that will work .
